This. Is. Progress.

2016 is the year many around the world are tipping for British Wrestling to break out and receive the worldwide recognition it deserves. At the forefront of this is London based promotion PROGRESS Wrestling. In just 3 months they will head to the iconic Brixton Academy for Chapter 36: We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Room. This will be a huge milestone for not only PROGRESS but the whole of British Wrestling, between this show and ICW’s Fear and Loathing 9 the entire wrestling world is about to be shown the true firepower of the Brits.

PROGRESS are currently in the middle of the reign of the Villain, Marty Scurll who has recently defended the belt in Italy against Zack Gibson and over the pond at WrestleCon during Wrestlemania 32 weekend in Dallas against Will Ospreay. Marty has many challengers biting at his heels and wanting to dethrone the mad king including recent winner of the Third Natural Progression Series, Pastor William Eaver, who can cash in a title shot at any show he wants.

The next Chapter of the story will be the second annual Super Strong Style 16 Tournament (SSS16) held at the southern base, The Electric Ballroom in Camden. A mixture of homegrown and foreign imports will compete over two days for a shot at the gold. Some of the top names that are all very capable of going all the way this year include Chris Hero, Zack Sabre Jr and Tommy End.

Recently announced by Co-Owner Jim Smallman was the PROGRESS Atlas Championship Tournament for wrestlers over 205lbs Two blocks of four wrestlers are currently battling it out in 15 minute time limit matches with the winners of each group facing each other to crown the inaugural ATLAS Champion at Chapter 36.

SSS16 1st Round - Doug Williams vs Zack Sabre Jr

ZSJ is the man. Doug has served BritWres well but he's just too old to keep up now.

SSS16 1st Round - Chris Hero vs Rampage Brown

At least one import goes through and Hero is a far better worker than Matt Cross or Sami Callihan.

SSS16 1st Round - Mark Andrews vs Matt Cross

See above plus Mandrews is a Progress lifer.

SSS16 1st Round - Mark Haskins vs TK Cooper

TK's good, Haaaaaaaaaaskins is better.

BRUISERWEIGHTS REPRESENT. Massive Pete Dunne fan here.

Chapter 30: SSS16 Day 1

Electric Ballroom, Camden

Commentary Team

In a decent match to start the show Trent Seven up the victory over Big Daddy Walter in 6:21. Walter certainly impressed here in the little detour off the road on his quest for ATLAS gold but will want to certainly forget about the result moving forward. Trent Seven won over the fans in his PROGRESS singles debut, big things are ahead for him.

Kenny Williams made his PROGRESS debut here in a losing effort against The Origin’s Zack Gibson. The Scot dominated the first few minutes coming hot out of the gates but eventually Gibson took advantage by keeping Kenny to the ground perfectly executing his game plan before locking in the Shankly Gates forcing Williams to tap out at 7:03.

In a match some of the fans missed as they were at the bar getting drinks between matches Mark Haskins forced TK Cooper to tap out to a crossface chicken wing in 11 seconds. As the bell rung TK Cooper was distracted by Dahlia Black as they were kissing and Haskins ran behind him locking in the chicken wing.

Post-match TK Cooper got down on his hands and knees to referee Chris Roberts yelling that he wasn’t ready and asking for the match to be restarted. Mark Haskins went straight back to the entrance before stopping at the announcers table and just standing in front of Marty Scurll without saying a word. Scurll barely acknowledged that Haskins was 2 feet away from him insisting that his fellow commentators continue talking about TK Cooper in the ring and how he was screwed.

In a slightly underwhelming match Pete Dunne defeated Sami Callihan in 13:51. Big things were expected from this match with it being the final match of the first half of the show however something just didn’t click between them making for awful chemistry. Both men will want to forget this match.

In a good, high flying spotfest Mark Andrews pinned Matt Cross (aka Son of Havoc) in 9:41. It took just 30 seconds for the first dive to the outside in this one and fans left wanting more from these two hoping for a longer match in the future. Post-match Matt Cross was greated with ‘Please come back’ chants to which he responded saying he will be tomorrow.

This match was a true hoss fight, the match from bell to bell will go down officially as 14:01 however it was over 2 minutes after the bell rung before the two men made contact with chants from the crowd just taking the breath away from both men starting with Big lads wrestling before transitioning into This is awesome. When the two men locked up they were even counting each other with reversals before it turning into a forearm war that wouldn’t look out of place in a NJPW match for the NEVER Openweight belt. Chris Hero eventually hit two discuss elbows before dropping Rampage with a nasty Tombstone Piledriver to pick up the win in a beautiful war.

In a match that failed to live up to the hype of the previous fight and ended up being a cool down match The London Riots defeated Sweet Jesus in just over 8 minutes to earn themselves a tag title shot tomorrow against The Origin. On a different day in a different slot there is no doubt this match would have been received a lot better.

In the co-main event of the evening Tommy End took the first step towards getting another shot at Marty Scurll’s belt by defeating Dave Mastiff with a beautiful head kick out of nowhere to take the big man down in 17:11. Rather surprisingly there was no involvement from The Origin to try help out Dave Mastiff, perhaps next time that will change.

In the main event of the evening the fans were treated to a true technical masterclass between two of the great British technicians of recent years when Zack Sabre pinned Doug Williams after a Penalty Kick in 21:57. Doug Williams proved he definitely can still go with the best despite coming to the end of his career at the age of 44 with some arguing he put in the better performance out of the two.
