Shane McMahon's WCW (2001)

Recommended Posts

I love a good tournament! My early prediction for winner has to be Giant. Booker trying to overcome the massive Giant (who is on his own roll after destroying the boss at Havoc) would make for an excellent Starrcade main event. But if I'm wrong, I look forward to seeing how you play it out!

Awesome looking tournament! I have to agree with Beejus in the early guess being the Giant for me as well. From build, I foresee O'Haire vs. Giant and RVD vs. DDP. But who knows?! Love the possibility as there are a few options I think could happen and was harder for me to guess. Also can't wait to see a few upsets!

WCW Worldwide - Week 1, November 2001

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Lash LeRoux vs Shawn Stasiak

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

David Flair vs Kanyon

Comments:

WCW Saturday Night - Week 1, November 2001

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Rob Van Dam vs Steve Corino

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Yoshihiro Tajiri vs Eddy Guerrero

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs Kaz Hayashi

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Norman Smiley vs La Parka

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

The Real D’Lo vs Raven

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - First Round

Diamond Dallas Page vs Christopher Daniels

Comments:

Like the guys above, I feel confident in the right side of the bracket leading to Giant-O'Haire but the left side is very tricky. Seems like 1 or 2 new people are going to get an opportunity

That's quite ambitious, I have to say. I usually do a New Japan and have the Crockett Cup before Starrcade or a cross-promotional show if I can manage it. A 32-man tournament is somewhat worrying, I have to say. Shades of the old gimmick Starrcades, in fact.

Hope you knock it out of the park!

Match Report:

Daniels tries to tire Page out in the early going, using his speed to evade DDP’s strikes and lay in several glancing blows. He takes Page down to the canvas, working on the arm with wringers and shoulder-breakers. DDP tries to mount a comeback with the crowd’s support, but James Mitchell at ringside trips him. Daniels is able to hit the Last Rites — one… two… thr— kick-out! Daniels is shocked, beginning to get flustered. He tries to get DDP up for the Angel’s Wings, but Page wriggles out and hits a Diamond Cutter out of nowhere! BANG! The WCW World Heavyweight Championship… I’ve been to the mountain top three times… I’m going back up again. Booker T, I hope you’re ready man. Me and you, Starrcade 2001… one more time.” The crowd cheers as the show goes off the air.

Not particularly over, poor entertainment skills, zero menace. But don't worry, I have plans. xD

Storm is forced to bail to the outside, but has to roll back in before he’s counted out — and the beating continues! Clark sets up for the chokeslam, but Storm kicks him in the gut and begins to wear the big man down.

Match Report:

Shane Helms is still wearing his superhero costume from Halloween Havoc, and is accompanied by Shannon Moore & Evan Karagias. Helms seems more interested in playing to the crowd than pressing the advantage, but the match eventually becomes an even, back-and-forth matter. Karagias jumps onto the apron to distract the referee, as Moore slides a steel-chair into the ring for Helms to use — but the superhero won’t do it! Hurricane Helms is insistent that he did the right thing: “Cheaters never prosper, citizen. You wanted a superhero to break the law? Wassup with dat?” Moore gives Helms a hard look, then simply says: “I’m done with this. This superhero crap, this 3 Count crap, everything.” Karagias looks on mournfully as Moore leaves, then eyes Helms with a glare and walks off too, clearly blaming him. Let’s talk about… A Flair for the Gold!” He shows video footage of Starrcade 1983’s main-event — Ric Flair beating Harley Race in a steel cage for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Booker puts over the importance of the bout for both WCW and wrestling history, before promising another classic recap next week.

Description:

Chuck Palumbo is backstage preparing for his match with the Giant, when O’Haire joins him. O’Haire asks Palumbo if he’s ready, reminding him that he hasn’t wrestled since being forced to surrender in WarGames. He gestures at Palumbo’s still-bandaged arm, and tells him to be careful out there.

Palumbo gets in O’Haire’s face: “You don’t think I can do this, Sean? Well, I’ll show you — I’ll show everybody. I’m not the weak link of this team.” O’Haire looks a bit surprised at the overreaction, but says: “…I’m glad you’re so pumped up, man.

Match Report:

A strange dynamic, as the monstrous Palumbo is dwarfed by Giant, and has to rely on his agility. Giant’s huge arms eventually grab Palumbo, and he throws him into the corner and wallops him with skillet-sized palms. Palumbo tries to rally with a few punches, before attempting to Irish whip his opponent — the injured arm gives out, and Giant simply shrugs off Palumbo and hits a huge chokeslam for the win. The match seemed surprisingly one-sided, with Palumbo really not making much of a dent.

Long-time WWF fans may remember that Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant once teamed as the Mega Bucks — this new tandem is unlikely to main-event quite as many house-shows.

A ‘Ten-Man Mayhem’ match has been announced to round out the Mayhem PPV card at the end of November. It seems designed to act as a buffer between the various tournament matches on that show, along with getting some of the bigger stars no longer in the tournament on the card. The only name announced thus far is Booker T. The Ten-Man Mayhem match will be held under tornado tag rules and be one fall to a finish, promising a chaotic bout.

A range of talents have held try-outs in recent weeks as WWF management intend on formally separating their developmental territories. Ohio Valley Wrestling will be exclusively for talents intended for WCW, while Heartland Wrestling Association will house WWF’s developmental workers. Note that this separation is far from concrete, as it’s expected that plans may change and various talents will shift between the territories, and may be called up to any of the two promotions.

Speaking of developmental, the next talent to be called up to WCW is Rob Conway, a polished if unspectacular worker. Initial plans seem to point towards reforming his tag-team with Nick Dinsmore, which was known as the ‘Lords of the Ring’ in OVW. No word yet if he’ll be saddled with the same lame surgeon gimmick. He appears to be going face, despite most reports from OVW indicating that Conway is a natural heel.

We’ve been asked to comment on the rumours circulating that a major former WCW star is expected to return in time for Starrcade.

Description:

The show starts with Rob Van Dam making his way to the ring, whereupon he grabs a mic and talks very slowly and simply, proclaiming himself: “Mr. Saturday Night, Mr. Pay-Per-View, Mr. WCW, and soon? Because I’m Rob… Van… D—“

Kanyon’s music hits and RVD’s pumped up opponent for tonight heads down to the ring, pacing back and forth with a look of complete focus. He has no words for Van Dam, who just shrugs and begins stretching as he warms up for the match.

Match Report:

As the bell rings, Kanyon goes straight for RVD, proving his point with a series of strikes and suplexes. Van Dam cuts Kanyon off with a thrust kick out of nowhere however, and begins working on the ribs — Mike Tenay on commentary notes that a rib injury took Kanyon out of action over the Summer, and remains a nagging pain for the Innovator of Offense.

RVD begins to get cocky as he dishes out offense to Kanyon, turning his back and performing his thumb-pointing taunt before springboarding off the top rope for a split-legged moonsault. Kanyon manages to roll out of the way, however — and Van Dam gets nothing but the ring canvas! Staggering to his feet, Kanyon drags up RVD and nails a desperation Flatliner. RVD kicks out just after three, but it’s too late — Kanyon advances!

Chavo makes them an offer, which they regard dubiously: “There’s been a lot of interference and ring-side shenanigans the last two weeks, man. Let’s cut a deal — no Radicalz at ringside, no Dragons at ringside.

Match Report:

True to the bargain struck, Eddy Guerrero and Kaz Hayashi are out alone, with the two exchanging arm-drags and drop-kicks early. The fast pace continues throughout the bout, with neither getting much of an advantage — until Kaz nails a Hayashi Cutter out of nowhere! The ref counts one… two… and is pulled out of the ring and decked from behind by Chavo Guerrero Jr., who had been hiding under the ring!

Kaz is furious at the deal being broken, hitting a tope con hilo to the outside that wipes Chavo out! He enters back into the ring, and is caught with a hard punch from Eddy that knocks him out hard, blood beginning to trickle from his forehead. Something gleams as Eddy begins to fiddle with his tights — he had a pair of brass knuckles secreted away! Stowing the knuckles, Eddy gets the win as the revived referee crawls back into the ring to count the three — Kaz isn’t moving at all, his face a crimson mask.

You like this Top Contender’s Tournament? Let’s talk about Starrcade ’89, dog.” Footage is shown of the participants in 1989’s one-night Iron Man tournament — Sting, Lex Luger, Ric Flair and Great Muta. We see all four men in action against each other, before reaching a main-event of Sting and Flair — the two exchange their biggest moves, before Sting catches the Nature Boy off-guard with a small package to win!

Match Report:

Both wrestlers start things slow, neither wanting to make a crucial mistake in the early stages of the match. Raven gets control, beginning to wear down DDP with arm-wringers, aiming to soften up the limb. Page makes a comeback with crowd support, hitting a few big moves including the spinning gutwrench powerbomb and discus clothesline. He aims for a Diamond Cutter, but Raven is able to power out due to the weakened arm, and instead hits him with an Evenflow DDT!

One… two… kick-out! Page has survived Raven’s finisher, which only serves to enrage his opponent. The two exchange slugging forearms as they struggle to remain upright, before Raven blocks a Diamond Cutter attempt, DDP blocks an Evenflow attempt, and the two collapse in a heap on the floor, still beating on each other. The tussle continues until Raven manages to cradle DDP, holding the tights hard as he sneaks a win! Raven bails from the ring quickly, clearly not wanting to linger as Page holds his head in his hands, disappointed with the result.

It’s a minor injury however, and he will be benched for around a week to allow him to recover. At last week’s Saturday Night dark matches, his partner Air Styles instead teamed with Shane Helms, who has a new superhero gimmick — ‘Hurricane’ Helms.

In a more major injury, Shannon Moore picked up a damaged knee-cap on the same show facing WCW TV champion Steve Corino. He’s expected out for around a month, which must be frustrating for Moore as an angle involving him joining the James Mitchell stable was expected to play out in the coming weeks, given that 3 Count have went their separate ways.

In a follow-up from last week’s rumor on a major WCW star returning in time for Starrcade, we can reveal that a deal has indeed been made, and that said star will be returning on television some time in December for a build towards their re-debut match, to be held on PPV. Who is it? You’ll see the name on other sites if you really want to find it, but we prefer to keep things a surprise where possible. Why ruin the moment?

Huge changes have occurred in the developmental leagues, Ohio Valley Wrestling and Heartland Wrestling Association. We’ve hinted at what’s to come in past weeks, but the rosters have now been officially restructured — OVW will house WCW prospects, while HWA takes the WWF’s developmental talent. We’ll have lists of the key talents in each promotion next week, along with some of the new hires that have been brought in to pad out each roster.

I’m not sure exactly when this happened, but in recent shows, Kid Romeo’s name appears to have been shortened to Romeo. We’re not quite sure why, but when we reached out to the man himself for comment, Romeo had this to say: “Do I look like a kid to you, huh?”

The tournament brackets:

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z459/kazkukat/WCW%202001/mayhemw3_zpsrjerdask.png

WCW Saturday Night - Week 4, November 2001

WCW Television Championship

Steve Corino © vs Jamie Knoble

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - Second Round

Lance Storm vs Brian Adams

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - Second Round

Mark Jindrak vs Hugh Morrus

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - Second Round

Sean O’Haire vs Dean Malenko

Comments:

Top Contender’s Tournament - Second Round

The Giant vs Billy Kidman

Comments:
