Description:
Booker T is out first, and begins cutting a promo on the Giant: “Man, you gotta know by now — it doesn’t matter if it’s America, Japan, Mexico… Europe, Africa, Australia or the goddamn Moon, sucka… you can beat down Booker T but he’ll get right back up. I know you’re in the back, Giant — so let’s dance, dog. Let’s get this over with — hit me with your best shot! Vamos, sucka!” Booker stands defiant as the Giant’s music plays and the WCW World Heavyweight Champion comes striding down to ringside with a mean look on his face.

Giant is about to enter the ring when Arn Anderson comes out on stage. The Enforcer gives an ultimatum: “Look, I can’t have you two tearing each other apart every week between now and Revenge. I hate to do this, but I’m laying down the law — Giant, Booker, you can’t touch each other until the pay-per-view. If you do, Giant will be stripped of the Heavyweight title, and Booker will be barred from title contention.” Giant and Booker shoot each other a glare, neither seeming to like these terms. “What’s more,” Arn continues, “I’m appointing a special guest referee at Revenge, to keep the fight clean and ensure a decisive result. Somebody who isn’t afraid to stand up to either of you and do the right thing.” Also Sprach Zarathrusa echoes throughout the arena as Ric Flair comes out to join Anderson, nodding and grinning. “It’s me! I’m the referee! I’m the special-guest referee! Woooo!”

Match Report:
As Elix Skipper and Kash lock up, Heenan wonders what to call the trio of Skipper, Romeo and Karagias: “They were XXX with Jamie Knoble and XXY with Kwee Wee… is this XXZ?” Skipper and Kash exchange exciting arm-drags and throws, before Skipper is tossed to the outside and Kash hits a vaulting dive on top of him. “An impressive Pescado”, Tenay remarks. “A what? That’s Spanish for fish,” Heenan snorts. “I knew there was something fishy about these guys.” Kash tags into Wright, and the WCW Television Champion runs wild with high-energy offence. Romeo and Karagias hit the ring to halt Das Wunderkind’s momentum, but the Megabucks make the save with stereo dropkicks. Wright puts Skipper away with a bridging German Suplex to advance!

Raven is backstage, shaking his head and smirking at nobody in particular. “The definition of insanity,” he chuckles to himself, “is doing the same thing over and over and over again… and expecting different results. Did I hear you right last week, Page? You want one more match, you want to face me again? I’m intrigued, I’ll admit — intrigued to see what will happen when I beat you a third time. You’ve heard whispers about hanging those boots up, but with each stumble and misstep… with each loss and embarrassment, those whispers are going to get louder and louder until it becomes a deafening wall of sound.” He lets out another laugh, then concludes: “I -will- face you at Revenge, Page. So rage, rage against the dying of the light. Do not go gentle into that good night. Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay — rage, rage against the dying of the light…”

Match Report:
The Mexican crowd pop big when the New World Order’s music hits, but seem less than pleased to see that it’s simply The Funkster dressed in black and white strumming an air guitar, Flash Flanagan with slicked back hair and a tooth-pick, and Lash LeRoux in a singlet and leather fringed pants. Were they expecting Hogan, Nash and Hall in a Cruiserweight tournament? Regardless, the bait and switch seems to leave the crowd cold, and they instead gravitate behind Los Rudos. They even cheer the cheating luchadores whenever Psychosis distracts the referee and La Parka whacks Funkster in the head with his steel chair. The bumbling nWo are no match for the devious Rudos, and as Parka and Psychosis move to brawl with Lash and Flash on the outside, Abismo Negro hits the Martinete Especial (a double underhook piledriver) on Funkster for the win.

Sean O’Haire strides out to ringside again, looking even more frustrated and impatient than last week. “You hid from me last week, Chuck. We can’t keep doing this every week, one of these days I -will- find you. And the longer you make me wait, the longer and the worse that beating’s going to get. I’m not going to forgive you, and I’m not going to forget this.” He waits for Palumbo, but is instead surprised to see Torrie Wilson come out on stage. “Sean… Sean baby, Chuck would love to meet you face to face and talk out this little misunderstanding,” she explains in a condescending manner. “But he’s booked in for a makeover this week and simply could not attend. You should have -seen- his fingernails, believe me.” O’Haire’s face shows a mixture of disbelief and anger, but Torrie adds: “Next week, Sean. He’ll be here next week, the new and improved Chuck Palumbo. It’s going to be beautiful, just beautiful, Sean.”

Match Report:
We see a replay of last week, as the New Japan team got screwed by the Family before Liger cleared house. Vicious is out with Crowbar, Daffney and Christopher Daniels, and as Liger builds a head of steam in the opening stretch, his momentum is stalled when Crowbar trips him. Vicious begins working on the Beast God with… well, vicious armlocks and hip-tosses, before trying to rip at the veteran’s mask. Liger instead manages to snapmare the Prince of Punk, lock in the surfboard and begin a comeback that sees him pin Vicious clean in the middle with the Liger Bomb.

Ric Flair is backstage talking to Charles Robinson, who is getting his measurements for a referee shirt. An ominous shadow falls over both of them, as Flair turns his head and comes face to chest with the Giant! “Listen to me, old man,” Giant snarls. “You tried to defend Booker last week, but if you try to screw me at Revenge, you’re going to find out what it’s like to be on my bad side. Just ask Shane McMahon.” Flair gives him a bit of an uncertain smirk, before assuring him: “I’m going to call it right down the middle. Do I look like a crooked referee to you?” Charles Robinson stutters, and begins to speak: “But you’re the Dirtiest Player—“ Flair shuts him down, muttering: “Zip it!” Giant grins menacingly, looking between the two like a predator eyeing his next meal, before nodding and saying “Good.” He walks off, leaving Flair to glare at Robinson.

The Técnicos are no-nonsense tonight, dazzling their opponents with dives and headscissors. Midway through, Sanders decides that he’s had enough and throws down his pompadour wig, before heading to the back. Siaki and Estrada fall prey to the numbers game, with Metal applying a crucifix armbar on SIaki for the submission win.

Match Report:
O’Haire is still angry, taking his frustrations out on Chavo with huge powerslams. Clark blind-tags in, and KroniK and O’Haire begin yelling at each other, no love lost after their Starrcade bout. The savvy Eddy takes advantage of the distraction to begin wearing down Clark, who plays mastodon in peril trying to shove away the wily Latino Heat. Clark makes the hot tag to Kidman, who runs wild with dropkicks and crossbodies, and tags out to Adams just before wiping out Saturn and Chavo on the outside with a springboard shooting star press. The referee tries to restore order as O’Haire, KroniK, Malenko and Eddy all begin brawling in the ring — and as he pushes O’Haire and Clark into their corner, doesn’t see Lance Storm slide in and hit Adams on the button with a superkick! The dazed Adams falls prey to a hurricanrana and frog splash from Eddy, who steals the pin!

News and Notes: Week 3, January 2002:

  • Of the participants in last week’s Cruiserweight tournament matches in Mexico City, backstage opinion has been mixed. Sonny Siaki and Jorge Estrada performed poorly, and have been jettisoned back to OVW for further polishing. Psychosis and Juventud Guerrera were both known quantities who delivered in the ring, but Juventud’s history of behavioural problems (including an October 2000 incident wherein he ran down hotel corridors naked and screaming, said to be under the influence of PCP — this led to his WCW release) is likely to weigh heavily against his chances at a full-time return. Abismo Negro and Heavy Metal both impressed as young and hungry talents, and management will be watching their next match carefully.

  • I don’t know if this is a sign of anything, but Jim Johnston (who know handles production on both WWF and WCW themes) is said to be working on a fast-paced hair metal theme. Heavy Metal uses the theme ‘Rainbow in the Dark’ by Dio, but licensed themes appear to be few and far between unless the promotion can cut a deal or your name is Triple H.

  • Following this week’s Worldwide television tapings, Psychosis tore a stomach muscle and will be out of action for around a month. Super Crazy has been contacted, and is being brought in as a last-minute replacement, to team with La Parka and Abismo Negro.

Here’s Chucky! |
Rating:
85

Description:
Torrie Wilson begins the show in the ring, speaking slowly and patronisingly to the audience: “Tsh, tsh — quiet now. As promised, after his makeover -all- last week, allow me to introduce you to the new and improved Chuck Palumbo!” A boy band-inspired theme floods the arena.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="
frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Chuck Palumbo comes strutting out in a white bathrobe with bleach-blond permed hair and a red headband reading “CHUCKY’. He gives Torrie a kiss on the cheek, saying “mwah” loudly. Torrie squeals in delight, saying “I told you he’d be beautiful. My beautiful Chucky P!” She passes Chuck the microphone and he gives a wink to the hard camera. “Ladies and gentlemen, but especially ladies… mmm.” He rubs himself a bit, playing with the belt of his bathrobe, before continuing: “This feels so good. For too long I’ve been living in Sean O’Haire’s shadow, as he claims all the credit for our successes, blames me for all our failures… I’ve taken it and taken it… but no more.” He wags his finger dramatically, as Torrie adds: “No more! Tell ‘em, Chucky!”

“You want to talk about Natural Born Thrillers? Well, I was -born- to stand in the spotlight alone. Look at me, look how muscular and sensual and perfect I am.” He smirks, undoing his bathrobe to expose his abs, glistening with baby-oil. “All the men want to be like me, all the women want to be with me. I’m a sex bomb and a heartbreaker, just call me the Chuck Magnet. My ascent to greatness begins tonight, and it’s going to be… beautiful, just beautiful.” He can’t help but grin ear to ear, posing and flexing as Torrie claps excitedly.

Length:

Rating:

Match Report:
As we come back from the commercial break, the new Chucky P is ready to take on Norman Smiley, who looks unimpressed with the makeover and instead mocks Palumbo by strutting around and doing the Big Wiggle. Chuck shows that he’s all business between the ropes however, taking Smiley down with shoulder -breakers and scoop slams. Smiley gets a brief flurry of offence, but the Chuck Magnet quickly regains control and finishes him off with Marc Mero’s old TKO.

Third Time’s the Charm |
Rating:

Description:
Chuck showboats and celebrates after his victory as Torrie begins rubbing him down with baby oil in a rather suggestive manner. Suddenly, Sean O’Haire’s music hits and the Widowmaker comes rushing down to ringside with bad intentions! Palumbo’s eyes nearly pop out of their sockets as Chucky P goes fleeing through the crowd, Torrie scampering after him on her high heels. O’Haire gets as far as the guardrail, but Palumbo has already ran out of sight and he just shakes his head, snorting. “Soon, Palumbo. I’m going to get you.”

Booker & Flair talk |
Rating:

Description:
Ric Flair is walking backstage when he comes to Booker T’s locker room and lets himself in. Booker is going push-ups and training, but sits up and greets Flair. “Yo dog, whatchu doing here, man?” Flair explains a little slowly that he can’t take sides at Revenge and he’ll do whatever he has to, to ensure a fair result. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Booker answers, before patting Flair on the shoulder. “What’s it you say, to be the Man you gotta beat the Man? Well, a man doesn’t cheat and a man doesn’t take shortcuts. When I beat Giant and take back my title, he’s not going to have -any- excuses. Now can you dig -that-, Sucka?” Flair nods with a grin, replying: “I can, Booker. Oh, I can. Woooo!”

Length:

Match Report:
Flanagan is accompanied to the ring by Hollywood Funkster, and seems agitated by his presence. “Get outta here, we’re not doing that nWo thing anymore,” Flash tries to explain to Funkster as he plays air guitar. “But the n-W-o is f-f-for life, brother!” Funkster responds. After Flash gives up on Funkster leaving, the match begins and Giant begins decimating him. Giant gives Flash ten open-palmed strikes in the corner then nails him with the chokeslam. Funkster jumps to the apron to try and distract, so Giant pulls him into the ring and chokeslams him too. He lays Flash and Funkster on top of each other and pins both for a dominant victory.

A Giant Challenge |
Rating:

Description:
Giant grabs the microphone afterwards, breathing heavily as he roars into it. “I’m just getting started! Booker… Booker T, get your ass out here, boy!” Booker takes the challenge and comes striding out, still in his work-out clothes — before security immediately comes rushing out to restrain him. Arn Anderson is out in a panicked and exasperated mood, pleading with both: “I -told- you, no contact until Revenge! Don’t make me fire both of your asses, for God’s sake! Please!” We go to commercial break as Booker walks to the back, surrounded by a dozen security as Giant just laughs gruffly in the ring.

Match Report:
The match is held under three-way dance rules, with one man from each team in at all times. Daniels, Hayashi and Kidman begin things with a fast-paced exchange of strikes and hurricanranas, before Crowbar tags himself in and begins playing powerhouse. The match keeps up its frenetic pace throughout, with the crowd seeming a little tired halfway through before picking up in the finishing sequence. Tajiri, Vicious and Paris are in whenever Tajiri catches Vicious with a buzzsaw kick that sends him falling back into his team’s corner — Daniels blind-tags in, and as Tajiri hits Paris with another huge kick, Daniels throws the Japanese Buzzsaw to the floor and covers Paris for the win!

Daniels calls out Liger |
Rating:

Description:
After commercial break, the Family is still in the ring whenever Daniels grabs a microphone, and challenges Jushin Thunder Liger. “Some say you’re a legend, some say you’re one of the best Cruiserweights of all time. I just see an overrated old man in a cheap costume — you’re nothing to me. So at Revenge, I’m challenging you — give me your best shot, show me you’re not just hype. Because if you can’t, I’m going to make my name at your expense, and you’re going back to Japan a national laughing stock.” Tenay notes on commentary that Liger isn’t here tonight, but that he’s sure he’d never back down from a challenge. I hope nobody was paying attention to the dark matches.

Description:
Gene Okerlund is backstage with the WCW World Tag Team Champions KroniK, and asks them if they have any thoughts on Team Canada’s attempted sneak-attack last week. Adams grabs the microphone and begins yelling: “TEAM CANADA, EH? REVENGE — IT’S A DISH BEST SERVED COLD, GENE MEAN. LIKE ICE CREAM, LIKE WATERMELON GAZPACHO, YEAH.” Clark nods, adding: “LIKE BEER.” Adams stares back at him seriously, interjecting: “BEER IS NOT A DISH.” Clark shrugs, responding “I’VE NEVER EVEN BEEN TO CANADA.” The two turn back to the camera and warn their opponents at Revenge that “THEY WILL FEEL TOTAL KRONIKCITY, YEAH.”

Match Report:
Tenay informs us that due to an injury, Super Crazy is replacing Psychosis. Los Rudos control the ring in the early going, dividing and conquering the other two teams with brawling and dirty grappling. The crowd are a little quiet at first, not seeming to know half of the competitors, but soon get into things as Juventud and Heavy Metal delight with high-flying aerial offence. Kash and EZ Money hit tandem dives to take out La Parka and Psychosis outside, and as Alex Wright hits the German suplex on Super Crazy, he’s hit with a dropkick by Juvi that breaks the bridge. Garza holds Crazy up for a piledriver as Heavy Metal comes off the top with the assist, spiking the luchadore hard on the mat. The Técnicos get the win and advance to the final.

Description:
Raven, Rob Van Dam and Team Canada are backstage preparing for the main event. Raven is slumped on the floor staring into space as Van Dam does the splits between two steel chairs, meditating. Awesome is lifting weights and Storm is thinking aloud: “So, Raven starts then… no, maybe -I- should start then… but then there’s KroniK and…” He stops mid-thought and calls out: “Alright, group brainstorm. Team, we need to come together and develop a robust and effective strategy for tonight!” Raven looks up at him and smirks, before getting to his feet and leaving. Van Dam uses his hands to support himself as he rises from his chair-assisted splits and shrugs, leaving too. Awesome just continues curling weights, ignoring his partner. Storm frowns, crossing his arms sheepishly, shaking his head: “This would never happen in Canada.”

Match Report:
RVD insists on starting the match, causing Storm to begin lecturing him on strategy. It makes little difference, as Van Dam locks up with DDP until Page tags out to a hungry Kanyon — and RVD decides he’d rather not start after all, blind-tagging Storm on the chest. Storm and Kanyon carry the bulk of the match, before Clark tags in and begins cleaning house on the Canadian grappler. Storm desperately tags in Awesome, and the two big men go back and forth until Awesome rocks Clark with a huge jab and causes him to fall backwards with arms swinging, squashing a hapless Charles Robinson beneath him. Things break down into complete madness with all eight men in the ring, and as a shellshocked Robinson stumbles to his feet and tries to restore order, he’s eventually forced to concede defeat and throws the match out.

News and Notes: Week 4, January 2002:

  • Following successful outings in the last two weeks of television, Abismo Negro has signed a full-time WCW contract and is starting on the road immediately. His name is being shortened to just ‘Abismo’ for marketing and merchandising reasons, as t-shirts with ‘Negro’ on them were judged to be in poor taste for English-speaking audiences. He is expected to continue his association with La Parka, possibly in an on-screen mentor/student role.

  • Jushin Thunder Liger continues to impress in his bouts, both televised and dark matches. He is expected to remain around following the Revenge pay-per-view, though for how long is not quite certain.

  • The WWF’s Royal Rumble event took place last Sunday, and in what appears to be a first since March 2001, a former WCW free-agent instead debuted for the Federation instead of returning to the new WCW — Dustin Rhodes, reprising his Goldust character. This may reflect the belief amongst management that the WCW brand is now stable enough to not require constant influxes of name talent, or it may simply be a one-off.

  • Rhodes’ Time Warner contract came due in December, and interestingly enough, so did that of Kevin Nash. With Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan’s contracts also expected to finish within the next month or so, it will be interesting to see if they’re brought into WWF or WCW — should they reach terms at all. The trio, best known as the founding members of the nWo, are notorious in the business of their behavioural issues and contract demands.

  • For those that haven’t read reports elsewhere, 2002’s Royal Rumble was well-received. In addition to Goldust, other returns included those of Rikishi and Big Boss Man after injuries — the match itself was won by the returning Triple H, last eliminating Kurt Angle. Elsewhere on the card, Chris Jericho defeated The Rock, defending the WWF Championship, William Regal defeated Edge to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship, and Spike Dudley and Tazz defended the WWF Tag Team Championship against the Dudley Boyz.

<p>1. Can't believe you brought back ... Chucky. Such a dead-end gimmick for a guy of Palumbo's potential.</p><p>

2. Abismo should be a good get, and Daniels-Liger will be very interesting.</p><p>

3. Dustin Rhodes not coming back to WCW is a darn shame. The Natural still has a great run to the top left in him!</p>

Crowbar reaches Daniels, who begins dismantling Metal as Juventud and Garza try rallying the fans by clapping. Metal is able to make the hot tag to Garza, who runs wild with arm drags, a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and a missile dropkick from the top for a near-fall. Daniels is staggered, and tags into Vicious, who instead gets nailed with arm drags of his own. As Daniels recuperates on the outside, Crowbar is knocked from the apron by Garza, who tags out to Juvi then wipes out Crowbar and Daniels with a topé suicida! DDP gets all his trademark spots in, including the discus clothesline, swinging neckbreakder, sit-out spinning powerbomb and then a Diamond Cutter for good measure. Tenay agrees, adding that a win against the WCW World Tag Team Champions would throw Skipper and Romeo right into top contention for that title. “No petitions needed,” Heenan jokes. Unfortunately for the Cruiserweight tandem, Clark soon gets his hands on Romeo and begins throwing him around. Team Canada get the message and roll from the ring, retreating up the ramp with their statement made. Clark and Adams stare them down from the ring, using the ropes to support their weight. “I HATE CANADIANS,” Adams yells. “YOUR FLAG IS A LEAF,” Clark adds. Scented candles have been lit, and calming new-age music plays in the background. Gene Okerlund comes barging in a little clumsily, knocking something on the floor over as Chuck bolts upright, removing the cucumber slices and gasping: “My chakra stones, they’re out of alignment! You’ve -completely- disturbed my feng shui, Gene — are you happy now?” Gene frowns, replying: “I had no— well, I was wondering if you had any comment on your match this Sunday with Sean O’Haire. He’s promised a beating — are you ready?”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Chuck shakes his head, muttering: “Of course I’m not ready. Have you seen the state of me? I have a -crisis- appointment with my hair stylist tomorrow morning, these split ends will drive me mad. Funkster barely makes it in by the count of ten, but Raven lays in more punishment and tosses him back out. Giant and Van Dam take their time with the Misfits, clearly not treating them seriously — until Morrus turns the tables on RVD and begins laying in a beating! He hits a huge spinebuster and goes up top for the No Laughing Matter before Giant lunges forward on the apron and lays him out with a huge knock-out punch!
