Some explanation on TV ratings needed

Recommended Posts

So I am trying to understand how TV ratings work a little bit more. I know that ratings will increase with the company size, the broadcaster size and the time slot, so all of this was tested and seems to work well.

Now I tried to touch the topic of how are TV ratings affected when you run against another company's show. My understanding was that the ratings should go down if you run your show on the same day and the same time slot as another major company like SWF, but I found out it actually isn't the case.

Here's an example in my game. I was playing the CV97 mod, running HGC Hollyweird TV on Tuesday late night on Arcadia. My ratings were around 7, while SWF Supreme TV (also Tuesday and also on Arcadia) was pulling out around 11.5 in ratings.

Now I adjusted my time slot to prime time, which isn't very realistic to start with, as the broadcaster Arcadia is now showing both HGC and SWF on Prime Time Tuesday, but I just went with it for testing purposes. I was expecting that I would 'steal' some of SWF viewers, and the ratings would be something like this: SWF 6.5 - HGC 5.5 for a total of 12 (close to the total that SWF was getting by itself on Prime Time). However, the change seemed to have no effect beside increasing HGC's ratings, due to the fact it moved from late evening to prime time. So the ratings of the first head-to-head were: SWF 11.45 - HGC 10.52

I would appreciate if Adam or someone else with the knowledge can explain to me how the system works

Is HGC product the same as SWF? if not it could explain why you increased but didn't take from SWF. For example WWF/E is sports entertainment ECW was full on Hardcore. Its two different products. That's not to say you wouldn't possibly steal fans but its unlikely. By moving to primetime you've simply made the HGC product more available to its type of fans instead of it only hitting the Late night fans

That would be my guess anyways

Unsure myself, but maybe test it with them on different networks? Obviously if you're on the same network then the shows aren't being shown at the same time, therefor you're not splitting the audience. They're just tuning into both shows one right after the other.
