How to create a foreign league?

How to make a new league

When you first open the program, at the very top you should see: New, Load, Save, Tools on the left side... click Tools.

In the Editors section, choose League File Editor

On the bottom of the page, choose New File

Now you can define every aspect of your new league. For a foreign league choose an area other than North America. I suggest creating your teams before filling out all the options for your league. I also caution that I've had trouble with the game crashing when I try to add tiered and/or developmental leagues. It can work but you may have to play with various options so be prepared to put some time into it if you're going to have a tiered or developmental league.

Once you have created your league, then you can activate it whenever you start a new career. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the help. I did successfully create a league in Cameroon using your instructions. It's a very time-consuming process, but it works.

All the names are American, though, and all of the players are rated "red," in other words, awful. Do you actually have to create a player file and create each player manually??

I looked through the game files and I see a folder for foreign leagues, with placeholder files. It's apparent that there was some intention by the developer to make foreign leagues possible, but probably there will never be a simple way to do it.

If FBPB were as flexible and easily customizable as OOTP Baseball, it would go from being merely "very good" to "great."

I noticed a "Senegal" file in one of the game's sub-folders and tried to create a Senegal league. Unfortunately I got a "run-time error 6" message after creating the teams and the league.

I wish this game had some support from GDS.

Quality of players

The quality of the randomly generated players is based on the league's Prestige. It looks like the default is set to "Regional" which is the lowest setting.

Personally, when I start a new league that I expect to grow (I set movement/expansion to random) I like to start with Regional players and ever few years set it up a level (National) for one year to simulate a good crop of rookies. Then as the league grows I put it up a notch permanently (to National) and then do the same again with a random raise to Continental and eventually work my way up to a permanent global rating.

After you have your league up and running, be sure to look at League Options on the Tools page to fine tune some of the settings such as how teams view trading.

Non-english names

The files in the Nations sub-folder SHOULD tell the game what name files to use. If they're not doing that... you might try renaming the English.txt file in both the FirstNames and LastNames sub-directories and then make a copy of the desired regional name file (African.txt) and name it English.txt.

I'll try playing with it and see if I can figure out a better way but in the meanwhile this might be your only option.

African names

I just created a test league and was able to get (mostly) African names in my league. Here's what I did...

I created a new league and placed it in Nigeria and saved it. But when I tried to start a new career using this league some of the settings were over-written. Specifically, I had to make sure that it was set in Africa because even though my league was saved as taking place in Africa, the act of starting a new career wanted to place my league in the default North America.

Once I made sure I had this (and all other setting correct) I launched my league and got (mostly) African names. I guess the moral here is to double-check everything before moving on to the next step.

Thanks again. I will try that tomorrow. I really, really enjoy this game, but it would be nice if Grey Dog provided a little more support.

This game has so many of the features I look for in a sports management sim. It should be a lot more popular and widely known.

The players are all rated "red," even though I gave the league a continent-wide reputation. The names are mostly African. It is a two-conference, four division league with 16 teams, based in Nigeria, with an 82 game schedule and a $75 million salary cap. The start date is 2000.

Maybe I will add more teams at some point.

Thanks very much for explaining the process of creating a foreign league. It's great to have a game that allows you to "play" in the NBA universe, but with sports management sims I sometimes like to "go abroad," so to speak, where I have no preconceived notions about how the league should look.

For this Nigerian league I am running Ibadan in the Southern Conference.

You're very welcome. I'm glad that I could help. I have no idea what the dev is working on now. He's taken a copy of a couple of my leagues that are throwing errors but I don't know how much time he has to work on them or if he's too busy with developing a new version or a working on a different sport sim altogether. Not much news coming down from above.

Good luck with your league. You probably won't get a lot of really good players until you set it have global prestige.
