TEW 2016 Mod Installer

Having used this with the Mod Squad Mods recently, I've now decided to create a thread and make this open for anyone who wishes to use the same software and distribution for their own mods, skins, graphics to provide for people who want a one-click solution to installing their mods, rather than only giving manual instructions.

Modder FAQ

Q: How does it work?

In the files folder of the installation, are your TEW 2016 sections of assets. Simply put in the files into these folders as you would normally for a manual installation.

You do not need to create a "SaveGames" folder inside Databases, as this is created when installing your package files to the user.

Please note that Skins, Pictures and Databases folders must be less than 24 characters for TEW to recognise them after installation. Folder names are created exactly as you put them as part of the Mod Installer.

Q: What about Music files?

Simply create a sub folder in Music with the name that you wish to identify the file. The file inside Music can be called anything you want. When installed, it will install directly into TEW's Music folder.

Q: Does this replace the original Take a Bow music file?

No, if a Take_a_Bow.mp3 file is found, it is renamed so that your file can be installed.

Q: What if I have simply an update to push out with a skin or picture pack?

Just include all the files in the pictures/skin sub folders and they will be installed upon Installation into the folder you have named.

Files you install overwrite the ones in the TEW folders, so you can either provide an installer with all the complete files as part of a skin or picture pack, or just the ones you wish to update.

Q: How can I skin the Installer for my own Modded Updates?

The Mod Installer comes with its own generic skin, but if you wish, you can customise the appearance of the skin by editing the CSS files in the CSS folder.

Q: How can I release a video with my Mod Installer like the Mod Squad did?

In the Media Folder, there is a documentation file that explains this.

You first need to change the enable_media.dat file to 1 to enable video.

In the media.dat file you simply contain the file path to the video you wish to play, for example:

 ./media/myvideo.avi

Q: What are the supported video formats?

The supported video formats will depend on the user's codecs they have installed. There is not a complete list of supported formats, but the Mod Squad used a AVI file with their original installer.

Q: What are the terms and licensing conditions?

The program cannot be redistributed for a fee and is licensed under GNU LGPL v3, and must be credited to the Mod Squad & Swerve Section in your release notes (this is also contained in the program's 'Legal' section).

User FAQ

Q: How do I install the mod using the Mod Installer?

Download the Mod Installer and Extract the Zip into a folder (for example on your Desktop).

Run the program "ModInstaller".

Select the items you want to install from the Mod Installer for Database, Music, Pictures and Skin.

Select Install Selected, the installer will install.

Q: The Installer is asking me for a location to install the Mod!

This means you are on a 32-bit system of Windows, or you have installed TEW into a different location.

Select TEW's install folder (ie. C:\Program Files\GDS\TEW2016\) and press Ok to begin the installation.

Q: There were some errors with the installation, or I noticed some issues with the software:

When the installation completes, select View Log, a text log will be created stating if there were any issues.

You can send these to MrCreative on GDS who will take a look.

Q: I really like this software, can I use this to redistribute with my own mod?

Yes!

You can also change the "Skin" of the program so that the background, colours and appearances meet your own specifications, see the /css, /files and /media folders for more information.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

It would be great if those of you that use this for distribution just let me know that you are using it and how you are finding it, similarly anybody who uses this as a user as well.

:)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The Mod Installer saved me an immense amount of time getting the Golden Age installed. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

  • 3 years later...
I had to send a request to you in order to be able to get access to the file from the link. I figured I should say something here since you probably wouldn't recognize my name at all. Thanks for this it seems like it's going to make things so much faster and organized.
