WWE 2016: Brand Split

Recommended Posts

During the month of May a lot of rumors were heard about SmackDown going live again, and about a brand split happening. Rumors soon turned to an official announcement, saying that immediately following Extreme Rules there would be a WWE Network Special called WWE Draft 2016, where the new rosters would be drafted. At Extreme Rules, Chairman of the Board Vince McMahon came out and gave some details about the Draft. He then called his son and daughter to the ring and made the decision that going forward Stephanie will run RAW while Shane will run SmackDown. He ended up saying that info about the future of WWE has been put on WWE.com.

Here’s what the info revealed:

- WWE Superstars and WWE Main Event have been cancelled effective immediately.

- A new female-only show will start airing on Friday nights, called WWE Pulse.

- The Elimination Chamber Pay-Per View is back, and will be replacing WWE Fastlane as the Pay-Per View between Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

- There will again be held qualifying matches for stuff like the Royal Rumble match, Elimination Chamber, Money In The Bank, King of the Ring etc., and Survivor Series will go back to favor the traditional Survivor Series Team vs. Team matches.

- As already announced, the Cruiserweight Championship will return. This will happen as part of a new initiative, the first ever WWE Cruiserweight World Cup. The tournament is exclusively for wrestlers who are NOT currently signed to WWE or NXT. 16 superstars from 16 different countries of the world will enter this tournament, and the winner will leave as the brand new WWE Cruiserweight World Champion. The tournament will be exclusively on the WWE Network airing each Wednesday starting on July 6th and all the way to the final which will take place at Night of Champions. Last time the Cruiserweight Championship was around the majority of the fans felt like it was being treated like a joke, but that won’t happen this time as it’s been revealed that WWE will favor serious high flying action.

The following WWE Draft special on WWE Network went extremely well. Stephanie and Shane were clearly done working together, and fought to get who they wanted and who they believe is right for the vision that each of them has for their brand and WWE. After a night of surprises where some questions were left unanswered, this is how the rosters looks.

June – Week 1, 2016

Before the opening of the show, a video package is shown recapping last night's Extreme Rules Pay-Per View, and the following Draft Special on WWE Network.

GRADE: B

The RAW opening video plays, before Michael Cole, John "Bradshaw" Layfield and Byron Saxton welcomes everyone to the first Monday Night RAW after last night's brand split.

GRADE: B-

Stephanie McMahon opens the show. Earlier today WWE.com reported that she would open tonight's RAW with an announcement regarding Money In The Bank, and that is exactly what she does. She announces that all titles matches and the Money In The Bank Ladder match will be RAW vs. SmackDown matches. Meaning that titles will be defended against an opponent from the opposite brand, and the Money In The Bank Ladder match will consist of three superstars from RAW and three superstars from SmackDown. Roman Reigns interrupts and ask who he will face at Money In The Bank. Stephanie says that he should worry about that another time because tonight he should worry more about his opponent in the main event, and then out on the stage comes the Dudley Boyz. Stephanie says that if Reigns is wondering which one of the Dudley's he’s facing, he will face both of them in a Handicap match.

GRADE: B

Money In The Bank Qualifier

Jack Swagger vs. Sheamus

In a more or less open contest Sheamus ended up getting the upper hand at the right time, which resulted in a Brogue Kick for "The Real American" before Sheamus got the pin to be the first to qualify for this year's Money In The Bank match.

GRADE: C+

COMMERCIALS

After the break we go backstage where Roman Reigns and The Usosare seen talking. The Usos says that they've got Reigns’ back, but Reigns says he’s got it. Stephanie McMahon comes by and tells The Usos that they should listen to Reigns, and by the way they have a match as well, and it’s next.

GRADE: D+

The Usos vs. The Ascension

The Ascension tried to get the upper hand by using their strength advantage, but in the end a Superkick from Jey to Viktor to set up the Samoan Splash from Jimmy got the win for the Uso-twins.

GRADE: C+

Post match The Usos celebrate their win, but is suddenly attacked by SmackDown's The Vaudevillains! Aiden English and Simon Gotch knocks The Usos down quickly, and after exposing of Jimmy they connect the Whirling Dervish on Jey before leaving.

GRADE: C-

COMMERCIALS

After the commercials replay of The Vaudevillains attacking The Usos is shown, while the commentators talk about what happened.

GRADE: C-

Alicia Fox vs. Emma

Emma got the upper hand first and tauned Fox and the fans, but eventually Fox managed to gain more and more momentum. In the end though, a small distraction from Emma's partner in crime Dana Brooke was enough to create an opening for Emma, and seconds later Fox tapped in the Emma Lock.

GRADE: D-

We then head backstage again, and JoJo is standing by with The Miz. JoJo asks Miz about having to face a SmackDown superstar for the Intercontinental Championship at Money In The Bank, and JoJo also mentions that that means that if Miz loses he won’t see the title again for at least two months because of the brand split. Miz says that it doesn't matter who he’ll face, because the title stays with him on RAW.

GRADE: B

The commentators acknowledges what The Miz just said and graphics on the screen is shown while they announce a Fatal 4-Way tomorrow night on the first live edition of Tuesday Night SmackDown to decide who will face The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship at Money In The Bank. Alberto Del Rio vs. Cesaro vs. Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler.

A surprisingly near-great match, and although Fandango tried to distract Zayn from ringside, Zayn managed to connect with the Helluva Kick and get the win to advance.

Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth

A short but decent match ends up with a What's Up that secures R-Truth the win.

GRADE: C-

We return and Tom Phillips is standing by with Sami Zayn in the backstage area. Phillips asks about Zayn qualifying for the Money In The Bank Ladder match, but as Zayn gets ready to answer he is suddenly attacked by Sheamus who beats him down while screaming at Zayn asking him who he thinks he is, and if he thinks he can win the Money In The Bank match. GRADE: B+

Money In The Bank Qualifier

Heath Slater vs. John Cena

This one looked like easy pickings for the 15-time World Champion John Cena, but Slater really surprised everyone in this match, including Cena seemingly, by hanging in there. Slater even managed to get some offense going on multiple occasions, and even came half a second from getting the huge upset win as he connected with his Smash Hit on Cena and kept him down for a 2½-count. In the end though Cena planted Slater with an Attitude Adjustment, and put Slater away.

GRADE: C+

Post match, John Cena gives Heath Slater a look of surprise before nodding in recognition of Slater's performance and showing of heart and determination.

GRADE: B

2-on-1 Handicap

The Dudley Boyz vs. Roman Reigns

Both Reigns and The Dudley Boyz had their share of momentum in this match, as they action went back and forth on more than one occasion. Towards the end it seemed like The Dudleys stopped caring about winning as they picked up steel chairs, but before they got to use them Enzo & Cass' music hit and out came Big Cass. Cass caught the attention of both Dudleys from the ramp, just enough for Reigns to get to his feet. Bubba turned around and walked right into a Superman Punch which sent hi through the ropes, and Reigns then quickly Speared D-Von and covered him to get the win.

Kalisto landed on his feet and charged Owens, but Owens saw it coming and managed to hit the Pop-Up Powerbomb to get the win to advance.

GRADE: B-

Charlotte comes to the ring and talks about still being the Women’s Champion, and doing it by herself after kicking her spotlight-stealing father to the curb. Natalya interrupts, but Charlotte just laughs at her for being out there since she can’t challenge for the title being that Charlotte has to face someone from RAW. Natalya says that that doesn’t prevent her from beating her tonight. Charlotte declines the challenge, but Shane McMahon comes out and makes the match and says it will start now.

GRADE: C-

Charlotte vs. Natalya

Good women's match here. Halfway through the match Charlotte tried leaving, but Natalya prevented her. Charlotte then tried rolling Natalya up and grabbing the ropes for leverage, but Natalya kicked out. In the end Natalya got Charlotte in the Sharpshooter, and Charlotte decided to quickly tap.

We head backstage where Tom Phillips is ready with Cesaro as his guest. Phillips asks Cesaro about the Fatal 4-Way, and Cesaro says that he would like nothing more than to get his hands on The Miz, shutting him up and taking the Intercontinental Championship back with him to SmackDown. Alberto Del Rio walks in and says that tonight Cesaro will be left speechless when Del Rio leaves with the Intercontinental Championship opportunity, but Del Rio says that Cesaro should at least be happy that Del Rio will bring the title to SmackDown.

GRADE: C+

Money In The Bank Qualifier
