Normally these hours before showtime consist of panic, stress, screaming and a family-sized bout of swearing. This had especially been the case before our last couple of shows - you can't help but freak out when your Japanese superstar is in the wrong country, or when your much-hyped new talent's spine falls out. You have to adapt, to cover, to manage. Or in my case, make shit up and hope you get away with it. After New Blood: Chapter 2, people were getting worried about me. The job was getting to me. My eyes were bloodshot, my forehead wet with sweat - and I hadn't even been wrestling. I looked like I'd been killed but my body had kept on moving. Road agent Rachel Summerlyn, Father Milo Augustini, Swedish Dave and a couple of the other guys staged a mini-intervention, basically telling me <strong>I needed to chill, or my head would explode</strong>. I looked worse than when I was a junkie - and that's saying something.</span> So I took their advice. I chilled out. I deliberately booked a card with no outside talent - just solid, professional guys I knew we could count on. I unplugged my answer-phone. I turned off my cellphone. Sure, something was bound to go wrong - it always does in the wacky world of pro wrestling - but why give yourself a heart attack over it? At RTG we have a talented roster full of guys willing to move hell and earth to entertain the fans. There comes a time when you just have to step back and let the pieces fall where they may. So instead of running around like a crack-addled Duracell bunny, I was having a 'working lunch' with Jerrelle Clark. And by 'working lunch' I mean nachos and beer at a local sports bar, along with pool, boxing on TV, and a healthy amount of bullshit.</p><p class="blacktext"><span class="bluetext">"I always thought HBK was over-rated"</span> said Jerrelle, licking nacho cheese from his lips. <span class="bluetext">"Sure Michaels was a great entertainer, but I don't see why people idolize him so much. You're a prime example - you wrestled the guy once, got your nose busted in a cheap shot, got treated like an asshole - yet you worship the guy like a God."</span> He stifled a burp, hoping I wouldn't notice. I just laughed.<span class="othertext"> "The guy just had the 'it' factor. He was so much larger than life - he could blow his nose and make it look spectacular. No matter what he did - good or bad - people took notice. It just all came natural, and all went towards fueling this mythos which would surround him his whole career. It's that intangible Star Quality that sees some guys catapulted to superstardom, while others fall by the wayside, whether they deserve it or not. I mean look at Matt Stryker - hell of a guy, fantastic wrestler, consummate professional - but the guy has a face like a b-movie werewolf. Can you see WWE putting a face like his all over their magazines? Can you see his face launching a new range of kid's action figures? Talent counts for jack shit in circumstances like that. So when you come across a guy like Michaels who has the looks <i>and</i> the talent, it's like some kind of seismic event."</span></p><p class="blacktext"><span class="bluetext">"I guess that's what makes us RTG peeps different"</span> mused Jerrelle earnestly, stroking his chin like some kind of professor. <span class="bluetext">"We don't need no marketing bullshit. It doesn't matter to us whether your face looks right or if you meet some stupid demographic. It's a bunch of guys who never made it - but probably should - going at it 100% and doing what they love. That's why I like it here - it's great to be away from all the politics and the bullshit - which was another thing guys like HBK excelled in by the way. I never digged HBK. I was more of an old-school guy. For me it was guys like B Brian Blair, Lanny Poffo, Steamboat. I watched these guys as a kid. So when my childhood dream of becoming a Kung Fu master didn't work out, I thought of Macho Man giving the top rope elbow drop to Steamboat with the bell. I thought 'that's the shit for me!'"</span> We both laughed. His eyes lit up whenever he talked about wrestling - even aged 40, the passion was still burning brightly within. I liked that. <span class="othertext">"Is that how you got into wrestling?"</span> I asked. <span class="bluetext">"Kind of. I did amateur wrestling at Morgan State University, along with football, pole vaulting, I even was a male cheerleader one year."</span> I tried not to laugh. He didn't notice, thankfully. <span class="bluetext">"I was approached by Jeremy McCulough, who knew that I loved pro wrestling. He offered to train me if I gave his son some extra training in amateur wrestling. Next thing I know it's May 2000 and I'm in a ring against Saxxon the Cutthroat. Christ I was so nervous that day, but it was such a buzz, you know? That electric feeling. All the emotions at once. Nervous, scared, nervous, tired, nervous, pinned, nervous, hungry, sleepy. I loved the rollercoaster ride of it all. I lost that feeling for a long time in my career. But thanks to RTG, it's back baby!"</span> I couldn't help but smile. Seeing this kind of enthusiasm rekindled in people is the main perk of the job - and a total contrast to the heart attack I felt like I was having last time around.</p><p class="blacktext"><span class="othertext">"What made you lose the buzz?"</span> I asked with genuine interest. <span class="bluetext">"My proudest moment was when I became the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion. Knowing the heritage of the title, I was very honored. It's not like a small promotion in one state, this was an actual world title that I defended with pride. It was such a thrill. It got my profile big enough to attract the big boys too. I was happy when TNA let me know that I was going to do a dark match. I was then contacted by them a month later at an NWA convention show to do a PPV match. Now that was awesome. I really appreciate AJ Styles showing me a lot. Elix Skipper and David Young were always cool with me. But working with all the ridiculous TV constraints, all the crap that goes with wrestling to a TV production, just killed the vibe for me. AJ gave me two great matches under 3 minutes. I would love to have a full match with him one day that is not constrained by TV time. My TV role never gave me time to develop a character - I became known as 'Mr 630' because the 630 Splash was about the only move they'd give me time to do. Then those geeky internet keyboard warrior assholes dubbed me a 'one trick pony' even though they'd seen so little of me - who the hell were they to judge?! How can you review a guy's skills when he spends more time walking to the ring than he does in it? F**k them. They don't care to learn that there is more to a person, then so be it. I'm out there to entertain, if they are not entertained by my work and they don't take the time to understand what I'm doing, then the way I see it, there are plenty other fans that appreciate me. I do my best every time I'm out there. How often have I done the 630? For 1 year, that's all I did. I cut back every year after that because I learned that there is more to wrestling than just flipping to impress everyone. That's one reason I didn't do it for so long. I only do that crazy move here at RTG because I know the fans <i>really</i> appreciate it."</span></p><p class="blacktext">There was an awkward pause while I let Jerrelle chill a little. Every wrestler has pent-up feelings like this, regardless of whether they made it to a big-league promotion like TNA. It's an arc we all go through - the naive excitement at the start, a little glory in the middle, before years of jaded resentment and pains that just won't go away. Yet we keep on doing it - because no matter how much this shitty, life-stealing industry chews us up and spits us out, it's what we were put on this Earth to do. We're performers, so we perform. It's in our blood. And giving guys like Jerrelle Clark a stage to do what they love - even on such a small scale - is satisfying beyond words. I slugged down the last of my Budweiser before giving him a hearty pat on the back. <span class="othertext">"Come on, let's ditch this place. His broken fingers were still heavily bandaged from his bone-crunching encounters with Collyer. Being in the ring injured against sadistic bastards like him and Frazier is a nightmare waiting to happen. Daniels looked petrified.</p> <p>For the most part, this match played out like a regular tag match, with the F.U exchanging quick tags. Daniels would run in, hit some lightning fast aerial offence, before running away scared and tagging in Stryker. The F.U leader, who has the heart of a lion, wasn't afraid to mix it up with either of his opponents, hitting quick technical strikes and takedowns, before bringing Daniels back into the picture. This tactic successfully contained the threat of Collyer and Frazier for a long while, but never hurt them or seemed to promise victory. After about 8 or 9 minutes, Frazier became visibly frustrated. He went under the ring, found a baseball bat, tagged himself in, then smashed Daniels right in the face with it! As Jerome lay writhing in pain, holding his face, Frazier stretched out Daniels' arm... <strong>and cracked the baseball bat across the injured limb... again... and again... and again.</strong> Jerome screamed in agony with every blow. Collyer and Frazier laughed sadistically, enjoying their work. Stryker ran in to help his wounded comrade, but Collyer intercepted with a huge Clothesline, before putting Matt in a Camel Clutch position. He held Stryker in position within the hold, forcing him to watch from close-range as Frazier destroyed Daniels.</p> <p><b>QT Marshall</b> ran to the ring to try to help, but quickly tasted Frazier's baseball bat also, landing in a heap on the concrete floor at ringside. With Jerome now just a quivering, screaming mess, clutching desperately in agony at his arm, the sadistic pair turned their focus on to Stryker. Collyer held him down as Frazier brought the baseball bat down across the back of his skull. With one clean, sickening strike, Stryker was out cold. But Marshall would not be put down, he would not be defeated. With vengeance on his mind and the fate of the Fighter's Union possibly resting on his shoulders, he fought like a man possessed. He never gave up. Slowly he fought his was back into the bout, turning this into a beautifully technical encounter. <strong>It was two supreme technicians at work, and it was glorious.</strong></p> <p>As the match wore on, fatigue set in on Collyer, who was wrestling for the second time in succession. The fans loved it. Stryker regained consciousness at this stage, running to the apron to assault Collyer, but was intercepted by referee Bill Clark. This distracted Collyer long enough for Marshall to capture Collyer in a brutal-looking Chicken Wing submission. Most thought that was the end, that Marshall had upset the odds and conjured an unlikely victory, but Chad somehow made it to the ropes. <strong>This made Collyer mad.</strong> He got that spiteful, venomous look on his face again. Suddenly what was once an even, 50/50 match became a one-sided beating. If QT's concussion had been bad before the match, it was a thousand times worse by the time Collyer was done with him. He nodded to his new partner Derek Frazier, who was watching from ringside. Frazier grabbed an empty chair from the stands and slid it into the ring, before leaping over the ropes, and performing a devastating Leaping Tornado DDT, smashing Marshall's skull into the steel. The cheers instantly turned to boos. Collyer's face was lit with a sick, sadistic smile as he opened the chair and wrapped it around Marshall's arm. As Chad held Marshall still, Frazier ascended the top rope. <strong>Matt Stryker, Father Augustini and half a dozen security guards ran to the ring, but they were too late</strong>. It took a while for things to calm down after the carnage that had taken place. I seized the opportunity to make a statement. I'd been suspended from RTG for ages now, and it was time for the madness to end. How dare they suspend the first ever RTG Tournament Of Kings winner? A little matter of assault should surely be overlooked for the only RTG Trophy holder in history! Perhaps my timing wasn't great. Perhaps getting in the face of Father Milo just moments after the whole Collyer / Frazier / Daniels / Marshall slaughter was pretty bad timing. Perhaps he wasn't in the mood for me to talk some sense into him. No matter how delicately I tried to explain to him that he was an asshole, he just wouldn't listen. Speculation had been rife as to who he'd choose as his partner for tonight. For months Draven's been paranoid because of the mind games of Tom Carter and Josh Daniels, who both have #1 Contender spots. Carter in particular has been a thorn in Draven's side, thanks to his ability to cash in his title shot whenever he pleases. If Draven was victorious tonight he'd take back control, winning the right to choose when and where he faces Daniels and Carter. But if he loses, they get to choose the stipulation. High stakes indeed, which made the choice of tag partner all the more vital. A hush filled the venue as Draven pointed to the entrance ramp. <strong>This hush immediately turned to boos as RTG's newest villain Johnny Riggs came strutting cockily to the ring.</strong> Now the fans were booing both men, and Draven didn't like it one bit. He seemed shocked and appalled that his fans would jeer at him like this. There was no time for reflection, however, as Daniels and Carter jumped Riggs and Draven, pelting them with punches and kicks.</p><p class="blacktext">Everyone knows that Carter and Daniels, who used to be friends, now hate each other. But it seemed they'd agreed to put their differences aside for one night. And for a while it worked - it was like watching the team that dominated the indies for so many years back in action. They pressured the RTG Champions with stiff strikes and brutal submissions, simultaneously targeting the legs of both of their high-flying opponents. <strong>Their chemistry was precise, their timing was lethal - it was like clockwork in motion.</strong> Riggs and Draven had no answer - Riggs was too busy watching his back for Extreme Tiger and Derek Frazier to properly focus on this bout - and indeed Frazier <i>did</i> make a brief appearance ringside, scaring the crap out of Riggs before security dragged him away. Draven was obviously upset by the unexpected backlash he'd received from his fans, and was psychologically out of the game. It looked like it would be Daniels and Carter's night... until Carter missed a Missile Dropkick, hitting Daniels instead of Draven. Instantly the cease-fire was off, and the friends-turned-enemies began fighting each other. Daniels got the upper hand, using a huge Back Body Drop to torpedo Carter out of the ring, head-first into the metal guardrail. He was out cold!</p><p class="blacktext">Josh celebrated, his arms raised in victory. He turned back to the action and was in for a surprise - Riggs and Draven were up on their feet, and they were <em>pissed</em>. What followed was a particularly one-sided ass-kicking, as the champions used their numerical advantage to cut Daniels to ribbons. It was like two pitbulls mauling a chew-toy. Both high-flyers took their sweet time in taking Daniels apart, using the opportunity to show off some beautiful aerial maneuvers. <strong>Tom Carter regained his senses, but decided to watch his former pal getting his butt kicked, rather than help.</strong> He had a great time, and was laughing his ass off as the champions hit a huge Tidal Wave double-team. Daniels was so badly stunned that Johnny and Aaron had time to play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide who'd make the final pin. It was Draven. Then it was over. A night for celebration for one very popular champion, and one extremely unpopular one. But everyone knew things may well have been different had Carter and Daniels not imploded. </p> </div></td></tr><tr><td colspan="7"><div align="center" class="footertext"><b>In an exceptional match, Aaron Draven and Johnny Riggs defeated Josh Daniels and Tommy Carter in 15:24 when Aaron Draven defeated Josh Daniels by pinfall with an Omegadeath. They see me downing beers with Jerrelle Clark, or they see me shooting pool with Tommy Kim, and they wonder why me and the RTG World Champion don't hang out. There's even the occasional whisper about arguments or backstage disagreements. I read online recently about rumors that me and him had a massive pre-show bust-up, which was obviously bullshit. <strong>The honest truth is I just don't have the energy for that hyper, pocket-sized little bastard.</strong> I do match write-ups for our online thing where I compare him to a 'Duracell bunny on crack' - that's not me being a smart-ass, that's really what he's like. He's like Red Bull personified - he's ok in small doses, but too much will make your head spin. He's not a bad guy at all. He's popular backstage. He does great with the fans. It's just that he's constantly 'on'. 24/7, 365 days a year, he is constantly in character. He lives the gimmick. Remember how Extreme Tiger never takes his mask off in public so he can stay in character? Draven's like that too, but louder and hyperactive. He lives, breathes, eats, sleeps and shits the 'Omega' gimmick. <strong>He <em>IS</em> the gimmick</strong>. And my fried, skinny, former-junkie brain frankly just can't handle that shit. 5 minutes with the guy is like a thousand shots of espresso, all at once. His description of himself on <strong><a href="<a href="https://twitter.com/aarondraven" rel="external nofollow">https://twitter.com/aarondraven"</a> target="_blank" class="blacktext">his Twitter profile</a></strong> is 'Donkey brains in a stallion body' - and he wrote that without sarcasm.</p><p class="blacktext"><strong>There's only so long you can avoid a guy though.</strong> I'd done my best to weasel out of a sit-down meeting with him, but that crafty son of a bitch cornered me in my new favorite place of business, the Hustler Bar. I was playing pool with a local biker called Medium Sized Tony, lining up a tricky corner shot on the 8-ball. Suddenly the Hobbit-sized goon crept up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder. He scared the living crap out of me, ruined my shot, and cost me the game. Tony was laughing his ass off as I had to hand him $10 out my wallet. Don't laugh, $10 is a fortune to a reformed crack-addict like me. $10 is more than I've spent on clothes in the last 5 years. Draven didn't care, he was too busy laughing like a chimp. We found a quiet table and talked over a couple of Miller Lites. <span class="bluetext">"Yo, Garrison. I know you got those emails I hit you up with last week about me bringing back my old nickname, 'The Daredevil Underdog'. You feelin' it?"</span> Yes, that's really how he talks to people in real life, just like he does in the ring. Every word felt like someone was rubbing Tabasco Sauce into my eyeballs. </p><p class="blacktext"><span class="othertext">"The answer's no. For two reasons. First, you're the World Champion, which makes you anything but an underdog. Second, it makes you sound like the food they sell here. I'd order a Daredevil Under Dog and ask for extra mustard."</span> This upset the self-proclaimed 'Omega' but he was wise enough not to throw a pissy-fit. <span class="bluetext">"But it describes me perfectly. It fits me as snug as that shiny World Title. 'The Ultimate Underdog'. What I lack in height I make up in heart. I call myself 'Omega' because I lay it all on the line, and with the risks I take, every match could be the end... my last match. A daredevil willing to put my body, and life, on the line to entertain the people and succeed..."</span> He went on like this for about another five minutes. I zoned out until the noise stopped, staring out the window at two pigeons screwing on top of the local Starbucks. I wasn't sure what to say next, so I just nodded. That seemed to work, though I'd no idea what the hell I'd just agreed to. <span class="bluetext">"Lots of tanning. Lots of gym time. Lots of body shaving. I haven't been able to keep up my usual pace. But I try and hit the gym seven nights a week. I spend 10-12 hours a day in the gym. Almost as much time in the tanning bed and shaving too. I need a body like an 'Omega' because I'm gonna be the end all, be all of the business."</span> I nodded again as the pieces of the puzzle fell in to place. He was moving up a weight class, putting on some more muscle mass. I think that's what he was talking about, anyhow. <span class="othertext">"So long as you look good out there. I saw a photo from your Rampage Wrestling days and you had the physique of a heavily pregnant teenage girl. The way you look in the ring now is a big improvement. So long as you keep lighting up the ring and keep the fans chanting your name, we're cool."</span> I was now speaking his language. Or something close to it, anyway. I changed the subject, trying to take control of the conversation.</p><p class="blacktext"><span class="othertext">"How did it feel the other day to hear the fans booing you? Must've felt weird after all this time as a top babyface?"</span> I asked, while preparing myself mentally for the barrage of partly-chewed hyperbole that was about to hit me like a sledgehammer. <span class="bluetext">"It was a bad ride, for sure. Those clowns were dissing me big time, and a supreme athlete like yours truly shouldn't have to hear that. Fortunately I got to kick the boss in the balls later in the show. Those bitches got back in line and back on the Omega-Train after that. Johnny Riggs has some serious heel heat at the moment though. That shit's <em>spicy!</em>"</span> I nodded again, trying to unscramble his words in my mind. <span class="othertext">"It can't be the first time you've gotten some heel heat on you though? You've been wrestling since 2004? Didn't you heel for Prime Wrestling Rampage and New Era Pro Wrestling back in the day? You're still the top face here, but crazy fans like ours aren't always gonna love you, no matter what you do."</span></p><p class="blacktext"><span class="bluetext">"I started off as a heel, because a lot of fans can't process the amount of individual greatness I bring to the table. I got the moves. I got the looks. Some dweebs just get jealous, and when people are jealous, people boo. It's only really in RTG that I've gotten to be a <em>real</em> face and get the respect from the fans that I'm due. But if they wanna boo me instead, they can all line up and kiss my ass. I've been lucky enough to be put in the ring with some huge names. Kevin Nash, Sean 'X-Pac' Waltman, Too Cold Scorpio, Jay Lethal, Necro Butcher, Homicide. Wrestling Jerry Lynn was great and an honor. Plus guys like Matt Cross, Johnny Gargano, Josh Prohibition... I know I'm good, I don't need their bullshit approval. I love this business, man. I love this company. I love wrestling. Whether the fans love the Omega or not is just frosting on the cake."</span> We paused while another round of beers landed on our table. Cut through the ridiculous attitude and underneath I guess you've got a dedicated wrestler. He obviously loves his craft. Maybe he was slowly winning me over. As more and more beer went down his throat, the gimmick gradually begin to slip. The words coming out of his mouth slowly became more and more normal. For the first time in well over a year, I was finally getting to see something like the real Aaron Draven, not the ridiculous caricature he constantly paraded around as in public. </p><p class="blacktext"><span class="bluetext">"Being the RTG Champ is a great achievement for me. Up there with when I got to team with Nash. I've worked with and been on tons of shows with plenty of big name stars before. But none were at his level. I was a huge Diesel fan as a kid too. Truth be told I went dressed as him for Halloween in 4th grade. To go from that, a kid looking up to an idol, to be a man standing next to that idol being given the chance to be seen at the same level as he is was amazing. Sure I don't have the massive size advantage like he does, and I know I ain't never gonna get accepted by the big-leagues like WWE because of my height. Their loss. That's why places like Road To Glory Wrestling are vital, because that's where the real talent is. Forget the glitzy crap, this is the real deal."</span> I talked about my own run-ins with the 'big boys' like my flirtations with ECW while training under Shane Douglas, then the stint in XPW, my extremely brief time with TNA, and my run-ins on the undercard with WWE and the likes of Shawn Michaels. In some ways my story was not so far from his. He seemed fascinated, shutting up for the first time since forever. Whether he meant to let his guard down like this or not, it was the first time we'd ever come even close to connecting.</p><p class="bluetext">"My all time favorite and dream opponent is Shawn Michaels. The best wrestler of all time. He was different to the rest of those clowns. I think WWE guys get in a routine with so many shows and stuff. They're all there at the big dance. So the hunger for a lot of them is gone. Independent wrestling, especially RTG, is all guys going out and doing their best to get noticed. No one is in a routine, no one has lost their hunger. It makes for a more exciting atmosphere. WWE is what people think of when they think of wrestling in America. And you can't deny the success of their formula. It draws in millions of people and millions of dollars. The biggest negative is lately they are less character driven. A lot of the guys don't have defined characters. Most have bland names. But I see RTG and I see great characters and great stories. And that's what wrestling is all about." <span class="blacktext">Maybe it was the beer, but I was coming round to this guy. Maybe he isn't so bad after all.</span> <span class="othertext">"So you're happy here in RTG? You're set to stay a while longer? Because there's big things planned for you in the near future."</span><span class="blacktext"> I said, smiling. It wasn't bullshit either - he was doing a pretty good job as champion, and was gaining overness nicely since we put the strap on him. I was now using this meeting as a way of testing the waters, so to speak, to ensure he was someone we could hang with. </span></p><p class="blacktext">I liked his answer: <span class="bluetext">"My all time favorite was a match that happened for Dragongate USA. It wasn't the match I had on their show, it was the tryout match I had with Vance Desmond before the show. 50 guys show up trying out. Former WWE developmental guys. Guys with indy name exposure. Me and Vance get three minutes to tell a story, and wow the locker room and management at the same time. We pieced together a match that got the boys popping for us and cheering, something they hadn't done for any of the tryout matches that night. Hard to explain. But we were in a situation with a lot of pressure and we fed off the pressure instead of being nervous. It was a great feeling. For the longest time I thought either that or my time with Nash would be the highlights of my career. I thought I'd peaked. But here at RTG there's all sorts of possibilities. I'm busting my ass and finally getting recognized. The future looks bright, and I can't help but feel like the very best things in my career are gonna come soon, here at Road To Glory."</span> I raised my beer to him. <span class="othertext">"Cheers!"</span> </p><p class="blacktext"><br></p></div></td></tr><tr><td colspan="7" align="center"><div align="center"><table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="10"> <tbody><tr> <td width="60%" align="center" valign="middle"><p><span class="headertext">Thanks to all who voted on my little survey. <p>All good things come to an end, sadly.</p><p> </p><p>

I haven't been here for a very long time, despite having enormous fun with this dynasty. Thank you to all who read this each time and posted their predictions.</p><p> </p><p>

Had to stop though. Turns out making a TEW diary during work hours is a good way to almost get yourself fired. That put an end to it right there and then.</p><p> </p><p>

Was huge fun while it lasted though, so thanks once again to you all, you wonderful people who came along for the ride.</p>

Thanks to all for the kind words. Didn't get fired, but cut the diary stuff out immediately after some very strong warnings. To be fair, the dynasty was becoming a bit of an addiction.

I had a couple more months done with some fun twists, which I think I will summarise at some point soon. I think that could be a nice end to this.
