[WCW, 1991] Riding Out The Storms

Background Information

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to read this first post in this brand new diary. This diary will be focused on WCW in the year 1991. This begins around two weeks after Starrcade 1990 where the Black Scorpion was revealed as 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair. Due to this whole debacle, Ole Anderson was removed as the Head Booker of WCW and Jim Herd was removed as the Executive Vice President. Herd has been moved to another division within TBS and WCW went looking for a new head booker. They wanted someone who was not a wrestling guy to help run things. That is where the new Head Booker and Executive Vice President came from. Enter the former AWA announcer and former salesman, Eric Bischoff. He has a little bit of wrestling experience but is not truly a wrestling guy. Ted Turner and his group hope that this will make him a great asset to World Championship Wrestling.

For those wondering, I do still have my USPW diary. That diary is located here: USPW: Staying At Number One It is on a brief hiatus as writing a Royal Rumble style match takes some time and I really have to be in the mood for writing that style of match. But that diary is definitely still lingering around. I have no plans to restart it or anything. When I get into my USPW mood, I will have that match popped out, I'm sure.

Thank you to those who are reading and I hope you enjoy my next step forward riding out the storms...

OOC: Just a couple of quick notes. I have removed Worldwide and kept the WCW Power Hour as the B-Show for World Championship Wrestling. Also, the Power Hour will not have the same type of write-ups as WCW Saturday Night. It will be a short write-up as shown here. It will, also, not be part of any prediction contests. I hope everyone enjoys!

===

WCW POWER HOUR! (B-Show)

Friday Week 1 January 1991

Location: Columbus Municipal Auditorium (South East)

Attendance: 3,781

Overall Rating: C+

TV Rating: .27

-In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and little heat, Owen Hart(C-) defeated Rip Rogers(D) in 5:55 by pinfall with a Missile Dropkick...C-

-We move from the ring to the Wrestling News Network hosted by Gordon Solie. Solie talks about the York Foundation and their arrival here in WCW. He sends it to an interview with Alexandra York. York states that she has a brand new member of The York Foundation to announce. That newest member of The York Foundation is none other than Terrence Taylor. Taylor steps into view of the camera, moving beside Alexandra York. He calls himself The Taylor Made Man and he says that 1991 is going to be a banner year for The York Foundation.

-In a terrible match, The Master Blasters(S-D-, B-E+) defeated The Italian Stallion(D) and Pez Whatley(E) in 5:45 when Master Blaster Steel defeated The Italian Stallion by pinfall with a Big Boot...D-

-Gordon Solie is back in the Wrestling News Network. He announces that the Clash of the Champions will be here later this month on TBS. It will include men like Sting defending the NWA World Heavyweight title against an as-of-yet unnamed opponent. It will also feature Lex Luger defending the NWA United States title against Sid Vicious. But back to the World title picture, he sends things to an interview with 'The Nature Boy' Buddy Landel. Landel says that he is tired of sitting on the sidelines. He wants to be in action on WCW Saturday Night. He challenges the World Champion, Sting, to meet him in the ring. He says that when they face each other, he will prove that he is the best Nature Boy in WCW.

-In a decent match, Ricky Morton© defeated Bobby Eaton(C+) in 5:42 when Bobby Eaton was disqualified when Michael Hayes ran in and attacked Ricky Morton...B-

-Following the contest, The Fabulous Freebirds assault Ricky Morton. They bring him to the mat with a double vertical suplex. Then they go for the Double DDT but out from the back comes Tommy Rich! Wildfire clears the ring following some well-timed punches. The announcers let everyone know that we will have a Starrcade rematch this Saturday night on WCW Saturday Night when The Fabulous Freebirds take on Ricky Morton and Tommy Rich. The winning team will face Doom for the NWA World Tag Team titles at the Clash of the Champions.

-The announcers put over the fact that we'll be seeing Ric Flair take on Scott Steiner this Saturday night on WCW Saturday Night.

-In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, The Steiner Brothers(R-B-, S-B-) defeated Big Cat(D) and Motor City Madman(D-) in 9:34 when Scott Steiner defeated Motor City Madman by pinfall with a Steinerizer. The Steiner Brothers make defence number 5 of their NWA United States Tag Team titles...C+

-Following the victory, The Steiner Brothers celebrate in the ring with their NWA United States Tag Team titles. As they are celebrating, The York Foundation hits the ring. They assault The Steiner Brothers from behind with Michael Wallstreet catching Scott Steiner with a Stock Market Crash. On the other side of the ring, Terrence Taylor hits Rick Steiner with the Five-Arm, now known as The Taylor Made Forearm. Alexandra York picks up the belts and hands them over to The York Foundation members. They raise the titles as the crowd boos loudly. The announcers welcome us to watch WCW Saturday Night tomorrow night where Scott Steiner will step in singles action to take on Ric Flair. We'll see you then!

Glad to see you take up a 91 diary. Will definitely be following.

Prediction Listing

Non-Title Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Bobby Eaton vs. Lex Luger

Comments: This is easy to predict for most, but really in 1991 Eaton is still a really good worker and an important part of the card. Hopefully he looks strong in defeat.

#1 Contenders Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich

Comments: Tommy Rich lasted longer than he should have. Same for the Freebirds, but at least they have some value.

10 Minute Time Limit Match

Terrence Taylor vs. Keith Hart

Comments: Not really, no. :)

10 Minute Time Limit Match

Sid Vicious vs. Junkyard Dog

Comments: JYD is a favorite of mine, but this is what he's good for now. Quick jobs to make stars look better.

Non-Title Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Buddy Landel vs. Sting

Comments: Stinger Splash!

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Ric Flair vs. Scott Steiner

Comments: Should be a good matchup. Scott Steiner could even have a "future is now" type run if you want to give it to him, but this early? Probably not.

Three of the four men are dressed in custom made suits, while Sid Vicious is dressed in his wrestling trunks. The difference between Vicious and the rest of the group is rather obvious. Ric Flair grabs the microphone and says that he heard there's a party going down in Landover tonight. But it's too bad for the fans that The Horsemen don't party in nothing towns like Landover. He says that when tonight's show ends, the Horsemen are going to get into their limousine, drive to the airport, climb into their exclusive Learjet and get out of this town as quickly as possible. But, before they leave tonight, the Horsemen are going to show this city what greatness is all about. Whooo! That greatness is going to take Scott Steiner to school tonight because he needs to remember that to be the man, you have to beat the man and Ric Flair is always the man. Whooo! Ric Flair says that he is the man that wears custom made clothes and lives in a big house on the big side of town. Scott Steiner is stepping in the path of the greatest wrestler of all time. Whooo! Arn Anderson steps forward and undoes his suit jacket, revealing the NWA World Television title belt around his waist. The announcers are surprised, as that belt belongs to the Z-Man. Anderson says that he is the true NWA World Television Champion. He says that he earned the belt earlier today. The Horsemen's vehicle turns into the gas station and all four men plus the cameraman get out and go inside the mini mart. Z-Man is grabbing a Gatorade when he is struck from behind by Sid Vicious! Vicious rams Z-Man into the fridge section from which he just grabbed the Gatorade. Drinks spill all over the floor. Then Vicious shoves Z-Man right toward Arn Anderson -- Double A Spinebuster! He hit a Spinebuster on that hard floor! Z-Man cries out in pain and all four members of the Horsemen take turns putting the boots to Z-Man! Screams inside the mini mart can be heard as people rush away from the fight. Sid Vicious grabs Z-Man and tucks him between his legs -- Power Bomb! The Z-Man was power bombed on the hard floor! Z-Man is unconscious! Double A smiles and grabs the World Television title that fell during the attack. Anderson tells Z-Man that this is why you never mess with a Horseman. He, also, warns that he'd like someone to try and take the belt from him. They will suffer the same fate as the Z-Man. Barry Windham steps forward and says that tonight, he, the NWA World Television Champion Arn Anderson and Sid Vicious will all be here to watch the back of Ric Flair against Scott Steiner. Sid Vicious remains the quiet muscle in the background as Ric Flair steps forward again and says that tonight he's going to walk that aisle and style and profile. Eaton does a lot of selling in this contest, making Luger look like a million bucks when Luger is in control. However, Eaton does have some control in this bout, bringing Luger to the mat with a swinging neckbreaker that scores a two count. Eaton maintains control with a few restholds, like a rear chinlock and a sleeper but Luger refuses to submit or be knocked out. Around the eight minute mark, Eaton brings Luger down with a vertical suplex and then heads to the top turnbuckle. Eaton stands on the top turnbuckle, measuring the Total Package. He goes for the Alabama Jam but Luger raises a leg, catching Eaton on the jaw with the boot. Eaton staggers backward, catching himself in a corner just to keep on his feet. The crowd is solidly behind The Total Package as he begins his comeback. He strikes Eaton with several clotheslines in a row and then shows his power with a press slam on Beautiful Bobby. The next bout features The Fabulous Freebirds against Ricky Morton and Tommy Rich in a rematch from Starrcade 1990 where Morton and Rich picked up the victory. This contest has a whole lot more riding on it as the winning team will face Doom at the Clash of the Champions: Dixie Dynamite for the NWA World Tag Team titles. This match is definitely affected by some hard drugs taken by Tommy Rich and a drunk Jimmy Garvin. It is so obvious at one point because Garvin dropped off the apron and began chatting with some female in the front row. With that said, the majority of the match features Ricky Morton and Michael Hayes in the ring to cover up for their partners. Five minutes into the match, Hayes catches Morton with a bulldog and makes the cover, scoring only a two count because Morton gets his foot on the bottom rope. Tommy Rich and Jimmy Garvin both stumble into the ring and throw a few punches to each other before they both tumble out to the ringside mats. This definitely distracts Michael Hayes and allows Ricky Morton to get back into the contest. Morton lifts Hayes and brings him down with a body slam and then a splash off the ropes to score a two count. Morton waits for Hayes to reach his feet and then hits Hayes with a dropkick. Ricky Morton heads to the top turnbuckle -- Diving Cross Body! Morton hooks the leg: One, Two, Three! At ringside, Alexandra York is constantly typing information into her laptop during this contest. She has to make sure that the computer is updated with up-to-date information. Though the match was a well-executed squash match, it did have little heat as Taylor dominated throughout the contest. Taylor catches Hart with a neckbreaker early in the bout, scoring a two count but Hart shows that he has a lot of heart in kicking out. The only brief momentum that Hart has is when he reverses a rear chinlock into a jawbreaker. He sends Taylor to the ropes and ducks his head but Taylor comes over with a sunset flip for a two count. Quickly, Taylor hooks Hart in a Boston Crab, sitting back in it but Hart refuses to submit. Hart shakes his head, trying to drag them to the ropes. Taylor shows his smarts when he stands up slightly and moves the Boston Crab back to the center of the ring. After having the hold on for about a minute, Taylor releases and puts a few boots to Hart. Taylor picks up Hart and smashes him head-first into the top turnbuckle before lifting him up and bringing him down with a body slam. Taylor shows his wrestling skill when he brings Hart over with a double underhook suplex. Arn Anderson no longer has the NWA World Television title belt so the announcers speculate that he has returned it to the Championship Committee to avoid a suspension. With the Horsemen at ringside, Rick Steiner walks down to stand in his brother's corner. It might not even the odds but it makes for better odds for Scott Steiner. Inside the ring, Flair continues to focus on the knee of Steiner. He lifts Steiner to his feet and sends him to the ropes. Flair ducks his head down but Steiner stops short. He hooks Flair with the double underhook -- Double Underhook Power Bomb! Steiner makes the cover: One, Two, Foot On The Bottom Rope! Steiner stands up, limping slightly on that hurt right knee. Steiner picks up Flair and Irish whips him into the corner -- Flair flips up and over the turnbuckle, landing on the apron. Flair runs along the apron -- Steiner-Line by Scott Steiner! Flair drops on the apron and Steiner grabs him, pulling him up -- Steiner brings Flair back in the ring with a vertical suplex! Steiner picks up Flair and sends him to the ropes -- Tilt-A-Whirl Slam! The crowd cheers and the nearly 18,000 WCW fans are on their feet! Steiner makes a signal for the Frankensteiner! It looks like he's going to try and put Flair away! If he hits this, he will surely win the match, right? But there is a distraction that keeps him from going for the Frankensteiner. Arn Anderson climbs on the apron, drawing the attention of the referee and Scott Steiner. Flair comes over and shoves Steiner into the referee! Referee Nick Patrick is knocked to the mat for a brief moment. Flair grabs Steiner by the arms and turns as Sid Vicious enters the ring. Barry Windham takes out Rick Steiner at ringside with a blind-side clothesline. Rick never saw the attack coming. In the ring, Vicious goes for a clothesline on Scott Steiner but Steiner ducks and Vicious hits Flair instead! Steiner catches Vicious with a Steiner-Line that sends him over the top rope to the floor at ringside. Steiner turns his attention to Flair. He signals for the Frankensteiner for the second time, sending Flair to the ropes but there's one person that he must have forgotten about -- Arn Anderson catches Scott Steiner with a shoulder to the knee before Scott can hit the Frankensteiner. The announcers let everyone know that there's three minutes left in the time limit. Arn Anderson helps Ric Flair to his feet. Flair bounces off the ropes and catches Steiner with a kneedrop across the right knee. Ric Flair struts along the ring before he locks in the Figure Four leglock! Flair uses the ropes to gain some extra leverage! Arn Anderson revives the official and Nick Patrick asks Scott Steiner if he submits. One minute left on the time limit! There is only one minute left! Steiner refuses to give in to the Figure Four! Flair grabs the ropes again, adding extra leverage and with twenty nine seconds left in the time limit, Scott Steiner is forced to submit. It was either that or, perhaps, suffer some permanent damage to his knee with the Clash on the horizon.]</span></em></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 19:31)</strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong> Match Rating: B</strong></span></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42131" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><span>http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW_1991/RicFlair.jpg</span><span>http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW_1991/ArnAnderson.jpg</span><span>http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW_1991/BarryWindham.jpg</span><span>http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW_1991/SidVicious.jpg</span></p><div style="text-align:right;"></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <em><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">[As the bell sounds, </span></em><em><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>The Four Horsemen</strong></span></em><em><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> enter the ring. Ric Flair releases the Figure Four leglock but puts a few boots to Scott Steiner for good measure. Scott Steiner is tossed out of the ring by Sid Vicious, leaving the ring only occupied by these four veteran wrestlers. Rick Steiner manages to pull himself up and help his brother to the back. The crowd mostly boos the four men in the ring, though, there are a few cheers here and there and a few fans raising four fingers. But the crowd is definitely overwhelmingly against the Horsemen. Ric Flair begins strutting across the ring and releases a 'Whooo!' as the Horsemen stand tall in the center of the ring on this WCW Saturday Night. The announcers remind everyone to tune in to WCW Power Hour this Friday night to learn more about the NWA World Television title tournament, including some of the wrestlers who are involved in the tournament. We will, also, have a rare NWA World Title match on the Power Hour this Friday night so make sure you tune in! Will he leave the company when the time comes that he did so in real life? That remains to be seen. I will have to cross that bridge when I get there in the game. Either way, I am hoping to be a major threat to the WWF. I still have enough talent on the roster to compete with Vince and eventually there will be more coming into the company. One thing I am trying to do in particular is to keep my signings to a minimum for a couple of reasons. There is the fact that WCW already has a large roster so I don't have to worry about not having enough wrestlers. The second reason is that in so many games I make a lot of signings and it tends to backfire on me. So I am doing my best to keep the number of signings down as difficult as that may be with all the talent on the independent scene.</span></p>

There will be sixteen wrestlers included in the tournament and it will take place over both the Power Hour and WCW Saturday Night. One of those wrestlers who will be involved in the tournament is a former champion in Arn Anderson. Solie sends it to an interview with </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Arn Anderson</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Anderson begins by saying that when Z-Man put his hands on The Enforcer and scored an upset victory, he put himself in no man's land. He put himself out there on an island with a volcano. Last week that volcano erupted and destroyed the island and the Z-Man with it. Now that should mean that the World Television title should come home to Arn Anderson where it belongs. But the Championship Committee feels like Anderson should go through a tournament to get the title back. Anderson says that it doesn't matter who he has to go through to get the title. It could be Michael Wallstreet. It could be El Gigante. It will be Dustin Rhodes next week here on the Power Hour. Matches on WCW Saturday Night will include Buddy Landel versus El Gigante and Michael Wallstreet versus the returning Robert Gibson. Another wrestler who will be participating in this tournament is Owen Hart. We cut to a promo with </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Owen Hart</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Hart begins by saying there is no doubt that there's going to be a lot of talent in this tournament. There will be men who have stepped up and won title after title. Men like Arn Anderson. Men like Michael Wallstreet. Then, there's Owen Hart. He says that he has not been in this company as long as men like Arn Anderson. So all of his accomplishments will be done in the future, not the past. He talks about the fact that his first opponent in the tournament is a man named Lethal Larry. He has a lethal Heart Punch that can finish off most competitors. But he has to catch his opponent to hit the Heart Punch. He has to set up his opponent and Owen Hart has enough experience not to let himself get set up in that position. He talks about being trained in the dungeon along with several other wrestlers, other family members. He says that he was trained to win. He was bred to be a winner. When he faces Larry in the ring, he is not only going to win but this is going to be the first step that propels him right to the top of World Championship Wrestling. He tells Larry that he'll see him in the ring. Before the interview cuts off, a man walks up to Owen Hart. This man is none other than </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Paul E. Dangerously</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Dangerously introduces himself to Owen Hart and says that he's been watching what Hart can do inside the ring and he says that Hart can have a bright future. But that future depends on what he is willing to do and what he is willing to sacrifice. It depends on who he is willing to associate himself with. That brings Dangerously to his question. He offers Hart a spot in the Dangerous Alliance but says that Hart does not have to answer right now. Dangerously gives Hart a business card and walks away. Backlund stretches Sting out inside the ring just as he did last week on WCW Saturday Night! What is going on with Backlund? Why is he doing this? Wrestling Observer Newsletter

World Championship Wrestling

-WCW Saturday Night will be coming to you from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago Illinois. We are one week closer to the Clash of the Champions, which will be happening on Wednesday of Week 4 in January 1991. What a main event we have for you this evening. It will feature four men who hold titles here in WCW. On one side will be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Sting teaming with the NWA United States Champion Lex Luger against the NWA World Tag Team Champions Doom. Doom definitely has more experience teaming together. Could that propel them to the victory or will Sting and Luger show why they are the top singles wrestlers in the business?

-A semi main event features two members of the Horsemen as Arn Anderson teams with Barry Windham against The Young Pistols. Both of these teams could challenge Doom in the future for the NWA World Tag Team titles. Which side will gain some momentum and a higher ranking in the WCW Power Rankings? Make sure you tune in and find out!

-The WCW World Television title tournament was announced last week on WCW Saturday Night. We have our very first contests in the tournament this week as we will feature two matches in the first round. The first match will feature the largest professional wrestler in the world today, El Gigante, as he takes on 'The Nature Boy' Buddy Landel. Can Landel match the size of El Gigante and move on to the quarterfinals? In our second match of the first round, we will see Michael Wallstreet take on Robert Gibson. This will be Gibson's first match since having his leg injured. Will Michael Wallstreet take advantage of that injury or will the Rock 'N' Roll Express member head to the second round?

-After being attacked last week and on the Power Hour last night, we have heard that Sting will be in the ring to address Bob Backlund. What will Sting have to say about the man who has locked him in a submission hold twice in a row? Will Bob Backlund step in the ring to confront Sting one more time?

-Plus Larry Zbyszko, Junkyard Dog, Dustin Rhodes, The York Foundation and more. Make sure you tune in! BE THERE!

Diary Question:

How would everyone feel if I began using some internet articles in this diary as I have in more modern diaries? I know that the internet and world wide web were in it's infancy, if not non-existent. But I feel like it's a good way to convey some behind the scenes stories. I just don't want to pull my readers out of the story.

===

Lethal Larry died in real life shortly after this period, didn't he? Good that you still have him in this one.

Unfortunately, Lethal Larry passed away in 1993 in the ring with a heart attack(according to Wikipedia). So, hopefully, we have him at least until 1993.
