[WCW, 1991] Riding Out The Storms

NWA United States Title Match

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Lex Luger defends vs. Sid Vicious

Comments: I know the WCW United States has been used as a "#1 contender title" before. First, a "title switch" gets the show off to a strong start, and second, Vicious makes a great monster heel. Can't help but think Luge over here would be better off closer to the ME.

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Big Van Vader vs. Stan Hansen

Comments: Please tell me you have the match where Hansen pops Vader's eye out on hand for this. I don't actually know how to link videos anymore [sadly, the board changed and it really hurt my mojo when my old embed code didn't work.] But seriously, these guys scream and yell some sort of brawly, close quarters, bloody encounter and not "15 minute time limit with decisive finish. By the way, I love time limits.

NWA United States Tag Team Titles Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

The Steiner Brothers defend vs. The York Foundation

Comments: I can't help thinking the Steiners clash with Doom at the next Clash.

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Larry Zbyszko vs. Owen Hart

Comments: Owen's worth pushing in this match, but "The Cruncher" is far more over.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Doom defends vs. Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich

Comments: Let's just say the guys on the right could very well be your main event but likely have some "issues" that will lead to their eventual release. And the guys on the left are really, really, good.

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Ric Flair and Arn Anderson vs. Brian Pillman and El Gigante

Comments: Pillman here to take the fall? Pillman here to take fall. No ideas what should happen with Gigante.

WCW/NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

45 Minute Time Limit Match

Sting defends vs. Bob Backlund

Comments: Okay, okay... I admit it. I love booking and reading the 30/60/90 Ironman Matches. I'd mark out for a Sting/Backland Ultimate Submission match. But, Backland at this point... more of a bridesmaid than a bride?

Comments On Diary In General: I'm liking the pacing and feel. There are only a few "big matches" on the TV Show and really big matches at big events. And by the way, I think it's helped you a lot to "alternate" projects a bit from here and USPW -- I don't really have a #2 right now (no time) but I may need to implement one soon if I want to continue improving my writing.

Looking forward to THE CLASH.

Lex Luger - It feels like you're in the process of writing Sid out. Him leaving the Horsemen is stage one, and him losing this match - likely via a Windham distraction - feels like the next step.

No Contest - Neither man are loyal to WCW, so I can't really see putting either over very hard until they are locked down.

York Foundation - The Steiners are WAY above the US belts, while these are just the kind of title reigns that get smaller teams like the Foundation over and ready for the big straps.

Larry Zbyszko - This feud is definitely going to last until Wrestle War I would imagine, but Larry being the first big member of the Alliance means he should pick up a very dominant win in the here and now.

Doom - Having played with the 91 mod a little bit, Rich is one of my biggest headaches. I'm going to figure he's one of yours as well.

Flair and Anderson - Pillman definitely takes the fall here, as Gigante is nowhere near popular enough to go over here.

Sting - Bob's little run here is fun and all, but this is WCW, not the WWF. I could see him getting his hands on the US or TV title, but not the World.

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Lex Luger defends vs. Sid Vicious

Comments: It will be interesting to see which way Sid is going to now that he was dropped from Horsemen as there´s plenty of options available with not only this match but also because of the TV title tournament. My personal guess is that he loses here (mainly because that would give him more reason to try to get the TV belt) and then clashes with Arn over the TV title when he tries to impress Missy by winning another belt, possibly turning face in the progress.

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Big Van Vader vs. Stan Hansen

Comments: Could go either way but since Vader is the one making a return, I´d assume he´s the one being hyped up here.

NWA United States Tag Team Titles Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

The Steiner Brothers defend vs. The York Foundation

Comments: I actually don´t have much idea on this since neither team haven´t been seen that much so far (and haven´t really clashed against each other´s yet with the exception of one angle) so I go with what roster page tells me and according to roster page, Steiner´s have higher push so I go with them then.

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Larry Zbyszko vs. Owen Hart

Comments: Owen is a great talent but this is still midcard guy versus main eventer so Larry should get the win here unless the plan is to completely job him out.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match

15 Minute Time Limit Match

Doom defends vs. Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich

Comments: I´m bit doubful that you would be willing to put tag belt on Rich after him being on drugs in the first show.

20 Minute Time Limit Match

Ric Flair and Arn Anderson vs. Brian Pillman and El Gigante

Comments: Pillman and Gigante will likely get some good offence in but a win here would be really big surprise and I´m very doubful it would happen.

WCW/NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

45 Minute Time Limit Match

Sting defends vs. Bob Backlund

Comments: I typically go with the champion in any prediction contest and I see no reason not to do so here too, will be intesting to see where this Backlund storyline will eventually lead though as I doubt it would completely end here.

Thank you, KnowYourEnemy. I have heard of the match where Hansen knocks out Vader's eye. I'm not sure if I've seen it, though. I can definitely look it up. Since then it has seemed that Backlund has had Sting's number until this past Saturday night when Sting emptied the ring of the former amateur wrestler. Vicious pulls Luger up and Irish whips him into the corner. Vicious walks over slowly and begins to throw punches to Luger, beating him all the way down to the mat. Vicious leans over and yanks up Luger by the hair. Vicious grabs Luger by the throat but the power of Luger shows as he blocks the Chokeslam attempt. Luger kicks Vicious in the gut three straight times, breaking the hold. Luger catches Vicious with a discus clothesline, knocking Vicious back in a corner. Luger climbs up and begins throwing punches as the fans counts along. Luger drops down and hooks Vicious -- vertical suplex! Luger turns over and makes the cover: One, Two, Kickout! Luger stands up and yanks up Vicious -- belly-to-back suplex. Luger bounces off the ropes -- big splash -- right into the knees of Vicious! Luger drops down and Vicious goes flying over the top rope, landing at ringside. The referee uses his discretion not to call for the disqualification as it was Vicious' own momentum that sent him over the top rope. Luger joins Vicious at ringside, waiting for him to get to his feet. Luger charges Vicious and brings him down on the blue mats with a clothesline. Luger plays it up to the crowd, getting a pat on the back from a fan in the front row. Luger yanks up Vicious and sets him up against the ring post. He charges with a clothesline but Vicious moves and Luger clotheslines the ring post instead. Luger grabs his arm in pain as Vicious grabs him and tosses him inside the ring. Vicious joins him in the ring, bringing him down with a body slam. Vicious stomps on the hurting arm of Luger several times. He maintains control until the fourteen minute mark when a double clothesline sends both of them down. The crowd begins clapping and stomping their feet, trying to give Luger a second wind. It works as both men get to their feet and begin exchanging punches. Luger ducks a Vicious clothesline and brings him down with a body slam. Luger begins calling for the Human Torture Rack. Alexandra York, Michael Wallstreet and Terrence Taylor all walk down. York is carrying her laptop computer and she stands beside Lance Russell. Russell says that tonight the York Foundation has the opportunity to win the United States Tag Team titles by defeating The Steiner Brothers. Russell asks Alexandra York for her thoughts. She says that tonight the York Foundation has their first taste of gold in World Championship Wrestling. She says that she has input all of the information into her computer and they created a foolproof gameplan coming into tonight's match. She states that these two men, the computerized men of the 1990's, will rule the 1990's. That begins with tonight against the Steiner Brothers. York says that the Steiners are a great tag team. But tonight they meet their match in this computer. Vader comes out with his ritual helmet, steam rising from it when he makes the motion. The helmet is left at ringside as Vader gets in the ring going face-to-face with Stan Hansen. The Lariat is not about to back down from anyone. When the bell sounds, the two men go right at it with punches in the middle of the ring. Neither man takes a step back from strikes from the other man. After several blows, Vader shoves Hansen backward and then strikes with a clothesline that floors Hansen. Hansen is up quickly and strikes Vader with a clothesline that rocks him backward. Vader stumbles back in a corner and Hansen rushes in, striking with kicks to the ample gut. Hansen turns Vader and strikes his head into the top turnbuckle. Hansen takes control for several minutes, finally getting Vader down on the mat. He hooks Vader in the move known as the Brazos Valley Backbreaker, known by most fans as the Boston Crab. Hansen leans back but Vader refuses to submit. Vader shows some amazing strength as he drags Hansen over to the ropes using his arms. He grabs the ropes to have the hold broken. When both men get to their feet, they continue to exchange blows, showing the absolute strength of both men. Vader gains an advantage around nine minutes into the contest. He knocks Hansen back in a corner and begins pummeling him with forearm shots. Vader catches Hansen with a release German suplex, knocking Hansen back near the corner. Vader climbs to the second turnbuckle -- Vader Bomb! The corner slingshot splash has Vader landing hard on Hansen. Vader makes the cover, hooking the leg: One, Two, Three! Vader turns back to Hansen and The Lariat fires a punch up from the ground and then a kick with his boots. Hansen grabs the ring apron to pull himself up but Vader runs and catches Hansen with the Vader Attack. Vader grabs Hansen by the head and drags him over where the concrete is exposed. He strikes Hansen with a kick to the gut and then lifts him up -- Release Power Bomb on the concrete floor! Hansen is knocked out for the moment as he lies on the concrete floor. Vader throws up the 'V' sign, standing over Hansen. Who wants to step in the ring with Big Van Vader now? Vader moves along ringside to his helmet and does the ritual, letting steam fire up in front of him. He picks up the helmet as officials and EMTs check on Hansen. The first couple of minutes in the match have all four wrestlers in the ring doing battle. Rick Steiner takes down Terrence Taylor with a Steinerline and Taylor rolls to ringside. This leaves Michael Wallstreet in the ring with both Steiner Brothers. Scott grabs Wallstreet from behind and Rick hits him with a Steinerline, bringing Wallstreet over in a bridging German Suplex. The suplex scores a two count and Wallstreet rolls to ringside to discuss tactics with Alexandra York. Once Michael Wallstreet re-enters the ring, The York Foundation begin to take control. They isolate Scott Steiner in their corner and use quick, frequent tags to keep a fresh man in the ring. Michael Wallstreet eggs Rick Steiner into the ring and the referee steps over to escort The Dog-Faced Gremlin to his corner. Wallstreet takes this time to toss Scott over the top rope, an automatic disqualification usually. Terrence Taylor drops off the apron and grabs Scott, running him head-first into the ring post. Knowing they cannot win the tag titles on a count out, Taylor tosses Scott back inside the ring. Taylor is tagged in and the momentum switches when he goes for a back body drop on Scott. Scott stops and hooks Taylor in a double underhook position -- Twisting Double Underhook Power Bomb. Both men are down on the mat and crawling toward their corners. Taylor manages to tag in Michael Wallstreet but Rick Steiner is tagged in by Scott! Rick catches Wallstreet with several Steinerlines and then barks around the ring, drawing the crowd's attention. Rick heads up to the top turnbuckle but Wallstreet manages to fall on the ropes, crotching Rick. Rick falls into the ring and Scott tags himself in. He drops Wallstreet with a Steinerline and then signals for the Frankensteiner. Terrence Taylor enters the ring, drawing the referee's attention. Scott picks up Wallstreet and sends him to the ropes -- Wallstreet hangs on to the top rope as Scott leaps. Scott lands hard on his back and Alexandra York slides the laptop in to Wallstreet.
Good show man, sorry I've been busy have missed some predictions.

Yeah Tommy Rich was such a slob in some ways. You look at him in the 90s and you find it hard to believe anyone ever considered him a "good looking" guy who got title run based purely on his good looking babyface heat. LOL

WCW POWER HOUR! (B-Show)

Friday Week 4 January 1991

Location: Antelope Gymnasium (South West)

Attendance: 2,000

Overall Rating: C+

TV Rating: .28

-The Power Hour begins with a pre-taped interview featuring Lex Luger. Luger taunts The Skyscrapers, telling them that he is still standing. He survived their two on one assault at Clash of the Champions. He challenges them to meet him on WCW Saturday Night tomorrow night. He says that he will have a mystery partner to team with him and that he will prove that he is better than Vicious or Spivey.

-World Television Title Tournament, Round 1: In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and little heat, Bobby Eaton(C-) defeated Pez Whatley(E+) in 6:01 by pinfall with an Alabama Jam...C-

-Welcome to the Wrestling News Network hosted by Gordon Solie. Solie talks about the end of the first round of the NWA World Television title tournament. He says that there will be one more match in the first round, featuring Brad Armstrong and Moondog Rex. The second round will begin tomorrow on WCW Saturday Night with a match between Ranger Ross and Arn Anderson. Comments are shown by Ranger Ross. Ross says that he is competing in this tournament for pride of the United States. He says that he has respect for the ability of Arn Anderson but he has the pride of America behind him. He says that he will win this tournament.

-In an abysmal match, El Gigante(E-) defeated The Minotaur(E+) in 6:12 by submission with a Clawhold...E+

-We move to a pre-cut promo that features Paul E. Dangerously hyping the Dangerous Alliance and members Larry Zbyszko and Bobby Eaton. Dangerously says that he is very happy to introduce Bobby Eaton as the newest member of the Dangerous Alliance. However, tomorrow night, on WCW Saturday Night, there will be another new member of the Dangerous Alliance. Not only that but he has a major announcement to make on that night. He tells everyone to tune in because the Dangerous Alliance is going to rule the night.

-World Television Title Tournament, Round 1: In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and non-existent crowd heat, Brad Armstrong(D+) defeated Moondog Rex(D-) in 5:46 by pinfall with a Side Russian Legsweep...D+

-The hidden camera backstage is shown once again. This hidden camera shows the large Mastodon that defeated Stan Hansen at the Clash of the Champions, Big Van Vader. Vader is...walking. As he walks, someone else steps into his path. The camera rises up to reveal El Gigante! Gigante looks down on Vader for a long moment. Neither man moves for several moments. Then Gigante steps to the side and Vader continues to walk forward. What an intense stare-down between two of the largest men in wrestling. But who is controlling these hidden cameras?

-In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and little heat, The Steiner Brothers(R-B-, S-C) defeated The Royal Family(J-E+, R-D-) in 9:41 when Scott Steiner defeated Rip Morgan by pinfall with a Steinerizer...C+

-The Steiner Brothers celebrate their victory in the ring. The crowd goes wild for the former United States Tag Team Champions. The announcers remind everyone that there will be a surprise from the Dangerous Alliance and more fall-out from Clash of the Champions this Saturday night on WCW Saturday Night! Make sure you tune in!

Good show man, sorry I've been busy have missed some predictions.

Yeah Tommy Rich was such a slob in some ways. You look at him in the 90s and you find it hard to believe anyone ever considered him a "good looking" guy who got title run based purely on his good looking babyface heat. LOL

Glad you enjoyed the Clash of the Champions show, justtxyank! Congratulations on being inducted into the GDS Hall of Fame. It is definitely deserved.

And I kind of feel bad for Wildfire Tommy Rich. He might have received a push were it not for his issues with being wasted on the show. But that just means that someone else gets his spot at the top.

World Championship Wrestling

-Clash of the Champions is now over and we have returned to the final WCW Saturday Night of January. We will be coming to you taped from the Wildwoods Convention Center in Wildwood, New Jersey. What a show we have for you, which will include the match that was signed following WCW Power Hour. We will see The Skyscrapers in their first tag team match since Starrcade 1990 against Lex Luger and a mystery partner. Rumors have been swirling as to who this mystery partner is. We can only lay out speculation until WCW Saturday Night airs! Make sure you tune in for this match.

-Two matches in the second round of the NWA World Television title tournament will take place on WCW Saturday Night. The first match will feature Michael Wallstreet of The York Foundation taking on El Gigante. Alexandra York has promised that Wallstreet will win this match in less than ten minutes. The second match of the second round will be Arn Anderson taking on Ranger Ross. Ross has promised to win this contest for America and the veterans off at the Gulf War right now. Who will advance to the semifinals? Make sure you tune in!

-We have learned that Sting will open the show, telling everyone his decision when it comes to WrestleWar. Will he give up the NWA World Heavyweight title and participate in War Games? Or will he give up his spot in War Games to defend the NWA World Heavyweight title? There is speculation both ways. But the only way to find out which he will choose is to tune in to WCW Saturday Night in Prime Time!

-Plus Larry Zbyszko, Owen Hart, Bob Backlund, Keith Hart and more. Make sure you tune in! BE THERE!

El Gigante - I lean this direction because Wallstreet just picked up a title. I don't see him picking up two. However, to preserve the gimmick, I'll say it ends with a DQ or count out, as he mourns Rick Steiner coming to the ring and smashing the computer for revenge.

After the match, both men shook hands and Backlund left, allowing Sting to celebrate with the fans. Sting is handed a microphone as he enters the ring and he says that it's been a long time since he has been in New Jersey but he's glad to be here tonight in Wildwood. He says that he was told last Wednesday night that he has a choice to make. In about a month, WCW moves into Wrestlewar, featuring War Games. The War Games match was originally scheduled to be Sting, Flyin' Brian and The Steiner Brothers against The Four Horsemen. We all know that there are not Four Horsemen anymore since they released Sid Vicious. But we all know that they will find a fourth person to join their group. That brings them to the choice that he was given. He can either defend the NWA World Heavyweight title at Wrestlewar or he can wrestle in War Games but he cannot do both. So it is with great sorrow that he announces he will no longer be participating in War Games this year. He offers his apology to Flyin' Brian and The Steiner Brothers. However, he is not leaving them hanging. He says that he has found someone to take his place that he thinks that they will agree with. Wallstreet begins the match trying to use some amateur wrestling techniques to get Gigante on the mat but the much larger athlete maintains his footing and lands a hard chop to the top of Wallstreet's head. Gigante makes a quick cover but Wallstreet puts his foot on the bottom rope to stop the count before it reaches three. Wallstreet rolls out of the ring to confer with Alexandra York and the computer before re-entering the ring. Wallstreet avoids a big boot attempt by Gigante and then chop blocks the knee to bring Gigante down to the mat. Wallstreet bounces off the ropes and brings a leaping elbow down on the chest of Gigante. He makes a cover and a quick kickout by Gigante sends Wallstreet flying across the ring. Gigante gets to a knee when Wallstreet moves in. Wallstreet throws some punches but gets knocked to the mat with a clothesline by Gigante. Gigante calls for the Clawhold but gets distracted when Big Van Vader walks out from the back. Vader stares down El Gigante and the referee, drawing their attention away from Wallstreet. Alexandra York slides the laptop in to Wallstreet. With the referee distracted, he turns Gigante around and strikes him in the gut with the laptop and then breaks the laptop over Gigante's head! The fans are definitely in the corner of Ranger Ross and begin an early USA chant. The ten minute time limit means that this is definitely a fast-paced match with several near-falls in the early going. Ross sends Anderson to the ropes and lowers his head, bringing Anderson up and over with a back body drop. Anderson rolls out of the ring and Ross follows him out there. Ross throws some punches and quickly returns the action inside the ring. Ross takes down Anderson with a headlock takedown. This is quickly reversed into a headscissors by Anderson. Both men get to their feet and Anderson ducks a clothesline. Anderson turns and catches Ross with a spinning spinebuster. Anderson makes a cover and only scores a two count as Ross gets the far shoulder off the mat. Anderson takes control and locks Ross in a hammerlock. He lifts Ross up and body slams him down on the mat with his arm still in a hammerlock. He climbs to the second turnbuckle and drops a double axehandle on Ross. That is the man who Sting will be defending the NWA World Heavyweight title against at WrestleWar. This is the same man who will be making his debut as the newest member of the Dangerous Alliance. This is a man who can and will conquer every single member of the WCW roster. As Dangerously is speaking, a man wearing a mask leaps over the guardrail and enters the ring. This masked man moves over to Sting but Sting sees it coming! Sting fires a punch to the masked man! The masked man fires a punch back! The two men exchange punches until the masked man kicks the hurt knee of Sting, dropping the champion to a knee. Dangerously enters the ring and breaks his cell phone over the skull of Sting! The crowd boos and the masked man grabs Sting -- delayed hangman's neckbreaker that would definitely seem familiar to many fans. Dangerously smiles as he stands beside this masked man. Dangerously introduces the masked man as the mask begins coming off. The opponent for Sting at WrestleWar is none other than...'Ravishing' Rick Rude! Rude swivels his hips over Sting as the show comes to a close. The last vision of the show has Rude standing over Sting and a shocked silent announce crew.]
