<p>WCW Saturday Night</p><p>

Tracy Smothers vs. <strong>Ric Flair </strong>– non-title</p><p>

Ron Simmons, Brian Pillman and Owen Hart vs. <strong>Nikita Koloff, Barry Windham and Dick Slater</strong></p><p>

<strong>Lex Luger </strong>vs. Larry Zbyszko – non-title</p><p>

<strong>The Steiner Brothers</strong> vs. The Diamond Mine (The Diamond Studd and Vinnie Vegas)</p><p>

Junkyard Dog vs. <strong>Steve Austin ©</strong> – WCW Television title</p><p> </p><p>

Notes: Great territorial booking with Smothers -- he's very over in the Southeast but not too many other places -- same with JYD (though he's actually a smidge more over in the Mid-South). </p><p>

More: I'm interested to see how the "heel" express is booked. They always seemed like consummate babyfaces -- especially Morton -- and something will have to be done to make them "bad guys" -- after the feud. Maybe someone could manage them?</p><p>

More: Overall, really liking where the diary is headed. Holding out hope "Big Bill" is the new addition -- he could have a great monster heel run provided he picks his spots.</p>

--Pretty even card on all matches...tough to call some of these. This looks like a big show to set up some PPV bouts and further some story lines. </p><p>

--Feel bad I missed commenting on the Gibson heel turn decision. I just not sure I can buy the RnR Express as heels (I would've voted for Billy Jack). That said, I'm interested to see where you take it.</p><p>

--Excited to see who the new guy for Flair will be. I'm hoping for Bill...but basically anyone but Steamboat.</p>

“Enough is enough! For the last month someone’s been sending me gag gifts and setting me up for ambushes! I’m sick of it, and it may have cost me a chance to take back the World title!</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I’m not an idiot. I had the so-called ‘Black Scorpion’ pulling the same garbage on me last year. I don’t think whoever’s giving me these gifts has my best interests at heart. I do know that I’m ready for anything in these boxes, anything at all!</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“This is WCW, where the big boys play, and if you come here with the aim of making your name, I know full well that you’re eventually going to come after me. Ric Flair couldn’t break me, even by taking the World title from me. Tearing my knee in two didn’t break me, even if I was benched for six months. Fighting Muta, Windham, Vicious, even my friend Lex Luger hasn’t broken me.</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Some weirdo with a UPS volume discount doesn’t seem like a threat to me, not if he has to resort to hiring thugs and roughnecks to come after me instead of facing me, </div></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>mano a mano</em></div></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">. Maybe he’s no threat to me, maybe he’s building up to something, maybe it’s someone who wants me softened up before they come after me – or someone who wants me to prove I’m a worthy opponent before we fight. I don’t know, and I don’t care, because I ran out of patience for this sort of thing around about November of last year!</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Whoever you are, I’m right here. I’m not hard to find – I’m the guy in the neon tights and facepaint! I don’t back down from a fight, never have, never will, and if you’re any sort of man then you’ll meet me in this ring and we’ll settle whatever beef you have with me one on one! Owwww!”</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

JYD could have been the champion of TV – had Black Blood not got involved in his match with Steve Austin ... Austin, for his part, used his ‘successful’ title defence to deliver some more abuse to Tom Zenk ... The Lightning Express are newly arrived in WCW, but have already got into things with the Young Pistols! ... The Steiners against the newly united Diamond Mine was a wild brawl from bell to bell, although DDP’s intervention prevented a clean finish for either side, and led into the Freebirds ambushing the Steiners before they had any chance to recover! Michael Hayes made it clear that the ‘birds wanted a World title shot – and soon! ... Anderson and Zbyszko make for a ferocious duo, as Lex Luger found to his cost ... Norman the Lunatic! He hasn’t been seen in WCW for almost two years, but someone found him and sent him after Sting. Sting wants to know who, and quickly! ... Nikita Koloff looked dominant during his match, but Ric Flair claimed that the Post-Soviet Superstar stood “no chance” of taking his title ... Flair then capped the night with a big victory over the fast-rising Tracy Smothers to emphasise his point!</div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

World Championship Wrestling presents: Saturday Night

Saturday, Week 1, August 1991

Segments of the Night

Backstage, and the Young Pistols approached the Lightning Express.

S Armstrong:
What was that?

B Armstrong:
What was what?

S Armstrong:
Using the ropes – we don’t do that.

Brad shifted in his seat.

B Armstrong:
It wasn’t me. Tim did it.

S Armstrong:
And you’ve told him not to do it again?

Brad shrugged.

S Armstrong:
That’s not what we were taught, Brad.

B Armstrong:
Yeah, well, what we were taught... What has that got me, or got you?

He stood up, and got in his brother’s face.

B Armstrong:
What have you won here? You and Tracey, where’s your gold?

Garvin:
Where indeed?

http://tew2016.com/images/images/Garvin.jpghttp://tew2016.com/images/images/Hayes.jpg

Hayes:
You boys keep squabbling back here. We’re out front, stealing the show every week, adding lustre-

He pantomimed polishing his title belt.

Hayes:
-to these United States tag team titles.

He and Garvin laughed before walking off.

Horner:
Wait. You’re so proud of those titles, put them on the line.

S Armstrong:
Yeah, you said you’re looking to trade up-

B Armstrong:
-you’ll move a lot faster without ten pounds of gold around your waist.

The brothers looked at one another in surprise. Smothers shook his head/

Smothers:
They’re right. You two, us two, them two... Next week, got it?

Hayes and Garvin looked annoyed, but had nowhere to go.

Hayes:
Fine. Maybe we do need to dump the excess baggage... but it won’t be to either of you. We’re going to need a warm-up gig ahead of the big show against the Steiners, so why not?

B Armstrong:
Good. See you-

He glanced at his brother.

B Armstrong:
-and
you
, next week!

As Ric Flair made his entrance for the main event, his music abruptly cut short.

Koloff:
Hey, hey Ric Flair! Behind you, Ric Flair!

Flair turned and frowned at the sight of Nikita Koloff stood in the entrance way, looking immaculate in a tailored suit.

Koloff:
Do you like my suit, Ric Flair? I am getting ready to, what do you Americans say, take my bow as the new World champion. After so long, after so many times when your American politics have stood in my way, I will be
the man!

Flair:
Well, Koloff, here in America...

Flair paused and smiled as the crowd chanted.

Flair:
...we have a little saying, and it goes like this: To be the man, you’ve gotta beat the man! Whoooo!!

Ventura
:
Are you paying attention, Ross?

Ross:
Of course I am, Jesse. You don’t think I disagree with Ric Flair, after all he’s done?

Ventura
:
Ross, with some of the things you come out with, I wonder sometimes.

Flair:
And next Sunday night, Koloff, you will get in the ring with the wheelin’, dealin’, kiss stealin’ Nature Boy, the greatest wrestler on God’s green earth, and if you’re not ready for that, then it’s simple: You’re going down like the Soviet Union!

Koloff chuckled.

Koloff:
Ah, America, so strong, so certain, so behind the times. Ric Flair, Lithuania has abandoned the Soviet Union. We tore the heart out of the Party when we left, and it collapses in our absence. You are looking at the first post-Soviet superstar, and when I return to Vilnius with the WCW World title around my waist, I will have to fight not to become the new President. But I am good at fighting, Ric Flair, and at Clash of the Champions I will become
the
champion, yes, I will beat
The Man
, and take what should have been rightfully mine!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

Barry Windham was less than impressed at Richard Morton’s interference in his match with Robert Gibson ... Tim Horner needed to use the ropes to hold PN News down, which didn’t impress the Young Pistols ... Steve Austin is still on Tom Zenk’s back, here costing him a match against Dan Spivey ... Dustin Rhodes probably wasn’t looking for a match against Mr Hughes next week, but his poppa thinks Dustin needs to stand up for himself! ... The Freebirds followed up their own victory by attacking the Steiners during their match ... Flashing lights and a driving beat interrupted Sting’s mic time, and when things returned to normal he was under attack from the huge Samoan known as Fatu! Weathering the storm, Sting came under assault a second time, but with the arena lights completely out, no-one knows how came after the Stinger! ... Arn Anderson was disqualified for a low blow on Lex Luger in their match, having been forced into fighting to survive against the incredible strength of the Total Package ... Flair and Koloff had some harsh words for one another, and Flair once more proved his talent with a victory over young tyro Owen Hart!

Show rating: B

New booking meeting! As always, PM me your answers/suggestions or leave them in the thread here. I want to make a decision soon-ish, but I'll leave it open for a couple of days at least.

http://tew2016.com/images/images/Dusty.jpghttp://tew2016.com/images/images/Hayes.jpghttp://tew2016.com/images/images/Graham.jpghttp://tew2016.com/images/images/Crockett.jpg

The booking team on... Tom Zenk

“...well, I think that the kid has potential!” Ric barked. He glared across the table at Dusty, who met his eyes with a look of stubbornness that Ric knew mirrored his own.

“The kid has no heart, Ric, and that’s the end of it.”

“I agree with Dusty,” Hayes said, causing Crockett to do a double take. Hayes sat back in his chair, with one foot crossed over the other knee. “I’ve fought Zenk a bunch of times, and mostly what I hear out of him is that we hit too hard, or we don’t do enough to protect him. And it’s not just us,” he said, before Ric could respond. “Luger’s said it, Arn’s said it, even Sting’s had him complaining. Sometimes I think he got lost on the way to the ballet.”

Hayes laughed, and Dusty joined in. Ric’s eyes narrowed.

Any time those two agree, there’s going to be trouble.

“He’s got a great look. He’s athletic. The fans like him... but he keeps dropping big matches. Too many more, and they won’t keep faith with him.”

“So... what? If you’re going to say that Zenk should be pushed to the moon, well, you’re the head booker, Ric. We’ll do what we can with him, but he’s not ready for that.”

“And let me guess, you’d prove that by phoning in a performance against him?” Ric asked. Hayes scowled, and looked ready to fight.

“Uh,” Mike Graham cut in. Hayes and Ric both turned to look at him, and he visibly wilted under their gazes. “He’s... not bad. He’s not ready for the World title, I mean, that’s my opinion, but...”

He paused and looked around the room again, as though searching for support.

He’s almost as old as me, for God’s sake.

Graham swallowed and pushed on. “He still has value. He’s young, he has the potential to improve a lot, with the right guidance. Maybe that could mean a feud against someone like Arn Anderson or Dick Slater, someone who could, well, toughen him up a bit.”

“That could work,” Hayes said, reluctance clear in his voice. “Hell, Slater’d break him or make him.”

“Break him would be favourite,” Dusty muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear.

“We all know how you feel about Tom Zenk, Dusty,” Crockett said. “Really, if it were up to me, you wouldn’t be a part of this meeting.”

Dusty shifted his gaze over to Crockett and looked ready to reply at some volume.

“Dusty’s part of the team, Jim,” Ric said, smoothly. “End of discussion.”

Dusty cast a startled look at Ric, who went on.

“Perhaps the problem is that we’ve not let Zenk show what he can do enough. Maybe he needs to be the senior man in a team. Look at who he’s worked with in the past – Martel in New York, Pillman here... Even though Brian’s younger, he was the lead in that team. Perhaps Tom needs a junior partner to take on and give guidance to – and make himself more visible and professional.”

“Do you have someone in mind?” Dusty asked, suspicion hanging heavy on his words.

“Actually, I do: Dustin.”

Dusty sat back heavily in his chair, knowing that he’d been backed into a corner.

“There’s one other possibility,” Crockett said. “And it may not be right for Zenk at all...”

“Go on, Jim,” Ric said. He’d had his problems with Crockett over the years, and Ted Turner had been the one to insist he was a part of the booking team, but right now he was prepared to bury the hatchet – if in Dusty’s back, so much the better.

“Zenk could turn heel.”

Hayes and Dusty both laughed at the same time, making them do their own double take, which made Graham laugh.

“Zenk’s a pretty boy, he couldn’t play heel if you gave him the Cliff Notes on how to be a bad guy and then told him you slept with his girlfriend and kicked his dog!”

Hayes’ response caused chuckles all around the room, and Ric felt the pressure in the room lessen somewhat.

“Jim, really?” he asked, with a smile. Crockett nodded seriously.

“I’m quite serious. Think about how effective it could be. Zenk has
always
been a good guy, not just a fan favourite, but a genuine favourite of the fans. Having him turn on someone like Pillman or Sting would give him a huge boost, I think.”

“Well... Okay, but what would his motivation be?”

“Success,” Dusty replied before Crockett could speak. He sighed, and waved his hand in Hayes’ direction, as though waving away the look of astonishment on the latter’s face. “The same as anyone. If you’re going to do this, have Slater take him on as a tag partner, or Dangerously-“

“Dangerously’s not a bad idea,” Crockett cut back in. “Or Race. I know he’s not an obvious choice to manage someone like Zenk-“

“He’s way too pretty, for a start,” Hayes interrupted.

“Harley Race has been called a lot of things, but pretty is not one of them,” Crockett continued dryly, drawing laughs from Dusty and Graham. “But having an experienced manager like Race could give Zenk some legitimacy.”

Dusty snorted, but did so fairly quietly.

“Okay, we have some ideas for Zenk going forward,” he went on. “Now, looking ahead to Halloween Havoc...”

You decide! Tom Zenk has caught Ric Flair’s eye, and is in line for a push. Will it be...

...a singles run against a veteran opponent like Arn Anderson or Dick Slater?

...a tag run, shepherding a younger partner like Dustin Rhodes?

...a heel turn, with a veteran partner?

...a heel turn, with a takes-no-prisoners manager?

(Puts on his booking cap)

As much of a prissy whiny lil' bitch as he could be, The Z-Man could be pretty big in WCW.

It may be a long shot; but the kid might have some untapped heel potential we've never seen. Just give 'im a partner like Harley Race and you're halfway there.

Hell, if you wanted to; have him do the unthinkable and make him join the Horsemen. Have him bumping uglies with Sting or Pillman, then; when they need 'em most...Boom.

Wow, these are all interesting choices. My initial inclination was to go for a singles run against Arn, but after reading the commitee's discussion, I'll have to agree with Russelrules44 and choose the heel turn with Harley Race as the manager (Paul E doesn't seem like he would give Zenk the same credibility that Race would at this point).
