I hope this topic isn't too redundant, but...

What sort of universe are you running? (Yes, I did read the "What's going on in YOUR game" thread - and loved it!)

Being quite new to the game (I've only been obsessed with it for 3 weeks or so, lol) I'm quite curious how others are choosing to play. Are you running the default database, Modern Warriors, or some other database perhaps of your own creation? How many weight classes? Just one company? Multiple companies? Single player? Several players? Owner? CEO? Observer? Fights all over the world or only in select countries? How often are your titles being contested? Balance of PPV vs. non-PPV shows? Do you use cans for record and name building? And how are you managing your scheduling? I'm just curious and I want to see what new ideas I can glean from hearing how others are playing.

After fiddling with the default and MW databases for a while, I set out to create my own custom world with a huuuge number of highly skilled fighters where there would be a title fight every weekend and the best fighters would square off against each other on an extremely regular basis. I created a custom database with a set of 13 weight classes. Strawweight through Heavyweight on the male side and Strawweight through Featherweight for the females. Each weight class had 80 fighters initially - 20 world class fighters to actually compete and 60 cans to help inflate records and name values. I introduce one new contender and three new cans to each division every year to help keep it fresh (or save em up and do 5/15 every 5 years). Finding a "Free Picture" database with 2,200+ pics and combining that with the 60,000+ names in the MW database was key in fleshing out such a large custom world.

After an initial 2 year run of non-competitive fights to build names and records, each card now has pretty much the same basic structure. I run 52 cards per year (48 Saturdays and 4 Sundays) so that every contender gets to fight about 4 times per year, barring injuries or long recovery periods (which I've managed to minimize quite thoroughly). I fill each card with fights from just one weight class. There's a title fight at the top, a battle for the #1 contender spot as the co-main, then two semi finals for the next #1 contender battle rounding out the main card. An occasional grudge match or other competitive fight takes the 5th spot at times, then the rest of the card is filled with "contender vs. can" fights.

I figure that might be a peculiar way to go about it, but I'm having tons of fun playing the role of owner and CEO as champions reign and fall, rivalries are born, title lineages develop, and blue chip prospects either rise to the top, settle in the middle, or cling to the back of the pack. I only wish I could take a few weeks off work to crank through a couple decades to see how it shakes out in the long run in terms of title runs, records, and who makes the hall of fame. Damn you Adam for making such an addictive game. ;) Lol. :)

As much as I'm enjoying my current world, I must admit it's tempting to start an additional universe with the default characters just because I got so familiar with the names and histories reading through that "What's going on in YOUR game?" thread. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>I love the C-verse because you get to know the characters after a while. RW just doesn't click with me as I find too many stats I don't agree on (based on my perception on the fights). You also get a common base to discuss them. With your own universe - which is definitely a viable option: it's always different! - you can't really tell your story to the others as they don't know what you're talking about.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm not a big fan of can-fights, but they are the most efficient way of getting to the top. Fighting 4 times a year isn't usually an option unless you adjust everyone's recovery times to 100 using the mass editor.</p>

<p>Haha, yeah, I broke down and wound up creating a default database game last night after getting so familiar with the names from that other thread. The fighter bios and story lines are really well done. I'm thinking most of us probably have multiple databases going at once. I had to go and start an observer game as well. So many games, so little time. Lol.</p><p> </p><p>

I don't like can fights either but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I maxed out the recovery stat, as well as the resillience, recuperation, and preparation stats for everyone to reduce injuries, recovery times, and training times. 4 times a year is definitely a ton... but don't tell that to the current PFP champ who fights 7 or 8 times each year. Lol. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<p>Despite being a RW guy in TEW, I'm leaning more towards C-Verse here, for the same reasons. Dabble in both, but seem to be spending more time with my C-Verse promotion. I suppose it clicks better with wrestlers as even the unknown guys have gimmicks you can relate to, and I'm spoiled by Fleisch's DB bios for almost every worker, where it's not so much the same here, especially for junk fighters if you aren't running the UFC.</p><p> </p><p>

Plus of course stats being somewhat off doesn't matter as much with wrestlers, where it really IS subjective for the most part. Maybe his acting is a bit off, or his matches are a tad too exciting, but in the end it doesn't make a HUGE difference.</p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile, a fighter whose stats are off from how you feel it should be just... really dig at you, as they actually are a competitor in a real sport with real results. It's a bugbear somewhat with all sports manager games, but especially something that's 1 on 1 like MMA (or baseball, but baseball has so many stats to work with that it's less of an issue). That's not to disparage the work done by those who make real world DBs, just saying that differences in perception can cause enjoyability issues far more easily in a results oriented game like WMMA. And it especially becomes apparent with fighters in lesser known promotions with less complete stats available for a mod maker to work with.</p><p> </p><p>

But if everyone is made up characters, none of that actually gets at you, because the way they perform in game is precisely HOW they should perform, because the game is your only baseline. If a guy starts beating the crap out of anything with a pulse every match for ages, he's a monster, not DB broken, because that's his character, if that makes any sense.</p><p> </p><p>

However on the other hand, one of the fun things with the RW DB, especially if you have multimonitors and thus can have all sorts of windows open, is to have the Sherdog website open and every loading screen with those "Fighter Highlights" and while it's processing, look them up, it makes an interesting way to learn all sorts of things about lesser known MMA fighters.</p><p> </p><p>

That said, I use the expanded C-Verse by Computica from the mod subforum, not the default one. For RW I use the latest version of Modern Warrior 5, which is twords the end of the thread IIRC.</p><p> </p><p>

In all cases, RW or Fictional, TEW or WMMA, I do have one quirk. I only use rendered free pictures. I don't know why, but I just HATE free pictures being real people. I suppose it's from my football manager playing, where when dealing with unknown players from lesser teams, picture = real person, CGI = generated rookie, and it's soemthing that's just mentally stuck with me as how it "should" be.</p>

You make some good and interesting points! I am toooootally with you on the pictures. Probably for a similar reason, it drives me nuts to see CPU-generated fighters using pictures of real people. I found a nice database someone created with all the default pics plus the normal free pics, and more, so my Free Pictures area has something like 2,500 unique generated images.
