WCW vs. nWo - The War Begins... Again

The Office of Ted Turner, Atlanta, GA

10th November 1997

"Mr. Turner, trust me on this." Eric Bischoff has all of his usual swagger but still knew better than to call his boss by his first name. One of the richest men in the world sat on the other side of the desk.

http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ted%20Turner_zpszevxttzw.jpg

"You really think this will work? What about that fiasco in January?" Eric had been expecting that very question.

"You're right Mr. Turner absolutely but that was just teething problems now I've had time to fine tune it to prepare it in detail, this time it will not fail."

"It is a lot of money" said the billionaire

"Money we'll make back tens times over!" Eric replied! "Business is booming for us right now based on my idea. Starrcade is going to make us a small fortune, but what Starrcade makes will be nothing compared to this."

Mr. Tuner sat silently for a while.

"It will help us take down McMahon once and for all..."

Eric words hung in the air as Turner remained silent. Then he said the words that would go down in history as a defining moment of professional wrestling.

"Let's do it."

The wrestling world is still in shock from the unbelievable end tothis month's WWF Pay Per View, where Bret Hart appeared to be legitimately screwed out of the WWF championship by Vince McMahon. The WWF is apparently seeking to capitalise on the drama by turning McMahon into an on screen super villain. Many talents in the WWF locker room are reportedly dissatisfied with the way Bret Hart was treated with there being several walkouts.

We've heard rumblings of huge news coming from WCW on the first Nitro of December. Speculation ranges from a Bret Hart debut (unlikely though he is headed there) to some sort of announcement. Of note, one independent wrestler who won't be named said WCW approached him for a "new" project, but he wouldn't give further details when pressed.

It looks as though this is shaping up to be an interesting era in professional wrestling.

OOC: I decided to start a new dynasty as I wasn't really enjoying my previous WCW 1991 one and there are a lot better writers now covering that timeline. I'm using the 2.0 version of the montreal aftermath mod with some minor adjustments (which should be clear as I progress)

I've also decided to do predictions for each show as it's a good way to see if anyone is reading along :)

For once he isn't exaggerating. We cut backstage to the entrance to the backstage earlier with an earlier tonight caption on screen, the calm is broken by wailing police sirens as two motorcycles with police officers accompany a black limousine. The camera pans the length of the impressive car to the back door where a chauffeur holds the door open for the occupant... IT'S Turner president, TED TURNER!!! </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ted%20Turner_zpszevxttzw.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> "What's he doing here?!!" exclaims Tenay. Both men were eager to show why they should get a match against Eddie Guerrero. They had a really back and forth contest with a lot of near falls that got the crowd very excited. The finish came when Malenko countered an Enziguri into a Cloverleaf forcing a submission from Wright. <strong>62</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Eric%20Bischoff_zpsqtcit9bi.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Hall_zpsucyyqimm.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We cut backstage to a worried looking Eric Bischoff and a cool as a cucumber Scott Hall. Eric is freaking out about Turner showing up, Hall could care less. Bischoff points out that Turner could fire them all, he has the power! Hall laughs it off, he says He can't be fired, he has a guaranteed title match because he won World War 3.. Bischoff on the other hand... This sends Eric into a full blown panic and he runs off as Hall guffaws in the background. <strong>72</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Gene%20Okerlund_zpsbljuznh5.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/DDP_zpsaavnkm5p.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We head to Mean Gene Okerlund who introduces us to his guest at this time, Diamond Dallas Page. DDP talks about how he's been with WCW his whole career. He says he will help eliminate the nWo once for and all. He's come close before, but he will take the United States Championship from Curt Hennig and bring it home. "I hope you are watching this match with Konnan, Hennig because you'll be next... BANG!!!" <strong>64</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/DDP_zpsaavnkm5p.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Konnan_zpsz6ll6v7b.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Diamond Dallas Page vs. Konnan w/ Vincent</p><p> </p><p> DDP looked to impress the nWo and send a message and he certainly did in this match. The WCW True Born took on a nWo member in Konnan and dispatched him in a great TV match. Despite repeated interference attempts from Vincent, DDP won after hitting a Diamond Cutter as Konnan was attempting neckbreaker. <strong>82</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Curt%20Hennig_zpstayvam0v.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> After the match was over though out came Hennig, who hit DDP in the head with the US title from behind! As we faded to commercial Hennig could be heard hollering "This is the closest you'll ever get Dallas" <strong>75</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Raven_zpsrvstrepa.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We return from our promotional consideration (ironically heavily featuring Milton Bradley's Karate Fighters) to a dark and dingy corner of the Georgia Dome and the dark figure of Raven. He talks about his most recent target Chris Benoit, who Raven is obsessed on getting to join his Flock of oddities. "Christopher, I implore you to join my Flock but I fear once again you will reject me. I offer you a choice: eternal salvation under my guidance or be doomed to obscurity. Your choice, Christopher. Quote the Raven, Nevermore." <strong>68</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Dave%20Taylor_zpsupkcopjo.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Steven%20Regal_zpsw24e79zz.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Booker%20T_zpstgieubwz.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Stevie%20Ray_zps9jdifixo.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> The Blue Bloods vs. Harlem Heat</p><p> </p><p> A contest between two of the top teams, which Schiavone uses to promote as the fact you can only see this kind of action on WCW! As expected this match had crisp technical wrestling and Stevie Ray was there too. This match had a distinct story where Harlem Heat couldn't take control when Regal was in the ring as he quickly grounded either man, but Harlem Heat managed to gain the upperhand when it was just them and Taylor. In the end it was Taylor who cost the Blue Bloods the victory as he telegraphed a backdrop allowing Stevie to hit a huge running knee and a tag to Booker who finished him off with a Harlem Hangover <strong>63</strong></p><p> </p><p> <iframe width="90" height="90" src="<a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bxgoajDI1WQ" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/bxgoajDI1WQ"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ted%20Turner_zpszevxttzw.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> As Hail to the Chief plays, Ted Turner makes his way to the ring flanked by security personal. As a huge amount of pyro, goes off behind him we hear that Bobby Heenan is standing to attention as he hollers "It's the President!" at his colleagues. Turner enters the ring and has a microphone and is getting ready to address the crowd when he is interrupted by some familiar music. </p><p> </p><p> <iframe width="90" height="90" src="<a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nYkcJafsnns" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/nYkcJafsnns"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Eric%20Bischoff_zpsqtcit9bi.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Bischoff comes out with none of his usual swagger. He looks like a man on death row as he marches to the ring. He gets in and begins to speak. "Mr. Turner, I want you to know... I'm SORRRY!!!!" The crowd boos as Heenan says what everyone is thinking "That's a load of crap." Bischoff continues "Mr. Turner I'm sorry I fell for that dastardly Hogan and his evil malicious ways. I'm sorry I let you down, I let these fans down (boos) and worst of all, I let myself down." Fans are now literally throwing trash at Bischoff. He ignores it. "Mr. Turner I beg you... DON'T FIIiiRE MEEEEEeee!!!!" Eric's voice breaks as he starts crying and drops to his knees. Turner raises the mic to his lips. "Eric... I'm not going to fire you." Eric looks overjoyed and goes to hug Turner until he clocks the security and thinks better of it. Turner continues "I came here with 3 big announcements so if I may." Bischoff goes to leave "Not so fast Eric. One of them involves yourself." Bischoff looks like a deer caught in the headlights as he backs into a corner. Turner continues "The first announcement is an exciting one for all you wrestling fans right here in Georgia! (cheap pop) As WCW has decided to open a wrestling school and academy promotion based right here (cheers) This company will be called Georgia Championship Wrestling and will run shows once a month on the Saturday before a WCW Pay Per View extravaganza."</p><p> </p><p> "The second announcement is one for all you wrestling fans watching at home. Starting this Thursday, we are proud to launch Thunder! A brand new 2 hour show on all the networks that currently run Nitro. Be sure to tune in the Thursday for the historic first episode!"</p><p> </p><p> Bischoff having regained his swagger a bit interrupts Turner "So what's the announcement that relates to me? These are interesting but what is it?"</p><p> </p><p> Turner continues "Eric the final announcement is that I have found a solution to the WCW and nWo conflict. Thunder is not a WCW show... it's an nWo one... run by you." Eric's mouth hangs open as he realises the power he now has! But Turner continues. "On the first Nitro of January next year, we are gonna have a draft with each show then having separate distinct rosters. Each brand will have a General Manager who will make the draft selections and run the shows answering only to me. Eric you will be the nWo GM." Eric is crying tears of joy this time as he celebrates in the ring. "Thank you Mr. Turner, Can I call you Ted? I'm so happy I always knew you liked me." Turner interrupts "I don't like you, but your little group brings in the ratings. Don't forget I can still fire you." Bischoff calms down at that remark. "And I was about to introduce a very special guest... ladies and gentlmen I give to you, the General Manager of the WCW brand."</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <iframe width="90" height="90" src="<a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1NRn8k18Ufw" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/1NRn8k18Ufw"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> "ARN ANDERSON!!!!" </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Arn%20Anderson_zpsyofhktiz.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Out comes Arn to a rousing ovation in Atlanta. He has a microphone in hand. "Firstly, I want to thank you for this opportunity Mr. Turner. Secondly, I want to say how much I'm looking forward to taking WCW to the next level without clingers on." Arn looks at Bischoff who feigns suprise. "And speaking of you, Bischoff. I want you to know that even though my wrestling days are over. I will kick your grovelling little ass every week with a better show and beat you at your own game." Bischoff starts to make a witty retort but goes for a karate kick on Arn! This ends badly for Bischoff as Arn grabs his leg and his instincts of decades kick in, SPINE BUSTER!!! The crowd goes mental as the WCW GM stands over his nWo rival as Nitro goes to commercial. <strong>75</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/Misc/nWoannouncement_zpsi2p2b5oz.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Kevin%20Nash_zpseljswxhg.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We come back from commercial to Kevin Nash in the black and white world of the nWo. He calls the Giant a Giant Loser, laughing at his own terrible joke. He says there is only one true giant in WCW and it's Big Sexy. He says at Starrcade he'll show the world the Giant is a giant coward, as he won't be a big enough man to accept this challenge. "Me and you, freakazoid, one on one." <strong>82</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ric%20Flair_zpsnqigmsyr.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Miss%20Elizabeth_zpsppxddcyx.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We cut to the catering area backstage where Ric Flair is ordering some food (WOOO!) dressed in his robe, he notices Elizabeth from out of the corner of his eye, who's next in line. The Nature Boy starts flirting with Liz offering her a lot of innuendos. Interestingly Liz doesn't reject his advances and plays along. Flair says he has to go for his match, but leaves his hotel room number for Liz! <strong>63</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Gene%20Okerlund_zpsbljuznh5.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Eric%20Bischoff_zpsqtcit9bi.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> To the interview area with Mean Gene, who is joined by Eric Bischoff, the newly appointed nWo Thunder GM promises that he will sue that hick Anderson for laying his hands on an executive. Okerlund points out Bischoff started it but get ignored, as Eric talks directly to the camera and Arn Anderson. "You may think you can come into my world and take the fight to me but trust me, you don't know who you are dealing with I betrayed everything and everyone to get where I am today. What do you think I'll do to you Arn." <strong>65</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ric%20Flair_zpsnqigmsyr.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Norton_zpsjih6rwa0.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Ric Flair vs. Scott Norton w/ Vincent</p><p> </p><p> These two put in a good match as you'd expect from Flair and Norton too. Norton dominated the early going after as brief flurry of offence by Flair was cut off by Vincent tripping him from the outside. Norton used his raw power to toss around Flair like a cruiserweight. He looked set to record a big victory that a lot of people would call an upset until Flair manage to get an eye poke and a rollup for the three! Despite the cheating the fans celebrated. <strong>73</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Lex%20Luger_zpsfmi1vaqz.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> "To the Back!" Says Tenay, as we see Lex Luger flexing his mighty muscles. He talks about his recent rivalry with Buff Bagwell and says he's gonna prove once and for all he's the total package. "Next week Bagwell! Me and You! PoseDown on Nitro! LET'S DO IIIITTTT!!!!" <strong>72</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Arn%20Anderson_zpsyofhktiz.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Larry%20Zbyszko_zpskvl8e77b.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We see (but don't hear) the WCW GM Anderson and Larry Zbyszko. Larry looks to be congratulating his former partner on his new job. Then the meeting takes an interesting as both men appear to be discussing something animatedly. Anderson likes what he hears and gives Zbyszko the thumbs up! <strong>53</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Rick%20Steiner_zpskzcbh9nb.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Steiner_zpshcxn9hdt.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> The Steiners fill the screen, the WCW Tag Team Championships proudly draped on their shoulders. They talk about the great history of tag teams in WCW and some of the great names they faced in the past. "But no team impresses us quite like Harlem Heat." says Rick. "THAT'S WHY WE IS ISSUING A CHALLENGE TO YOU" Hollers Scott. "Starrcade, we want the two best teams in WCW to face off. Steiners vs. Harlem Heat for what could be the last time." "YEAH" yells Scott "AND WHEN WE BEAT YOU, 'ERYONE WILL KNO' THE STEINERS ARE BEST IN THA WORLD!!!" <strong>70</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ric%20Flair_zpsnqigmsyr.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Randy%20Savage_zpsofn5houq.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Miss%20Elizabeth_zpsppxddcyx.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We now find ourselves in the backstage car parking area as Flair talks to the valet to get his car to go home. He is about to go WOOO! when he's jumped from behind! "IT'S RANDY SAVAGE!!!" yells Schiavone. "We know who he is Tony he's on TV every week" replies Heenan. What followed was a 5 minute assault caught on camera. As Elizabeth looked on impassively Savage drilled Flair's head into car windows, clobbered him with steel chains and left the WCW Legend in a pool of his own blood. One thing is clear, Savage doesn't approve of this relationship between Flair and Liz. <strong>74</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Hall_zpsucyyqimm.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Steiner_zpshcxn9hdt.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Scott Hall vs. Scott Steiner</p><p> </p><p> Our main event saw one half of the current tag champs take on one half of the longest reigning tag champions. Hall however is vastly more experienced in single's action and that experience paid off in this match. Despite Steiner dominating the early going with huge suplexes, awe inspiring speed and a really aggresive mentality, Hall derailed his momentum when he ducked a Steinerline and hit a big lariat of his own on the way back. This floored Steiner and allowed Hall to press his advantage. After only getting a two with a super fall-away slam(!) Hall finally picked up the victory with a Outsider's Edge. Little ironic coming from the Lex Express himself.<br /></li><li> In more toxic backstage news for WCW we've heard rumours that <strong>Buff Bagwell</strong> was involved in a unknown incident at Nitro this week. Konnan vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

Comments: Hm... NWO probably wins most, if not all, the first Thunder matches.

WCW Television Championship

Disco Inferno vs. Saturn ©

Comments: I know Saturn eventually becomes NWO -- right now, he's in a storyline and Disco Inferno is dancing. Storyline beats dancing.

Lex Luger vs. Scott Hall

Comments: Scott just won World War 3, and is in line for a title shot -- but whose title will he "shoot" for?

El Dandy vs. Goldberg

Comments: ..but who are we to doubt EL DANDY?

Booker T vs. Hollywood Hogan

Comments: I hate the Huckster, brother. But love him or hate him (and most people hate the Huckster) he's going over on Thunder #1.

Comments/Advice: Looking forward to this! Love from a creative standpoint where this is going... I've always thought that not splitting the brands was a big mistake. I love the debut of NWO "Thunder" -- who are you planning to slot in as announcers?

I'm really enjoying the writing so far.

The draft will be intriguing. Arn is a real wild card -- will he draft "NWO" guys? How will he deal with the NWO? I'm looking forward to "Reboot Nitro" far more than "Debut Thunder". Both will be good, but Nitro is up against RAW -- and that will add another dynamic.

Brand split is a neat idea. I like Arn running Nitro, for sure.

Konnan - As much as Rey is your future, at this point he's only a cruiserweight while Konnan is nWo. Nice win for Gonnad to recoup some momentum lost against DDP.

Saturn - No title change here.

Scott Hall - Unfortunately, Lex's time in the sun is pretty much passed.

Goldberg - It continues.

Hollywood Hogan - Wow, a Hogan match on Thunder! It's gonna be a huge event for sure!

WCW/nWo brand-extension is a great idea, and one that was quite close to becoming reality at one point. Eric Bischoff's stated goal was that he wanted the two biggest wrestling companies in the US to be WCW and nWo, as egomaniacal as that might sound. You have a reader in me, I'm looking forward to see what you do with it!

<p>Good first show there, until now I didn't even know you could have a video clip in a post. And for my picks I'll go:</p><p> </p><p>

Disco Inferno vs. <strong>Saturn</strong> ©</p><p>

Comments: Should be a good match and I can't see Saturn dropping it this early, well at least not in your thread</p><p> </p><p>

Lex Luger vs. <strong>Scott Hall</strong></p><p>

Comments: Hall's going to go 2-0 to punish Lex for his comments about Malenko</p><p> </p><p>

El Dandy vs. <strong>Goldberg</strong></p><p>

Comments: I really want to go with my heart and say El Dandy since I've seen your love for him in multiple videos but I've got to go with Goldberg. </p><p> </p><p>

Booker T vs. <strong>Hollywood Hogan</strong></p><p>

Comments: Hogan's going to start the series off with a win in my opinion, but Booker will put in a good showing.</p>

<p>Hi, so bad news I forgot to change Thunder to be an "A" show and now can't change it in game. Additionally, broadcasters won't let me cancel the deal to alter it and the in game editor doesn't allow it to be changed.</p><p> </p><p>

Would it be cool if I just reran the first Nitro with the exact same card and then continued from there with the only change being switching Thunder to an A show? I've been really into this diary and while it would take a lot of work rehiring all those people for developmental I would happily do it.</p><p> </p><p>

So please let me know <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I'll probably do it anyway but wanted to get your opinions on it.</p>
