WCW vs. nWo - The War Begins... Again

Recommended Posts

Yeah I'll start over, seeing as I'm only got one show in and I kept extensive notes of what I did <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> (I'll leave the Nitro write-up as I won't change anything booking wise and head straight to Thunder & Saturday Night)

He welcomes us to the first episode of nWo Thunder as we see the ring with its black canvas with a blue thunder logo on it. Blue ropes end in dark black turnbuckles emblazoned with the nWo logo. The stage has a long ramp that joins up to the ring apron with a huge stage at the top of the ramp, the nWo broadcast booth is situated in front of a huge screen while the wrestlers enter from a dark blue, steel and black coloured industrial set. "Behold my beautiful creation! The greatest promotion in the world!" <strong>71</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Konnan_zpsz6ll6v7b.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Rey%20Mysterio%20Jr_zpsukbbukzu.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Konnan vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.</p><p> </p><p> This was a solid opening to the first Thunder and a sure fire trivia question one day. Luckily, Konnan saved the nWo from any embarrassment as he successfully managed to win the first ever match on Nitro. Mysterio really put in a great effort to spoil the nWo's party, getting several near two counts before finally falling victim to the Ziplock submission. <strong>61</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Hollywood%20Hogan_zpsez0farud.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We cut backstage to our lord and saviour (at least according to Bischoff) Hollywood Hogan. He talks about his rivalry with Sting. "Sting, brother. You may have been the big name when WCW was a backyard hick company, but brother, I turned it into a juggernaught. Now I want to kill it off so I can go to Hollywood, make a ton of money and never have to subject myself to these Hulkanerds again. Sting you think you've got my number, but your wrong, jack. At Starrcade, I'll kill off WCW once and for all... by killing their icon in the ring." <strong>85</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Kevin%20Nash_zpseljswxhg.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We cut to another area of backstage and to "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash. He talks about his rival, The Giant! He issues a challenge to the Giant... to sign a contract for a Starrcade match tonight! <strong>86</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">WCW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP</span></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/Belts/wcwtv_zpshsamv7mf.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Disco%20Inferno_zps1shiafeq.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Perry%20Saturn_zpsa3pcig0u.jpg</span> <strong>[c]</strong></p><p> </p><p> Disco may have been the former champion but he didn't look it tonight. After boogie-ing up to Saturn and jiving right in his face, Inferno was nearly decapitated by a lariat from the enforcer of the Flock. Saturn made light work of the former champion toying with him as he sent a message to Benoit. "If you want Raven, you have to go through me." Disco was finally put out of his misery via a Rings of Saturn leading to a submission victory. <strong>61</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Larry%20Zbyszko_zpskvl8e77b.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Eric%20Bischoff_zpsqtcit9bi.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We head back to the ring as Larry Zbyszko makes his way to the ring, much to Rude and Bischoff's annoyance. With a WCW-branded mic in hand, Larry says he isn't here to start trouble, but he wants to make an offer to Eric Bischoff! Eric grabs a nWo branded mic and asks Zybszko what he has in mind. Larry says "I've had my differences with you punks but I've got a deal for you. All written up nice and legal too." He pulls out a contract. "This contract is for a match at Starrcade, where a WCW representative picked by myself will face a nWo representative picked by you Eric." Eric laughs as he asks: "What's in it for me?"</p><p> </p><p> "I thought you'd ask that" Zbyszko says. "So I made a deal with WCW General Manager and my former tag team partner Arn Anderson." Bischoff visually twitches at the mention of Anderson. "Whichever brand's representative wins the match at Starrcade... will have the #1 pick in the draft in January!" Bischoff mulls over his options...</p><p> </p><p> "OK, Zbyszko, you got a deal." <strong>71</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/DDP_zpsaavnkm5p.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We get a DDP promo backstage, he talks about Hennig assaulting him after Page's match on Nitro. WCW. <strong>76</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Lex%20Luger_zpsfmi1vaqz.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Hall_zpsucyyqimm.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Lex Luger vs. Scott Hall</p><p> </p><p> The second nWo member match of the night, Hall continued the streak of nWo victories as he made quick work of Luger. The former face of WCW didn't have quite enough in the tank. Hall dominated most of the match and finally finished off Luger with an Outsider's Edge. <strong>69</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Randy%20Savage_zpsofn5houq.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Miss%20Elizabeth_zpsppxddcyx.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Savage is backstage with a concerned Miss Elizabeth. The Macho Man is bright red, veins bulging from his neck as he starts ranting about Ric Flair. He says that Flair should stay away from Elizabeth or Savage will break his face. He calls Flair a lecherous has-been, says he never could get a women like Elizabeth and that must eat him up. Knowing no matter what number of wife he's on, he'll never have what Savage has. <strong>84</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/El%20Dandy_zpszhrc6yiy.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Goldberg_zpsaybsvkrg.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> El Dandy vs. Goldberg</p><p> </p><p> Dandy hit a dropkick in this match at the opening. Goldberg didn't even flinch. What followed was 3 minutes and 45 seconds of absolute dominance as Goldberg demonstrated his power skills easily suplexing The Green Eyed Rudo. He finally threw Dandy into a corner and pinned him following The Spear. <strong>55</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ric%20Flair_zpsnqigmsyr.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We cut backstage to Ric Flair, who issues a response to Savage's remarks. He calls Savage delusional. He asks why Elizabeth never asked him to stop flirting. "Because, she wants a go on Space Mountain!!! WOOO!!!" He can't blame Savage for being jealous, but Flair has dealt with more jealous husbands than Michael Jordan scores points in the NBA. "Savage, you are no different to the hicks whose old ladies love the Nature Boy, and when I get a chance I'll prove it." <strong>79</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Booker%20T_zpstgieubwz.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Stevie%20Ray_zps9jdifixo.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> We then cut to Harlem Heat who say they want to address the Steiner's statements from Nitro. Booker said this Sunday might be the last time the four of them are all together. It might be his last chance to team with his brother. Stevie says that he can't think of a better way to possibly end their team than to take on the best team in WCW. "So at Starrcade, Steiners vs. Harlem Heat for the tag titles one last time." <strong>65</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Eric%20Bischoff_zpsqtcit9bi.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Kevin%20Nash_zpseljswxhg.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/The%20Giant_zpsnavurx6d.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Bischoff makes his way to the ring where a table is draped with a nWo tablecloth. He informs us it is now time for the Kevin Nash vs. The Giant contract signing. Out comes Kevin Nash, with a lot of pyro, he makes his way to the ring full of swagger. He takes a seat and Bischoff announces his opponent, The Giant!</p><p> </p><p> ...</p><p> </p><p> The Giant!!!</p><p> </p><p> ...</p><p> </p><p> the giant?</p><p> </p><p> Nash picks up a microphone "I guess Lord Hudongous was too scared to sign a contract with a real Giant like myself. After all I..."</p><p> </p><p> Nash is cut off by a primal roar coming from the stage as we see The Giant force his way to the ring. He is surrounded by a crowd of nWo shirt wearing security guards who are attempting to hold him back, to little avail. Giant cuts a path through the group to get to Nash, and climbs in the ring with guards literally hanging off him. Nash looks intimidated with eyes wide.</p><p> </p><p> "OK then let's make this official." says Bischoff trying to contain a Giant problem. "Mr. Nash, you sign first." Nash reluctantly picks up the pen and scrawls his name on the contract. The Giant doesn't take his eyes off Nash and stands unblinking at him. Bischoff takes the pen and the contract to the Giant.</p><p> </p><p> "Mr. The Giant, would you sign the contract please." He says to the Giant's torso. Giant takes the contract and signs his name on the dotted line. Bischoff takes the contract and legs it back to beside Rude. The Giant doesn't move. Nash starts laughing. "Hey, big guy. You can go now. See you on Starrcade." </p><p> </p><p> Nash gets up. The Giant moves. With lightning speed he tips the table up and onto Nash and jumps on Big Sexy. He begins to send repeated punches straight into Nash's head. Nash trys to choke the life out of the Giant to save himself. The nWo security show up again in double numbers. They somehow manage to seperate the two, but then they break away and go at each other again. Eventually The Giant is ejected from the arena. It's clear this match will be a war. <strong>84</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Ric%20Flair_zpsnqigmsyr.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Randy%20Savage_zpsofn5houq.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Miss%20Elizabeth_zpsppxddcyx.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> As we see the Giant being walked out of the arena by nWo security, we hear a familiar voice behind the camera.</p><p> </p><p> "OOOOOOOOOOOOHH YEAAAAAAAAHHHH, THERE YOU ARE FLAIR, YOU LITTLE [CENSORED]"</p><p> </p><p> As Bischoff apologises for the language, the camera pans to show Savage with a terrified Elizabeth behind him eyeballing Flair. The two get into each other faces as Liz looks uncomfortable in the background. Eventually they come to blows and this time each man gets his fair share of the action. Flair manages to throw Savage into a vending machine and clobbers him with a tire iron! Savage meanwhile attacks Flair with a production crate and then hits Flair with a trash can and empties the contents on to him screaming "THAT'S WHERE YOU BELONG FLAIR!!!" Eventually as Savage tries to choke out Flair with an electrical cable, the fight gets broken up. Elizabeth looks terrified at what these two men are doing. She checks on Flair as he lies limp before trying to calm Savage down. <strong>80</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Booker%20T_zpstgieubwz.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Hollywood%20Hogan_zpsez0farud.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Booker T vs. Hollywood Hogan</p><p> </p><p> The main event of the first nWo Thunder of course featured the "Beatles of Professional Wrestling" (According to Eric Bischoff) Hollywood Hogan. However, despite taking on someone with limited experience as a single's competitor, this was no easy day for Hogan. Hogan had the upper hand in the early going but was cut off by a huge sidekick by Booker! He pressed the advantage and looked to be on the verge of upsetting Hogan. He hit a huge scissor's kick but only got a two count. Booker then went to the top rope and hit a Harlem Hangover!!! Bischoff screams in horror and Rude is silent in shock. nWo senior referee counts the pin...</p><p> </p><p> 1....................</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2....................................................................................</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> All of a sudden Patrick disappears from the ring. We see the Outsiders have dragged him out and they enter the ring. What follows is a 3 on 1 beatdown as Patrick is "incapacitated " Booker is given an Outsider's Edge, a Jacknife, and his limb body is held up by Nash and Hall for Hogan to hit an Axe Bomber. Hall throws Patrick back in who is miraculously recovered. He see Hogan pin Booker. 123. Hogan wins. <strong>71</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Booker%20T_zpstgieubwz.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Hollywood%20Hogan_zpsez0farud.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Kevin%20Nash_zpseljswxhg.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Scott%20Hall_zpsucyyqimm.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Randy%20Savage_zpsofn5houq.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Curt%20Hennig_zpstayvam0v.jpg</span><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Buff%20Bagwell_zpsohtarhbt.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Hogan gets Nash to get him a mic. "Listen dude, this stupid young punk tried to embarrass me on my show dude. Now he's gotta pay brother." This leads to a whole host of nWo members flooding the ring. They have a prolonged beatdown on limp Booker while Bischoff and Rude cheer them on. This goes on for a few minutes until... The lights go out.</p><p> </p><p> Bischoff on commentary says "No. It can't be. He can't be here."</p><p> </p><p> A spotlight hits the rafters and a lone figure descends from the heavens. WCW fans at home cheer for their icon.</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Sting_zpszjdec3pk.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> "IT'S STING!!!!"</p><p> </p><p> The nWo backs off as Sting descends. He lands and removes his harness as the nWo look on in fear. Then Bagwell trys to rush Sting, he gets a backfist for the effort. Sting reaches behind a back and pulls a baseball bat from his harness. It's on. Sting charges at the black and white horde. He decks Hennig with a baseball shot to the cranium. The US champion collapses out of the ring, as Sting moves on Savage and unleashes a flurry that causes an already hurting Macho Man to flee. A bat thrust to the throat of Nash and a shot to the knee of Hall floors the Outsiders. The only people left standing are Hogan and Sting. Hollywood looks terrified by what he's seen as Sting points the bat at him, then makes a cutting the throat gesture with his free hand. Hogan looks like he's about to flee when the lights go down again. When they come back Sting has disappeared along with Booker. All that's left is a bat lying amongst the floored nWo members. Hogan's terrified face fills the screen as we end the first episode of Thunder. <strong>89</strong></p><p> </p><p> Overall Grade <strong>79</strong></p><p> </p><p></p></div><div style="text-align:center;"></div><div></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42326" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/Events/WCWStarrcade97_zpshseincen.jpg</span></p><div style="text-align:center;"></div><p> </p><p> <span style="font-family:Impact;"><span style="font-size:36px;">WCW/nWo STARRCADE 1997</span></span></p><p> CARD TO BE FINALIZED!</p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> Hollywood Hogan [c] vs. Sting</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">WCW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP</span></p><p> </p><p> Harlem Heat vs. The Steiner Brothers ©</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">The Battle of the Giants</span></p><p> </p><p> Kevin Nash vs. The Giant</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Winner's brand gets the first pick in the WCW/nWo draft</span></p><p> </p><p> WCW Representative w/ Larry Zbyszko vs. nWo representative w/ Eric Bischoff</p><p> </p><p> And Much more to be confirmed!</p><p> </p><p> <em>* Card Subject to Change</em></p><p> </p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/Misc/observernewsletter_zpskf0mzf87.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> WEEK 1 DECEMBER 1997</p><p> </p><p> Sunday Morning Update</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z378/Mildly-Amusing/1997/People/Dave%20Meltzer_zpsxk7qd5jx.jpg</span></p><p> by David Meltzer</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Thunder Concise Results</span></p><p> </p><p> Konnan d. He said "<strong>Mortis</strong> is a star in the making, could make some serious money in the future" while being interviewed on a radio show and later on while appearing on a local Florida TV affiliate to promote WCW, Konnan also complimented <strong>Goldberg</strong> saying "[He] is charismatic, I can see him doing well in the future."<br /></li><li> There were further try outs at the nWo Thunder taping before the show. <strong>Psychosis</strong> wrestled a local hispanic wrestler called <strong>Hotstuff Hernandez</strong> and <strong>Chavo Guerrero Jr.</strong> took on <strong>Pat Tanaka</strong>, one half of both the Orient Express in the WWF and Badd Company. Tanaka is apparently being considered as a trainer and apparently gave a very good performance.<br /></li><li> <strong>Chris Adams</strong> apparently pulled a very tasteless rib at the Thunder tapings. He was given a stern warning by WCW management.<br /></li><li> Speaking of backstage news from WCW, <strong>Buff Bagwell</strong> also got into trouble for mocking Super Calo for being a "lower tier wrestler". Bagwell was punished with a stern warning as appears to be the WCW norm for first time offenders.<br /></li><li> Some good news for WCW's backstage environment came from an incident involving <strong>Scott Steiner</strong>. Steiner was found to be boastful and cocky backstage annoying his fellow employees. He was dragged before Wrestler's Court where Judge <strong>Dusty Rhodes</strong> <em>(Now there's a gimmick Vince should've done)</em> sentenced him to be silent and buy the entire locker room drinks. Given the size of WCW's roster, Steiner is likely bankrupt. This did however seem to work as Steiner seems to have improved his behaviour.<br /></li><li> <strong>Booker T</strong> showed once again why he should be featured higher up the card in WCW. He and <strong>Hollywood Hogan</strong> surprisingly had natural chemistry and it made for a great TV main event. Booker should hopefully benefit from the split rosters.<br /></li><li> Reportedly, <strong>Hogan</strong> has had a temper tantrum as he has been told he can't be the company figurehead as he'll only appear on one show after the draft. He's apparently received a lot of bonuses to try an smooth things over, which haven't worked too well. Apparently WCW management had to go as far as giving him a week's holiday and hiring people to please Hogan.<br /></li><li> Finally we get to the saga of the <strong>Public Enemy</strong>, the former ECW standouts have been a flop in WCW and their recent behaviour only made things worse. For starters at the nWo Thunder tapings, <strong>Grunge</strong> was found taking drugs while <strong>Rocco Rock</strong> showed up late for a road agent meeting.<br /></li><li> The situation then got worse as they were allowed to compete on Saturday Night, but both men were clearly wasted in the ring. WCW management gave both stern warnings. Interestingly, <strong>Johnny Grunge</strong> took the warning to heart, while <strong>Rocco Rock</strong> actually ignored it and has seen his behaviour decline.<br /></li><li> Perhaps most importantly, <strong>Public Enemy's</strong> drugged out antics might have made them a very dangerous enemy as <strong>Meng</strong> was furious at having to work with them. Given Meng's reputation I'd be concerned for the Public Enemy's safety.<br /></li></ul><p></p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">THUNDER RATINGS REPORT</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> Dave's Grade: <strong>79</strong> (1 less than Nitro, 3 more than Raw)</p><p> Ratings: <strong>15.41</strong> (0.42 less than Nitro, 2.06 more than Raw)</p><p> Viewers: <strong>11,564,810</strong> (155,550 less than Nitro, 1,550,570 More than Raw)</p><p> </p><p> </p></div><p></p>
