WCW 1994-Where wrestling remains in the marquee

This week in the newsletter we look back at what was probably the biggest turning point in the 90's when it comes to the world of wrestling. As everyone knows Hulk Hogan left the WWF in 1993 following a loss to Yokozuna at King of the Ring 1993. It was a screwy ending to the match, and also a rather poor way for Hulkamania to end in the WWF after all the money that Hulk Hogan had made for the WWF to that point. In his absence the direction for the WWF changed as they started to push the smaller, more skilled talents culminating in Bret Hart claiming the World Wrestling Federation Championship at WrestleMania X while being involved with a tremendous feud against his brother Owen Hart. It looked like the future would involve Bret Hart, Owen Hart and Shawn Michaels forming the basis of a 'New Generation' in the WWF.

Over in WCW there was also a bit of a revolution going on, but it wasn't a new face that was pushing it forward, it was an old familiar face. His name was Ric Flair, the man some would call the greatest wrestler of all time. He had left WCW in 1991 in disgust and gone to the WWF, leaving Sting to try and carry the weight of the company on his back. And he tried, and in some way actually managed to have some success, but WCW was losing money hand over fist. It was the return of Flair and the ascension of Eric Bischoff as Executive Producer that times were changing, but it also seemed like it was the last gasp at survival WCW had. And they almost screwed that up. Instead of giving the fans more of what they wanted, and pushing Ric Flair into the Main Event of Starrcade they instead decided to go with a match of dominant World Champion Vader against big lug Sid Vicious. Of course Flair was the first WCW International World Champion, but that's a different story for a different day. Fate intervened though with Sid Vicious trying to stab Arn Anderson with a pair of scissors, losing his spot, losing his title shot, and losing his job. Enter Flair who had a great Main Event with Vader, won the Heavyweight Championship and soon after would become the Head Booker and start promoting good ol' fashioned traditional style wrestling again and the fans starts to actually pay attention. The burden of being both World Champion and Head Booker was starting to get to Flair though, and he had begun giving more and more control over to a booking committee that included Eric Bischoff, Tony Schiavone, and Kevin Sullivan among others. He also let some wrestlers have more control over their own stories then others; which led to a different style being added to WCW as Mick Foley in his character of Cactus Jack began to bring in some elements of the garbage style that was becoming common in the northeastern promotion of ECW, giving the fans of WCW a taste of something different.

Meanwhile Eric Bischoff was attacking things from a different angle, making huge cutbacks to the roster, to wages, to the schedule, filming months of television at a time at the Disney-MGM Grand Studios in Orlando, Florida, whatever it would take to cut costs. And it paid off as he managed to convince Ted Turner to open the purse strings a bit, and Easy E immediately knew what he wanted to do with it. Together with Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff approached Hulk Hogan where he was filming Thunder in Paradise at the same studio lot. They worked to convince Hogan to return to wrestling, wooing him to come and sign with WCW and give WCW their first true genre breaking superstar. Hogan made a few appearances for WCW, and as the end of May approached it looked like everything was in place for a contract to be signed and for Hogan to officially join WCW in early June.

And then....

At the last moment Vince McMahon had a change of heart, and he approached Hulk Hogan about returning to the WWF, promising to promote him as their 'Babe Ruth,' someone who was above the very sport itself. Whatever was said between the two men, it was enough to convince Hogan to return 'home' to the WWF. The decision would have far reaching consequences for both companies. In the WWF the return of Hogan was meant with disbelief by Bret Hart, as he had a long standing feud with Hogan and could not believe that after all the work he had done he was once again going to be pushed aside to make way for the Hulkster. Vince tried to reassure him that was no the case, but for obvious reasons Bret remained skeptical, and it was the beginning of the end for the strong relationship between the Champion and the man he had once referred to as a 'father figure.' He was not the only one who was vocal with his displeasure as it was felt all throughout the roster, from Shawn Michaels who had not even been a World Champion yet to the commentator's table where Randy Savage was already upset with his place in the company. The seeds were sown for what was to come with that one decision.

In WCW the ax fell hard on Eric Bischoff just as it seemed his biggest coup was going to push him all the way to the top of WCW as their President, he now he was left holding an empty cookie jar. While he did maintain his position of Producer of the company, he was removed as booker for the company. His new task was to try and further improve WCW in other area's to both save money, but also to make them more competitive with the WWF. This began quite quickly with changes made to the quality of the broadcasts, but that was just the beginning. With Hogan not coming in, there was weeks of shows that were filmed and no longer relevant, so the first thing Eric had to worry about was running a live episode of WCW Saturday Night the first week of June as a stop-gag. It turned out to be considered such a success that Easy E managed to regain some glory by pushing Ted Turner to allow them to take Saturday Night live each week. As extra money was pumped into the promotion to allow for that, they even started to move again trying to grow their popularity beyond the Southern United States. This was just the beginning though as 1995 would bring along plenty more changes when it came to how WCW ran, and those changes would revolutionize the business for everyone.

With Flair officially done as Head Booker, and Eric Bischoff being put in charge of the non-wrestling portion of WCW a new voice was needed to run the wrestling aspect. Many were worried that Ted Turner would turn to Dusty Rhodes, a familiar choice who had shown he had lost touch as booker. Other names considered were Bill Watts, yes again, Kevin Sullivan and some other lesser known names. Imagine everyone's surprise when Turner actually decided to go back to a man who had been considered before Eric Bischoff, as he named loyal company man Tony Schiavone as the new Header Booker. Tony took over a company that looked like it might be on its last legs, and he wanted to keep with the style that Flair had established to start the new year. Of course we all know how it turned out as......

OOC: A big thank you to Hive to begin as I will be using his 1994 mod, with a couple of tweaks including the start date to get this story started where I want it to. For those who have followed my diaries in the past I hope you will enjoy this new take, with another different style. Finally I just wanted to acknowledged my two biggest inspirations, Wildfire1324 with his amazing National Wrestling Alliance diary and for The Final Countdown and his spectacular Ring of Honor diary first and then of course his winding down Golden Age and Beyond diary.

<p></p><div style="text-align:left;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/ew7LW6Y.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Hello my name is D.A and this will be the first of my Dastardly Reviews as I start by looking back at World Championship Wrestling during what I consider to be their most interesting time. I didn't know a lot about wrestling when I first started watching, but I know where my interest began...and that was with Steve Austin winning the World title. That made me look a bit into the history of wrestling and I was shocked to find out that Hulk Hogan almost left the WWF for WCW, something that caught me completely by surprise after how he has become so linked with WWF after all these years. I can't imagine what would have happened if he had gone to WCW, would my favourite company even still be alive I wonder? I'm going to begin these reviews with the Saturday Night episode that was supposed to be Hulk Hogan's debut, but in order to get a better idea of what was going on before that I thought I'd throw up a quick review of the hour long Saturday Night from the week before. I'm sure I will be playing with the format of these reviews as we go ahead, but I hope everyone enjoys.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/bc5QgL7.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WCW Saturday Night</span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> 5-28-94</span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> The show began with “Mean” Gene Okerlund on the set of Thunder in Paradise tracking down Hulk Hogan to ask him if he was going to be coming to WCW to face Ric Flair. Hogan said he wasn’t sure, that he wanted to know what all the Hulkamainiacs thought. He wasn’t in the company yet and he was already insulting Flair as he called him a “11 time world Champion,” with Okerlund having to correct him by pointing out he was a “12 time Champion now” and Hogan responded by saying “after you get to ten does it really matter?” Hogan was already positioning himself as a babyface, while making Ric seem like the bad guy even though Flair has been carrying the company since his return as a babyface. This all ended up turning into a way to get people to go on the WCW hotline, only $0.99 a minute, to vote on whether Hulk Hogan should face Ric Flair</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Match 1: Shanghi (sp?) Pierce vs. Marcus Alexander Bagwell</strong><p> Body of the match: Pierce used his size to beat up on Bagwell for the majority of the match, but it was hard to focus on what was going on in the ring as Tony and Bobby would not shut up about Hogan</p><p> Finishing Moments: Pierce had Bagwell in the corner and went for an Irish Whip that Bagwell reversed sending Pierce into the opposite corner instead. From there he caught Pierce with a Fisherman’s Suplex (The Perfect-Plex) for the pin fall victory at 4:34.</p><p> My Thoughts: As mentioned the match was barely a backdrop to the conversation going on between Tony and Bobby Heenan about Hulk Hogan coming to WCW. . Even at the end of the match “The Brain” flubbed and called Bagwell by the name of Marcus Alexander Hogan.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Gene Okerlund interviewed Col Robert Parker who was upset that anyone had “laid a hand on him,” and he was “not going to buy a pair of tights.” This led to the introduction of Meng as his bodyguard, and when Gene Okerlund tried to interview him there was no response.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Match 2: Scott Stud vs. “Stunning” Steve Austin</strong><p> Body of the match: Austin began the match by working the leg of Stud while Meng watched menacingly from outside of the ring. During the match Tony “was given a piece of paper” and announced that next week on Saturday night WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel would make an announcement regarding the future of the WCW World Heavyweight and WCW International World Championship, hyping the idea of the belts being unified at Clash of Champions. </p><p> Finishing Moments: After working the leg over for the entire match, “Stunning” Steve Austin hooked Stud and rolled him over before locking on Hollywood and Vine to get the submission at 3:51.</p><p> My Thoughts: This was a pretty short match, but it was interesting watching Austin focus on a body part and not relent at any point during the match. The big title unification match was hinted at, of course there can only be one Champion if Hogan is going to come in and quickly beat them to become “the best.”</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Match 3: “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson vs. Kenny Kendal</strong><p> Body of the Match: Quick match, but Anderson still managed to work in some time working the arm of Kendal. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Kendal was running the ropes, and Anderson dropped down to his knee and caught Kendal with a gut punch, before ending the match with a DDT at 2:07.</p><p> My thoughts: There are few wrestlers in the world who are as smooth as Arn Anderson, even in a squash match. I didn’t review last week’s show, but during Anderson’s match on that show Bobby Heenan left the announcers table to go and “get coffee,” and on this show he left to “make a phone call.” Not sure if that was related to all the talk about reuniting the Horsemen or what, but it was definitely weird. </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> After the match Arn Anderson was interviewed by Gene Okerlund who quickly asked Anderson about a reunification of the Four Horsemen. Anderson said he was done “warming up,” but before he could get any further he was interrupted by Col Rob Parker and Meng with an offer for Anderson to join the Stud Stable. “Tell me something, when did you become my advisor?” Anderson was getting more aggressive, and Meng came in between Anderson and Parker. “The Enforcer” finished by saying “You’ve got a stable with a lot of good horses, but you aren’t getting this horse, because I’m not for sale, and if I was, you couldn’t afford me.” </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Match 4: WCW World Television Championship Match: Lord Steven Regal © vs. Larry Zbyszko</strong><p> Body of the Match: This match was a great blend of old school wrestling and the ‘catch as can’ style brought to the match by Regal. Favourite moments include when Zbyszko managed to turn a missed Europen Uppercut into a backslide, Zbyszko choking Sir William out, Regal rubbing his knees across Larry’s face instead of going for a pin and the way the two men acted out a chess match in the middle of the ring. Larry had a Standing Reverse Figure Four locked on, and Tony reminded us that if the match did not end before Saturday Night ended “the tape machine will continue rolling and we will show you the conclusion of the match next week!”</p><p> Finish of the Match: That should have telegraphed the ending right there as indeed there was no finish to the match shown this week as they “ran out of time.” Not something we would ever see today of course, but was interesting to see how these things used to be done. Tune in for my review for next week to see how this match ends.</p><p> My Thoughts: Having watched their match at Slamboree I think I enjoyed this one a bit better, I don’t know what it was about these two, but they had some really good chemistry that really brought the best out in Zybszko.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Overall Grade: B- Lots of solid developments going on here, although a lot of the episode was dedicated to what was going to happen with Hulk Hogan and the World titles and it took the focus away from a lot of what was going on in the ring. That ended with the Main Event though as Regal and Zybszko really gave the announcers and the fans something to care about. Next week we begin this project in earnest as all the plans that WCW had were about to be thrown out the window!</p>

WCW Saturday Night

6-04-94

Attendance: 14658

Location: American Airlines Arena in Orlando, Florida

This week’s episode began with a close up of a very solemn looking Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan who issued a public apology. Tony said “we are not legally allowed to discuss his name, but I think everyone knows who we are referring to, and we here at World Championship Wrestling are sorry we are not able to deliver what we promised last week. This is not the end though because we still have the best fans in the world and we are going to carry on with the best wrestling action you can find anywhere in the world. That’s why tonight in our Main Event we are going to show you the match between Lord Steven Regal and Larry Zbyszko for the World’s Television Championship in its entirety from beginning to ending all in one shot!” Heenan did not have a lot to add, just sitting there with a serious look on his face before the opening entrance music began to play.

Match 1: Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat vs. Steve Keirn

Body of the Match: Keirn did not come out for this match by himself as he was accompanied by his tag team partner in Bad Attitude, Bobby Eaton, as well as the newest member of the group as “Playboy” Buddy Rose made his way into the company. I can’t help but this match was deliberately set up to prove Tony’s point as it was a very solid wrestling match, Steamboat is probably one of the top five wrestlers in the world, and Steve Keirn has proven in the past he can handle a technical match as well with the right opponent.

Finishing Moments: After a series of pin fall reversals, Keirn drove a knee into the ribs of Steamboat before throwing him to the outside where his tag partners were. He then distracted referee David Manning while he expected Eaton and Rose to work over ‘The Dragon’. Instead Buddy Rose ran over Eaton with a Clothesline when Steamboat ducked, and then Steamboat took Rose out with some hard chops. When Keirn turned around Ricky was already perched on the top rope and he caught him with a Diving Crossbody to win the match at 17:31

My Thoughts: I give this match a 76, even though I knew Keirn had no chance in the match he managed to keep me interested while being able to keep up with Ricky Steamboat from a technical standpoint. Ricky has not really had a direction since he lost the World title back to Flair and hopefully that will change soon since I know there’s still a lot of gas left in the tank.

Gene Okerlund hyped the WCW Hotline, mentioning it was the only place where you could get the full story without WCW having to worry about getting sued! Children don’t forget to get your parents’ permission before calling.

Match 2: Frank Andersson vs. Jean-Paul Levesque

Body of the Match: I was thrown at first when Jean-Paul Levesque was announced because I didn’t recognize the name and honestly had turned away from the screen for a moment, but it turns out it is the former Terra Ryzing with a name change. Andersson is a former amateur wrestler, a bronze medalist at the 1984 Summer Olympics in fact, so he actually impressed during parts of the match by taking JPL to the mat.

Finishing Moments: Andersson may have controlled on the mat, but the standing game was different as Levesque nailed Andersson with a high knee to take him down, before following up with a kick to the gut to set up a Double Underhook Facebuster that Heenan said was called the Pedigree for the pin fall victory at 4:56.

My Thoughts: The fans didn’t care much for this match, but I definitely found it interesting watching the young blonde haired man called Jean-Paul Levesque here. There were some early signs of the man that was to come yet already in this match, starting with his new finisher. But there was no denying both men were very green so I’ll give the match a 53.

Gene Okerlund was with Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan and announced a rematch for the WCW World Tag Team Championship would occur at Clash of the Champions when there was a rematch between Sullivan, Jack and the Nasty Boys. Kevin Sullivan called himself a sado-masochist as he had the pleasure of being Champion, but the pain of not being teamed with his brother, but rather with a “sickening mass of humanity” that is Cactus Jack. He talked about pleasure and pain before smacking Cactus Jack, who responded by saying that if Sullivan wanted to be Champion after the Clash he had “two pieces of advice. First, about being my partner, get used to it. And about the slaps…never again! Bang! Bang!”

Match 3: Erick Watts/Terry Taylor vs. Harlem Heat

Body of the Match: There were two parts to this match; when Erik Watts was in the match it fell apart and was not good at all. When Taylor was in the match it was slightly better, especially when he was facing off against Booker T. Still a lot of punches and kicks though. I have to give Booker T favourite moment of the evening though as Taylor went for a Sunset Flip, but Booker T not only kicked out of the move, he kicked out and turned it into a Spinaroonie to boot!

Finishing Moments: In the finishing moments the Heat has isolated Erik Watts, and Taylor didn’t even try to interfere when Harlem Heat dropped him with the Heat Seeker and got the pin fall at 8:02. (59)

Nick Bockwickel joined Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan and first announced that due to the way their match ended in controversy at Slamboree, next week Johnny B Badd would receive a rematch with “Stunning” Steve Austin for the United States Heavyweight Championship. “Next, I would like to once again apologize to the fans for what we had to announce tonight, but we are looking towards a bright future, we are looking forward to the Clash. Upon taking the job as Commissioner one of the primary goals that I had, there was always the disparity, even when I was World Champion, that there was more than one World Champion. That is why at the Clash of the Champions we will have a match between the World International Champion and the Wold Heavyweight Champion to unify both belts into one.”

Match 4: ‘The Enforcer’ Arn Anderson vs. Diamond Dallas Page

Body of the Match: Inside the ring Anderson worked over the leg of Diamond Dallas Page the entire time, but again it was the story that was being told at the announcers table that I found a bit distracting. Heenan was at the table to begin with, and he and Tony talked about how Col Parker had attempted to recruit Arn Anderson and was quickly turned down. When Tony started to talk about the Four Horsemen, all of a sudden Heenan desperately had to run to the back to use ‘the facilities.’ Again not sure what is going on with that.

Finishing Moments: DDP went to go and pull Anderson up into a Diamond Clash, but instead Anderson pulled his legs out and locked on the Figure Four to get the submission victory at 10:54. (70)

A video played of Ray Traylor working out the the Guardian Angels in New York City, including clips of him helping out on the street, talking to the people and words from the founder Curtis Sliwa about the Guardian Angels program.

Match 5: Wahoo McDaniel vs. Vader

Body of the Match: Before the match began the announcers hyped up that The Guardian Angel would be in action next week, but also at Clash of the Champions when he faced Vader. The legendary Wahoo received a warm welcome from his hometown crowd, and even had a few moment s in the match where he managed to control with some hard chops, but most of the match went exactly the way you would expect with Vader dominating the older, savvy veteran.

Finishing Moments: Vader backed McDaniel up into the corner with some hard blows to the face, before backing up and running at him with a couple of Avalanche’s in the corner. McDaniel stumbled out of the corner into a short Clothesline, before Vader finished him off with a Running Splash off the ropes at 7:37. (71)

Up next Gene Okerlund interviewed Sting about the Unification match: “I know the little Stingers are upset that they didn’t get the blonde haired Champion that they thought they were going to get, but at Clash of the Champions their current blonde haired Champion is here and he’s going to unify our two World titles into one!”

Match 6: Scott Stud vs. Terry Funk

Body of the Match: This match was a backdrop to the feud between Terry Funk, the Stud Stable and the Rhodes family. Terry kept beating on Scott Stud and calling out to the camera and asking if the Rhodes were watching.

Finishing Moments: The end of the match saw Terry Funk drop Stud with a Piledriver, but pulled Stud up before the three count before locking in the Spinning Toe Hold at 7:43. (59)

After the match the Stud Stable made their way over to Gene Okerlund, with Meng quietly glaring in the background at Okerlund for the entire match. Funk took the opportunity to talk about how he was going to do the same thing to Dustin while his “egg-sucking dog of a father watched on.” Rob Parker then took the opportunity to let Johnny B Badd know that next week Steve Austin was going to wreck his pretty face on his way to retaining the US title.

Gene Okerlund was backstage with an irate Ric Flair: “why is everyone so upset that Hulk Hogan, that’s right I said his name if you want to sue me then go ahead, why is everyone so upset that Hogan isn’t coming to WCW? You ask worldwide, one name says Franchise on it in WCW and it’s Ric Flair. Hogan may be a big time player, but he didn’t want to come here, because he was afraid. He has never faced off against an Austin, or an Anderson, or a Steamboat, or a Flair, he has proved nothing! You want to talk about a big deal, lets talk about Clash of the Champions and the Unification match. There’s going to be ONE man here in WCW, one Champion, and that’s the “Nature Boy” Wooooooo!”

Match 7: WCW World Television Championship Match: Lord Steven Regal © vs. Larry Zbyszko

Body of the Match: Watching this match in its entirety I was even more impressed with the level of it as both men desperately wanted to win the match and it was evident in the way they dug deep. At one point Regal went for four or five different pin fall attempts with no move in between, he was just so desperate to get the pin fall and he could not believe that Larry had enough in the tank to keep kicking out.

Finish of the Match: The end came when Regal had a Sleeper locked on Larry Zbyszko, and Sir William got up on the ring apron to celebrate. Larry jumped up and kicked William off of the apron before falling back on Regal and adjusting his grip to become the NEW World Television Champion at 17:36.

My Thoughts: Having watched their match at Slamboree I think I enjoyed this one a bit better, I don’t know what it was about these two, but they had some really good chemistry that really brought the best out in Zybszko. (73)

As the show was wrapping up, Gene Okerlund caught up to the new TV Champion fresh from the ring. “Regal kept shooting off his mouth about me, and about this country, all I have to say is I did it your Lordship. I tell you something, the next time you come out here and you talk about me, you talk about the United States of America you do it with some respect!”

Overall Rating: 73 Still not sure if I prefer letter grades or trying to assign an arbitrary number with my ratings, so again I may continue to play around with things. This was a very interesting episode, as it is clear there are some plans that had been set in motion that they were following through with, but overall their direction had to take a big hit with Hogan not coming in. This episode seemed quite rushed, with some big names like "Stunning" Steve, the Rhodes, Brian Pillman etc not even making the show, while guys like Steve Keirn and Jean-Paul Levesque did make the show. I feel the next couple of weeks will look a lot like that while they figure out what the future of the company is going to be, I can only imagine what was going on in the background. But if the end result is more matches from ring general's like Ricky Steamboat and Arn Anderson, I'm certainly not going to complain!

I'm not planning on reviewing any of the various 'b-Shows' that WCW had at this time, but the one that seems somewhat interesting was the Main Event so I will always do a quick cliff notes version of it just in case anything significant does happen on it.

Main Event

Johnny B Badd had no time to celebrate as "Stunning" Steve rushed the ring and attacked Badd, before throwing him out of the ring and calling for his opponent to come out

Steve Austin made Frank Andersson submit at 10:26 with That’s a Wrap (70)

Rick Rude and Eric Bischoff previewed Saturday Night, talking about the Guardian Angel being in action as well as hyping the big United States Championship main event.

I loved your WCW 91 diary, and this one seems to be no different in quality. I'll certainly follow this. Best of luck, man.

Thank you so much, I definitely appreciate the fact that you were always there supporting me with that diary, I wish I had been able to get further ahead with it. The good news is a lot of the plans I had that I was most excited about I will be transferring over to this diary! To anyone who reads this, yourself included, I won't be posting episodes every couple of days like this, but I wanted to get this one out before I go on holiday's the next couple of days so the next installment should be out sometime on the weekend...if I don't get to distracted with NXT/Summerslam!

Things started off respectfully between the two men, and there was absolutely no mention of Hulk Hogan at all during it. Flair started to talk about once again being recognized as the man as he became the sole undisputed Champion, and that was when Sting cut him off and referred back to last week: “I heard you get quite passionate last week as you were talking about the great wrestlers in this company, and I’m sure it was a slight slip when you forgot to mention one name, the one wrestler who has always had your number, and that’s me Ric! Or have you forgot about a little thing called The Great American Bash 1990?” The two men were soon in each other’s faces, but before things could continue they were both interrupted by Vader and his manager Harley Race. Harley Race got right to the point and announced that Vader was out there to issue a challenge to which ever man emerged from Clash of the Champions as the undisputed Champion, and just to show he “deserved it, as if he didn’t already make a point earlier” Vader attacked both men. At first he had the clear advantage, but as Sting and Flair worked together, he eventually retreated from the ring and Saturday Night ended with Sting and Flair staring across at each other in the ring.</p><p> </p><p> Overall: While there was a couple matches this week that I felt brought the quality of the show down, overall I thought this was a better episode then last week even just a little bit. “Stunning” Steve and Johnny B Badd had a really good main event match, and the big ending with Vader challenging the winner seems to be setting up for the main event of Bash at the Beach, replacing what I’m sure would have been Hogan challenging the winner of the match at Clash of the Champions. <p>I like the idea of a WCW without any Hogan influence, you can keep up the "Southern" vibe without having to try moving into a bigger stage in the same way that Eric did in our universe. Something to me feels like you may have a huge debut up your sleeve somewhere, though.</p><p> </p><p>

Sting - <em>Without Hogan, there's no real reason for Flair to pick up the belt. So why not let Sting have a nice little title run? There's nothing that either side can lose from it.</em></p><p>

Steve Austin - <em>Badd comes up short. Austin could eventually be one of your top contenders, but for now he puts on a solid title defense.</em></p><p>

Nasty Boys - <em>Jack and Kevin are going to be feuding pretty soon I think, so take the titles from them and see what happens.</em></p><p>

Jean-Paul - <em>Time to start playing the game.</em></p><p>

Terry Funk - <em>This feud shall continue.</em></p><p>

Vader - <em>Vader moving past the Angel can step into title contention.</em></p>

It was clear pretty early on that the Champion had two co-existing strategies; to avoid the left hook and to work over Badd’s leg. At one point a desperate Badd caught Austin with the Tutti Fruiti and it sent Austin out of the ring. From there he flipped over the rope with the Badd Mood Sommersault plancha and that almost resulted in both of them being counted out. </p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Mach: The finish of the match saw “Stunning” Steve drop Johnny B Badd across the top rope with the Stun Gun, but as Badd bounced off of the top rope he managed to catch the Champion with the Tutti Fruiti and both men collapsed, with Badd landing on top for the three count! Well….at least he thought it was the three count, but Austin had put his foot across the bottom rope so referee Nick Patrick had to explain to Badd that the match wasn’t over. That allowed “Stunning” Steve to sneak up and catch Badd with a knee block, and then he dragged Johnny to the middle of the ring and locked on That’s a Wrap to get the submission victory at 18:16</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: I really liked the story told throughout this match as Austin kept going for the leg, and Johnny B Badd had to use his athleticism to counter that. Some of the moves he pulled out near the end probably shouldn’t have happened though as he should have been selling the leg still after getting worked over for most of the match. With that said, it was still the best match in their series and a great way to start the show. I’m giving it a 77.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenana were shown after the match and announced that due to delays in their flights the Nasty Boys would not be able to make it tonight and as such they would not be challenging for the Tag Team titles tonight. Back and forth the match went, but there’s no denying that Vader controlled most of the match, catching The Guardian Angel in the corner with a couple of Avalanches.</p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Mach: The finish of the match saw The Guardian Angel finally have Vader staggered after a series of body blows. He looked to the end the match with his trade mark Slam, but couldn’t get Vader up. At first he was able to block some of the blows, but soon he was defenseless and referee Randy Anderson had seen enough and called for the bell at 13:27.</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: I know, I know, it’s a Vader match so of course I thought it was great. There was an interesting story that was told as for most of the match Vader was actually dominant, and the announcers kept playing it up as if there was some sort of “mental hurdle” that was preventing The Guardian Angel from giving his best. Either way this was really good for a power match between two bigger men, and I liked it slightly better than the opener so I’m giving it at 78.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 3: World Television Championship: Larry Zbyszko© vs. Jean-Paul Levesque<p> </p><p> Body of the Match: It was his first match against a real opponent and JPL didn’t fare too poorly against the World Television Champion. He didn’t stop there though as he continued sSSSto punch away at the head of Larry Zbyszko while referee David Manning desperately tried to pull him off. </p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: This match almost seemed like a test to see how far JPL had developed, and he didn’t look out of place in the match, although there is definitely still room to grow. Nick Bockwinkel had offered to pick opponents but he had a better idea for his young protégé, opponents he could not prepare for….because he was issuing an open challenge! The fans were surprised when it was Sensuous Sherri who walked out from the back wearing a red and yellow outfit, and she announced that she had found her man. But not just one man, she had found two men who she was going to take all the way to the top, and oooooo, what men they were….they were the team of Booker T and Stevie Ray….Harlem Heat! The two teams had a pretty good match on Saturday Night, and this was no different with the teams spending a lot of time brawling. All throughout the match Kevin Sullivan could be heard yelling instructions at Cactus Jack who looked less than impressed by that, which was in stark contrast to Harlem Heat who gladly listened to whatever Sherri Martel had to, ahem, say in her very loud screeching voice. </p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Mach: The finish of the match saw Sherrie Martel distracting referee Mark Curtis, which allowed Harlem Heat to double team Jack, setting up for the Heat Seeker. Sullivan took advantage of the distraction to knock Booker T down and across the top turnbuckle, while Jack started to punch away at the head of Stevie Ray until he dropped him. One Double Arm DDT later and Cactus Jack pinned Stevie Ray at 7:41 to retain the WCW World Tag Team Championship</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: Alright so the Nasty Boys have been touring in Japan for NJPW this month, and were supposed to be back in time for this show but legitimately did have flight issues and that is why we got the match we got. With that said, I can’t say as I am all that disappointed. I know that Jack/Sullivan and the Nasty’s have had some good matches, but this match was pretty good in its own right. And it’s nice to see that Sherri got her men in Harlem Heat and I am intrigued to see where that goes. I actually thought we might see Sherri get partnered with Ric Flair or something, but who knows, maybe in a different universe. They keep teasing the tension between Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan, and at this point I’m not sure if it’s going to turn into a blood feud at some point, or if they are going to slowly become friends out of this. Stay tuned! </p><p> Rating: 74</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 5: Dustin Rhodes vs. Terry Funk<p> </p><p> Body of the Match: This was not the match I was hoping it would be, for some reason the two of them just didn’t perform as well as I expected and it left me with a poor taste in my mouth. Things started off the right way as they didn’t bother trying to wrestle each other, instead it turned into a brawl that quickly ended up outside the ring where Rhodes bounced Funk’s head off of the announcers table, before Funk replied by bouncing Rhodes head off of the ring post. Maybe that’s what the problem is, they had a couple of shots that looked dangerous throughout the match and it just looked odd to not have any blood comes from them. Whatever it was this match just didn’t deliver what I expected, but if you like kicks, punches, and bulldogs then this was the match for you.</p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Mach: Terry Funk made Dustin Rhodes submit at 17:35 with the Spinning Toe Hold after Bunkhouse Buck interfered, while Dusty Rhodes was trying to chase Col Parker out of the ringside area.</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: I’ve already said all I think I needed to say about this match, since it looks like feud is going to continue I can only hope that somehow the matches get better. Same could be said about the Armstrong Brothers actually. Everyone knows that Flair and Sting have great chemistry and have amazing history between the two of them. I also have to point out again that this match was set up with Hulk Hogan in mind, that whoever won this match would have been the person who had to take the fall for him. The match was a back and forth encounter that definitely gave the fans what they came for. At one point Sting had control after nailing three Clotheslines in a row , followed by a Hip Toss that caused Flair to roll right out of the ring The next moment ‘The Nature Boy’ takes over after Sting missed a Stinger Splash and Flair was able to start working on the leg. Fast forward and Sting is reversing out of the Figure Four, and catching Flair was he tried to go to the top turnbuckle and bringing him down with a Superplex. That allowed Sting to go for the Scorpion Deathlock, but Flair made it to the ropes. With each move both men looked more and more tired as it approached almost 30 minutes. </p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Match: The finish of the match saw Sting dive from the top turnbuckle looking for a Flying Splash on his downed opponent, but Flair got his knee’s up and Sting bounced off of them. While it hurt Flair a bit taking the brunt of the move on his knee’s, he was up first and he dragged Sting to the middle of the rope and locked on the Figure Four Leg Lock! The fans couldn’t believe it as it looked like Sting was going to submit…..AND THEN VADER ENTERED THE RING AND DROPPED DOWN ON RIC FLAIR WITH A SPLASH! Vader wasn’t done though as he climbed up and dropped a Splash onto the Sting as well, before taking turning attacking both men who desperately tried to get to their feet. The bell was ringing as The Guardian Angel came running down the aisle with his nightstick and slid into the ring….AND TURNED AND NAILED STING WITH THE NIGHTSTICK!! Everyone was stunned, Vader included, but as The Guardian Angel worked over Sting some more with the nightstick, one hard shot to the rib after the other, Vader turned back towards Flair who was on his feet and started to punch away in the corner. Finally the locker room had to empty to hold both men back and try to restore some order as Clash of the Champions went off the air.</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: Everything about this was epic! Yes, I’m annoyed that they hyped it as a “unification” match and then they took the cop out approach. At the same time it is hard to blame them since plans had to have come unraveled when things with Hogan fell through. The whole idea of a “unification” match happening on free TV, and not where they could make some extra money from Pay-Per-View was sort of weird in the first place. With that said, I think Sting and Flair went out of their way to have a great match knowing that the fans were going to be mad at the way it ended. With that said I was completely taken by surprise when The Guardian Angel turned on Sting, and the beat down was brutal enough that I think that alone turned the boo’s from the ending to boo’s at his actions. For the entire thing I’m going to give it a 92 and again this was just an awesome ending to the show.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Overall Thoughts: The Main Event delivered, although maybe no in the way it was supposed to, and both the United States and Tag Team title matches were good. The Vader/Guardian Angel match made more sense by the end of the show, but I was left feeling disappointed in the Terry Funk/Dustin Rhodes match as that was one I was really looking for. I’m going to give this Clash a 75, although I will admit part of that may have had to do with me getting over hyped for certain things that didn’t deliver. Definitely seek out the Main Event match though as it may have been the best Flair/Sting match to this point.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Pick 'Em Contest:<p> </p><p> So about the Nasty Boys.....I had originally scheduled the show for the 3rd Wednesday of the month as that was the only day they weren't touring with NJPW, but then I looked at a calendar of 1994 and moved it back to the 4th Wednesday to try and keep things in line, I believe this is something that you know about as well Beejus, and when I started the PPV realized I had screwed up. Arn Anderson quickly went on the attack going after Bunkhouse Buck, and eliminated him pretty quickly. Suddenly Meng rolled into the ring and came face to face with ‘The Enforcer.’ One Clothesline later and Arn was down and easily thrown out of the ring by Harlem Heat. Johnny B Badd looked like he desperately wanted one more shot at the US title as he was going after everyone, eliminating Terry Taylor, Alex Wright and the Armstrong Brothers leaving a final four of Harlem Heat, Brian Pillman and Johnny B Badd.</p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Match: The end of the match saw Harlem Heat team up to eliminate Johnny B Badd, before they went to work on Pillman. At one point Pillman was down against the ropes, and Stevie Ray ran at him, so Pillman dropped down and pulled the top rope down allowing Ray’s momentum to carry him out of the ring and to the floor. Ray climbed up on the ring apron and tried to pull Pillman out of the ring, when Johnny B Badd pulled him off of the ring apron and with one punch knocked Stevie Ray out. That left Pillman and Booker T to wrestle without interference. It looked like it was over when Booker T threw Brian over the top rope, and then turned around to do his trademark Spinaroonie, but Pillman had hung onto the top trope and came back into the ring with an Air Pillman. From there he picked Booker T up and threw him over the top rope to win the match at 14:32</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: Battle Royale’s are hard to rate, but this one at least had some storyline development included in it. Anderson quickly got rid of Bunkhouse Buck, only to be eliminated when Col Parker’s bodyguard finally got physically involved in something. At the end it almost looked like it was going to be Badd getting the victory, but instead we’re going to get a clash of the former Hollywood Blonde’s for the US title which should be a really good match! 73</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> After the match Gene Okerlund caught up to Brian Pillman who was excited about facing off against his former partner, “we never got to settle things the way I wanted to, but I can’t think of any better way of settling things then when I take that belt from around his waist!” That was enough to bring out “Stunning” Steve Austin and the two were soon face to face with Austin running his mouth, until finally Pillman just smirked and walked away leaving a frustrated Austin still standing there yelling at him.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 2: Frank Andersson vs. Jean-Paul Levesque<p> Body of the Match: Andersson actually controlled for the beginning of the match by taking Jean-Paul Levesque to the mat, but the undefeated JPL came back with a Spinebuster, before locking in a Reverse Indian Death Lock to work over the knee.</p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Match: After the knee work, JPL quickly pinned Frank Andersson at 4:35 following the Pedigree.</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: Another week, another victory for JPL, another alright match, but he still hasn’t had anything I’d call a good match. 55</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> After the match Jean-Paul Levesque grabbed microphone and stood in the front of the ring and reminded the fans that while he didn’t win at Clash of the Champions he still had not been pinned or made to submit, meaning his winning streak was still intact. “Rejoice, for you all are in the presence of greatness.” With that he dropped the microphone and did a bow in the middle of the ring.</p><p> </p><p> Jesse Ventura had an interview area set up in the middle of the ring for the very first “Ventural Report” as well as a security squad outside of the ring. He stood in the ring by himself with the microphone: “I promised the first Undisputed Champion for our first VR, but thanks to this man there is no Undisputed Champion. He is the man who had the biggest impact at Clash of the Champions…..this….is….Vader!” Of course Vader was not alone as Harley Race came out and did most of the speaking after Ventura asked about what happened at the Clash. “You heard what Ric Flair said, he is no true Champion, he was not willing to give a shot to the one, true top Contender in this company. Vader has beat up everyone who has stood in his way, there is no way he was going to the back of the line. Flair wasn’t willing to give him the shot he deserved, so we made sure that there wasn’t going to be an Undisputed Champion. This is all Flair’s fault, he has no one to blame but himself for the destruction that Vader unleashed last week.” Jesse Ventura followed that up with a question about Ray Traylor, to which Harley said he had no idea that he was going to come out at the end of the match like that, but he’s glad that Vader beat some sense into him. “What’s next now Vader, what do you want next?” Vader glared at Venura, before grabbing the microphone from him. “Is it not clear? I. Want. Flair!” With that Jesse Ventura introduced another guest “the World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair.” Out came an irate Ric Flair who had to be restrained from going after Vader, and he started to unleashed the collar of his shirt as he grabbed the microphone and quickly accepted the challenge, before throwing a punch at Vader and the fight was on! Jesse Ventura called his security guards into the ring to separate them before any damage could be done to his set.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 3: Rip Rogers vs. Tito Santana <p> Body of the Match: Tito Santana came out with the flag of Mexico proudly draped of his shoulders, and he stopped at the entrance to hold it open, before spinning around and walking down the aisle towards the rings. What I got was him showing the fans that there was something still left in the tank. Near the end of the match Bagwell actually was ahead as he hit a Crossbody, followed by a Neckbreaker, followed by a Hip toss which set up for the finish.</p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Match: Bagwell nailed the Fisherman’s Suplex and referee Jerry Calhoun dropped down to count the pin fall….when suddenly someone reached in to the ring from the outside and pulled Bagwell’s leg out from under him. Marcus Bagwell looked just as shocked, and that allowed Bob Orton Jr to roll him up, and get some feet on the ropes to get the pin fall at 12:34. </p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: Once again this was pretty good for Bagwell’s standards, it helps being shown around the ring by a veteran. On top of that there is just something about these two when they wrestle each other, it makes things better than it would be otherwise. Greg Valentine isn’t a big star by any means, but he’s another wrestler who has some skills that if he could pass on to the young generation coming up would be beneficial I imagine. 68</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> An angry Gene Okerlund interviewed the former Guardian Angel, now going by his real name of Ray Traylor and asked him “just what did you think you were doing when you attacked Sting like that, we don’t know when he will be able to wrestle again, are you proud of yourself?” An upbeat Ray Traylor said he was proud, because his eyes were finally opened “my mama didn’t raise no fool and I listened to what Harley Race had to say and I realized it was time for a change! It’s not like I’ve been having secret behind the door meetings with these two men.” “The Nature Boy” began the match against Paul Ordorff, a throwback to their singles match last week. After the two went back and forth, Arn Anderson was tagged into the match. At first he was in control, but soon after that Pretty Wonderful started to double team him, and took advantage of the fact that Arn Anderson had been already been through a bit of a beat down in the Battle Royale. Eventually he did manage to get a DDT on Paul Roma which allowed him to get over and tag out to Ric Flair which got a loud ovation. </p><p> </p><p> Finish of the Match: Pretty Wonderful had Flair in trouble, and were looking for a Spike Piledriver, made famous by Arn and his tag team partner Tully Blanchard as I recall, and Arn Anderson tried to get into the ring which distracted referee Nick Patrick, so even though Flair got out of the hold with a low blow to Paul Ordorff, all that did was allow Paul Roma to hit him with a foreign object. Finally Paul Ordorff picked Flair up and dropped him with a Piledriver to get the pin fall at 17:39</p><p> </p><p> My Thoughts: This was a formula tag team match, although I was glad to see the actual tag team get the victory after using some good ol’ fashioned tag team strategies like cutting off the ring….and cheating to win. At least I hope that is what they are going to be used for, because if they have been brought in to just hold those younger guys down I don’t see how this company can survive. Before the contract signing the Commissioner also announced that this would be the final time these two would meet for the title, as the loser would not be able to challenge the winner for as long as he was Champion. After the contract was signed Harley Race took some verbal shots at Ric Flair, before ‘Slick Ric’ grabbed the microphone and said “I may not be able to touch Vader….nothing said anything about you though,” and with that he punched Race right in the face and knocked him to the ground. This infuriated Austin who started to yell at him, while Steamboat responded he was just there to watch. Using the distraction to his advantage, Pillman waited for Austin to turn around before catching him with a Standing Dropkick that sent him flying through the ropes to the outside. Once again Austin was yelling at Steamboat, who backed up the ramp somewhat and raised his hands to indicate he wasn’t going to do anything. Austin got back into the ring, and Pillman ran towards him, causing Austin to drop right back out of the ring. Sarcastically, and a call back to their time as a team, Pillman climbed onto the middle ring rope and pantomimed filming Austin with an old fashioned camera. Austin called at referee Mickey Jay to force Pillman to give him some space to get into the ring, and as soon as Jay had Pillman in a vulnerable position Austin entered the ring and went right for him. The United States Champion did not let up as he had Pillman completely at his mercy as he backed him in a corner and kicked away at him, before choking him with his foot. Pulling Pillman to his feet, Austin sent him across the ring with an Irish Whip, and then ran at him, only to be caught with a Reverse Elbow. Pillman then chopped the Champ across the chest a couple of times, before Austin fired back with his own. “Flyin” Brian snapped off a DDT, before running off the ropes and looked to drop a Splash onto Austin, but Austin got his knee’s up to block it. “Stunning” Steve climbed up onto the turnbuckles and jumped off, just to be caught in the air with a Dropkick to the gut by Pillman. Both men came to their feet and Pillman attempted an Irish Whip, that Austin reversed to send Pillman off of the ropes. Whatever move Austin was going for was reversed as Pillman managed to catch him with a Spinning Headscissors Takedown. Pulling Austin up, Pillman threw him into the corner, and then climbed up to the turnbuckle and started to punch away at Austin’s head while the fan’s counted along. As Pillman got to nine, Austin suddenly pushed away from the ropes, and managed to drop Pillman across the top rope with a half heated Stun Gun! Quickly the Champion went for the pin, but they were too close to the ropes as Pillman managed to get his foot on the bottom rope. When referee Mickey Jay explained to Austin what happened, he dragged Pillman away from the ropes and went for another pin fall attempt only getting two. Getting to his feet Austin dropped a knee on Pillman, before going for another pin fall attempt, and again only managed to get two. Austin went to pull Pillman to his feet, only to get pulled down into a Cradle pinfall, but Austin kicked out of that. As they came to their feet Pillman went for a Crossbody, and the momentum carried both men over the top rope and crashing to the mat’s outside of the ring! After the commercial break Pillman was still on the floor, and Austin had rolled back into the ring to stop the ten count before rolling out and sent Pillman flying backwards into the guard rail. Rolling back into the ring Austin ran his mouth to the crowd while Pillman slowly crawled back towards the ring and pulled himself up onto the ring apron before rolling back into the ring. “Stunning” Steve helped him to his feet, and then very lazily raised him up into the air to drop him with a Suplex. He gestured it was over before going for the pin fall, but only got a two count. From there he climbed up onto the ring aprons and dropped an elbow across the back of Pillman who was on his hands and knee’s trying to get up. “Stunning” Steve climbed up and went for another one, but this time he was caught with a Dropkick! Firing away with Chops Pillman backed Austin into the corner, before spinning him around and climbing up on the turnbuckle….to connect with a Tornado DDT! With Austin down, Pillman quickly went to the outside of the ring looking to end the match with the Air Pillman. He was distracted though and started to yell at someone, whom the camera quickly revealed to be Sensous Sherri who had come down the ring ramp. The momentary distraction allowed Austin to recover enough that when Pillman did jump to the top rope, “Stunning” Steve pushed referee Mickey Jay into the ropes which dropped Pillman to the match. There Steve Austin interrupted saying he didn’t carry about a “battle of geriatric’s,” and that Steamboat can’t even begin to compete with him. “How about we put that claim to test tonight?” It was a challenge that Austin was hesitate to accept at first until Steamboat goaded him into “finding a tag team partner…that is if anyone is willing to team with you” for a tag team match, a challenge which Austin finally did accept.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 2: The Armstrong Brothers vs. The Nasty Boys <p> </p><p> Body of the Match: This was surprisingly a pretty good match, and while usually I would give a lot of credit for that to Brad Armstrong I have to be honest and admit that Knobb’s and Sag’s played their role to perfection. A lot of the match saw the Nasty Boys taking turns beating on Brian Armstrong, while drawing Brad Armstrong into the match when he shouldn’t be. Finally Brad Armstrong did tag into the match and manage to clear house, but after he tagged back out to his brother who was desperate to get back into the match to prove something it was all downhill. To make things even more difficult, Bunkhouse Buck did not come out alone as he was accompanied by the entirety of the Stud Stable. At one point when it looked like Dustin Rhodes was going to get the victory Terry Funk climbed up on the ring apron to distract the referee, so Dustin Rhodes knocked him off of the ring apron before going back to work. After a Piledriver it once again looked like the match was going to be over, but Meng pulled referee Mickey Jay right of the ring. In a normal situation Mickey Jay probably would have sent him to the back, but Meng intimidated him so Jay just climbed back into the ring. Just when it looked like the numbers game was going to guarantee a victory for Buck, Arn Anderson came out from the back with a steel chair and chased the Stud Stable off! The one that will smack his granny in the mouth for fifty cents. The one who will start a fight in the parking lot and bring it in the building. Now if I take this match on these conditions we may get hurt really bad, but I expect that. We may get fined a lot of money. We may get hurt permanent. In contrast to that Bagwell had begun the match by trying to shake hands with Steve Keirn, just to see Steve Keirn kick him in the gut and try to end things quickly with a DDT. And while Bobby Eaton gets a lot of the credit for that, Taylor actually managed to hold up his end of the match as well. The finish saw an overconfident Bobby Eaton knock Taylor down with a left hand, before climbing to the top rope and taunting the fans for far too long. They were going against two bigger men, but they used their speed and flying style to managed to control most of the match. Wasting no time, Steve Austin waited until Steamboat turned his back on him before attacking him from behind in the corner. Getting his knee wrapped around the rope Austin immediately concentrated on trying to damage Steamboat’s knee to prevent him from being able to go to the top rope. ‘The Dragon’ managed to fight his way out of the corner with some Chops, but that did not last long before Austin had managed to drop him on his back so that he could work over the knee some more. With his good leg Ricky sent the US Champion flying into the corner, before following up by WALKING all the way across the top rope while he held onto Austin’s hand before leaping off with a Chop to the shoulder. That immediately allowed Steamboat to begin to work over the arm of “Stunning” Steve with some of his trademark moves including the Hammerlock Slam. Austin tried to retaliate with some punches to the gut that slowed down Steamboat momentarily, before he was able to take control once more. He did back off when Austin went down in a weird way and starting clutching his knee, and asked for a time out. Referee Randy Anderson separated Steamboat, who did turn around to look at the fans, which was the opportunity Austin was waiting for as he sprung to his feet and ran right at ‘The Dragon.’ Fully expecting something that, Steamboat was ready and he actually spun around and used Austin’s moment to send him flying through the ropes to the outside. As “Stunning” Steve tried to regain his composure outside, Steamboat challenged him from inside the ring. Austin pulled him out of the ring and nailed him with his own Chop, but Steamboat fired back with a series of his own. Finally the US Champion ran away from away him, and Steamboat was forced to follow before Austin slid back into the ring. Ricky followed him back in and the two men bounced off of the ropes, and then down to the mat while the other jumped over them, before Steamboat finished that exchange off by getting a Sleeper on Austin. Austin ran towards the corner, and Steamboat pushed off his back and threw him towards the corner before rolling him up for a two count as he fell backwards out of the corner. From there Steamboat started to work Austin over with a wristlock, before both men came to their feet and Steamboat fired away with a chop, and then sent Austin off of the ropes with an Irish Whip and caught him with an Inverted Atomic Drop. ‘The Dragon’ only managed to get a two count, and he pulled Austin to his feet, just to have Austin lift him up on his shoulder, take a few steps forward and whiplash Steamboat back to the mat with a Double Leg Slam. Austin climbed onto the bottom turnbuckle and taunted the fans, before dropping off and bouncing off of the ropes to drop a knee on the back of Steamboat’s head. “Stunning” Steve proceeded to rub Steamboat’s face in the mat while looking out to the crowd. The United States Champion climbed to the second turnbuckle and jumped off and perfectly landed a knee to the back of Steamboat’s head, before climbing to his feet and began to mock Steamboat’s martial art’s moves, before he pulled Steamboat up and chopped away at him in the corner. Desperately Steamboat managed to trip up Austin, before sending him flying into the ring pole with a Slingshot, and then he pulled Austin down for a two count. Both men were tired and they started to fire away with chops and kicks, before Austin flipped Steamboat over with a Back Body Drop and gestured it was over. Austin pulled Steamboat to his feet and went to go and hit the Stun Gun….but Steamboat turned it into an Inside Cradle….one, two, three!! The two men circled before Orton suddenly tagged out to Greg Valentine eliciting boo’s from the fans. Bagwell remained distracted by Orton on the outside which allowed Valentine to take over right from the start. Soon he had Bagwell backed into the corner and was firing away with hard open handed Chops. Looking to perhaps end the match quickly Valentine proceeded to start working over the knee right away. After a couple of minutes of that Valentine went for the Figure Four Leg-Lock, but Bagwell turned that into a Small Package for a two count. With Valentine down Bagwell went to go and tag out, but Orton Jr ran into the ring and knocked The Patriot off of the apron and pulled Bagwell back to the middle of the ring. Valentine worked Bagwell over a bit more before tagging out to Bob Orton Jr. Orton began the match by dropping an elbow on the downed Bagwell. Pulling him up Orton Jr sent him off the ropes and caught a Powerslam, before locking on a Sleeperhold. Just when it looked liked Bagwell was going to pass out he got one last burst of energy and dropped Orton Jr with a Jawbreaker before finally being able to make the tag to The Patriot. Immediately The Patriot went on the offense catching Orton with a Dropkick, before sending Greg Valentine over with a Hip Toss when he ran into the ring when he wasn’t supposed to be in the ring. While The Patriot controlled the action in the ring Bagwell recovered on the outside, and finally The Patriot tagged him back in to allow Bagwell to face off against a weakened Bob Orton Jr. It looked like Bagwell was going to end it with the Yellow Jacket Suplex, but instead Orton reversed into a Small Package, and grabbed a fistful of tights where The Patriot could not see the cheating, and got the pin fall! </p><p> Finish of the Match: Bob Orton Jr pinned Marcus Alexander Bagwell at 8:17 with a fistful of tights</p><p> My Thoughts: This was your obvious tag team formula match of the evening, and as such at least the fans were mostly engaged even though it was a pretty paint by numbers match. When he went for another Santana instead turned it into a Side Headlock after some counter wrestling and much to the displeasure of Simmons. Lifting Santana up Simmons dropped him with a Belly to Back Suplex causing both men to start back at a neutral position. This time Simmons once again displayed his strength as he caught Santana off of the ropes with a Shoulder that dropped Santana to the mat. Once more they went through the same sequence, but this time Simmons put his head down to go for a Back Body Drop and Santana jumped over Simmons with a Leap Frog and continued off the ropes. As Simmons turned around Tito Santana caught him with a Flying Forearm and almost managed to get the three count! Waiting for Simmons to get up, Santana ran off the ropes and went for another Forearm but this time Simmons countered with a Spinebuster but was unable to go for the pin right away. By the time he did get the pin fall attempt he was only able to get a two count. Frustrated Simmons pulled Santana to his feet and through him to the ropes and distracted referee David Manning as Teddy Long kicked away at Tito Santana. Although to be fair the punches didn’t look like they had much effect besides annoying Tito Santana. Fired up Santana climbed back into the ring and walked right into a boot to the gut that doubled him over. Simmons pulled Santana up onto his shoulder to go for the Dominator but Santana slid off of his back and pulled Simmons down with a Backslide for the very close two! Tito climbed back to his feet and ran off the ropes and nailed Simmons with one more Flying Forearm!! But when he went for the pin fall he realized that David Manning was dealing with Teddy Long who had climbed onto the ring apron. Santana went over and Teddy Long jumped off the ring apron and climbed innocence as Tito yelled at him. It turned out that it was a huge mistake as Santana turned around right into a Dominator that did manage to end the match! </p><p> Finish of the Match: Ron Simmons pinned Tito Santana following a Dominator at 8:09</p><p> My Thoughts: This was perfectly acceptable wrestling as the two went back and forth and kept the fans involved without getting too excited as the first World title match of the evening was about to occur. 70</p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 4: WCW International World Heavyweight Championship: Sting© vs. “Rampage” Ray Traylor <p> Body of the Match: “Rampage” Ray Traylor was out first and had a big smile on his face as Sting walked out from the back and was noticeable that his ribs were wrapped up underneath the ring jacket he was wearing. That didn’t stop Sting from taking the fight right to Traylor as he climbed into the ring taking his ring jacket off, and then threw it right at Traylor before running at him and punching away at Traylor under the jacket and forced “Rampage” right into the corner. Backing up Sting went for a very early Stinger Splash, but Traylor had gotten the jacket off of his head and caught Sting with a blow to the ribs in midair that caused Sting to crumble. Traylor grabbed Sting and threw him shoulder first into the ring post to cause some further damage. Pulling Sting out of the corner Traylor sent him off the ropes before catching him with a Sidewalk Slam. Running off the ropes Traylor went for a Big Splash, but Sting rolled out of the way and Traylor crashed into the mat. Sting followed up with an Oklahoma Roll but only got a two count. As Traylor was slow to get up, Sting looked to end things quickly by going to the top rope and flying off looking for a Crossbody Block but Traylor caught him, walked around the ring before dropping straight down inflicting more punishment on Sting’s ribs. Pulling Sting to his feet Traylor sent him into the corner with an Irish Whip, before following up with a Body avalanche. Filled with distain, Traylor pushed Sting to the mat with a shove to the head. This time “Rampage” was able to connect with the Big Splash off of the ropes and went for a pin fall but only got a two count out of it. Ray pulled Sting to his feet and locked in an Abdominal Stretch; adding punches to the ribs to add further damage. It eventually turned into a reverse Bearhug as Traylor forced Sting to the ground. Referee Mickey Jay checked in with Sting to see if he was read to submit, and then to see if he had passed out from the pain, but Sting managed to fight his way back to his feet. Traylor sent him off the ropes and bent over for a Back Body Drop, but Sting went for a Sunset Flip instead, but couldn’t get Traylor to leave his feet. “Rampage” dropped down looking to squash Sting, but the Stinger moved out of the way! Sting ran off of the ropes and caught “Rampage” Ray Traylor with the One Handed Bulldog. Both men came to their feet and Sting managed to suck in enough air through his hurting ribs to get up into the air with a Dropkick that sent Traylor into the corner. Pausing only to soak in the cheers from the fans, Sting ran across the ring and caught Ray Traylor in the corner with a Stinger Splash! Grimacing in pain Sting backed up….and then nailed another Stinger Splash! The cheers were getting louder as Sting backed up in the corner and let out a howl…before racing across the ring and nailing a THIRD Stinger Splash!! Sting backed up, and Traylor stumbled forward, before collapsing onto his face. “Rampage” rolled out of the ring before Sting could go for the pin, and walked towards the timekeeper, throwing him out of the way so that he could grab the steel chair he was sitting on. Sting finally followed him outside, much to the protests of Mickey Jay, only to have Traylor catch him in the ribs with the edge of the steel chair. That dropped Sting to the ground, and now Mickey Jay was outside of the ring and yelling at “Rampage” Ray Traylor not to use the chair. Raising the chair high into the air, Traylor smiled before he smashed the steel chair down across the back of Sting. Even after Mickey Jay had called for the disqualification, Traylor continued to smash the steel chair across Sting’s back, before sliding it into the ring. Dragging Sting into the ring Traylor looked to finish Sting off for good as he dropped him down onto the flattened chair with the Rampage Slam. With Sting not moving, Traylor finally backed off as medical staff raced to the ring to check on Sting. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Sting won the match by disqualification when Ray Traylor brought a steel chair into the ring and used it on Sting at 13:05</p><p> My Thoughts: Just like Sting has always been able to have good matches against big man Vader , this was another good clash with a big opponent. The end with Traylor looking to inflict more damage to possibly make for an easier rematch also makes a lot of sense and is not something you see a lot of. 76</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Cactus Jack got a microphone and called out someone for a tag team title match….and it was these men who responded….</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/q6APJiV.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/ledMIC2.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 5: WCW World Tag Team Championship: Cactus Jack/Kevin Sullivan © vs. The Steiner Brothers <p> Body of the Match: After the shock of seeing The Steiner Brothers be the team to accept the challenge it was time to get down to business with Rick Steiner and Cactus Jack starting in the ring together. The two men came face to face and were running their mouths although the camera couldn’t pick up what they were saying. Jack became more and more intense with each word, before Rick Steiner finally backed up and looked to level Cactus with a blow to the head, but that blow had almost no effect so Rick threw another one that again had almost no impact. Now Jack was smacking himself in the head and asking for another one. This time Steiner nailed him with a Steinerline, and while Jack stumbled he still remained on his feet and called for another. Happy to oblige, Rick ran off the ropes and nailed Cactus Jack with a Running Steinerline backed up with all the frustration that Rick felt from not being able to take him off of his feet, and this time it was successful as Cactus went down in a heap. Rick let out some barks before turning around only to find out that Jack was back on his feet and now he was firing away with rights and lefts that backed Rick into the corner. A kick to the got caused Rick to the drop down to the mat, and Cactus retreated to the opposite corner before giving off a “bang, bang” and running across the ring. Now it was Rick who popped up quickly and intercepted Jack and sent him flying with a quick Suplex. Both wrestlers tagged out to their respective partners who circled each other, before locking up in the middle of the ring. Kevin Sullivan backed Scott up into a corner and gave him an open handed slap across the chest. Not impressed Steiner picked Sullivan up and switched positions before firing away with his own slap to the chest. Scott backed out so that Kevin could walk out of the corner, and the two locked up once more. This time Scott forced Sullivan downwards and the two exchanged some amateur wrestling like reversals on the mat as both men fought for dominance. It was Scott who unsurprisingly won that as he managed to get three pin fall attempts to Sullivan’s two. As both men came to their feet Sullivan caught Scott with a very un-scientific eye gouge, and before grabbing Scott by the head and dropping him with a DDT. Scott kicked out at two and Sullivan started to argue with referee Mark Curtis about the cadence of his count. He pulled Steiner to his feet, and Scott reversed positioning and tried to get a Belly to Belly Suplex, but Sullivan countered that with a Headbutt, and then a knee to the ribs. Sullivan grabbed Scott by the wrestling singlet and threw him through the ropes to the outside, before dropping out with him. Outside Kevin tried to bounce Scott’s head off of the ring steps, but Scott reversed and bounced Sullivan’s head off of the steps before rolling him back into the ring. Quickly Sullivan tagged out of the match and brought Cactus Jack back into the match. Fired up Scott quickly sent Jack into the corner with an Irish Whip and then as Jack bounced out of the corner he sent him flying with a Back Bodydrop. An Armdrag later, and Scott now had Cactus Jack on the ground and was trying to get him in an Armbar but Jack made it to the ropes. Showing some sportsmanship Scott Steiner backed up to allow Cactus Jack to climb to his feet. Six hundred pounds of men went flying over the top rope as Cactus ran at Scott and nailed him with the Clothesline over the top rope to the outside. Outside the ring Cactus Jack bounced Scott off of the guard rail, and then bounced his head off of the ring post, and then the table that the commentators were using before rolling him back into the ring. In the ring a discombobulated Scott Steiner fell victim to the a Double Arm DDT, but as Jack was about to get the pin fall Kevin Sullivan ran into the ring to block Rick Steiner from being able to break up the pin. That caused referee Mark Curtis to stop the count, and Rick Steiner did get into the ring to go after Kevin Sullivan and it broke down as all four men were fighting now. Cactus went to take Rick out of the ring with the Cactus Clothesline, but Rick moved out of the way and Jack ended up going over the ropes and the top and middle rope twisted and left Jack hanging above the ground. While Jack desperately tried to get out of that predicament Kevin Sullivan was quicly overwhelmed, and after a Steinerizer Scott Steiner was able top in Sullivan and there was new tag team Champions! </p><p> Finish of the Match: Scott Steiner pinned Kevin Sullivan at 13:12 to become the NEW WCW World Tag Team Championship</p><p> My Thoughts: The Steiner Brother’s return as a good surprise that really excited the fans, and then they proceeded to have a pretty good brawl, and in the end the true tag team won the match. With the Steiner’s as the Champions the tag team division should get a shot in the arm that is muchly needed. Meanwhile Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan actually appeared to be on the same page for the first time so maybe there is a rematch in the future? 80</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Kevin Sullivan helped Cactus Jack get free from the ropes, and then helped him to his feet with a pat on his back while the Steiner Brother’s celebrated with the belts</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 6: Jean-Paul Levesque vs. Jim Duggan<p> Body of the Match: JPL began the match by declaring that he had heard Jim Duggan was not actually cleared to wrestle and he demanded referee David Manning to begin a ten count since Duggan would not be showing up. Manning got to six before a hobbled Jim Duggan did make his way out from the back and into the ring chasing Jean-Paul away with his 2x4, before turning to give the fans a thumbs up and a loud “Hoooooooo.” As soon as Duggan had his back turned to him, JPL slid back into the ring and clipped Duggan’s knee taking him down as the match began. Levesque kicked away at the knee of Duggan while referee David Manning tried to pull him off. Levesque backed up, and then went right back to kicking at the knee. Finally he put Duggan’s knee on the bottom rope and dropped a knee across it, before backing off to mock the fans. Duggan used the ropes to pull himself up, and as JPL went to attack Duggan fought him up, before going for a Scoop Slam that caused Duggan to collapse to his knee’s. Once again Jean-Paul was in charge as he worked over the knee, before locking on the Inverted Indian Death Lock for a while, but it was not enough to get the submission victory. After that didn’t work Jean-Paul finally got fed up and he waited until Duggan was back on his feet before kicking him in the gut and dropping him with the Pedigree….but Duggan bounced right back to his feet. Levesque tried to beg off but Duggan punched him a few times, before sending him off of the ropes and catching him with an Atomic Drop. Technically it was an alright match though, but the finish really left a sour taste in my mouth. 63</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 7: Brian Pillman/Johnny B Badd vs. Harlem Heat<p> Body of the Match: Johnny B Badd began the match with Booker T, and began with a series of arm wringers before he tagged out to Pillman while maintaining a grip on Booker’s arm. Pillman went to the top turnbuckle and came off with a Double Axe Handle to the arm that Badd was holding. In the ring Pillman also worked over the arm with arm wringers, and then tagged out to Badd who also came off the top rope on Booker’s arm, before taking him over with a Suplex on the arm and locking in an Arm Bar. Both Stevie Ray and Sensuous Sherri were cheering Booker T on, and he did manage to get to his feet and broke Badd’s grip with an Irish Whip followed up by a Spinning Wheel kick that dropped Badd to his back. Booker T tagged out and Stevie Ray came into the match and proceeded to use his strength to work over Johnny B Badd. Ray picked Badd up for a Scoop Slam, only to have Badd turn it into a pin fall attempt. As both men came to their feet Johnny B Badd tagged out to Brian Pillman who came off the top rope with a Crossbody that did not work as Ray caught him in mid air, before slamming him to the mat. Pulling Pillman to his feet Ray proceeded to smash his head into the top turnbuckle, before throwing him through the ropes to the outside. Ray distracted referee Mark Curtis while Booker T pulled Pillman to his feet, and held him so that Sherri could smack Pillman across the face. Booker rolled Stevie Ray back into the ring, and he sent Pillman off of the ropes and caught him with a Military Press Slam on the way back before locking on a Chinlock. Ray continued to use his size advantage to keep Pillman down, even as the fans tried to give Pillman the strength to overcome it. Just when it looked like he was going to break free and gain some momentum, Sensuous Sherri grabbed him by the leg to stop his momentum. That angered Johnny B Badd who ran around the ring to argue with her, and she fired away with a slap. Badd had to be restrained by Mark Curtis, while in the ring Stevie Ray and Booker T combined to hit Pillman with the Heat Seeker. Mark Curtis rolled back into the ring and made the count, even though Booker T was not the legal man. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Booker T pinned Brian Pillman at 13:17 following a Heat Seeker</p><p> My Thoughts: This was a decent paint by the numbers tag team match, with Sherri having the expected fair share of inference and an impact on the finish. Both men came out with their standard wrestling outfits, but in stark contrast they had their hands taped up with the expectation of their fists being needed for this one. It began with Regal complaining that Randy Anderson did not do a thorough enough investigation of Larry Zbyszko for any foreign objects after Regal had undergone one himself. When Anderson was checking Zbyszko over, while Larry was annoyed at Regal, Lord Steven Regal ran over and attacked Zbyszko and knocked him down. The “Living Legend” climbed to his feet just to get taken over with a Suplex, followed by some crossarms to the face by Regal. Steven Regal backed up and then ran and kicked the Television Champion square in the face as he climbed to his feet. With a fistful of hair in his hand, Regal pulled Larry up, but Larry broke free and punched Regal in the gut, before firing away with some very hard punches to the head that backed Regal into the corner. Referee Randy Anderson could not interfere as Larry punched away, but Regal kicked him in the knee to stop that, and then drove the point of his elbow into the back of Larry’s head to stun him. Zbyszko fired back with a knee to the gut, before running off of the ropes and catching Regal with a Swinging Neckbreaker. Up next was a Piledriver, and Larry went for the pin fall attempt but only got a two count. Larry climbed to his feet and challenged Regal to get to his feet, and his Lordship took advantage of the no disqualification rule by getting a low blow in on Larry Zbyszko. Regan then applied an Abdominal Stretch, but reached out and grabbed the ropes to add on extra pressure, and again there was nothing Randy Anderson could do about it. Zybszko finally managed to use a reverse elbow to cause Regal to weaken the hold long enough that he was able to flip him over with a Hip Toss. Larry was not able to return to his feet right away and that allowed Regal to attack him with a kick to the back, and then he locked in a Surfboard and really yanked back looking to really damage Larry Zbyszko. Even as Regal tightened the hold, Larry would not submit, and finally Regal broke the hold and climbed to his feet and ordered Randy Anderson to check and see if he was injured. While Anderson did that, Regal walked over to the turnbuckle and removed something from the top turnbuckle and waited until Larry climbed to his feet before knocking him out. Randy Anderson didn’t see Regal slip the brass knuckles off his hand and place them into the rights of Larry, but he was there to count the three to give the victory to Lord Steven Regal and a guaranteed title shot! </p><p> Finish of the Match: Lord Steven Regal pinned Larry Zbyszko at 9:28 after using brass knuckles</p><p> My Thoughts: This was a surprising match between these two, and while it may have not been the best match I’ve ever seen, they put on a decent showing within the confines of the rule and made sure that it was more of a true “fight” feel then a “rasslin’” match. 70</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 9: Arn Anderson/Dustin Rhodes vs. Bunkhouse Buck/Terry Funk<p> Body of the Match: The four men were all standing in the ring yelling at each other, with referee Jerry Calhoun doing his best to prevent things from breaking down right away. Dustin desperately wanted to start the match, but Arn managed to talk him into agreeing to let ‘The Enforcer’ begin the match against Bunkhouse Buck. After some heated words, the two men locked up and Anderson won as he pushed Buck backwards. They locked up again and again Anderson won throwing Buck to the mat. One more lock up, and one more victory for Anderson, this time he sent Buck to his back right in front of Terry Funk and his corner. Bunkhouse Buck demanded that Anderson tag out to Dustin Rhodes, something which Anderson did after he surveyed the fans and received a positive response. Rhodes came in with a flurry of blows that backed Buck back up into his corner again. Now it was Dustin who was demanding a tag in, wanting to face off against one of his families oldest foes…and Terry Funk made the tag to enter into the match. Of course as soon as Rhodes went after him, Terry dropped out of the ring. Each time Funk tried to climb into the ring, Rhodes went to go and attack him just to have Funk drop off of the ring apron. Finally Rhodes got his hands on Funk and punched him right off of the ring apron and down across the guard railing. A disoriented Terry Funk almost punched Meng on the outside, but Col Parker turned him around and sent him back into the ring. Funk and Rhodes locked up in the ring, and Funk turned Rhodes around and put him up against the ropes before Chopping him across the chest. Funk picked Rhodes up and dropped him with a Slam, but then Rhodes popped up and picked him up and Slammed him on the mat, and then one for Bunkhouse Buck as well when he came into the ring. Dustin then picked Terry Funk up…AND DROPPED HIM OVER THE TOP ROPE TO THE FLOOR! ‘The Enforcer’ entered the ring and had Dustin’s back while the Stud Stable circled the ring. Finally Terry Funk managed to get back into the ring, just to have Dustin kick him and back him up into the corner. From there Rhodes flipped him over with a Snapmare and then bounced off of the ropes and dropped a knee on Funk’s head. Pulling Funk to his feet Rhodes locked on a Side Headlock, but Funk broke that with a Belly to Back Suplex. Still disoriented Funk climbed to his feet and tried to tag out to the wrong corner, before spnning around with a 180 and tagging out to Bunkhouse Buck. Buck sent Rhodes flying off of the ropes with an Irish Whip, and then went for a Clothesline that Rhodes ducked under. Dustin Rhodes went looking for a flying Forearm, but Buck dropped down and Rhodes went flying right out of the ring and rolled up the entrance way. Terry dropped off of the ring apron and kicked away at the Rhodes before rolling him back into the ring so that Buck could lock in a Chinlock. Arn Anderson tried to get the fans fired up while Terry Funk assisted Buck lock in an Abdominal Stretch. Funk climbed into the ring and together he and Buck worked Rhodes over, while referee Jerry Calhoun was trying to prevent Anderson from getting into the ring. Buck exited the ring and Terry Funk dropped Dustin Rhodes with a Hangman’s Neckbreaker. Terry looked to end the match with the Piledriver but he was too dazed to get the pin fall, and instead tagged out to Bunkhouse Buck. Once again both men were punching away at Dustin while Anderson was forced out of the ring. Rhodes managed to fight his way out and bashed both men’s heads together before tagging out to Arn Anderson who entered the ring to loud cheers….AND THEN DROPPED DUSTIN RHODES WITH A SPINEBUSTER!! The fans were in shock as Arn threw Buck onto Rhodes for the pin fall before leaving the ring and starting to walk to the back. In the ring the pin fall started with one….two….DUSTIN KICKED OUT! Buck pulled Dustin to his feet and sent him off of the ropes with a Clothesline, but this time Dustin did connect with a Flying Lariat! With the fans going crazy Dustin dropped Buck with a Running Bulldog and went for the pin fall. ONE….TWO….ARN PULLED DUSTIN OUT AND DROPPED HIM WITH A DDT OUTSIDE THE RING!! ‘The Enforcer’ rolled Dustin back into the ring while Terry Funk tagged himself back in and went for the pin fall…but again Dustin kicked out at two! Funk pulled Dustin to his feet and dropped him with a Piledriver and managed to finally get the pin fall. After the match Arn did return to the ring to put the boots to Dustin while the fans continued to boo loudly. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Terry Funk pinned Dustin Rhodes at 12:48</p><p> My Thoughts: This was all about the end of the match, the completely expected turn from Arn Anderson, but what a turn it was. It just did not look right to have Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson tagging together, and now ‘The Enforcer’ is a bad guy once more and Dustin Rhodes has NO allies against an overwhelming force….will be interesting to see who he convinces to side with him….and will they be able to be trusted? 71</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Match 10: WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Ric Flair © vs. Vader<p> Body of the Match: in a callback to their match at Superbrawl IV, Vader wasted no time starting the match as he ran towards Flair, just to have Flair move out of the way. This time Vader stopped his momentum when he got to the corner and when Flair spun Vader around it was just to get leveled by a Lariat. Picking Flair up Vader tossed him in the corner and got in a few body blows, before hitting him with an Avalanche. Doubled over by a kick to the gut, Flair was in perfect position for Vader to attempt to hit a Powerbomb but he was able to block that, and then dropped down and rolled out of the ring. Vader followed after him, but Flair managed to stop that by grabbing a steel chair and threatening to hit him with it. Not wanting to get in the middle of the battle that was going on, referee Nick Patrick started the ten count. Both men quickly had to roll into the ring and Flair was able to go on the offense first by kicking away at the head of Vader. With some Chops and a few punches Flair stunned Vader in the corner, before sending him across the ring with an Irish Whip that sent Vader flying over the top turnbuckle and landing on his feet on the ring apron. Flair ran across the ring to attack Vader, but Vader caught him with a Lariat from outside of the ring and sent Flair stumbling. With that Vader climbed to the top turnbuckle and flew through the air connecting with a Flying Clothesline that put Flair down for a two count. Vader climbed to his feet and dropped down on with Flair and went for another pin fall but got another two. Up next he dropped off of the ropes with a Pump Handle Splash and went for the pin fall and this time Flair got his foot on the bottom rope to stop the pin fall. Frustrated Vader grabbed Flair by the head and gave him two stiff shots to the head, before climbing to his feet and bouncing off of the ropes to drop onto Flair with a Splash for another two count. Pulling Flair to his feet, Vader sent HIM flying into the corner with an Irish Whip just to have Flair bounce over the ropes, but Vader caught him with a Clothesline that dropped Flair to the apron and then the ground. Vader distracted the referee while Harley Race kicked Flair outside the ring a couple of times before rolling him back into the ring. As Vader advanced on him Flair struggled to his feet, but he managed to finally respond with a couple of eye gouge’s before following up with a couple of Chops that caused Vader to stagger. Flair backed Vader up into the corner and climbed up onto the turnbuckle and started to punch away at the head of Vader. Finally Vader pushed Flair off and then ran him over with a Lariat, before climbing up onto the top turnbuckle and attempting a Moonsault. Flair moved out of the way….and Vader landed on his feet!! “The Nature Boy” was in shock and Vader was quick to take advantage of that by sending Flair out of the ring once more. This time Vader followed him out and waited until he was up against the post, before rushing at him and attempting to catch him between himself and the post…but Flair moved and Vader bounced off of the ring post! That allowed Flair to take over with Chops and punches, and he rolled Vader into the ring and went to work on the leg. It looked like it was going to be over with Ric Flair locked on the Figure Four but Harley Race climbed up onto the ring apron and had refree Nick Patrick distracted. Flair broke the hold and walked over and grabbed Race by the collar and punched him hard in the face. He did not let go of his grip and it looked like he was going to punch Race again, when Vader approached from behind and went to hit Flair from behind but when Flair moved Vader ended up colliding with Race. That almost dropped Vader, a hard knee clip from Flair was enough to definitely take him down, and then Flair went for the pin fall and with the referee out of position Flair managed to get his feet up on the ropes and that was enough to get the pin fall!! After the match Harley Race rolled into the ring and went after Flair, but Flair was able to catch him with Chops, before grabbing Race by the tie and punched him in the face a couple of times before throwing him towards Vader as he was climbing to his feet. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Ric Flair pinned Vader at 18:29 </p><p> My Thoughts: While this was definitely better then their Superbrawl match, it was nowhere close to the level of their Starrcade match, it just sort of existed with some decent action but lacking a thread to hold everything together. 78</p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Overall: Since I have began watching this was definitely the best show that WCW has put on, and I'm not just saying that because of how excited I am that Ricky Steamboat won his match. Yep, I know all about the hassles of booking the Nasty Boys in the early part of this mod <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Great show tg, I can't believe I had all that time and still forgot to make some predictions up!

In fact when the match did begin that is when it went downhill. I wouldn’t say the match was a complete bomb, but it was incredibly boring and even though the fans were excited they weren’t enough to make this match interesting. Booker T had control of the match until he went to the top and came flying off with the Heat Seeker dropkick, but now it was Badd who moved out of the way and Booker T crashed and burned. As Booker T came to his feet he fell victim to the Tutti Fruitti punch of doom and Badd went for the pin fall but Stevie Ray slid into the ring and attacked him. The end of the match saw Taylor go for a Sunset Flip, but Eaton rolled through and grabbed a fistful of tights to get the dirty victory. Bunkhouse Buck went to speak next but Anderson stopped him and said he didn’t join the Stud Stable to put up with any losers, he planned to lead the Stable to new, greater heights but he needed the “right horses” and Buck was not one of them. The fans in Greenville went crazy when Ric Flair made his way out from the back to defend the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. I will admit when they locked up it was crazy knowing how things would turn out; this was a clash of two of the best of their respective generations. Both men fought out of a Collar and Elbow tie up once, before Flair finally managed to overwhelm Austin and backed him up into the corner. Flair faked taking a free shot at Austin, but backed up with a “Woooooo” and let him out of the corner. They locked up again and this time Austin was the one who got Flair in the corner, and just when it looked like he was going to give a clean break he slapped Flair across the face. That drove ‘The Nature Boy’ into a fit of fury as he fired away with fists and then Chops that dropped Austin to his back, and each time he got back to his feet he got knocked back down by another Chop. Finally Steve Austin rolled out of the way and went over to mock some of the fans, just to have the Champion follow him out and wait for him to turn around to drop him with another Chop to the chest. The Champion rolled back into the ring to stop the count and waited for Steve Austin to get back into the ring. Austin rolled back I the ring and put his hands up, but as Flair went to do the same Austin kicked him in the gut, and then pulled his legs out from underneath him and climbed on top to punch away at Flair’s head a bit, before locking on a Headlock. For the next few minutes the two had took turns controlling the match before Flair took over with a thumb to the eye and started working over Austin’s leg. At one point Flair went for the Figure Four and Austin grabbed referee Mickey Jay who had gotten too close and threw him onto Flair to break up the hold. While Mickey was yelling at Austin and threatening disqualification Austin started to work over the leg of Flair, eventually locking on a Figure Four of his own! Painfully Flair pulled himself to the ropes to force the break, although Austin would not let go until the referee counted to four. Flair took Austin down and got his feet up on the ropes to try and get the pin fall but Mickey Jay stopped that count after seeing Flair’s feet up on the ropes. That didn’t stop Flair from working on Austin’s leg some more and it played right into the finish of the match as Austin went to lift Flair up for the Stun Gun just to have his knee go out, and Flair quickly slapped on the Figure Four to get the submission victory. After the match Austin snapped and started kicking the ropes hurting his knee some more while Flair celebrated in front of his fans….just to have Vader come out from the back at Harley Race’s directions and go right for Flair. Flair managed to hold Vader off until Austin got a cheap shot in before leaving the ring, and then Harley Race climbed into the ring and held Flair down while Vader bounced off the ropes and dropped onto him with a couple of Splash’s. Race then proceeded to choke Flair out and had to be dragged off by security as Saturday Night came to a chaotic ending. </p><p> Finish of the Match: Ric Flair made Steve Austin submit with the Figure Four Leglock at 17:31</p><p> My Thoughts: For some reason this just didn't click quite like I thought it would which is funny as Steve Austin right now is like a young version of Ric Flair. Maybe that was the problem and Flair didn't want to let Austin shine?</p><p> Or maybe this is still left over bitter feelings from the "A Flair for the Old" segment. Either way it was still a good Main Event, just not quite the epic one that was expected. 74</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Overall Rating: This was an overall good show, although it didn’t really feel like a home run go home show for Bash at the Beach. That was a really fun Saturday Night. Eaton vs. Steamboat for the US title next week should be really awesome, and I'm both surprised and not surprised at Buck getting kicked from the Stud Stable. Surprised because he is pretty synonymous with the group, but not surprised because in-game, he's kind of a detriment due to his low popularity, not very good stats, and potential time decline as well. Looks like Austin is back to the drawing board as he is now title-less. Good show!

WCW Saturday Night

8-06-94

Attendance: 9619

Location: Rochester Community War Memorial in Rochster, NY

Rating: 1.99 (-0.04)

The show began with Tony Schiavone, Gene Okerlund and Bobby Heenan being joined by Nick Bockwinkel who explained he was not at the previous show because he was busy getting contracts signed for some matches, including announcing that at Clash of the Champions there would be six man tag team match with the Stud Stable facing off against Dustin Rhodes and two partners of his choosing, which Bobby Heenan quickly pointed out there wasn’t anyone left for Dustin to team with! Before Nick could respond he was interrupted by “Stunning” Steve Austin who demanded his rematch for the United States Championship but the Commissioner was non-committal which annoyed Austin and he promised to “do something about it.”

Match 1: The Armstrong Brothers vs. Hack Meyers and The Rochester Roadblock

Body of the Match: Even though he was from the area The Rochester Roadblock did not receive cheers from the crowds, maybe because the fans could tell from the get go that he was not going to be winning this match. Although to be fair the was not the one who ended up being pinned as that honor went to Hack Meyers after The Armstrong Brother’s controlled most of the match.

Finish of the Match: Brian Armstrong pinned Hack Meyers after a DDT at 7:43

My Thoughts: This was a jobber match, and not a very good one at all The Roadblock was not a very good wrestler, and even if his role was to mostly stand there and have the Armstrong’s bounce off of him he couldn’t do a very good job of that either. 48

The Armstrong Brother’s tacked down Gene Okerlund because Brad Armstrong had some words for Steve Williams and Terry Gordy after the beating they had given Tim Horner, Brad’s former tag team partner, last week on Saturday Night. Armstrong agreed that winning was important but that he didn’t feel the post match beat down was needed. After they left Gene Okerlund finished what he was saying, namely that Ric Flair was not here tonight after being injured the previous week after Vader and Harley Race attacked him, but Flair promised he would be back next week!

Match 2: Rip Rogers vs. Tito Santana

Body of the Match: While Tito Santana was the more famous of the two competitors, these two men had actually been wrestling for about the same amount of time so it was a battle of two wily old veterans. Not that it was still a very good match, but at least it had that going for it. The end saw Tito Santana dive from the top turnbuckle with a Flying Forearm to get the pin fall.

Finish of the Match: Tito Santana pinned Rip Rogers at 13:23 following the Flying Forearm

My Thoughts: This match was probably longer then it needed to be for what we got from it, which is probably why I was not that impressed by it even though I like Tito.54

Gene Okerlund stood by with Bob Orton Jr and Greg Valentine who were there to brag about their victory at Bash at the Beach when Tito Santana stopped by on the way to the back to remind them that the whole world saw that they needed to cheat to win. They retorted by saying that at least they won, and it looked like things were going to get physical when Bagwell and The Patriot came out to join Santana and Orton Jr and Valentine backed down.

Match 3: Stars ‘n’ Stripes vs. Tex & Shanghai

Body of the Match: This was mostly a punch and kick match between these two teams, but it was more about the story as Bob Orton Jr and Greg Valentine had made their way slowly out from the back. That didn’t stop Bagwell from winning the match, but right after the match Bob Orton Jr and Greg Valentine slid into the ring to attack Bagwell and The Patriot but Tito Santana came running out from the back to chase them off.

Finish of the Match: Marcus Alexander Bagwell pinned Tex Slazenger at 8:12 after a Yellow Jacket Suplex

My Thoughts: As mentioned this match was all about the storyline as Tito has been thrown into the mix now against a very familiar foe in Greg Valentine. 52

Match 4: Lord Steven Regal vs. Rockin’ Rebel

Body of the Match: Larry Zbyszko made his way out to the commentator’s table to watch this match and this time the area native was cheered, and quite loudly as Rockin’ Rebel made his way out. Lord Steven Regal made a great show of indignation as referee Mark Curtis checked him for brass knucks, and then he attacked Rebel as he was not expecting it. The end of the match saw Regal pull brass knuckles out from one of the turnbuckles and deck Rockin’ Rebel while Curtis wasn’t looking and getting the pin fall. After the match Lord Steven Regal walked over to the commentator’s table, and slowly removed the brass knuckles from his tights and placed them down in front of Larry Zbyszko who had stood up and was fuming as Regal walked away without saying anything.

Finish of the Match: Steven Regal pinned Rockin’ Rebel at 8:11

My Thoughts: 63

A taped video of “Rampage” Ray Traylor was shown; he stated he was not at Saturday Night last week or this week because he had been suspended from action for his actions against Sting but he wasn’t done with Sting yet. He challenged Sting for one more title match at Clash of the Champions, and “this time No Disqualification if you are man enough to accept!”

A recap video from the Main Event showdown between Cactus Jack/Kevin Sullivan and the Nasty Boys was shown as well as Paul Orndorff’s announcement that Roma was injured and his promise of revenge against Cactus Jack.

Match 5: Rochester Street Fight: Cactus Jack/Kevin Sullivan vs. The Nasty Boys

Body of the Match: This match started off with chaos right from the onset as Jack and Sullivan met The Nasty Boys in the aisle way with fists and weapons. Kevin Sullivan and Sags paired off and started to fight through the crowd, while Jack and Knobs were fighting at the entrance, with Jack bouncing Knobb’s head off of scaffolding holding up the lights. In a neat effect the WCW crew pulled up split screens so that you could see the action on either side and not miss anything. At one point Sullivan was choking Sags out with some cord, while Jack had Knobbs bent over and smashed a steel chair across his back. From there Jack held Knobbs up so that Dave Sullivan could punch him in the guts. As things were winding down Sags and Sullivan had made their way to the ringside area while Cactus Jack looked to end the match by dropping Knobbs with a Piledriver, but instead referee Nick Patrick was pulled from the ring as Paul Orndroff slid into the ring and attacked Cactus Jack. Mr Wonderful took Jack down with a Clothesline, before following up with a Piledriver of his own. That allowed Brian Knobbs to get the cover, while Jerry Sags prevented Kevin Sullivan from breaking up the pin fall.

Finish of the Match: Brian Knobbs pinned Cactus Jack at 13:23

My Thoughts: This was a good fight, maybe not as good the PPV bouts but still pretty decent. Although of course it was the stuff that happened after the match that was more exciting. 79

After the match Paul Orndorff continued to attack Cactus Jack after the bell had rang, and finally Kevin Sullivan got back into the ring and Orndorff turned to fight him off….but Sullivan dropped down and rolled out of the ring before walking away leaving Paul to kick Jack in the corner a few times. Dave Sullivan tried to get Kevin to get back into the ring, but he just shrugged Dave off and Dave Sullivan finally rolled into the ring to get between Mr Wonderful and Cactus Jack.

A video on the WCW career of the Steiner Brother’s played, before the announcement that Rick and Scott would be at Saturday Night next week in their home state of Michigan!

Match 6: WCW United States Heavyweight Championship: Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat© vs. Bobby Eaton

Body of the Match: These two technicians actually started the match off a bit more violently then I was expecting as Eaton attacked Steamboat from behind, and then the two ended up outside of the ring and actually brawled into the crowd before ending up back in the ring for the match to really begin. Maybe the start of the match was too fast for the two men though as they started to slow things down and the fans did not seem to be as impressed as I was about these two having a technical spectacle. The end of the match saw Steamboat almost win with an O’Connor Roll, but Eaton kicked out and sent Steamboat towards Mickey Jay. The United States Champion stopped his momentum, and then he turned around just to eat a left fist that rocked Steamboat followed by a Swinging Neckbreaker. From there Bobby Eaton went to the top turnbuckle and went flying looking for the Alabama Jam, but ‘The Dragon’ rolled out of the way and Eaton crashed to the mat. From there Ricky went to the top turnbuckle and flew through the air with the Diving Crossbody and managed to pick up the victory and retain the title.

Finish of the Match: Ricky Steamboat defeated Bobby Eaton at 17:45 with the Diving Crossbody

My Thoughts: As mentioned the fans did not seem to care for this match; they had been so heated for so long but didn’t seem to want to give this match the time of day. Sadly it was a bit disappointing overall but at least things picked up after the match was over. 70

In celebration Ricky Steamboat climbed onto the second turnbuckle and raised the US Championship belt above his head when Steve Austin ran into the ring and attacked him from behind sending Steamboat over the ropes to the outside. “Stunning” Steve rolled out and attacked him further, before sending into into the guard rail. Austin grabbed the ring bell and nailed Steamboat in the head with it, before climbing to the top turnbuckle and dropping off looking to land right on Steamboat!! Frotunately Steamboat managed to throw himself out of the way and Austin crashed onto the guard rail. Before the two men could fight any further security ran out and separated them as Saturday Night ended in chaos for the second week in a row!

Overall Rating: While the Main Event match ended up being a bit of a disappointment the end of show angle between Steamboat and Austin MORE then made up for it and ended this show on an incredibly high note. Also the turn has finally been pulled it appears with Kevin Sullivan and Cactus Jack splitting up, things are definitely heating up in WCW. 76

Honestly Buck would have been gone even if he didn't have any issues just due to long term plans. As for Austin I think it's pretty clear he does NOT like being without a title....and what lengths will he go to in order to get one back??
