Favorite Bands Thread

Not sure if this has been posted before but I thought it would be a cool idea to see which bands people like and why. It could also spark some interesting discussion as well! I myself am a huge fan of Skillet. (as probably hinted at by my avatar :D) Just bought their new album and have been constantly playing it on the road. The diversity of the band is pretty amazing. Pulling off hard rock, pop rock, soft rock etc. The only quarrel I have with them is John using playback on the chorus of Whispers in the Dark. I noticed recently he actually started singing it live, but in a couple of very recent videos, it doesn't look like he's actually singing, so I assumed they recorded him singing the chorus and play it back during the song. While the words "dark" and "NO" don't overlap each other anymore, there's still no breaths taken during the chorus so I don't like to believe it but it's probably true. Anyways, my love for them has grown extremely in the past month or so. I've bought an excessive amount of merchandise :p and have listened to so much YouTube on them it's kinda ridiculous. Oh, and Jen Ledger is gorgeous. :D

Who is everyone's favorite band and why them? :)

Right now I'm really digging a few people so I'll just link some stuff with a genre tag and song title. I don't tend to have a favourite band. I just tend to drop in and out of stuff depending on mood and such.

If you were to ask me again tomorrow, I'd probably link a different set of songs. :p

Great thread idea Dave.

Not a fan of Skillet myself, they sound too much like Three Days Grace for my tastes. I've seen live clips though and they look fun to see live. So I wouldn't be opposed to checking out their show.

My favorite is hard to pinpoint. Music has been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.

The first band that ever had any sort of impact on me was Alice in Chains. I came from a very broken home, so having someone to relate to at a very young age did wonders for me. Sure, I wasn't dealing with heroin addiction, but there was quite a bit of messed up junk going on.

Then there's Butch Walker. He literally changed the way I listen to music. He was in a one hit wonder band in the 90s(

) that I never knew the name of. I loved the song and since this was before the internet took over the world, I really had no way of figuring out who it was. About 9 or so years ago a good friend shared the song on Facebook and it blew my mind. I figured out who he was and immediately bought every album he's ever released. Every album has a unique sound compared to his previous work. I've seen him in person twice. The first time was opening for Ryan Adams. It was just Butch with a bass drum and a guitar and he was more entertaining than a lot of full bands I've seen over the years. The second was a headlining show. He brought out the opening acts to do songs with him. Opened up about the recent death of his dad(which was a partial inspiration for his recently released album Afraid of Ghosts) and overall just had the best stage energy ever. He didn't need to be flashy or have explosions(which I love). It was just a great experience.

He doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves despite writing hit song after hit song for pop and poprock acts(Pink, Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco to name a few), but he's such a talented songwriter and musician.

I went way more into this than I intended haha

Then there's guys like Wednesday 13 who I've been following for so long and have been to so many shows that he knows me now and we chat at every show for quite awhile.

So I guess I narrowed it down to three, but the actual list is far longer.

<p>I listen to so much different music, it's not even funny. Looking at my last.fm profile, the last year I have listened a lot to Boards of Canada, Die Antwoord, Lamb of God, David Bowie, Deafheaven, Neko Case, Goat, Meshuggah and Run the Jewels, to name a few.</p><p> </p><p>

If I were to look over a longer period, I'd say Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Mogwai, Boris and the Knife are bands and artists that have stood the test of time.</p><p> </p><p>

I grew up listening mostly to hard rock - Motörhead, Ac/Dc, Iron Maiden and the like, and it took some time before I realized it was ok to listen to more than one type of music...</p>

All cracking stuff. Dig Lazarus Dig is one of my all time favourite albums.</p>

<p>I've been in punk rock bands for 17 years. Most of them kinda sucked. I got to play a show with Bill Manspeaker AS Green Jello... we were IN THE BAND for a night. It was a huge thrill and something I'll never forget, so forgive me for being biased when I say they are among my favorite bands of all time. I'm not bragging because believe me, we didnt earn the slot haha. Our singer (A HUGE green jello fan) met him years ago and the guy promised him a gig some day and years later came thru. Just a lucky break but a great night for me <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

My favorite bands of all-time are probably Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Rancid, Sublime, and The Ramones. Dont let me fool you into thinking I'm a hardcore punkrocker. I was raised early in life by pop music icons like Billy Joel, Elton John, Madonna, George Michael, etc. I still mostly listen to top 40 pop music haha. </p><p> </p><p>

I kinda dig Skillet. I generally hate that pop metal style but they stand out for whatever reason. I like most of what I've heard from them if im being honest.</p><p> </p><p>

Nick Cave is just awesome!</p><p> </p><p>

Fav hip hop artist is definitely RA The Rugged Man but his protege AFRO (All Flows Reach Out) is really climbing the list right now. He is just an intelligent young man and a brilliant lyricist.</p>

I have strange taste in music in that I am not loyal to one genre. I mean I love Genesis (The Phil Collins era, not so much when Peter Gabriel was the lead though I really like Peter's solo work) but then I could turn around and listen to NWA. I am oddly not into modern day Hip Hop but I love a lot of the older bands. Come to think of it, I am not into modern day music at all. I am not sure why that is the case, it could be because I hardly ever listen to the radio anymore and so I do not have access to a lot of the newer bands.

Off the top of my head here are some of the bands I like...

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, Squeeze, NWA, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, The Clash, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Run DMC, Toto, No Doubt, Buddy Holly and the Crickets. I mean I could go on but those are just a few.

For solo acts I like (Once again this is just off the top of my head) David Bowie, Bobby Darin, Charlie XCX (Which is odd because she has some Electronic music and that along with country music is a genre that I loathe.) and Selena Gomez (People give me crap for that all of the time but I truly think she is a good singer and I like her stuff. Or maybe it is because I think she's hot...or a combination of both of those things.)

Not in to any modern day music at all? That's a pretty bold statement, especially when you go onto mention being into Charlie XCX & Selena Gomez :p

I try to enjoy a huge variety of music, but I'm mostly a huge metalhead, my favorites include Metallica (pretty much required), Slayer, System of a Down, Dark Tranquility, Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, Korn, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Pantera, Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein. Though we'd be here all day if I listed them all.

I've also found that I keep going back to the cliche emo teen choices like Sum 41, Blink 182, Mindless Self Indulgence, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At the Disco.

I don't really have a favourite band. I like a lot of bands, then I stop liking them, then I start again! Currently my playlist has things from King Blues, KMFDM, Halestorm, Lacuna Coil, Seether, American Headcharge, Nightwish (when Tarja was lead singer), Stratovarious, Butcher Babies, Arch Enemy (with Alissa on vocals - didn't like them as much with Angela Gossow), Johnny Cash, Slipknot, Stone Sour, In This Moment, Beautiful Sin, Disturbed.... the list goes on. My mood dictates what I like to listen to usually, although for the most part I can listen to bands like Halestorm, Lacuna Coil and Butcher Babies in any mood. I really like a lot of metal and rock bands with female vocalists.

Haha. When you say "once worked with" did it turn out he was a serial killer with mother issues and he's now on death row/in prison for life! :D

<p>My favorite bands include:</p><p>

Anything with Mike Patton</p><p>

Poets of the Fall</p><p>

Katzenjammer</p><p>

The Dø</p><p>

Harvey Danger</p><p>

Skunk Anansie</p><p>

The Beatles</p><p>

David Bowie</p><p> </p><p>

I have a lot more go-to bands, and even my favorites probably rotate every once in a while. My musical tastes are fairly eclectic, and I'll listen to pretty much anything and enjoy it. I created a varied Spotify playlist that's (currently) about 132 hours long, I like to throw that on random and see where it takes me.</p>
