The year is 1994. WCW led by Eric Bischoff and fuelled by Ted Turner's vast moneybags are now seriously challenging Vince McMahon's WWF after having signed Hulk Hogan. There's a storm on the horizon, and war is coming...

Week 1, July 1994

Welcome to the first edition of the WCW Hotline!

-WCW Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff has consolidated total control of WCW, answering only to the board of TBS. He has brought in an outside consultant to advise on the future of the company.

-Among the things that have made it into WCW's business plan:

>Targeting high level performers from other companies with established value and offering them huge salaries to make the jump

>Boosting the emphasis on the tag team scene

>Bringing in young, good looking performers to fill out the midcard in an effort to make WCW seem cool with younger fans and women

>Working to grow the brand in the New England Tri-State areas without abandoning the southern traditions of WCW

>Japanese expansion

-The bit about "abandoning the southern traditions" is in direct contrast to the goals of Bischoff prior to these meetings with outside consultants. Insiders tell us that WCW has already targeted some old southern hands to reinvigorate WCW's traditional audience during this time of change.

-Obviously the big story with WCW right now is the arrival of Hulk Hogan and his upcoming match with Ric Flair at Bash at the Beach. Insiders tell us that Hogan is very nervous about being made to look foolish in that match, while at the same time the company is conscious of alienating the traditional audience by embarrassing Flair. It will be a tight rope for sure.

-There are rumors that members of the mid-card who didn't fit the future image of WCW in terms of workrate and attitude were allowed to explore options elsewhere while WCW tried to free up financial room for some big signings.

-Paul Roma isn't making any friends in WCW and it will be interesting to see how long he survives in the reshaped roster.

-There is a strong rumor that WCW is working overtime to put together a big show in Japan in either late July or early August. Right now the company is in talks with several organizations to try to line up an opponent for Hulk Hogan to be the featured event of the tour. We'll give you more on that as it develops.

Lots of interesting rumors in the dirtsheets this week:

- In an attempt to counter what Vince McMahon sees as an offensive move by WCW with their signing of Hulk Hogan, WWF will be shaking things up on their own - bringing in both new and old faces.

- There is talk about WWF bringing back Demolition to strengthen their perceived weak tag team scene.

- The Vince McMahon trial began on Tuesday. Jury selection and other "mundane" stuff will fill the first few days. The trial is expected to run up to five weeks and the fur won't begin to fly until the testimony begins. It's expected that Hulk Hogan will be a key witness for the prosecution in what should be one of the more interesting parts of the proceedings.

- Inspired by the very successful Super J Cup held in Japan earlier this year, WWF may be looking to create a lightweight division of their own. McMahon has always been known to favor big, strong wrestlers - but in light of the steroid scandal, in which McMahon currently stands trial, as well as the success of Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, McMahon is reportedly changing his mind about the smaller, pacier, more athletic wrestlers most prominently featured in Japan and Mexico.

- WWF will be introducing a series of cheaply-priced PPVs to fill in between the big five, bringing them up to a total of 12 PPVs per year. They will only be 2 hour long shows, effectively playing the role of the old Saturday Night Main Event specials or WCW's Clash of Champions. Issues will be developed on these shows to set up the more expensive PPVs. All of the regular PPVs will have their prices increased. WrestleMania next year costs $34.95, a record high price for wrestling PPVs.

- Sources close to Titan Towers are confirming that The Steiners will be brought back to WWF once their dates with NJPW are done.

- Tammy Lynn Sytch, known for managing Chris Candido in SMW, is reportedly being brought in to WWF as well to manage an incoming tag team. Whether this team is the aforementioned Steiners, Demolition or an as of yet unknown team is unclear. It has been confirmed however, that she will not be managing one of WWF's current teams.

- The Observer reported a bit on the first days of the Vince McMahon

trial. Amongst the most interesting bits were:

The defence claimed that McMahon never told anybody to use steroids, but the prosecution claimed that Rick Rude would testify that when he was headlining against Ultimate Warrior, McMahon told him to "get back on the juice" (Rude and his wife were trying to have a child at the time so he stopped using steroids).

The defence tried to paint Vince supplying Hogan with steroids as one friend sharing an experience with another, ignoring that there were illegalities involved.

Randy Culley (Moondog Rex), Tom Zenk, Terry Szopinski (Warlord), and Tully Blanchard testified. Blanchard admitted that he had used steroids and that he knew steroid use was pretty much the same in the NWA and the WWF during his prime.

Week 2, July 1994

News and Tidbits from WCW

-WCW has parted ways with veteran announcer Chris Cruise

-WCW has extended the contract of Shanghai Pierce

-WCW has signed Texas based announcer Scott Hudson, intending to use him in a variety of roles. Negotiations with Mike Tenay didn't get far.

-WCW has signed a young duo out of SMW, Chris Jericho and Lance Storm, to written contracts. The Canadian youngsters are expected to bring some youth and energy to the tag team scene in WCW. In addition to SMW, the duo have worked together in Canada and Japan.

-Continuing the youth movement, WCW has reached an exclusive agreement with Rob Van Dam. Van Dam has previously worked a few matches for WCW and has worked extensively in the Florida independent scene as well as touring with All Japan. Early word is that WCW sees him as a potential heel martial artist.

-Another duo that was signed is the team of Hercules Hernandez and Scott Norton. Known as The Jurassic Powers, the team is said to be a personal favorite of Eric Bischoff and should debut before the end of the month. Prior to signing with WCW, the team held the IWGP Tag Team Championship for several months in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

-WCW has extended the contract of Cactus Jack, signing him to an exclusive contract.

-There is no truth to the rumor going around that WCW attempted to re-sign Missy Hyatt and were rebuffed with an expletive filled tirade in which Missy Hyatt was alleged to have said she'd screw Buddy Rose before she worked for Eric Bischoff again. No truth whatsoever.

-Lastly, WCW has implemented an "open door" policy and will feature local talents at the majority of tapings going forward.

-WCW has signed deals for Saturday Night to be broadcast internationally on the following channels: TV Azteca (Mexico), J Sports (Japan), TNT UK (UK) and TSN (Canada.)

Rumor Mill

-Paul Roma is an ongoing nuisance backstage. Sources tell us that his constant meddling is leading to serious problems.

-In that same vein, veteran Paul Orndorff's tension with Hulk Hogan has turned into outright dislike apparently. Could the team of Pretty Wonderful be on the way out already?

-A whisper was heard backstage that WCW has closed in on a mega signing that will change the company's direction. Hard to imagine who that could be considering Hogan is already on board, but apparently this outsider is all but signed. We've been asking everywhere, but if anyone knows the identity they sure aren't telling.

-DDP has been grumbling about his contract to buddy Eric Bischoff of late. Rumor has it that he's demanding a big raise or he walks. Considering their friendship, hard to see that not getting worked out.

-The Studd Stable is rumored to grow over the coming weeks. Insiders expect Arn Anderson to stay true to form and turn on Dustin Rhodes at Bash at the Beach. Could it be more obvious?

-There continues to be a lot of industry curiosity surrounding the Hulk Hogan/Ric Flair main event. This is a dream match and those usually fail to live up to expectations. WCW has a lot riding on this one...

Around the World

-The World Wrestling Federation's RAW main event of Bret Hart defeating the 1-2-3 Kid scored well enough, but in general the feeling at WCW is that the WWF has become a second rate promotion.

-Speaking of that, the WWF is on a pretty aggressive signing spree. Just goes to show that they lack the talent base that WCW has currently. WCW is big game hunting while Vince McMahon is fishing in the kiddie pool.

-All Japan ace Mitsuharu Misawa suffered a Torn Meniscus and will be out of action for a full year. This will surely be a big blow to All Japan.

-CMLL has been surprisingly aggressive in signing retired Americans, even outbidding a big American promotion for Hiro Matsuda to be a road agent for the company.

-Memphis veteran Tony Falk herniated his back and will be out for a full year.

The show had several segments, including the main event, playing up the angle with Tatanka, Lex Luger and DiBiase - with Tatanka claiming Luger is teethering on betraying him and selling out to join DiBiase's Million Dollar Corporation, with DiBiase seemingly believing the same thing. - WWF's July PPV will reportedly be named WWF In Your House 1: Canadian Stampede, pretty much confirming that Bret Hart and Kid vs. Owen Hart and Neidhart will be the main event. And yes, it will be held in Alberta, Canada.

- As reported last week, WWF are planning to introduce a lightweight division with focus on high-flying maneuvers. We've been told that they'll introduce a new belt for the division along with a tournament to kick it off in the fall. Among the names thrown around for this new division are Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Psicosis, Hayabusa, Jushin Thunder Liger, The Great Sasuke, Rob Van Dam, Rey Misterio Jr., El Hijo del Santo, Jerry Lynn, Sabu and more. It is unsure how many of these they'll be able to get however, and recent reports have suggested that some of the names mentioned will likely be signing with WCW.

- To further strengthen their global appeal, WWF has arranged for Monday Night RAW to be aired in Japan, Mexico and Australia in addition to already airing in USA, Canada, Britain and Europe.

- It is reported that Todd Pettengrill has been dropped as interviewer, with the part instead being taken over by Randy Savage untill/if Vince McMahon can return.

Week 2, July 1994

News and Tidbits from WCW

-WCW has extended the contracts of Ron Simmons and Scott Stud.

-Marcus Alexander Bagwell was allowed to leave WCW as the company felt he was too green to bring anything to the table at this time.

-Chris Jericho and Lance Storm, an exciting young tag team known as Sudden Impact, have officially signed their exclusive contracts with WCW.

-WCW used local talents David Kash (known locally as Kid Kash) and Roadblock (aka Rochester Roadblock) at the latest tapings. Both were impressive for the night with Roadblock putting in two solid showings at the tapings.

Rumor Mill

-Paul Roma and Ric Flair are feuding behind the scenes and wrestlers are apparently picking sides. Naturally they'll sign with the Nature Boy, right?

-WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel is said to be strongly considering approving a WCW European Cup to be contested in...well...Europe in August. WCW has a strong contingent of British and European workers who would love the opportunity to win that cup. Keep an eye out for Alex Wright, a personal favorite of Ric Flair!

-Bobby Heenan has been telling people that he has an insurance policy to keep the belt on Flair and away from Hogan. What that could mean is anyone's guess.

-WCW President Eric Bischoff is considering splitting the tv tapings. The idea is to keep Saturday Night moving on the road while moving Main Event to a studio show held in Florida on a weekly basis.

-No movement on the Japanese special event that WCW executives seriously want to put together.

Around the World

-WWF's RAW was more of the same; a mediocre show headlined by a mediocre main event. Have to feel bad for the 13,000 people who showed up to watch Lex Luger and Diesel half-ass it to a double DQ. Hopefully they got a free taco out of it.

-Speaking of the WWF, rumor is that Randy Savage can't wait to jump to WCW when he gets a chance.

-Wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino has resurfaced with Jim Cornette's SMW

-A well respected wrestling news organization took a poll of fans around the world and absolutely none appeared to be interested in seeing more lightweights wrestle. One fan reportedly said "I don't want to see wrestlers that my son could beat up flip around the ring!" Brian Pillman however got strong marks in the poll.

- The local newspaper ran the following blurb last week. "Hulk Hogan, a pro wrestling star admired by millions of young fans, has publicly admitted for the first time that he took steroids for 13 years. 'I used steroids to get big,' Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) said yesterday during testimony in a Long Island, N.Y., courtroom. Hogan was called by the prosecution in the steroid conspiracy case against World Wrestling Federation president Vince McMahon, his former boss. 'I would go by the office and pick up the steroids along with my paycheck and fan mail,' Hogan said. The U.S. government banned steroids in 1991 for all but therapeutic uses. They can damage the liver, kidneys, testicles, heart and bones."

- This week in the Vince McMahon saga began with good news for the embattled WWF president, as the judge in his case dismissed all but the conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids charge against him. Most people that have talked about the case thought that was the most weakly established charge of the lot.

- The first lightweights (or cruiserweights, as they will be called) have been signed by WWF Eddie Guerrero and his once tag-team partner in Mexico, El Hijo del Santo. The latter is told to be given the americanized ringname The Saint, in order to connect with North American audiences.

- The Midnight Males were presented in WWF this week - but without Sunny. So seemingly, they're not the tag team she'll be managing.

- With Hulk Hogan returning in a grand nature to the pro-wrestling business, WWF champion Bret Hart has coincidentally had several personal interviews appear in print over the past few weeks. Some highlights from different pieces:

Hart is 37 years old, one of 12 children of Stu & Helen Hart. Seven of the eight Hart boys wrestled for a living.

"I wrestled freestyle in high school. Learned all the holds. It's not vital, you know. Big stars like Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior really couldn't wrestle. But it's a useful background."

He had trouble becoming proficient at interviews. "I used to watch myself on tape and I was so bad it'd make me squirm. I'd stumble over words - I was nervous, see - and my eyes would dart around. Then an idea came to me. Dark glasses. Behind them, I'd be more confident. And nobody could see my eyes. It worked. Now, if the producer needs 45 seconds, I give him 45 seconds. And it's a good 45 seconds. What I didn't expect was that the shades would become a trademark. When I go in the ring or make an appearance, I give a few sets away to kids."

About Hulk Hogan going to WCW. "To me, it's a sad pathetic ending for a guy who was a legend, who had a legacy with the WWF. I don't care what anybody says, to me, the WCW is a step down."

About Hogan vs. Ric Flair. "There's a lot of talk about Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair, this great match. The greatest match-up of all-time kind of stuff. It might have been the greatest match-up in some people's minds 15 years ago.[...] I think you're really going to see that Ric Flair is very limited in the ring. In my opinion, his best days were over long before he ever lost to me. And Hulk Hogan, I don't know if anyone's seen him now. I'm embarrassed for him. The guy used to be a hero to me. I'm embarrassed to see what he's become. It's like flogging a dead horse, the WCW thing. There will be some interest initially, but it'll wane fast."

Not sure how fair of a fight it is when one side has Flair, Hogan, Sting, Steamboat, and the Hollywood Blonds, and the other side has Bret Hart and a ton of egos the size of Texas. Of course not remembering to have a feud involved in the main event match makes matters worse.;) And if you lose Savage, it won't be a National Battle. It'll be a National rout.

It is funny that the only reported trouble in the locker room is with WCW though. Why are you keeping Roma anyway? A loud-mouth jobber-fodder should become an unemployed loud-mouth (and yes, Pretty Wonderful had tag title runs but they were horrible wrestlers).
