Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan: Ric Flair via shennanigans

Reason: Hogan may be figurehead of the company but we're way too early into the booking for any title changes

Sting vs DDP: Sting

Reason: DDP ain't anywhere near the popularity of Sting at this point, any sane man would have Sting win.

Steve Austin vs Ricky Steamboat: Austin

Reason: Unlike WCW in 1994, we know Austin's true worth.

The Guardian Angel vs Vader: Vader

Reason: Got to get him ready for that Dungeon of Doom angle right?

Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan vs Nasty Boys vs Pretty Wonderful: Nasty Boys

Reason: Jack & Sullivan were always a weird team, I've got money on the experienced Nasty Boys to go over.

Lord Steven Regal vs Johnny B. Badd: Johnny B.Badd

Reason: Really think Regal is going to win but I've got the corner of my OSW Boy!

Dustin Rhodes & Arn Anderson vs Terry Funk & Bunkhouse Buck: Rhodes & Anderson

Reason: I'm a massive Arn Anderson mark and besides, I presume the 4 horsemen are going to be making an appearance in the future.

Harlem Heat vs Bad Attitude: Harlem Heat

Reason: I genuinely don't know but I'm going to side with Heat because of Booker.

Bonus:

1) What is Bobby Heenan's "insurance policy?": Sid Vicious, knowing his preference for big guys and this is the most over big guy free agent at the time.

2) Who is the man in the mask and jacket that has been popping up during Ron Simmons matches?: Brian Pillman

In a match designed to warm up the crowd, Harlem Heat defeated Bad Attitude relatively quickly when Stevie Ray took care of Steve Keirn with a powers lam. Bad Attitude didn’t get much offense in at all, but Bobby Eaton looked solid as usual. The viewers at home likely noticed that the announcers spent very little time calling this match, instead focusing on the Hogan vs Flair main event later that evening. They even cut from the action multiple times to show Hogan fans in the crowd.

Ron Simmons says he wants the guy in the mask to get his butt to the ring right now and tell him what’s up!

Dustin Rhodes & Arn Anderson

VS

Bunkhouse Buck and Terry Funk w/ Col. Robert Parker

The Stud Stables comes to the ring first with Col. Robert Parker. Parker as arrogantly confident as ever. Rhodes and Double make their way to the ring next. Funk starts the match and there is some momentary confusion between Dustin and Arn about who will start for them. Ultimately Dustin takes the nod.

Bobby Heenan: Look at this Tony, I’ve said it for weeks, Arn Anderson hasn’t gotten involved one time with the Stud Stable. You can’t trust him! He’s going to sell out Dustin right here at Bash at the Beach!

As the match goes on, Dustin Rhodes is isolated in the ring. Funk and Buck frequently tag each other in and out and put a beating on the younger Dustin. At one point Arn charges to the middle of the ring only to be stopped by referee Nick Patrick. The distraction allows Col. Robert Parker to hold Dustin down while the others double team him. Dustin eventually frees himself and goes for the tag, but Arn turns his head to argue with Col. Robert Parker! Finally a tag is made and Arn rushes the ring. The crowd erupts when takes out Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck. Col. Robert Parker is shocked at ringside. Arn spits over the rope and hits him right in the face. Arn drops Buck with a DDT while Parker starts waving his arms frantically towards the backstage. Funk gets hit with a spine buster and Arn is going for the pinfall when suddenly Dick Murdoch and Dick Slater rush the ring and assault Rhodes and Double A!

Winners: Dustin Rhodes & Arn Anderson via DQ

With the bell ringing, Col. Robert Parker handcuffs Dustin Rhodes to the ropes while Funk, Buck, Rhodes and Slater begin a brutal assault on Arn Anderson. Parker gets on the mic and berates Arn, telling him that he had an opportunity to join the team. He says Arn made a BIG mistake turning down his offer, but Parker always has a backup plan. The Hardliners are two tough sons of bitches and they were more than happy to take my money! The brutal assault ends finally when referees and security break up the assault, but Arn is taken out via stretcher and ambulance, with Dustin Rhodes at his side.

Johnny B. Badd

In a fairly standard match, Steven Regal dispatched Johnny B. Badd via pinfall. Throughout the match, Regal seemed disgusted about even engaging with Badd. The highlight of the match came when Badd took a pouch of glitter and threw it at Steven Regal. An enraged Regal almost fell victim to a flash pin at this point, but escaped and rolled to the corner. When Badd came to the corner after him he took a shot from the title belt leading to a pinfall. Tony Schiavone is disgusted that the referee didn't see it.

In what amounted to a wild brawl, Jack and Sullivan retained their tag team titles when Kevin Sullivan got on top of Paul Orndorff’s pin attempt of Brian Knobbs. Dissension seemed obvious between Jack & Sullivan throughout the match as Jack repeatedly missed tag attempts with Kevin Sullivan. Dave Sullivan got involved at one point and accidently hit his brother when he tried to nail Paul Roma. Jack was outside the ring setting up a table and climbed onto the apron to stop Kevin from hitting his own brother. Kevin appeared to accidently hit Jack, knocking him backward and through the table! He then noticed Pretty Wonderful hit a double team move on Knobbs, and while Roma posed to the crowd he jumped on top of Orndorff’s pin attempt to retain the titles!

The Guardian Angel

VS

Vader w/ Harley Race

One of the highlights of the night saw Vader take on The Guardian Angel is a street fight. The match was pretty violent with multiple stiff bumps. The Guardian Angel gave Vader his toughest match in a long time, even managing to get Vader’s mask off at one and driving away with hammer fists. Neither man seemed to have any quit in him and Vader refused to go to the mat. After missing a massive clothesline attempt, Vader got caught in a bulldog by Angel! A 2 count sent Harley Race into a rage and he climbed into the ring and tried to nail Angel. To the crowds delight this led to a series of right hands by The Guardian Angel and then hard toss over the top rope! The distraction proved useful though as Vader managed to get the ring bell and slide back into the ring. When Angel turned around he got knocked out cold. Vader then power bombed the unconscious Guardian Angel twice before mercifully ending the match with a standing elbow drop and a pinfall.

Winner: Vader

Match Rating: B

Following the match, Vader continued his assault on Guardian Angel while Harley Race set up a table. Angel began fighting back out of nowhere but took a low blow from Race and then a stiff right hand from Vader. Vader then put Angel on the table and dropped on him with a Vader Bomb! Race and Vader left the ring laughing while Angel lay in a pile of wood dust.

VS

Ricky Steamboat

In what proved to be the second best match of the night, Ricky Steamboat managed to defeat Steve Austin for the WCW United States Championship!

Austin didn’t seem to take Steamboat seriously for most of the match, pointing and laughing at him after he would avoid a maneuver. Steamboat caught him in a series of arm drags that annoyed Austin and sent him into a tirade. As the match progressed Austin and Steamboat engaged in a technical masterpiece with reversals right and left. The match ended when Steamboat managed to hit a diving cross body on Austin that seemingly came out of nowhere. Austin tried to roll through it but failed to kick out, freeing himself just at the count of three.

Winner: And NEW WCW United States Champion, Ricky Steamboat!

Match Rating: B+

Following the match, Austin threw a tantrum in the ring, believing he got out of the pinfall before the hand hit the mat. The referee ignored him and handed the US title to Steamboat. Austin attacked Steamboat from behind and put the boots to him repeatedly before storming out of the ring.

Sting

VS

Diamond Dallas Page

Diamond Dallas Page and Sting worked a slower paced match clearly designed to bring the crowd back down after the barn burner that was Austin/Steamboat. DDP routinely tried to mock Sting’s mannerisms, but that backfired every time. In one spot, DDP got Sting into the corner and tried for a “Stinger Splash” of his own only to get drop kicked! This led to the finish as Sting locked in the Scorpion and DDP tapped out faster than you could blink your eyes!

Tony Schiavone: Here we go ladies and gentlemen! The greatest match in the history of our sport! Ric Flair! Hulk Hogan! It’s on!

Bobby Heenan: Finally! Ric Flair is going to end Hulkamania once and for all Tony! I’ve seen to it!

Tony: Bobby the fans will never forgive you if your meddling costs us the match of a lifetime!

Bobby: Oh those mouth breathers will accept anything!

This is a star studded event with Shaquille O’Neal in the crowd. He gets a big ovation from the Orlando faithful.

Ric Flair got a great reaction coming to the ring with Sensuous Sherri, only a smattering of boos could be heard. The WCW audience clearly loves him. The roof came off though when “American Made” blared through the arena and Hulk Hogan made his way to the ring with Jimmy Hart and Mr. T!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/Entrance.jpg

Hogan and Flair stood in the ring while Michael Buffer made the introductions for the title match and WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel looked on. Following the introductions, Hogan and Flair engaged in a stare down.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/Staredown.jpg

Tony: I’m getting goosebumps Bobby Heenan! Wow! I never thought I’d see the day, that stare down is a decade in the making! And you’ll only see it here in WCW!

The match went on for a good 30 minutes and pushed both men to their limits. Flair threw every trick in the book at Hogan, but Hogan regularly bounced back and got the upper hand, powered on the millions of Hulkamaniacs around the world. Flair managed to dump Hogan over the top rope during a clothesline attempt which put Hogan at the mercy of Sherri while Flair caught his breath. On the outside, Sherri tried to take out Hogan with a chair but was thwarted by Jimmy Hart!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/JimmySherri.jpg

The commotion proved useful for Flair though who stomped on Hogan’s head while the referee tried to end the fighting between Jimmy and Sherri. Flair picked up the chair Sherri had taken from her and whacked Hogan on the back with it multiple times. He rolled him back in the ring and put him in a sleeper hold. Hogan seemed to be passing out from the lack of air and exhaustion when suddenly the roaring crowd sent the power of Hulkamania raging back into the veins of the Immortal One giving Randy Anderson a heart attack when Hogan kept his arm up on the third attempt!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/HoganPower.jpg

Hogan managed to get to his feet and fight off Flair. He sent him into the turnbuckle and wailed away with right hands, much to the crowd’s delight. He whipped him across the ring causing Flair to flip onto the apron and Hogan to take him out with a clothesline! Sherri once again got involved, raking the back of Hogan as he tried to pull Flair in the ring. Jimmy Hart slid into the ring, grabbed Sherri by her hair and tried to throw her out, but Sherri hit Hart in the face with her shoe! Hart fell to the outside while Sherri barked at him. Hogan grabbed Sherri by the hair and the dress, he bent her over his knee and spanked her! The crowd roared as Sherri screamed! Finally Hogan tossed Sherri to the outside where Mr. T caught her and carried her to the back, screaming all the way as Jimmy Hart followed! All the distraction let Flair clip Hogan in the knee though and he got him to the mat. He caught his breath and then put Hogan in the figure four!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/FigureFour.jpg

As the crowd roared, Hogan fought through the pain and reversed the hold! Flair screamed in pain as Hogan climbed to his feet, releasing Flair. Flair, now on his knees, begged Hogan for mercy and was answered with a series of right hands! Hogan then picked Flair up, body slammed him and locked in a figure four of his own!

Tony: Amazing! We’re going to have a new champion!

Bobby: Not if I can help it!

Heenan left the announcer’s table and went to the apron, frantically waiving towards the back.

The crowd erupts when a familiar face makes his way from the back!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/Sid.jpg

Sid climbs into the ring and tosses referee Randy Anderson out of the ring, knocking him out cold. Sid stands motionless in the ring while Hogan lets go of the figure four. Hogan stands and the massive men have a face off. The crowd is at a fever pitch during this moment.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/HoganSid.jpg

Neither man is intimidated by each other, but Tony Schiavone is having an outright seizure at ringside. They begin going blow for blow with neither man seemingly getting an upper hand, until Flair hits Hogan with a low blow. Hogan goes down and Flair and Sid stomp away on Hogan while Heenan laughs.

Tony: This is despicable! Where are the referees! Security!

Heenan tosses Sid a pair of brass knuckles as Flair picks up the challenger, chopping away at him. Flair holds Hogan’s arms as Sid loads up the punch, but Hogan ducks and Sid takes out Flair! Bobby Heenan melts down at ringside as Hogan storms back to life!

He blocks a punch from Sid and gives him a right hand of his own! Sid drops the knuckles and Hogan picks them up. Sid lunges forward and gets a shot from the knuckles of his own! He flips over the rope to the floor below and Hogan tosses the knuckles away!

Referee Nick Patrick conveniently arrives after the end of this melee while Bobby Heenan goes insane at ringside. Flair slowly gets to his feet as Hogan turns around. He points at Flair and the crowd echoes a resounding “YOUUUUUUUU!” Hogan whips Flair into the ropes, hits him with the big boot and drops the leg!

The crowd counts along with Nick Patrick: 1! 2! 3!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/HoganPin.jpg

Tony: We have a new heavyweight champion of the world! Hulkamania is running wild in WCW!

Hulk Hogan is joined in the ring by Mr. T, Shaquille O’Neal and Jimmy Hart with fireworks erupting as he is handed the title, having won the Match of the Century!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/BATB/Celebration.jpg

An enraged Flair heads up the ramp way with Sid Vicious and a distraught Bobby Heenan as Bash at the Beach comes to a close.

Tony: Folks! Remember where you were tonight! Remember where you were when Hulk Hogan defeated The Nature Boy Ric Flair for the greatest prize in our business! Good night from Orlando ladies and gentlemen!

Winner: And NEW WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Hulk Hogan!

- Hottest news on the rumor mill is that sometime August, WWF will switch to a 2 hour format for Monday Night RAW. Given the amount of exciting talent they've signed recently, this move would make a lot of sense.

- Looking to bolster their star presence, WWF is supposedly planning on signing either Jake Roberts, Roddy Piper or The Ultimate Warrior in the near future.

- To kick off their new cruiserweight division, WWF will be holding a tournament in Japan in the beginning of September. The winner will receive both a tournament trophy and the new WWF World Cruiserweight Championship.

Week 4, July 1994

News and Tidbits from WCW

It was a banner week for World Championship Wrestling, capping off a highly successful month. WCW is on an upward trajectory. Now let's get to the news.

-Following the conclusion of Bash at the Beach, "veteran" Paul Roma was fired by WCW management. No reason was given. Paul Orndorff was given a brief vacation while WCW tries to re-think his future.

-In addition to Roma, WCW has parted ways with road agent Pez Whatley and enhancement talent Joey Maggs. The door is open for both to return at a later date.

-Turner executives were THRILLED with the 225 thousand or so buys for Bash at the Beach, the highest in company history.

-Long time veteran Bob Armstrong has joined WCW as a road agent, taking Whatley's place.

-The big news after Bash at the Beach was the signing of Davey Boy Smith. It's not clear how WCW managed to keep that under wraps, but rumor is that Smith was hotly pursued by both WCW and the WWF, opting to be a big fish in a big pond with WCW.

-A big part of that signing is WCW's planned expansion in Europe and the UK. Already WCW has announced a European cup and has signed various broadcasting agreements to show the event. The current plan is for the event to be show on TBS in the United States and on PPV elsewhere.

-If that wasn't enough excitement on the international front, WCW has also announced that the Japanese supershow is on for August! The event will be known as "WCW World in Japan" and will feature a wide variety of Japanese and WCW talent.

Rumor Mill

-WCW has been in talks with Terry Gordy and Steve Williams, hot off an impressive run in All Japan. Gordy currently has a broken wrist so it's unclear whether the timing is right.

-Harlem Heat have allegedly worked their final dates with WCW and have been allowed to leave the company.

-It's unclear whether Diamond Dallas Page is really out with WCW or if he's just going to get repackaged. The rumor is that members of the executive committee feel he can't draw looking like "Jersey Trash" and have asked him to go through a repackaging. We'll see what comes of that.

-Dusty Rhodes is giddy as a school girl about something. No one can figure out what it is.

-The Stud Stable expanded quite a bit with the additions of Dick Slater and Dick Murdoch. The pair didn't do themselves any favors with management however after Murdoch showed up drunk to the television tapings following the pay-per-view. Their re-debut with WCW didn't go all that well obviously. There are rumors that some in the company are already calling for Murdoch to be let go.

-Dustin Rhodes vs Hulk Hogan for the title? That's what a lot of people in the building are saying. Is that why Dusty is so excited?

-LLoyds of London allegedly kicked a few guys off their payroll over the past few weeks.

-Is Randy Savage on his way to WCW? There is talk that WCW executives are already planning advertisements for the Mega Power reunion at Fall Brawl 1994. We haven't been able to confirm anything, but of course that rumor just won't die.

-WCW allegedly wanted Curt Hennig to come in to work with Flair at Bash at the Beach but Hennig had legal issues with the WWF he couldn't work out.

-Bunkhouse Buck may be a solid worker, but a lot of the boys in the back are expressing a lack of faith in his ability to bring anything to the company.

Around the World

-The WWF is main eventing a pay-per-view with the 1-2-3 Kid. Think about that.

-We're hearing that Vince McMahon is none too happy with his management after multiple weeks of lackluster television. What did he expect with a fake Undertaker story line?

-A little birdie inside the WWF offices says that Vince is high on Kwang the Conqueror and there is a lot of talk of him working a program with Bret Hart. Ha! That will fix those low show ratings for sure!
