<p>New Japan Cup Night 1 results!</p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>New Japan Cup Night 1 results!</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> by </span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>Dean</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> - </span><span style="color:#000000;"><em>3/3/17</em></span></div></p><p> </p><p> For over 40 years, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has held a show at the Ota Ward Gymnasium in early March to commemorate the first ever NJPW show that was held in that venue back on March 6th, 1972. This year was no different. The first round of the New Japan Cup is complete, and as in years past the fans were shocked by some big upsets and treated to a particularly great match in the semi-main event of the evening.</p><p> </p><p> The first match set the tone of the night, as YOSHI-HASHI used the Karma (the Pumphandle Half Nelson Driver he's been using as of late) to upset "The Unchained Gorilla" Togi Makabe. YOSHI-HASHI has been picking up more and more wins recently, and he may be able to carry this success over to the second round.</p><p> </p><p> SANADA added YOSHITATSU to the growing list of NJPW wrestlers that have tapped out to the Skull End. YOSHITATSU looked good and had the fans' support. Many were happy to see that he could still compete on such a high level.</p><p> </p><p> Hirooki Goto took a page out of Toru Yano's playbook, using his Goto Ni Shiki (a Modified Arm Wrench Inside Cradle) to pin Yujiro Takahashi in a very short contest.</p><p> </p><p> Goto's fellow IWGP Tag Team Champion Tomohiro Ishii was not as lucky, as he lost to Tomoaki Honma in a match that had trouble living up to their previous contests. After the match, Honma pointed to Ishii's IWGP Tag Team Title belt, indicating he wanted a chance to recapture the championship he briefly held with Togi Makabe at the beginning of 2016.</p><p> </p><p> Ishii was not the only champion to be pinned, as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA was beaten by Will Ospreay. Ospreay has already had two shots at the Jr. Heavyweight Title in his brief time in NJPW, the first being his NJPW debut and the second after he won the Best of the Super Jr. tournament. However, considering this is the first time Ospreay has actually pinned KUSHIDA, we could very well see Ospreay challenge for the title once again.</p><p> </p><p> First round action continued after intermission as Michael Elgin defeated Bad Luck Fale. As in last year's match, Elgin wasn't able to lift Fale for the Elgin Bomb, but used a vicious lariat and followed it with the Big Mike Fly Flow, the move he adopted from his friend Hiroshi Tanahashi.</p><p> </p><p> In another contest that many fans would consider an upset, Hiroyoshi Tenzan pinned EVIL. This certainly could be Tenzan's last New Japan Cup, and the fans' encouragement enabled his fighting spirit. As with Honma's victory, Tenzan's may grant him a shot at EVIL's NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title somewhere down the line.</p><p> </p><p> The semi-main event was the best match of the night, as Kenny Omega beat Yuji Nagata in a great contest that definitely surpassed their G1 Climax bout. After seeing a member of the Third Generation win in the previous match, many fans were rooting for Nagata to advance and he came very close on a few occasions. Omega narrowly escaped an attempted Backdrop Hold, and hit a devastating One-Winged Angel for the win.</p><p> </p><p> In the main event, Hiroshi Tanahashi emerged victorious over Satoshi Kojima, putting an end to the Third Generation's success on the night. Kojima gave it his all, but was not able to hit his famous Lariat, as Tanahashi countered it into a Sling Blade and used the High Fly Flow to score the pinfall. The night ended with Tanahashi promising to win the New Japan Cup and playing his air guitar to a roaring crowd.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/watchxyoxface/njpwbanner.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>NJPW "New Japan Cup 2017", 3/3/17</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"> (TV Asahi ch.2/NJPW World)</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Ota Ward Gymnasium</strong></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> 4,010 fans</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"> - Super No Vacancy</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Show rating: </strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#32CD32;"><strong>B+</strong></span></span></div></p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"></p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/a4iHpyn.jpg</span><span>http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/watchxyoxface/75vs.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/ZjYjgks.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> <span style="color:#000000;">1. </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>New Japan Cup - Round 1</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;">: YOSHI-HASHI defeated Togi Makabe </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>(8:41)</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"> with the Karma. GBH challenging for the tag belts? Tenzan and some other New Japan Dads fighting for the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title? Then you have Ospreay potentially getting a rematch. Plus a stacked Round 2 with Goto, Tenzan, SANADA, Tanahashi, Honma, YOSHI-HASHI, Elgin and Omega. I'm going to post the full card for Night 2 next.</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> Moreover, I noticed a couple of people threw my name in the mix for Real World Diary of the Month for October, and I can't express how grateful I am for that. Knowing that there are people out there reading and enjoying this (heck, even if it was just ONE person lol) is enough to motivate me to make sure I regularly update and play. I love New Japan and that certainly helps, and don't watch too much wrestling outside of NJPW, which gives me some extra free time to post and play. Thanks again for all the shout-outs. Now if I could only find someone to cut those tournament logos for me...</span></div></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/l3Mucxl.png</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Predictions</span></strong></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> Dr_Avalanche: 6 of 9 (Plus the bonus! I didn't have Toru Yano to score the yearly low blow to roll up win over someone big, so had to come up with some different strategies. I figured Tenzan could get one of those "career almost over, fans motivate him" wins like he got in G1. Or sometimes Guy A just shows up after Guy B wins a title match and says he's next. It is simple formula and can get predictable, but that's just how NJPW operates.</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="Rateddc" data-cite="Rateddc" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42721" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><span style="color:#000000;">2. The absence of Yano really left me in a tough spot and I struggled on deciding who I could fit into the last slot. It could have been Manabu Nakanishi or Tama Tonga, and in retrospect I think Nakanishi would have made more sense. But hey, why not throw YOSHITATSU a bone. Interesting trivia - he was last in the Cup in 2006, where he lost to Ryouji Sai of ZERO 1 fame.</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> 3. Shh! Don't give away my plans! </span><img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><span style="color:#000000;"> However, I think one of my (very) long-term goals is to figure out some way to give Goto the belt, as I am a big fan of his and would like to see him finally win it. On the other hand, this would be his </span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>fourth</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"> Cup win, and only Tanahashi and Nagata even have more than one (both won twice). You'll just have to wait and see...</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> 8. Definitely, but it is his first one ever. If you don't count the first Cup in 2005, only Giant Bernard, Kazuchika Okada and Kota Ibushi have won it their first time in the tournament. Plus, Bernard is still the only gaijin to win. Tanahashi hasn't won since 2008, which is 9 years from this point. Tenzan never won, SANADA never won, and Elgin has only been in once before. Who knows, could Honma Kokeshi his way to a IWGP Heavyweight Title shot?</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> 9. I was let down by this not being an A, but I recently realized that matches have to be over 20 minutes to have their "in-ring" rating score higher than B+. I thought about having Tanahashi drop out the first round (as he has the last two years - 2016 to Fale and 2015 to Yano), but after his loss to Naito I wanted to see him succeed a bit more.</span></div></p>

New Japan Cup Night 2 card!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">New Japan Cup Night 2 card! by Dean - 3/4/17</div>

The full card for tonight's New Japan Cup show at Korakuen Hall has been posted, and it will feature the four second round matches as well as some intriguing undercard tag bouts.

In the first of the Round 2 matches, SANADA will take on Hirooki Goto. These two have met only once before, during last year's G1 Climax. SANADA won that match with the Rounding Body Press, a move he uses in tribute to his mentor and NJPW legend Keiji Muto. Does SANADA have Goto's number, or will Goto once again find himself succeeding in the New Japan Cup?

Michael Elgin will face Hiroyoshi Tenzan in a rematch of their first round match from last year's Cup. Tenzan pulled off what some would call an upset against EVIL, while Elgin advanced by defeating Bad Luck Fale. These two are some of the hardest hitters in NJPW, and this match is sure to leave both men battered and bruised.

In another G1 Climax rematch, "Mr. Kokeshi" Tomoaki Honma will challenge "The Cleaner" Kenny Omega. Omega defeated Honma last July, but Honma has found success as of late. Omega may be the odds-on favorite, but Honma already has one upset under his belt, and came very close to beating Omega in the G1.

The night's main event will see YOSHI-HASHI face Hiroshi Tanahashi in what is arguably the biggest match of YOSHI-HASHI's career. These two squared off once before in a single contest, as Tanahashi defeated YOSHI-HASHI in December of 2013 at a "Road to Tokyo Dome" show in Korakuen Hall. A little over three years later, YOSHI-HASHI will have the chance to defeat "The Ace of the Universe" and pick up what would undeniably be the biggest win of his career.

Tune in to Samurai! TV or NJPW World to catch tonight's New Japan Cup action live from Korakuen Hall!

New to this. Let's see how it goes. :)

NJPW "New Japan Cup 2017", 3/4/17 (Samurai! TV/NJPW World)

Tokyo Korakuen Hall

1. Ryusuke Taguchi & Teruaki Kanemitsu vs. David Finlay & Hirai Kawato

2. YOSHITATSU, Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask vs. Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi & BONE SOLDIER

comments: There's three heavyweights on Team BULLET CLUB, so this should be an easy one on paper. There might be some kind of DQ, though. TATSU's such a geek... yet I can see him on the win column on at least some of these rather meaningless matches.

3. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, BUSHI & Kamaitachi vs. Satoshi Kojima, Katsuyori Shibata, Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi

comments: With two Juniors on LIJ, Naito might get a new challenger (Shibata!) here. He's IC champion, I guess. :)

4. Togi Makabe, KUSHIDA & Juice Robinson vs. Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay & Tomohiro Ishii

comments: Poor Juice!

5. Hirooki Goto vs. SANADA

comments: Tough one as Goto's awesome in tournaments. SANADA might have a bigger upside at this point, though.

6. Michael Elgin vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan

comments: Elgin's the obvious choice but I'd love to see Tenzan in the semis. It might be one of his last tournaments anyway, so why not?

7. Kenny Omega vs. Tomoaki Honma

comments: Korakuen will love this! Honma's going all out, it just won't be enough to put Omega down.

8. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. YOSHI-HASHI

comments: It's Korakuen, it's Tanahashi... he almost HAS to lose here! I mean... we would then have a member of BC, CHAOS, LIJ and seikigun in the semis. I can't be the only one to absolutely love this scenario. :)

comments: See above. I'm starting to lean towards Tanahashi winning the whole thing to set up a final match with Naito.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>New Japan Cup Night 2 results!</p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>New Japan Cup Night 2 results!</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> by </span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>Dean</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> - </span><span style="color:#000000;"><em>3/4/17</em></span></div></p><p> </p><p> A sold out Korakuen Hall hosted the second round of the New Japan Cup, and fans were treated to another amazing Kenny Omega performance. In a trend that has started to mirror his incredible G1 Climax run, Omega has put on the best match of the night two nights in a row. We'll have to wait and see if this tournament will also end in victory for "The Cleaner".</p><p> </p><p> The first of the Round 2 matches saw Hirooki Goto avenge his G1 Climax 26 loss to SANADA. Goto has won the Cup three different times, and he made it to the semi-finals last year as well. Will he repeat his past successes or is he destined to fall short of the finals once again?</p><p> </p><p> Michael Elgin also advanced to the semi-finals last year, and this year will be no different. Elgin defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan with the Elgin Bomb, adding the veteran's name to the long list of opponents who have tasted defeated at the hands of Elgin's vicious powerbomb.</p><p> </p><p> The third Round 2 match was the match of the night, and once again was a Kenny Omega victory. After his great bout with Yuji Nagata last night, Omega put on another exceptional match, this time with Tomoaki Honma. The fans were firmly behind "Mr. Kokeshi", but Omega's brutal V-Trigger knee strike and the One-Winged Angel were more than enough to put Honma away.</p><p> </p><p> In the main event, Hiroshi Tanahashi pinned YOSHI-HASHI with the High Fly Flow. By the final moments of the match, many fans were rooting for the underdog, as cheers of "YOSHI-HASHI!" were heard throughout the legendary Korakuen Hall. However, after nearly 18 minutes of nonstop action, Tanahashi hit his signature Sling Blade and followed it up with a beautiful High Fly Flow to advance to the semis for the first time since 2012, the year in which he lost in the final round to Hirooki Goto. History has a tendency to repeat itself in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, but both Michael Elgin and Kenny Omega will be doing everything in their power to ensure it does not.</p><p> </p><p> The New Japan Cup tour will continue on March 8th from the Saku City Gymnasium, which kicks off three consecutive nights of non-tournament cards. The finals will be live on PPV and NJPW World from the Amagasaki Memorial Park Gymnasium on March 12th! </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/watchxyoxface/njpwbanner.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>NJPW "New Japan Cup 2017", 3/4/17</strong></span><span style="color:#000000;"> (Samurai! I am shocked that he's the only guy putting on A matches. I would have sworn Kojima vs. Tanahashi would have gotten an A last show, and would probably guess the same about YOSHI-HASHI vs. Tanahashi for this one. It's not like I'm disappointed, but it is certainly a surprise. I'm going to post full cards for the last four nights once I have them in the books, and will set up a prediction sheet just for the last show with the semi-final and final rounds. I have some time to start cranking out shows, so look for these to be posted soon. Then it's on to the Road to Invasion Attack, with a new challenger lined up for Kazuchika Okada! Interesting note - Okada has beaten every single one of the remaining wrestlers - Goto and Tanahashi multiple times in real life, Omega and Elgin once each in my game. Will someone finally get their comeuppance on the Rainmaker, or is he going to keep establishing himself as the ace?</span></div></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/l3Mucxl.png</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> <div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Predictions</span></strong></span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;"> Dr_Avalanche: 7 of 8 (plus the bonus! The remaining cards for the final New Japan Cup shows have been announced, and each card features plenty of matches between the final four entrants in the 2017 New Japan Cup.</p><p> </p><p>

The first semi-final match will be a rematch of the 2012 New Japan Cup Finals, as "The Ace of the Universe" Hiroshi Tanahashi will take on "Konton no Aramusha" Hirooki Goto. Goto advanced to the semi-finals last year as well, and has won the New Japan Cup a record three times. Goto and Tanahashi have wrestled in singles competition on eleven occasions, and Goto has only won one of those bouts - the aforementioned New Japan Cup final.</p><p> </p><p>

The second semi-final match will be between "The Cleaner" Kenny Omega and "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin. These two have only met three times before, and Elgin has won the last two matches, including a wild ladder match at Dominion in June of last year. </p><p> </p><p>

The New Japan Cup Finals will be live on PPV from the Amagasaki Memorial Park Gymnasium on March 12th!</p><p> </p><p>

<p>New Japan Cup Night 3 results!</p><p> </p><p>

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>New Japan Cup Night 3 results!</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> by </span><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>Dean</strong></span></span><span style="color:#000000;"> - </span><span style="color:#000000;"><em>3/8/17</em></span></div></p><p> </p><p>

The first of three non-tournament shows was held in front of 1,900 fans at a sold out Saku City Gymnasium tonight, and the main event far surpassed most house show tags we've seen this year. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Togi Makabe and Juice Robinson defeated the CHAOS trio of Kazuchika Okada, YOSHI-HASHI and Hirooki Goto when Makabe used the King Kong Knee Drop on YOSHI-HASHI in an incredible bout. These six gave it their all and the fans were treated to a very special contest.</p><p> </p><p>

Also of note was Will Ospreay picking up another win over KUSHIDA, this time using an amazing Imploding 450° Splash. Ospreay will likely be challenging for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title at Invasion Attack, marking exactly one year to the date on which he debuted for NJPW.</p><p> </p><p>

I should note that this is my "worst" A ranked match, and was probably only 1 or 2 points higher than a B+. Still, I'm happy I can randomly get these every now and then.</span></div></p>

<p>1. Teruaki Kanemitsu vs. <strong>Henare</strong></p><p>

comments: If he's able to stay focused, it's his fight to lose. I really like what I've seen of him so far.</p><p> </p><p>

2. <strong>David Finlay</strong> vs. Hirai Kawato</p><p>

comments: For a young boy like Kawato, Finlay is too much too soon. Easy victory for the "German".</p><p> </p><p>

3. <strong>KUSHIDA & Ryusuke Taguchi</strong> vs. Will Ospreay & Gedo</p><p>

comments: After having pinned KUSHIDA, Ospreay is already established as the next challenger so he doesn't really need a win here. Gedo takes the fall.</p><p> </p><p>

4. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. <strong>Hirooki Goto</strong></p><p>

comments: This is so hard to predict. Since he lost to Naito just a few weeks ago, I'd say it's best to not have Tana in (singles) championship matches for at least a few months. Goto could really get a rub from a victory here... and since he's New Japan's best tournament guy, he's probably going to get the W.</p><p> </p><p>

5. <strong>Michael Elgin</strong> vs. Kenny Omega</p><p>

comments: Way too tough as well. With these four guys you can do pretty much anything. You just can't go wrong. These guys have history with each other and I could easily see Elgin winning the whole thing, going for Naito's Intercontinental belt to avenge his best friend's loss... and, well, obviously going for <em>his</em> belt again as well.</p><p> </p><p>

6. <strong>YOSHITATSU, Manabu Nakanishi & Katsuyori Shibata</strong> vs. Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi & BONE SOLDIER</p><p>

comments: I pray to GoD (<img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />) I'm right this time. Losses don't hurt Nakanishi all that much but Yujiro seems to be the guy to take the fall here.</p><p> </p><p>

7. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, BUSHI, SANADA & Kamaitachi vs. <strong>Yuji Nagata, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask</strong></p><p>

comments: Team DAD and friends will get it done.</p><p> </p><p>

8. Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma & Juice Robinson vs. <strong>Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI</strong></p><p>

comments: Having Juice on your team in these high-profile matches is always a sign for bad things to come. He might surprise us, though. </p><p> </p><p>

9. Who wins the New Japan Cup? Tanahashi, Goto, <strong>Elgin</strong> or Omega</p><p>

comments: No idea, seriously. I'd love to see the battle of best friends or another rematch of last year's G1 final, pretty much anything you can do with these four. Something tells me Elgin's going to be the winner when all is said and done.</p><p> </p><p>

It's so hard to book New Japan as it's so awfully complex but you're doing a real good job connecting the dots. I don't even feel like reading a random dynasty by some even more random dude. It's just fun overall! <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

comments: Omega. This is what I think may happen, long term: Omega wins this tournament, then beats Okada for the belt. He then drops the belt to Goto either just before, or just after the G1, then Goto and the winner of the G1(probably Okada, splitting Goto from CHAOS) main even the next WK.

comments: Ultimately, I think Omega beats Goto again to really add onto the Goto sucks storyline, and adds to the chance of a BIG match down the line.

The penultimate New Japan Cup show was held at the Iwaki Municipal Gymnasium today, and ended the same way many NJPW shows have ended - with Hiroshi Tanahashi hitting the High Fly Flow to secure a victory. This could very well be how the New Japan Cup Finals end up as well, but we will have to wait until March 12th to find out.</p><p> </p><p>
