New Japan Cup Finals results!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">New Japan Cup Finals results! by Dean - 3/12/17

Earlier tonight, New Japan Pro-Wrestling history was made as "The Cleaner" Kenny Omega joined the elite trio of Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada and Hirooki Goto as the only wrestlers to ever win the New Japan Cup the year after they won the G1 Climax. In an instant classic, Omega defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi after 21 minutes of grueling action. Their bout was arguably the best match of 2017 so far, with only Tanahashi's pair of matches against Tetsuya Naito on the same level.

After the match and trophy ceremony, Omega quickly turned his attention to Kazuchika Okada:

Hahaha...Tanahashi! How many times do I have to beat you before YOU realize that you do not belong in the ring with ME? You gave it your best, but everyone here knows your days of being the ace are long gone. Anyone who's been watching for the last year knows I am the real ace! Not you, not Naito, and ESPECIALLY not the golden boy.

Yes, I'm talking about you Okada. See this trophy? You know what that means. Keep that belt warm for me golden boy, as we both know your days as champion are numbered. Good bye and good night!

As in years past, the winner of the New Japan Cup receives a shot at any singles title they want at Invasion Attack. As Omega implied, it is likely that he will be challenging Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Title.

In other news, it seemed like two tag team title matches were solidified. Togi Makabe won another match against CHAOS, which led to him and Tomoaki Honma challenging Hirooki Goto and Tomohiro Ishii after the match. In addition, Jushin Thunder Liger became the next veteran to score a victory over Los Ingobernables de Japón, as he used a Vertical Drop Brainbuster on BUSHI. After the match, Liger and TenKoji challenged LIdJ to a match for the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title!

New Japan Pro-Wrestling will return with a special New Japan Road show from the Okinawa Nippon Budokan on 3/18/17. NJPW has been running this venue around this time of year since 2011, and this year will be no different. That event will kick off the Road to Invasion Attack!

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/watchxyoxface/njpwbanner.jpg

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">NJPW "New Japan Cup 2017", 3/12/17 (WPW/PPV/NJPW World)

Amagasaki Memorial Park Gymnasium

5,000 fans - Super No Vacancy

Show rating: A

http://i.imgur.com/l3Mucxl.png

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">

http://i.imgur.com/sCjC9cP.jpghttp://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/watchxyoxface/75vs.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/i69eJDC.jpg

1. On the other hand, I am a fan of long title reigns with tons of defenses (like Tanahashi's one where he had like 13 defenses), so I wouldn't rule out something like that happening again, and Okada would be the only one to do it. We'll see.

New Japan Road in Okinawa, Invasion Attack 2017 and more!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">New Japan Road in Okinawa Nippon Budokan, title matches confirmed for Invasion Attack and Road to Invasion Attack dates! by Dean - 3/13/17

There was a ton of New Japan Pro-Wrestling news announced today, including both the full card for the New Japan Road show at the Okinawa Nippon Budokan, as well as the title matches scheduled for Invasion Attack 2017!

The main event of the New Japan Road show will see Los Ingobernables de Japón defend their NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title against the trio of Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima and Jushin Thunder Liger! With both Tenzan and Liger scoring victories over EVIL and BUSHI, respectively, the veteran trio is hoping to carry the momentum into Okinawa and end the reign of Los Ingobernables. In addition, we will see a first time ever match as Hiroshi Tanahashi and Michael Elgin take on Katsuyori Shibata and Yuji Nagata in a Special Tag Match!

As for Invasion Attack 2017, the main event will be "The Cleaner" Kenny Omega challenging "Rainmaker" Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Title! This will be a rematch of their Wrestle Kingdom 11 semi-main event, in which Okada defeated Omega with a Rainmaker in his 2nd successful defense of the title. After an incredible New Japan Cup performance, Omega is looking to become one of a select few gaijin IWGP Heavyweight Champions, doing his best to follow in the footsteps of "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles.

The IWGP Tag Team Title will also be on the line as the CHAOS duo of Hirooki Goto and Tomohiro Ishii will defend against Great Bash Heel. Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma are former Tag Team Champions as have both picked up pinfalls over Goto and Ishii in the past month. This is sure to be a hard-hitting match as these four are some of the toughest wrestlers on the NJPW roster.

In an Invasion Attack 2016 rematch, "The Aerial Assassin" Will Ospreay will challenge "TimeSplitter" KUSHIDA! It was exactly a year ago that Ospreay debuted in NJPW, in which he unsuccessfully challenged KUSHIDA for the Jr. Heavyweight Title. Has Ospreay improved enough over the last year to ensure a different outcome, or will KUSHIDA continue his dominance?

Lastly, Roppongi Vice will take on the Young Bucks in a rematch for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Title. Rocky Romero and Beretta are determined to defeat Nick and Matt Jackson and ensure their title reign will last longer than any of their previous times with the belts.

New Japan Pro-Wrestling returns with New Japan Road on 3/18/17 at the Okinawa Nippon Budokan. The Road to Invasion Attack begins on 3/20/17 and ends 4/6/17 at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan with Invasion Attack 2017!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">A lot of info here! I want to post predictions for the New Japan Road show, will then post full cards for the massive Road to Invasion Attack tour, and then post another prediction sheet for the final Invasion Attack card. I might break the tour up into two halves, since I don't post the full cards until after I actually book the show (just in case something crazy happens and I can't book my actual event), so it's going to take me some time to book the 8 house shows. Hopefully I can really crank out some shows with the Thanksgiving break coming up. I definitely hope to be on to Wrestling Dontaku by next week, and have the looming challenge of booking my first round robin (Best of the Super Jr.) soon enough. Thanks for reading along!

Hindsight being 20/20, I should've predicted the NEVER Six-Man title change. I think the record is, what? 2 defenses? And so far you've kept that trend alive.

Yujiro should have got this win

False. New Japan Pro-Wrestling news + MOTY update!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">The best New Japan matches of 2017 so far + brief news update! by Dean - 3/19/17

Before we move on to the Road to Invasion Attack, let's take a look at some brief New Japan Pro-Wrestling news and a recap of the top 10 NJPW matches of 2017 so far, as rated by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

 1. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito, NJPW "The New Beginning in Hiroshima", 2/11/17 - *****

 2. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito, NJPW "Wrestle Kingdom 11", 1/4/17 - ****3/4

 3. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kenny Omega, NJPW "New Japan Cup 2017 Finals", 3/12/17 - ****3/4

 4. EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima & Jushin Thunder Liger, NJPW "New Japan Road" 3/18/17 - ****1/2

 5. EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI vs. Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask & Tiger Mask W, NJPW "The New Beginning in Osaka", 2/14/17 - ****1/2

 6. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Go Shiozaki, NJPW "Wrestle Kindgom 11", 1/4/17 - ****1/2

 7. Hirooki Goto & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish, NJPW & ROH "Honor Rising: Japan 2017 Night 2", 2/21/17 - ****1/2

 8. Kenny Omega vs. Tomoaki Honma, NJPW "New Japan Cup Night 2", 3/4/17 - ****1/2

 9. Kazuchika Okada vs. Michael Elgin, NJPW "The New Beginning in Osaka", 2/14/17 - ****1/2

 10. Kenny Omega vs. Yuji Nagata, NJPW "New Japan Cup Night 1", 3/3/17 - ****1/2

As you can see, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has put on some incredible matches in the first quarter of the year. Perhaps most surprising are the bouts for the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title, which were surprisingly great.

In other news, Dave Meltzer has also reported that NJPW may be scouting some new talent, as well as potentially entering further negotiations with Kota Ibushi. While Ibushi worked under the Tiger Mask W mask back at the New Beginning shows, he has yet to return to NJPW and has instead been working regularly in DDT as of late. Further complicating the matter is the fact that Ibushi agreed to extend his pay-per-appearance deal with NXT last week. As a freelancer, Ibushi has expressed no interest in signing any sort of written agreement with NJPW, which may prevent a deal from being reached at all.

Rumors have also picked up regarding the acquisition of some new talent. Two American wrestlers in particular, Cody Rhodes and Ryan "Ryback" Reeves, have expressed a personal interest in working with NJPW. Meltzer stated that he hasn't heard anything from NJPW regarding those names, but has heard that they are looking closely at Big Japan's Daichi Hashimoto, the son of the late Shinya Hashimoto. Hashimoto has close relationships with Masahiro Chono, Keiji Muto and Shinjiro Otani, and one of those three may have put in a good word for him to Takaaki Kidani and Gedo. While NJPW is notoriously slow when it comes to acquiring outside talent, it would not be surprising if one of these four names were to debut by the summer.

The Road to Invasion Attack will begin tomorrow, and full cards will be posted shortly!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:red;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">So I wanted to post this update listing the top 10 matches of the first quarter of 2017. I used the numeric grades, and converted them to a fraction out of 5 to equate them to Big Dave star ratings. I figured this would be a fun retrospective. The matches are ranked 1 - 10 in numeric order, so all the ****1/2 matches were 92 - 91. Tanahashi vs. Naito at the New Beginning was a 99.

As for the talent update, I figured I could post something like this to give you guys some hints at who might be brought in (if anyone). I always try to balance what I would like versus what I think is realistic in the future versus what NJPW actually does. So, the real rumors floating around now are that they might bring in Ryback as a new Bullet Club member. If it does happen, I might just follow suit. On the other hand, Ibushi is one of my favorites and I have quite a few different ideas on how I could use him, and would love to book Omega vs. Ibushi at some point down the line. We'll see.

As for the next show, the Road to IA cards will be posted later tonight as I am finishing up the booking now. Some fun stuff but nothing really special, mostly regular old house shows. I will be posting the full card and prediction sheet for Invasion Attack as well, so keep on the look out for that!

Full cards for Road to Invasion Attack & Invasion Attack!

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">Full cards for all Road to Invasion Attack shows & full card for Invasion Attack 2017! by Dean - 3/19/17

New Japan Pro-Wrestling posted the cards for all 8 Road to Invasion Attack shows, as well as the final card for Invasion Attack 2017 at the Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. In addition to the title matches we previously covered on 3/13, we will be seeing a NEVER Openweight Title contest between the champion, "The Wrestler" Katsuyori Shibata, and "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin. Elgin has never challenged for the NEVER Openweight Title, but he seems to be a perfect fit for the hard hitting style seen in these bouts. On the other hand, Shibata has put together what many see as two defining title reigns, and has brought a tremendous level of respect to the championship. This might be one of the most brutal matches of the year!

As for the Road to Invasion Attack, the card for Night 8 is particularly interesting as we'll see 5 Bullet Club vs. CHAOS singles matches, similar to the NJPW vs. Bullet Club series we saw on last year's Road to Invasion Attack, as well as a rematch for the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Title! Take a look at the full cards leading up to Invasion Attack 2017, which is live from the Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan on 4/6/17!

1. Ricochet & David Finlay vs. Tiger Mask & Henare

comments: Henare's there to take the fall.

2. YOSHI-HASHI, Kazushi Sakuraba & Gedo vs. Yujiro Takahashi, Chase Owens & Cody Hall

comments: A toss up, both Gedo and Hall are fall guys so could go either way.

3. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, YOSHITATSU & Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, BONE SOLDIER & Bad Luck Fale

comments: GoD and BS on the same team? And YOSHITATSU? Yeah, this'd be a skip match for me.

4. Rocky Romero & Beretta © vs. Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson

comments: I know they're the hot potato titles but a guy can hope for a decent reign for the most underrated Jr. team in New Japan right?

5. KUSHIDA © vs. Will Ospreay

comments: Ospreay can only lose so many times before he's a joke, this has to be his moment.

6. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA, BUSHI & Kamaitachi vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi & Jushin Thunder Liger

comments: Sorry New Japan dads, but LIdJ need the win more on these big shows.

7. Katsuyori Shibata © vs. Michael Elgin

comments: Elgin seems to have pulled off a few decent ratings for you, could be time to give him another title run to see what he can do with it.

8. Hirooki Goto & Tomohiro Ishii © vs. Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma

comments: Goto & Ishii are a far more interesting team that can really anchor the tag division as you work to revive it. Makabe & Honma are good, but they're honestly gotten pretty stale now that Honma's lovable loser character is basically dead and buried.

9. Kazuchika Okada © vs. Kenny Omega

comments: Like Ospreay there's only so many times Omega can lose the big one until he's no longer believable as a legit challenger and for me that number is two. It's now or never for Omega.

3. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, YOSHITATSU & Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, BONE SOLDIER & Bad Luck Fale

comments: I'm BC for life but they shouldn't be going over Tanahashi at any point.

4. Rocky Romero & Beretta © vs. Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson

comments: Are the much better team in TEW and I like them so why not.

5. KUSHIDA © vs. Will Ospreay

comments: Unless he's getting his much deserved push to the Intercontinental scene, KUSHIDA will retain as Ospreay isn't that over.

6. Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA, BUSHI & Kamaitachi vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi & Jushin Thunder Liger

comments: Los Ingobernables, so hot right now!

7. Katsuyori Shibata © vs. Michael Elgin

comments: Shibata is love, Shibata is life.

8. Hirooki Goto & Tomohiro Ishii © vs. Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma

comments: Unless Goto and Ishii are going to be pushed in singles, I don't see anyway they drop the belts here.

9. Kazuchika Okada © vs. Kenny Omega

comments: I'm guessing Kenny goes over as he needs the belt and because Okada doesn't need the belt. Also Okada is so young and talented that title changes don't really matter to him, he'll always win it back down the line.

The Road to Invasion Attack kicked off tonight with a solid show from the Nagoya International Exhibition Hall, which packed in a sold out crowd of 4,000 fans! No real surprises on the night beyond a pretty big win for KUSHIDA, who made MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba tap out to a Cross Armbreaker. Interactions between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada were certainly heated as well. The Road to Invasion Attack continues tomorrow night from the Takaoka Techno Dome.

These are easy to crank out, since it's just the match results that I already have saved in a note. Also, just to brag - I called Kamaitachi in Los Ingobernables months ago! So pumped I got that right, since he does fit the group like a glove. I was dead wrong on some other things (why does Gedo hate Goto and Ishii?), but I am probably going to make a few changes in my game to reflect the current events with Cody and maybe Suzuki-Gun coming back.

<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:yellow;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">Road to Invasion Attack Night 4 results! by Dean - 3/26/17

The Komatsu Dome saw a slightly different card from the previous nights on the Road to Invasion Attack tour, as the main event was a six man tag between Bullet Club and CHAOS that ended in a rare Yujiro Takahashi win. Nights 5 and 6 will also see six man tag main events, all centered around Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega.
