Amazing Grace, Part II & Queen of the Ring Card

From the “AAA’s Greatest Rivalries, Vol. 2” DVD, released in November 2014

Part IV: Disgraceful

http://i.imgur.com/kEkUwNO.jpg

Cat Quine: “So, in late 2009, I start taking stock. I’d been working for nearly 14 years. I’m beginning to really feel those 14 years. I’m running the Cat’s Lair. Anne made me head booker. I’m doing PR for AAA. I’m helping Anne on the business end of things. Something’s got to give. All things considered, I’d had an incredible run as a worker in AAA. There’s a lot of exciting younger talent. And I figured, one last program to help put someone else over is what I’ve got left in the ring.”

http://i.imgur.com/zUsPh6M.jpg

Grace Harper: “Cat comes to me and she tells me she’s going to retire from her in-ring duties. I don’t know what to say. Since Anne retired, Cat Quine had been Ms. AAA. The last of the AAA originals.”

http://i.imgur.com/Opjjmbh.jpg

Anne Stardust: “Cathy comes to my office one day in December 2009 and says she’s thinking about retiring from the ring. I worked in-ring for 30, 35 or so years myself, so the idea of Cathy was done in less than half of that was...well, I was not prepared. But the business had changed. Cathy was one of the earliest stars I made in AAA, but we continued to make stars like Joanne [Rodriguez] and Sara [Marie York]. What I needed the most from Cathy was her backstage work.”

Quine: “So it’s decided. I’m done in November 2010. That gave us 11 shows. So if we’re going to elevate Grace to the main event, we don't have a lot of room for error. And considering how long she’d been in AAA, the loyalty even after North of the Border put a title on her, when we still hadn’t done so? Grace Harper had earned it.”

Harper: “Cat tells me that she wants her last feud to be with me. Which was - and still is - extremely flattering. Now, Cat and I wrestled each other before, mostly in the Helen Wheels days, and we’d had tag matches with each other in them and so on with me as Grace Harper. But we’d never wrestled any meaningful matches. So...how do we start?”

Quine: “Calling someone old is a time-honored way to get under someone’s skin.”

Harper: “It’s cheap heat, but it got things going. So, January 2010, the ‘Pretty Amazing’ show. I come out with a walker, doing an incredibly bad impression of Cat, moving down the aisle painfully slow. I make the crowd watch me inch my way down the aisle, and it was great - first they boo, then they get tired of booing because they get the joke but I’m still going, then they start booing because I’m still going way after the joke’s gotten old.”

Stardust: “Grace is a natural at pissing people off. It’s honestly impressive.”

Harper: “So, I get to the ring and throw the walker away, take off the old lady glasses and cardigan and wig, and I cut a promo.”

http://i.imgur.com/2m3v59w.jpg

Steph Blake: “Saying Grace ‘cut a promo’ is like saying the surface of the sun is ‘a wee bit toasty’.”

http://i.imgur.com/p39q1H6.jpg

Suzanne Brazzle: “I’m watching from behind the curtain. I’ve got my mouth hanging open, just thinking, ‘Holy [expletive deleted]’.”

Harper: “Some people - mostly the people on the Internet who think they know everything but are getting worked just as hard, if not harder, than the marks - said I did a ‘shoot’ that night. Come on. There’s no way I would have been employed with AAA if I hadn’t been cleared to say those things. I mean, do you know Anne Stardust? laughs”

Stardust: “If Grace had been shooting for real during that promo? I would have shot Grace Harper. For real.”

Harper: “It was a worked shoot. Which is to say, there’s some truth in the promo.”

Cut to camcorder footage from the Pretty Amazing 2010 show. Harper is in the ring, tearing off a gray wig and oversized glasses. The crowd starts angry and just gets hotter as the promo continues.

Harper: "Yeah, keep on booing. Getting boos from people I have zero respect for is something I take great pride in! Speaking of people I have zero respect for - Cat Quine, I know you’re listening backstage. I want you to listen to me and listen to me good. I am tired of you and the so-called 'AAA Originals' holding me down for almost a decade! I am tired of you hogging the spotlight and the glory, when I deserve it more than you ever did. I am tired of you, Cat! I have worked for this promotion for ten years and when was the last time I got a title shot, Cathy? Huh? Where’s my six different t-shirts at the merch table, like you have? How many times have I been front and center on a poster? How about just on a poster at all, Cathy? I am tired of you having your lips firmly attached to Anne Stardust’s backside, getting everything your little heart desires. I am tired of you using corruption and the ‘old girls’ network’ to sabotage my career, all because you’re jealous.

That’s right, Cat. You’re jealous. Because no matter what else you may have, one thing you’ll never be is younger than me. And that drives you crazy, doesn’t it? That I have even one thing that you don’t. You know why you have all of those things, Cathy? It’s because you’re a professional sycophant. And just so you morons in the audience understand me - Cat Quine, you are Anne’s toady, her yes-woman. You’re a professional buttkisser, Cat Quine, and I admit it’s worked for you. Look at all the things you’ve been given in your career. Three-time Femme Fatale champion. God knows how many times it’s your face plastered on merch. I’m sure you’ve been taking home much fatter checks than me.

I’m done, Cathy. I’m done being held down by you and the rest of your precious ‘AAA Originals’ who think you’re better than the rest of us. Maybe you’re better than the rest of the roster, but you are not better than me. No one is better than me! I am the best in the world. And you’re scared to face me, because you know it's true. You know your best days are gone and yet here you are, still clinging on. Well, screw you Cathy, screw this organization, and every single one of you sheep in those seats out there? Screw you too!”

Cut back to present day

Harper: “I suppose I did get a little intense."

Quine: “I knew Grace could be a comedy heel. I knew Grace could draw intense heat from her North of the Border stint. But this was something else. Because a lot of it, I think, was at least part of how Grace felt - filtered through her character.

Harper: “People have asked me, well, how much of that was work and how much was shoot? That’s the wrong way to look at it. It’s more that I took real feelings of frustration and asked how the Grace Harper character interpreted them. Did I believe that I had more to show than what I had up to that point? Definitely. Did I have some residual hurt that North of the Border almost immediately put a belt on me while AAA hadn’t? I did. But the real me, I understood why even as I wanted things to be different. The in-ring version of Grace Harper did not. She’d lash out, basically have a temper tantrum. And look at what I said in that promo. I’m saying I deserve things, but not really saying why I deserve them - that I just deserve them because I said so. I’m saying there’s a conspiracy without proof. I’m saying people who are more successful than me only do so because they’re suck-ups, again without proof. Grace Harper’s a narcissist. The only reason the character can imagine why she’s not a huge success is due to underhanded means and conspiracies, because otherwise, obviously, she’s the best and you’d have to be willfully blind or actively malicious to not agree.”

Part V: Claws Out

Quine: “So, first shots fired. I do a promo later that night, and only address a sentence or two toward what Grace said. Basically, I’m not flattering her delusions by taking much time to address them.”

Harper: “Cat dismisses me later in the show. Now, like I said, Grace Harper - the character - is a narcissist. She sees disrespect where there is none meant and lashes out. So you can imagine how well she takes someone actually disrespecting her.”

Quine: “Next month, 'More than Meets the Eye'. Jaime wins her first Top Contender’s championship. Only I can’t be there to celebrate with her because I’ve been ambushed in the back by Grace. So she’s ruined a once-in-a-lifetime moment with my family. Attack me, call me names, whatever - but messing with my family? Okay, now you’ve got my attention. I call Grace out at 'Girl on Girl action' in March, but of course, Grace doesn’t want to fight that night. She wants to face me in April, at 'Not Just a Pretty Face'.”

Blake: “The chemistry those two had - it’s a bloody shame it was Cat’s last feud, because they could have fought forever and still be entertaining!”

Quine: "We had a 28-minute main event at 'Not Just a Pretty Face'. Those are my favorite matches, the ones where you have time to really stretch out, let a story build."

Harper: "The story we told, I liked a lot. Quine’s playing the veteran standard-bearer of the company. She basically is AAA, personified. And I’m the upstart, the rebel. I was getting some cheers, which believe me, I wasn’t try to do, but it’s hard not to root for a rebel. So I come into the match cocky, and by the halfway point, I start getting frustrated and anxious, because I thought I’d have won the match and been in street clothes by then. I’m getting a larger share of the offense in, and Cat - bless her for it - is selling like a maniac for me. So I start playing faster and looser with the rules to keep up the advantage, but Cat just keeps coming back."

Quine: "By the 25-minute mark, we are just throwing bombs at each other, desperately hoping to land something on one another without taking something huge ourselves. Finally, I’m able to hit the Cat’s Cradle fisherwoman’s suplex. We’ve protected the move, so everyone knows that’s it, the match is won. The ref goes down and makes the three-count."

Harper: Now, here’s the thing - we made it so that I got my free leg onto the bottom rope at 2-and-a-half, but [referee] Dwight [Kumas] isn’t in position to see it, he just sees that my shoulders aren’t lifted. Cat has her big celebration, but we’ve clearly not given the crowd a clean, clear resolution. And, since I’ve been playing like I’m being held down by some backstage conspiracy, that ending ensures my character is hotter than ever about what’s going on. Clearly, drastic steps need to be taken.”

Blake: "And that's when [expletive deleted] got real." laughs

The first of three matches to decide the inaugural Queen of the Ring. Steph Blake already believes she is the “Queen of AAA”, seeing what she has proclaimed to be her "inevitable victory" as merely confirming her rule. But to do that, she’ll have to go through AAA’s showstopper, Nadia Snow. Snow dodged interference from her former-friend-turned-enemy Demelza Wade en route to a first-round victory. Can Snow stop the show

and

Blake’s coronation? Or will the “Queen of Mean” Steph Blake take one more step toward a crown she believes she already wears?

Breaks apparently let that near-triumph go to her head, claiming she scored the three-count on LaRue but the ref had a slow count. LaRue did not take kindly to the Blue Chipper’s boasting and challenged her to a match - a challenge Steph Blake and Demelza Wade

accepted on Breaks' behalf

. Tracey Brendon vs. Alicia Strong

Tracey Brendon's new attitude proved successful at Homecoming Queens as she defeated Danielle Sweetheart in a raucous brawl of a match. Alicia Strong, for her part, was taken to the limit by former Femme Fatale champion Demelza Wade, but hung tough to score the three-count. Brendon’s anarchic brawling and in-your-face style may be able to propel her to a victory over the woman who is perhaps the biggest star in women’s wrestling. But Alicia Strong has been in her share of knock-down, drag-out ring wars over the years, and she’ll be ready to give as much as she gets. Only one woman will be standing when this one is over - and that woman will be one step closer to being the first AAA Queen of the Ring.

After Lilith and her Children attacked new Femme Fatale champion Jaime Quine two weeks ago at Homecoming Queens, they were confronted by Wendy Anderson, Golden Delicious, and Bobbie McGee. After trading some barbs back and forth, Anderson challenged Devil’s Daughter to a title match, which Lilith accepted. The action outside the ring might be as important as the action inside, as Lilith’s Children have shown they have no compunctions about exploiting their numbers advantage. Can Golden Delicious and Bobbie McGee ensure the Children of Lilith stay out of the match? And even if they can, does the high-flying Anderson have what it takes to defeat Lilith’s First Child?

The main event will crown the first Queen of the Ring. All four women will come to the TRAC Center looking to permanently etch their name into AAA history, but only one woman can be the first Queen of the Ring. Will it be the ever-thrilling Nadia Snow? The haughty Steph Blake? The anarchic Tracey Brendon? Or the second-generation scion Alicia Strong? There’s only one way to find out - join us in Pasco on November 2, 2016 and see who will step up to become the undisputed Queen of the Ring!

Honestly, you could just do those retrospectives and this would still be an incredible read.

My favorite part was the subtle shade Stardust threw Cat's way, comparing how soon Quine is retiring relative to how many years she wrestled.

Really glad to see P&P win the tag titles on the last show. Even if they don't hold the titles for that long, Higgins and Sentinel will still get elevated by such a big win.

Paige's transformation will continue to be what I'm interested in the most. What the end game will be, I have no idea.

Steph Blake vs. Nadia Snow

I'm thinking Wade has to cost Snow this match in order to further escalate their feud. Even though Snow is a darkhorse to win the whole tournament, I think Blake winning sets up the more unpredictable final, but I'm not confident in this pick at all.

Ariel Breaks vs. Foxxy LaRue

Hmmm, Ariel might just take this. Maybe she cheats? Still, it's hard for me to pick against Foxxy when she should be light years ahead of Breaks in popularity.

Tracey Brendon vs. Alicia Strong

Is this a trap? Is there anyway the final could not have Alicia in it? I'm thinking Strong wins clean, and Brendon moves on to feud with someone else.

Wendy Anderson vs. Devil’s Daughter ©

This is the pick I'm most confident in, which as always, probably means it's wrong. I don't think you'd sacrifice DD's momentum to give Wendy even a DQ victory.

Steph Blake or Nadia Snow vs. Tracey Brendon or Alicia Strong

I think Strong is the obvious choice. Probably a little too obvious. The Queen of Mean could pull this one out with some shenanigans, but a post-match beatdown by her group would probably accomplish the same thing of setting these two up for a longer-term feud.

Steph Blake vs. Nadia Snow

I think the Queen has to take this one. If Wade's boss loses to her feud, it completely deflates her in the program.

Ariel Breaks vs. Foxxy LaRue

I see Breaks winning this by shenanigans, with an eye to seeing Wade/Breaks vs. LaRue/Snow on the next show. Would be a neat way to keep the program going while keeping it fresh.

Tracey Brendon vs. Alicia Strong

I like Brendon's new direction, but I don't think she can go over. Can maybe get some solid rub if she's kept strong (no pun intended) here, though.

Wendy Anderson vs. Devil’s Daughter ©

I like Wendy, but she's been mired in a midcard tag team for lack of anything better to do. And I don't think she really merits a star singles position when there's so many more talented and charismatic women clamoring for those spots. I'm sorry to say that Wendy is probably destined to be the midcard gatekeeper at best for life.

Steph Blake or Nadia Snow vs. Tracey Brendon or Alicia Strong

It's odd, since I don't like picked Alicia Strong to lose, but I think Steph gets a cheap win here, somehow. A Strong/Blake program would be really good, a tourney win would help Blake regain some juice since losing the title, and it would delay Strong from challenging for the belt for a while. The real question is how Strong while feel about putting Blake over, since I'm sure Strong must be head and shoulders more over than everybody. There's also the issue that Strong may very well just be cooling her heels here, so I don't know how hard you want to commit to pushing her versus just using her to get other people over.

Finally I caught up, this is probably one of the best Womens diary ever, and thats also backed by my love of AAA, hopefully I can see more of the story created before my eyes instead of reading way back of the diary.

Steph Blake vs. Nadia Snow

It pains me seeing Steph win, nothing agaist Steph I love her character, but im a declared Nadia fan but I see Demelza Wade interfering in some way or form now that she has nothing to lose, and will help us discover if Nadia was really the one behind the distraction.

Ariel Breaks vs. Foxxy LaRue

Well, Ariel, it was good knowing you while you were alive, good luck in the afterlife.

Tracey Brendon vs. Alicia Strong

We have seen Alicia beat her before, i dont see how the result could be different.

Wendy Anderson vs. Devil’s Daughter ©

I think its too soon into the run of the Children to take their major prize away.

Steph Blake or Nadia Snow vs. Tracey Brendon or Alicia Strong

Queen vs Icon, is difficult but I see Alicia taking it so you can build her strongly without giving her the Main Title, and this might be the only chance she has to get something in AAA before the big leagues come calling again.

I thought for sure I had done my predictions already, but they must have disappeared half written at some point.

The interlude was just what I had hoped for. It's so great to get that glimpse into Grace's past.

Tournaments are both easy and difficult to predict. You can sort of draw lines between one semi-final to the other, if one result go one way, you almost get the other one for free. But if you get one wrong, you get the whole card wrong instead.

Steph Blake vs. Nadia Snow

Here's the crossroad right away. Even without the risk of Demelza Wade interfering I'd pick Blake ahead of Snow, but interference can go wrong. But a Blake vs Strong final seem like a desireable outcome, so I'll go with the Queen of Mean.
