MMA: A New History

Recommended Posts

It is July 1992 and the world of combat sports is changing. Actually, it's been changing over the last decade; brave warriors have started to come forward and toss their name into the proverbial ring and take part in a violent new undertaking. This new bloodsport closely resembles the Brazilian art of Vale Tudo, while others have reached back into the annals of history and seen the ancient Pankration on display. Recently, the handful of die-hards who have been sucked into the sport have begun to settle upon a new term: Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA.

Manol Sirakov

When mixed martial arts truly started no one seems to know. How can one draw the line between the dirty streets and alleyways that saw Manol "The Smasher" Sirakov, well, smash his overwhelmed opponents in the early 80's and the (slightly) more civilized sport we enjoy today? While there will continue to be disagreements between fans of the sport, there is something everyone can agree on: the sport is on the precipice of taking off and is just waiting on a well-organized and well-funded venture to take root and shepherd MMA into it's next phase. There are rumblings coming out of Japan that just such a promotion is the final stages of getting funding and will soon reveal itself. Until that time, we head back into the fringe of sports, watching fighters put their lives on the line for pride, bragging rights and little else....

Large Vegas Show Announced for August

Today, a press release was sent out to local media members detailing a substantial MMA show taking place on the first Saturday of next month in Las Vegas, NV.

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/923/KdqIsk.gif<img alt="plSB9VR8g" data-src="https://imageshack.com/i/plSB9VR8g" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

The main event sees two of the most popular heavyweights in America lock horns for the first time. James Foster may well be the most well known mixed martial artist in the United States, if not the world. His All-American persona may not endear him to the hardcore base of MMA but has allowed him to tap into a more casual subset who values what they believe he stands for. On the end of the cage is another charismatic big man in Jeff Carlton, who brings a similar style of fighting, a power takedown usually followed by vicious ground-and-pound.

The co-main event sees a similar clash of styles, as rising star Sean Morrison takes on 32-year-old Beau Gorshin, both of whom come from wrestling backgrounds.

The full card is as follows:

Prelims

Heavy: Vincent Chapin (4-2, -350) vs "Papa Bear" Solomon Austin (6-3, +270)

Welter: Joe "The Hitman" Hinchcliffe (6-2, +440) vs "Iron Jaw" Peter Bracewell (6-1, -560)

Heavy: Frank Analysis (12-3, +390) vs Milton Harvey (11-2, -490)

Main Card

Light Heavy: "Wild" Bill Cumming (8-2, no line) vs TBA/Local Fighter

Matthew Dean Suffers Eye Injury, Out of Las Vegas Show

Donning an injury that appeared to be the result of an accident occurred during the assembly of a pipe bomb, "The Anarchist" Matt Dean, who contrarily stated that his injury was instead the result of a rather deep poke, today revealed to Blurcat that he had sustained an eye injury and had to be removed from his previously scheduled fight against Mac Fuller.

http://imageshack.com/a/img924/2084/bjBpyf.gif

Dean will be out of training for approximately 3 months.

Fuller, when reached for comment had some choice words for his former opponent. "Guys' obviously afraid of these hands," Fuller told Blurcat. "He may have dodged me this time but I'll see him when that pretty little eye of his heals up, and he's gonna be added to my list of victims." Fuller will now face off with a local fighter who has not yet been named.

Two Fighters Go Pro

August sees two new fighters, Murray Darby and Braulio Moura, join the ranks of professional mixed martial artists.

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/9853/FlQA0W.gif

Darby, a 23 year old Heavyweight, hails from Wellington, New Zealand, where he's competed as an amateur wrestler since his teenage years. Tall and moderately lanky at 6'4" and a walking weight of 211, Darby showed a variety of skills in a workout for Blurcat, displaying a solid wrestling background along with moderate striking skills. An area of concern with regards to a truly fruitful career is his current lack of knowledge in jiu jitsu, as the art of ground fighting has become more and more crucial over the last few years in MMA.

http://imageshack.com/a/img921/8096/ROZ1fM.gif

Moura is a 19 year old Middleweight from Sao Paulo, Brazil who has seen great success in Muay Thai in his native country. More stout and powerfully built than Darby, Moura is a fierce striker, able to maintain a furious pace while performing highly technical attacks. His grappling skills are still a work in progress but we see little need to excel in such tactics with such a preternatural skill for standing and trading, except to be able to keep the fight standing.

Live Results from the Large Las Vegas Show

Heavyweight Bout:

http://imageshack.com/a/img921/3879/Q2oLP4.gif

Vincent Chapin

33 years old, 6'1", 226 lbs

Wrestler, Los Angeles, CA

Pro Record: 4-2

vs.

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/4484/AA2RFO.gif

"Papa Bear" Solomon Austin

35 years old, 6'3", 265 lbs

Brawler, Norman, OK

Pro Record: 6-3

Blurcat Analysis: This is quite the aesthetic matchup, as the lean-muscled Chapin and the bulging belly of Austin are quite the dichotomy. Chapin's main weapon is his wrestling while Austin is known really just for being tough and being hard to take down. We see this matchup ending up as a slog and going to decision, although "Papa Bear" could make things interesting in Round 1 before he inevitably gasses.

Vegas Line: Chapin -350, Austin +270

Ref: Stanley Wright

Judges: Tony Waugh, Benjamin Milligan III and Reginald Wodehouse

Round 1

Austin comes in early and lands a jab, hook combo. Chapin is throwing but cannot find his target, while Austin continues to chip away with jabs and the occasional hook. Austin obviously controls the first minute and a half before he noticeably starts to gas. Austin lands a couple more weak punches and then clinches out of exhaustion. Breaking apart, Chapin seems energized by Austin's cardiovascular ineptitude and lands a nice one-two. The remainder of the round sees the fighters throw strikes but land very little.

Blurcat Scorecard: Austin 10-9

Round 2

Chapin throws his biggest punch of the night to start the round, hitting the setup jab but missing a big right hook. Chapin has taken the upper-hand in this below-mediocre striking battle as Austin looks on the verge of throwing up last night's dinner. Austin again tries to clinch to buy himself time but again does nothing with it and the fighters break. For the next 2.5 minutes, the fighters put on a pathetic display of offense, as Chapin can't connect with a stationary target and Austin flings jabs out into the air between deep shudders of breath. Chapin finally hits a jab as we reach the 1 minute mark but is immediately caught by a molasses slow combo from Austin, who then moves to clinch. Chapin, apparently remembering his skill-set, turns his heaving opponent and pins him to the cage. There, over the last 20 seconds of the round, he lands the most impactful strikes of the round, a pair of knees, one into Austin's jiggling stomach and the other deep into his thigh.

Blurcat Scorecard: Chapin 10-9; Tied 19-19

Round 3

Chapin comes out fast and hits a combo on Austin, who responds with a weak jab and another desperate clinch. Unfortunately for him, Chapin remembers the lesson learned from just 2 minutes prior and takes control of the clinch, pressing Austin against the cage. Chapin is content to assert his control, mixing very little in the way of offense to his wall-and-stall tactics. After a knee strike gets stuffed from Austin, the ref has seen enough and brings the fighters back into the center of the cage. Chapin sees an opportunity to land a decisive right hook but comes up empty, and eats a hook from Austin in return. Chapin still, for some god forsaken reason, cannot find his range against the immobile Austin, who lands a counter 1-2 to the face of Chapin. Chapin now seems to be slowing down as well and clinches with Austin as he breathes deeply through his mouth. Chapin pushes Austin against the cage again but, while throwing an elbow strikes, gets turned around by Austin, who now controls the clinch as the final seconds tick off the clock.

Blurcat Scorecard: Chapin 10-9; Chapin 29-28

Official Results: The judges score the contest 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28, all for the winner by Unanimous Decision....Vincent Chapin!

Heavyweight Bout:

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/451/SIFgWV.gif

Christopher "The Knife" Sharp

23 years old, 6'3", 265 lbs

Wrestler, Erie, PA

Pro Record: 6-1

vs.

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/9503/w3a76w.gif

"The Big Bopper" Barry Strachan

28 years old, 5'11", 240 lbs

Bar Room Brawler, Detroit, MI

Pro Record: 7-2

Blurcat Analysis: This match is a illustration of the growing overall skill-set of the MMA fighter today: in one corner we have "The Big Bopper" Barry Strachan, known for loving a fight, the ability to take a solid punch and some mediocre hands; in the other, a young, super-athletic wrestling dynamo who has punching power but little in the way of technique in Christopher Sharp. Anything can happen in a fight between two large men, but Blurcat sees a clear path to victory for the physically imposing Sharp: wrestling, takedowns and hammer-fists.

Vegas Line: Sharp -500, Strachan +390

Ref: Stanley Wright

Judges: Donald Coward, Ted Goldwyn and Tony Waugh

Round 1

Sharp wastes no time in getting to what he does best, stepping in to clinch with Strachan and muscling him up to the cage. Sharp gets in some *ahem* sharp dirty boxing that snaps Strachan's head back. After getting in that offense, Sharp decides to just hold Strachan against the cage for the next minute and a half, prompting the ref to break the clinch and set them back in the middle. Again, Sharp is too quick for Strachan and gets a clinch, peppering "The Big Bopper" with strikes as he slides him towards the fence. Sharp continues to cycle through dirty boxing, to smothering and back, for the remainder of the round.

Blurcat Scorecard: Sharp 10-9

Round 2

In almost a carbon copy of the beginning of Round 1, Sharp darts in to grab a clinch, not allowing Strachan to get his fists warmed up, and muscles his opponent against the cage. Short punches are exchanged as Sharp controls Strachan for a solid two minutes before the ref re-centers the men. Sharp again lunges for the clinch but this time, goes for a SLAM which he gets, flinging Strachan via a belly-to-belly and ending in side control! Sharp tries to find a hole in Strachan's defense but can't get anything substantial to land as Strachan attempts to move back to guard to little effect. While Strachan squirms, Sharp tries to set-up a KIMURA but cannot manage it. Capitalizing on Strachan's predisposition with his arm, Sharp slips into MOUNT and starts POUNDING AWAY! Strachan is getting pounded and has to turn over, giving up his back, to fend off the strikes. Sharp continues to pound away as the bell for Round 2 sounds.

Blurcat Scorecard: Sharp 10-9, Sharp 20-18

Round 3

Strachan, not the brightest bulb in the house, sees Sharp coming in for another quick clinch and tries to maneuver away but still gets caught. Sharp gets in a couple of close strikes before pushing Strachan against the cage. Sharp continues his Round 1 gameplan, hitting the occasional strike from the clinch in between periods of masterful wrestling control. The ref gives Sharp extra time this turn as it's apparent that Strachan just does not have the tools to combat Sharp's wrestling arsenal, finally breaking apart the fighters with about a minute and a half left in the fight. Sharp doesn't let Strachan breathe without moving in, getting the clinch, gifting Strachan some fists and then in a STUNNING move, crunches Strachan with a gorgeous T-BONE SUPLEX! Strachan is obviously dazed as Sharp grabs side control. Strachan gains his wits just in time to block Sharp's bundle of punches, and the round ends with Sharp still trying to unlock the ground and pound puzzle.

Blurcat Analysis: We believe Hinchcliffe has more technical talent here but Bracewell is as tough as they come. In what may prove to be a back-and-forth matchup, Hinchcliffe and Bracewell will likely trade the advantage between them as Hinchcliffe uses his great kicks to cut off Bracewell, who will try to use pressure and wrestling. Ultimately, we like Hinchcliffe by decision.

Round 1

The fighters meet in the center of the cage and trade swings-and-misses. Hinchcliffe scores the first combo of the fight, catching Bracewell with a jab and right cross, followed by another jab. Bracewell hits a hook of his own but the pace slows down after that, as strikes are thrown but only air is hit. As we hit the halfway mark of the round, Bracewell tries to step in to start wrestling but Hinchcliffe counters with another right cross that backs "Iron Jaw" up. Bracewell uses a jab and then steps in again but Hinchcliffe is still ready and hits his first kick of the night, following up a jab with a thudding body kick. Hinchcliffe tries his hand with a head kick but all he receives is a right hook in return. Stirred awake by Bracewell's cracker, "The Hitman" presses forward and hits a couple of nice combos as the round ends.

Blurcat Scorecard: Hinchcliffe 10-9

Round 2

The fighters come together and trade missed shots for the first minute-plus of the round. Strikes begin to land as Bracewell lands a jab while Hinchcliffe lands a left and a right. The fighters exchange jabs and Bracewell steps back to avoid a right head kick from Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe again grabs the upper hand, scoring punches at roughly twice the rate of Bracewell, although Bracewell seems to be packing a little more power. The rest of the round sees Hinchcliffe probing and seeking an opening but finding little, while Bracewell ends the round with a nice double-jab counter.

Blurcat Scorecard: Bracewell 10-9, Tied 19-19

Round 3

The round starts off well, as both fighters land combinations in the opening 15 seconds. Bracewell seems to be finding a better range than Hinchcliffe, landing a hook after Hinchcliffe misses a jab and kick combo. Hinchcliffe continues to press forward, hitting Bracewell with a hook at the end of a combo and then scoring a roundhouse kick to the midsection, sandwiched between a couple of stiff Bracewell jabs. Hinchcliffe lands a jab of his own but is smacked by a jab-cross combo from Bracewell. Bracewell counters a couple of Hinchcliffe combo attacks with more jabs, keeping the aggressor at bay. Hinchcliffe continues to press forward and finally sees his strategy bear fruit in the last minute and a half, nailing a few crosses and hooks, giving the better array of shots, although Bracewell also landed a couple of strikes of his own.

Blurcat Analysis: A couple of middling fighters doing battle here. Frank Analysis has enough power to give any opponent pause but a technical marvel he is not. Milton Harvey is a fine wrestler but can't out-box his way over your typical teenage amateur. The intriguing aspect of this fight is that both men seemingly have enough defense to counter the others' offensive strength: Analysis has shown a sturdy takedown defense in the past while Harvey's chin has held up against power punches in the past. This strikes us as a fight where the better conditioned athlete sneaks out with a victory. It's close, but we pick Harvey to take a decision.

Grappler, Phoenix, AZ

Pro Record: 13-2

Blurcat Analysis: This fight is the first real high-quality matchup we will see this evening. Rick Stanley is a ferocious striker, pressing the pace in the stand up where he has a variety of tools at his disposal. He has a weakness towards good wrestlers, although his takedown defense is solid enough - where he really struggles is keeping his back off the cage, especially since he is not on the larger end of the heavyweight scale. He will not, however, relent in an situation.

On the other end is just the type of fighter who has handed Stanley his 3 losses in the past: a big, burly wrestler who can absorb punches en route to gaining control of the fight via clinch work or, a masterful double-leg. While Jack Cobblepot is not a takedown artist, he is massive and has the wrestling pedigree and a solid chin to counter Stanley.

Given all this, we see a back-and-forth fight with Stanley pulling out a victory due to his better finishing ability and the fact that striking should out-point wrestling when on an equal footing.

Vegas Line: Stanley -180, Cobblepot -110

Round 1

Cobblepot waddles like a flash towards Stanley, absorbing a few strikes to the face but attaining what he pushed for: a clinch. Cobblepot gives back some punches, dirty boxing and working through the defense of Stanley. Cobblepot keeps the blows coming before transitioning to pushing Stanley against the cage wall. The two trade fistic gifts for 30 seconds until Cobblepot shifts his weight, and lands a pair of knees, above the hip and to the side of the stomach. Cobblepot gets greedy, going for a third but this time Stanley is ready, using Cobblepot's momentum to turn "Jackpot" around. The referee separates the combatants as we reach the 2 minute mark. Stanley is the aggressor this time, landing a jab and a straight right, and then another jab and a right hook. Cobblepot manages a counter-jab but is starting to get picked apart, as Stanley lands a pair of jabs and a straight right, a jab and another straight right. Cobblepot has had enough, scooting in to grapple when the round bell sounds.

Blurcat Scorecard: Cobblepot 10-9

Round 2

The round starts with fisticuffs, as Cobblepot throws out a jab to try and back off the incoming Stanley, but Stanley avoids and hits a jab-jab-leg kick combo. There are a few skirmishes that see neither fighter land anything as their guards have been raised. Almost halfway through the fight, Cobblepot lands a jab but gets stung by a jab-jab-straight rapid fire combo. Stanley continues his pressure, landing a jab and roundhouse left kick before Cobblepot snaps off a jab of his own. Stanley catches Cobblepot's attention with a stiff jab-straight combo, prompting "Jackpot" to search for the holy land of the clinch. He does, but ate more leather to get there. Cobblepot unleashes the dirty boxing, getting several strikes to the side of Stanley's head. A knee lands to Stanley's body which makes Stanley prompt to wriggle free, but stays stuck to his larger opponent and gets more punches as a result. The round ticks down as Cobblepot layers two knee strikes around a push into the cage.

Blurcat Scorecard: Cobblepot 10-9, Cobblepot 20-18

Round 3

Stanley fires out some strikes at the approaching Cobblepot, landing a few but getting sucked into the clinch again. Cobblepot yanks Stanley down to the ground, leaving "The Pit Bull" turtled with "Jackpot" on top. Cobblepot is throwing some BOMBS and a couple manage to jar consciousness from Stanley! The ref leaps in and it's all over!

Blurcat Analysis: What a matchup. Both of these guys would be favored against nearly any other opponent out there. Both are phenomenal wrestlers, especially in regards to takedowns, and have jackhammer-strength ground-and-pound. Foster may have more developed stand-up skills but Carlton is bigger, having 3 inches and over 40 pounds on "The King of Ground and Pound". While Foster has already been anointed with this name, it seems only fair that this fight is a title fight, not for a physical belt, but for THE title of King of Ground and Pound. We think the Vegas odds are too wide, although if forced to make a pick, our pick goes to Foster.

Round 1

The wrestling supernovas begin their fight with two combos landing, a jab-right hook from Foster and a jab-straight from Carlton. Foster lands a pair of jabs and a solid right, while Carlton lands a jab but has a right cross go empty. After 30 seconds of muffled strikes, Carlton sets up a sizzling right with a jab but misses the fight-ender, while Foster finds room to land to left to the midsection. Carlton throws out a pair that hit air and is countered with a right from Foster. Foster is starting to show a real upper hand in the striking in the 2nd half of the round, dodging both punches of a combo while landing a jab-straight. Then does so again. Punches go unanswered for the next minute before the round ends with another combo hit from Foster.

Blurcat Scorecard: Foster 10-9

Round 2

The fighters exchange jabs but it's Foster who finds a home for a right cross, too. Carlton uses a jab to get Foster off his balance and miss a combo. Foster responds with a jab of his own. Another jab exchange and a straight from Foster lands. Foster lands a jab-right hook while Carlton misses his jab, but lands a right cross. Carlton continues throwing big shots but just can't connect getting peppered by punches from Foster. Foster is much slicker and more technical, although Carlton does have his moments of landing. The round ends with Foster out-landing Carlton 21 to 10.

Blurcat Scorecard: Foster 10-9, Foster 20-18

Round 3

We start Round 3 with more striking, as Foster lands a jab-hook while Carlton just lands a hook. 30 seconds of nothing leads to another jab-hook to hook victory for Foster. The standup is starting to heat up, as Foster get a jab and great cross through and Carlton nails a crunching hook of his own. They are going at it! Jab-jab-hook from Foster, jab-straight from Carlton. The crowd rises to its feet but just as that happens, a stalemate passes through the action as punches meet air. Foster reignites with a jab-jab-straight combo while Carlton stays reaching. Foster peppers Carlton with another combo and "The Rock" is wobbly! Foster REARS BACK and LAUNCHES a straight right that sends Carlton to THE MAT! Foster is in his element and lands some HOWITZERS! Carlton goes LIMP and that's IT!!

"The Dark Knight" Retires

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/1791/ms8Rwj.gif

Retiring to as little fanfare as possible is "The Dark Knight" Theo Powers, a 39 year old former boxer. Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Powers had a record of 2-1 in MMA, seemingly never finding the interest in his latest venture that he had in boxing earlier in life. We wish Powers the best as he moves on with his life.

MMonthly Conversation

We here at Blurcat are happy to announce a new monthly feature, MMonthly Conversation, a monthly feature in which we sit down with a mixed martial artist and ask them a few questions concerning their career. Our first guest: "Jackpot" Jack Cobblepot, whose last fight was a Knock Out victory over Rick Stanley earlier this month that pushed his record to 14-2.

BLURCAT: Thank you for meeting with us Mr. Cobblepot.

JACK COBBLEPOT: Mmmhmmm, you got it.

BLURCAT: Your last fight was a tremendous contest that saw you put away a tough guy in Rick Stanley in the 3rd round...

JACK COBBLEPOT: Yup, Stanley's a tough dude. Not the hardest puncher I e'r faced but he's got sumthin' in those gloves fer-sher. Luckily for me I got this big ol' noggin' of mine that keeps me standin' (laughs).

BLURCAT: Stanley is known to be a fierce striker and has earned himself some fans with that style. You, on the other hand, have made wrestling your main base of attack. The fans in attendance gave you a little grief in that fight for that. Your thoughts?

JACK COBBLEPOT: Iunno man, obviously having the fans in yur corner is a plus but at the same time, I'm here to win man. And with this big ol' base I gawt, I'd be a fool to waste my time, swinging legs with Stanley when I culd jus' control him easily. Plus man, I got the KO anyways! (laughs) What more do yuh want from me man?

BLURCAT: Last question: you've fought across the country in your 4+ years as a fighter but never for one company consistently. What are your thoughts about where MMA is going and where you'd like to see it go?

JACK COBBLEPOT: Yeah man, I kinda just go where the fights are at man. Would it be cool if I knew where that'd be before hand? Yeah, that'd be cool I guess. Fer now though, just point me to that cage and I'll be seein' ya there.

Japanese MMA Organization "ALPHA-1 Announced

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/47kPrj.jpg

In breaking news today, a press release was received by Blurcat announcing the implementation of a new mixed martial arts promotion. Named "ALPHA-1: Japanese Mixed Martial Arts", the new company is based in Tokyo, Japan. While the release did not give much more detail, it did state that the promotion is looking to "provide phenomenal mixed martial arts action to local Japanese fans through alluring live shows, and to fans around the globe through pay-per-view broadcasts." Additionally, the release stated that ALPHA-1 will "honor the samurai spirit of the Japanese warrior as well as the rest of the biggest names in the sport from around the world."

We have yet to pinpoint who or what is behind this new venture but there certainly will be new information that comes about in the passing days. Stick to Blurcat.com for the latest.

Please Welcome the Magnificent Seven

Seven fighters announced their intentions to compete as professional mixed martial artists over the last week or so. Here is a rundown of the who and the what about these fighters.

http://imageshack.com/a/img921/3400/5AuI6T.gif

Dexter "D-Man" Darling

A man quite a few of you may recognize from his days donning the black, gold and silver for the 1990 AP National Champion Colorado Buffaloes, the former linebacker Darling is an amazing athlete. Drawing rave reviews from training partners, who claimed that Dexter has "picked this sport up in a fraction of the time of a normal man", Darling already sports an electric double-leg takedown and hammers for fists. Jiu-jitsu is nothing to write home about but, for this proven winner, we don't put this intricate arts' mastery far from Darling's grasp.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: A

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/6018/3pzSod.gif

Armen "A-Game" Sarkisian

A huge bear of a man, the 6'4", 282 (walking-weight) Sarkisian hails from Artashat, Armenia, a country for whom he "represented", as an alternate for the former-Soviet Union-led Unified Team, at this summer's Olympic Games in Barcelona. Sarkisian is, obviously, a master grappler but has shown ability in flashing the leather as well, hurting a couple of training partners over the last few months per our sources. "A-Game" is a fitting title for a man of this level.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: A

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/6194/LsCNMd.gif

Templeton "The Body" Crumb

A former amateur boxer in his native South Africa, the welterweight Crumb is a feared striker who will look to hold more than his own in a stand-up contest. We have yet to see a display of his other skills when it comes to MMA but what we've seen so far, we've liked.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: B+

http://imageshack.com/a/img921/5230/rxfwMf.gif

Philip "Kid" Ziskie

Highly skilled and well-versed in all areas of martial arts, Philip Ziskie looks like a star...and that's to say nothing of his easy-going So Cal look and persona. A kick boxer by trade, Ziskie, a featherweight, shows most promise in his variety of stand-up techniques, which already seem to put the rest of the "small guys" of the world to shame. The future is bright indeed for the "Kid.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: A

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/5885/iRFkHT.gif

Mal Phe Roby

An experienced Muay Thai practitioner, Mal Phe Roby of Indonesia is coming into the game relatively late in life at the age of 27. A middleweight competitor, Roby is known on the vastly populous island nation for his brutal leg kicks, which have been known to change the course of many of his fights. His hands lag behind his legs however, and we have yet to see much in the way of wrestling.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: B

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/318/5Gwjkc.gif

Adenor Togni

The only true jiu-jitsu player of the incoming batch of fighters, the 23 year old Brazilian Togni has held his own in local tournaments. A lightweight, Togni has shown an adeptness for fistic violence as well, meaning he is a guy to keep an eye on.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: B+

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/9381/J2c1ra.gif

Branco

The last of our prospects is probably the most mediocre fighter of the lot but nonetheless, may wind up being the most popular. A lightweight hailing from Fortaleza, Brazil, Branco is a fine kick boxer when sticking to techniques, although in the demo that our sources witnessed, that is not something he seems to do often. Branco has a flair for the dramatic, throwing strikes straight out of a Bruce Lee movie. While sure to be crowd pleasing, these strikes have yet to bear much fruit in a professional cage fight. With a startling lack of wrestling and submission skills to his person, Branco may wind up being a crowd-pleaser but not a title-chaser.

BLURCAT PROSPECT RATING: C-

First Hire of ALPHA-1 Announced

http://imageshack.com/a/img921/1877/3W0bW0.gif

While there is no new news regarding who is behind the new fighting organization ALPHA-1, Blurcat has learned of the first new hire by the promotion: Furuichi Abe. If you haven't heard of this fighter's name before well, that's not surprising because he's not a fighter at all. The 22-year old is a recent graduate from the University of Tokyo and will be ALPHA-1's "play-by-play" broadcaster for when the promotion airs pay-per-view events. His broadcasts will be in Japanese given the location of of the promotion; we have yet to hear ALPHA-1's plan for English, or other language, speaking audiences if they ink deals with international broadcast providers. That is obviously a bit premature as the organization has yet to sign a deal in their native country, or even sign any fighters. We will stay on this story and will post the latest when we get it.

Monty "Larry" Olivier Retires

http://imageshack.com/a/img923/4061/WCZCXa.gif

Despite winning his latest fight in July, heavyweight Monty "Larry" Olivier has decided to call it quits at the age of 37. The 6'1" Frenchman from Marseille went 10-5 in mixed martial arts contests and was ranked 21st in Blurcat's inaugural fighter rankings.

ALPHA-1 Hires Two More Broadcasters

ALPHA-1 may not have any fighters on it's roster yet, but it's growing a stable of broadcasters, adding two new voices, Shigenaga Hirota and Tomoaki Komatsu, to the product on top yesterday's hire of Furuichi Abe. Both gentlemen are in their mid-twenties. So far it is unclear how ALPHA-1 plans on utilizing each men to the best of their abilities.
