Booker’s Journal

Entry #1: Two years of salvation

Hi, everyone. Welcome to my journal. It has been over two years since I surprised myself by getting a bookers job in IWJ. Admitted it was not much of a big gun but IWJ had carved a unique place in Japan by offering higher level of foreign workers than others and making some great stars and I feel ecstatic to know that I have been a big part of that journey. From a small promotion, we have risen to a regional one and have grabbed attention from other named companies who apparently have hostile attitude towards us due to our rise. I always thought that going out of North America would leave a bad taste in my mouth but I was surprised by the professionalism of the roster here and their attitude towards wrestling.

I have shifted my base permanently to the industrial city of Hiroshima and I must say it has been a great journey so far and one that had I intend to continue as I got the respect that I never even dreamt of. Though the backstage has never been short of incidents or mishap which is part and parcel of any promotion, I have tackled it good.

So, i request you to read along as i summarize my journey by pointing out the most important members or groups that have helped IWJ to get to where it is today.

Booker’s Journal

Entry #2: Still the top dogs

My journal today talks about the biggest group in IWJ that have existed since the beginning, Outside Interference. Made up entirely of non-Japanese wrestlers, these group was at the forefront of every IWJ show right from the start. The initial members were Aydan Farrell, Des Miller, Ice Simmons and Jesus Rio. Des, Aydan and Ice all became the Heavyweight Champions during their stay at IWJ and they were destined for greatness before UPJ, the biggest promotion in Japan came calling and scooped up Aydan Farrell and Des Miller which left the group in shatters.

1st Incarnation

Not to be perturbed, management searched far and wide and signed Arnoud Vox and Stacks Armstrong to replace the departing wrestlers and Ice Simmons became the leader of the new pack. Though the new look team started well, problems started creeping in and Arnoud and Stacks both were fired due to being a backstage nuisance always picking up fights with others, even fans.

2nd Incarnation

Once again Outside Interference were reduced to two. Even though Ice Simmons had become a certified IWJ legend courtesy of his 4 Heayweight title wins and 2 Tag Titles with Jesus Rio, at an age of 47, he decided to retire sending the group to total irrelevance.

His last match in IWJ was fought against me where I took the title and we brought the house down.

This time I decided to rebuild the stable as without them, IWJ would cease to exist. So, I brought in Magnus Stonebreaker, a triple Olympic medallist from Iceland, a fantastic wrestler in his own right and he took to the group as fish takes to water. With me holding the Heavyweight Championship, Magnus holding the Openweight Championship and Jesus Rio being a dual sports superstar as he is competing in both MMA (where he is 2-0) and wrestling, Outside Interference once again are the top dogs

Entry #3: Defending Japan’s pride

When you have such a powerful gaijin stable in Outside Interference, you must have equally powerful men who can stand up to them, who can defend homeland’s pride…Right.?? So, that’s where my entry leads you to today as we talk about Misfits…Japan's answer to all the outsiders.

Kodaka-USAMI 3000-Motosugu Sugawara-Ryo Kigugawa

1st Incarnation

Initially, established as a group of 4 friends or two teams who are at ease fighting even each other, Misfits have always had that friendly vibe amongst themselves. Started by teams of Kodaka & USAMI (Kodaka/USAMI 3000) and Wara-Gawa (Motosugu Sugawara/Ryo Kigugawa) to oppose the dominance of Outside Interference, they were equally successful in their endeavors.

With Kodaka & USAMI being the most decorated tag team having been 4 times tag champions, this unit was always in the news especially in the tag division. But tragedy struck when Kodaka left the company after getting disillusioned with company’s decisions. This created a big void as he was the most decorated star of the unit.

The other three banded well together and soon they found a great replacement in Akira Taguchi who continued the unit’s tradition of tag teams by forming one with USAMI 3000 as Akira 3000 and they soon took the division by storm finally culminating with their tag championship win.

With Wara-Gawa already two time champs and additionally USAMI 3000 and Akira Taguchi gearing up for their biggest singles push of the career, future looks bright.

Additionally, Motosugu Sugawara’s national popularity as an upcoming rapper have always brought them the limelight they crave for.

<em>Entry #4</em>: <strong>Rise of the tigers</strong></p><p> </p><p>

With all attention getting grabbed by the two warring factions of Outside Interference and Misfits, the fans needed a third front to help them get settled amidst the feverish rivalry. So, that’s where my today’s entry comes in as I chronicle the uncreatively named <strong>S.E.A.T or South East Asian Tigers</strong>, a team made exclusively of South East Asian wrestlers.</p><p> </p><p>

It started when Amando Ocampo and Apolinario, two of the best wrestlers to emerge from Philippines and best friends for life joined IWJ on a touring contract as Filipino Fire Power. They impressed the crowd so much that we were forced to sign them to a regular PPA contract. They gave us the idea of forming a unit entirely of South East Asian wrestlers and it was well received. Soon Taiwanese Seung Zhi and Mongolian Giant from Mongolia (of course) completed the group.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i66.tinypic.com/14xktg3.jpg</span><span>http://i64.tinypic.com/2weyvpz.jpg</span><span>http://i67.tinypic.com/1o5doo.jpg</span><span>http://i64.tinypic.com/qrnn78.jpg</span><p>

<strong>Amando Ocampo-Apolinario-Seung Zhi-Mongolian Giant</strong></p><p>

<em><strong>1st Incarnation</strong></em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

But soon Mongolian Giant was let go due to his constant botching which injured many workers.</p><p> </p><p>

With team reduced to three, the two Filipinos continued to impress, they were still in search of a fourth member. When “The Armbar King” Akihiro Soga debuted, he was courted to join but he kept refusing due to he being a Japanese pure blood but finally after his enormous losing streak, he denounced his Japanese heritage, claiming he is from the wild streets of Bangkok and became the fourth tiger of the South East Asian Tigers.</p><p> </p><p>

With line-up finalized, S.E.A.T has gone from strength to strength and now is a more powerful unit than they started.</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Entry #5</em>: <strong>Carnage comes in masked form</strong></p><p> </p><p>

I had always maintained that for any good roster to be complete, you need some badass masked wrestlers. They bring an aura of grandeur to the proceedings and IWJ had been fortunate to get some talented wrestlers who all have been part of a single unit.... <strong>Masked Mayhem</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Bloodus Draconia and Tigre De Plata had been associated with IWJ for a pretty long time and they took the tag division by storm with their breath-taking moves and fast paced action. Soon they found a mentor in El Fenix who joined to bring solidarity to the masked revolution.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i66.tinypic.com/a9wlf4.jpg</span><span>http://i65.tinypic.com/aon9ld.jpg</span><span>http://i65.tinypic.com/atkoyv.jpg</span><p>

<strong>Bloodus Draconia-Tigre De Plata-El Fenix</strong></p><p>

<em><strong>1st Incarnation</strong></em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Apart from 2 tag reigns, De Plata and Draconia both had won the Openweight Championship but it was in the midst of Draconia’s reign that IWJ was forced to change the prestige of the belt from a midcard title to a floating title as Bloodus had great matches with almost everybody on the roster. </p><p> </p><p>

With him set for a year-long reign with the title, success went to his head and he started appearing on the shows intoxicated which started bringing the quality down. Even after several repeated warnings and fines, he continued his ways and there was no choice other than to fire him.</p><p> </p><p>

Since then, El Fenix and Tigre De Plata have won the tag titles and continue to defend against all comers but they are also looking to expand their unit. With both pretty experienced individuals, they hope they can woo other young potentials to their cause.</p><p> </p><p>

Apart from the two Iron Cup matches, this show was all about giving the youngsters and the lesser established talent a shot at the contenders of Iron Cup and the results were mixed.</p><p> </p><p> The opening match saw “The Armbar King” Akihiro Soga take on the Canadian submission machine, Keymo and it started the show well as these two submission experts had great chemistry and fans were treated to a highly technical submission game. In the end, Soga prevailed after using one of his umpteenth variations of armbar.</p><p> </p><p> Seung Zhi tried to get his unit a major upset win when he took on the rockstar ICHIBEI, who was in a jolly mood coming to the ring headbanging throughout. Even though Zhi tried everything to upset the rhythm, in the end the fan favorite ended the match via his Heavy Metal Hangover. Even though he is on a touring contract, the popularity of ICHIBEI within IWJs audience may play a part in him signing a PPA deal. Rumors are that he may even be allowed to win the 1st Iron Cup thus legitimizing his shot but decisions are yet to be taken.</p><p> </p><p> The two 1st Round matches of the Iron Cup were decent at best, with the monstrous Rhyno Khan finding it hard to put away the super junior Ryder managing to just win the match at the last moment via a Rhyno Charge. Show Thoughts

A much better show than the previous one, once again “The Armbar King” Akihiro Soga started the proceedings winning his Iron Cup 1st round match against Ryo Kikugawa of Misfits. Even though the unorthodox brawling style of Ryo stunned Soga for some time and he ate a vicious I’m not KRZ!!! to lose the first pin, he recovered quickly and threw 5 different variations of armbar. Out of which 3 were countered but Ryo did not have any answer to the other two and he ended up losing the match.

Apolinario has been losing a lot in the last month so this was his chance to get back to winning ways. He also got a relatively easier opponent in Juki who was hindered by the injury he is carrying. But still Juki managed to stave off the Filipino for quite some time before his injured leg gave away and he succumbed to a Volcano Driver.

Kisanuki kept his momentum going after getting a pinfall within the 1st quarter of the match with his Driving Elbow and then holding off to see the match, even kicking out of a SugaGrind from Sugawara.

ICHIBEI clashed with Akira Taguchi and this match was supposed to give the answers to the rising concerns of whether ICHIBEI would be pursued to a permanent contract or not. These two did not disappoint and they put together a superb bout with both shining in phases. However, a pin fall eluded either of them. With mere seconds left in the clock, the rockstar countered a Forget Me Knot attempt and then laid on some heavy hands before hitting his Heavy Metal Hangover for the win.

Disappointed at not progressing in the tournament, Akira had some choice words to say to the champ Ares as he made it clear that it is not the end of the road and he would soon be back to stake his claim at the Heavyweight title.

MATCH OF THE NIGHT

Intl. Openweight Championship: Magnus Stonebreaker © vs Tigre De Plata

This was by far the best match of the season and a definite MOTY contender and it repaid the faith that the management has in these two.

They bettered their previous encounter at IWJ EXCESS by several notches. The champ looked to take a headstart when he tried several Olympic Stretch attempts very early on but Tigre had scouted well and he blocked most of them. The bout was contested at a feverish pace and the crowd lapped up all the action applauding throughout the match.

A series of dropkicks, splashes and a big boot by Tigre transitioning into a trio of German suplexes by Magnus, the last one from the top rope was a definite highlight reel of the match.

Finally, with both starting to tire , the champ took the initiative and locked in his Olympic Stretch to eke out a hard-fought win and bring the show to a close with a bang.

With last week signaling a new dawn as Iron Cup tournament started, we look forward to Show 3 in Chubu as we cap off the 1st Round matches.

Show 3, Chubu

Ryder vs Joao Iwahara

With both eliminated from the tournament, this is seen by both as ways to regain some momentum and also to rub off some positive impact on their partners who will be fighting to survive in the Iron Cup

Akira Taguchi vs Yushihito Juki

After Akira let out some choice words for the Heavyweight Champ, Ares on the last show and signaled his intent to get a shot soon, he gets Juki who is himself in uncomfortable position due to his injury which has hindered his progress in IWJ.

Iron Cup 1st Round: Amando Ocampo vs Danger Asahara (Iron Man match)

Amando Ocampo would look to complete a clean sweep of S.E.A.T members into the quarters after both Akihiro Soga and Apolinario won their 1st round encounters.

Iron Cup 1st Round: Dark Wolf II vs USAMI 3000 (Iron Man match)

It has been a torrid time for Misfits in the tourney after all their members lost. Can USAMI 3000 restore some pride....but then again he is facing the 3rd generation Mexican superstar, whose mask commands lot of respect here in Japan.

Outside Interference (Ares/Magnus Stonebreaker) vs S.E.A.T (Akihiro Soga/Apolinario)

After entering the quarters of the Iron Cup, both Soga and Apolinario has seen their confidence rising and they have challenged the reigning champs to a tag match. Will these be their downfall or will they upset the all-powerful group.

IWJ Intl. Tag Championship: Masked Mayhem 2.0 (El Fenix/Tigre de Plata) vs Wara-Gawa (Motosugu Sugawara/Ryo Kikugawa) (2/3 falls)

With Tigre de Plata failing to win the Openweight title in a MOTY, this time it is his turn to be on the other side of the court as he defends his tag titles against Wara-Gawa whose run as individuals ended in the Iron Cup but they were awarded for their tenacity with a tag title shot in a 2/3 falls match keeping in with the flavor of the tourney season.

PREDICTION KEY

1. Ryder vs Joao Iwahara

2. Akira Taguchi vs Yushihito Juki

3. Iron Cup 1st Round: Amando Ocampo vs Danger Asahara (Iron Man match)

4. Iron Cup 1st Round: Dark Wolf II vs USAMI 3000 (Iron Man match)

5. Outside Interference (Ares/Magnus Stonebreaker) vs S.E.A.T (Akihiro Soga/Apolinario)

6. IWJ Intl. Tag Championship: Masked Mayhem 2.0 (El Fenix/Tigre de Plata) vs Wara-Gawa (Motosugu Sugawara/Ryo Kikugawa) (2/3 falls)

Even though Apolinario tried everything to get his team back, Akihiro was a disappointment as he could not cope up with the pace of the match and soon succumbed to an Ares-plex.</p><p> </p><p> In keeping with the flavor of the tourney, the main event was a 2 out of 3 falls match for the Tag Championship and Masked Mayhem 2.0 had their task cut out against Wara-Gawa of Misfits. He almost won the match when he hit his I’m not KRZ!! on Tigre de Plata but El Fenix interfered at the right time to prevent the pin. He roughed up Kikugawa before getting the 1st fall. Soon, their confidence started growing up and they soon finished the match with a second straight fall and again the victim was unfortunately Kikugawa.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42843" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="color:#FF0000;">MATCH OF THE NIGHT</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i66.tinypic.com/2ug2j5e.jpg</span><span>http://i68.tinypic.com/30c80gp.jpg</span><span>http://i68.tinypic.com/2pz0eja.jpg</span><p> <strong>Iron Cup 1st Round</strong>: <em>Dark Wolf II vs USAMI 3000</em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> The last match of the 1st round pitted the lone remaining member of Misfits, USAMI 3000 against the 3rd generation superstar, Dark Wolf II and it lived up to the expectations as it became the highest rated match of the 1st round.
