Climbing to the APEX

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, Mikemanwba here with my new TEW save, Climbing to the APEX.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter - Friday Wk 1 November

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the beginning of November 2016, Nigel McGuinness shocked Ring of Honor and the world when he announced he was leaving the company effective immediately. Rumours soon started swirling round the industry that McGuinness was looking to create his own small company. These rumours were soon confirmed when McGuinness himself announced that he was the new owner and General Manager of APEX Pro Wrestling, (APEX for short), based out of the Mid Atlantic region of the US. He also announced APEX would be hosting their first show, APEX I: The Birth of Apex, on Thursday Wk 4 of November, just under 3 weeks away. It remains to be seen what kind of starting roster can be formed in such a short period of time, and we will be providing any updates on this as and when we can.
Wrestling Observer Newsletter - Friday Wk 2 November
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Last Friday we brought you the news that Nigel McGuinness had started his own independent company, APEX, in and around the Mid Atlantic. With just 3 weeks until Apex's first show, McGuinness was going to have to be busy signing talent to fill his initial roster, and it looks like he has working around the clock bringing in some of the best names from across the independent scene. Names we have been able to confirm have signed a contract with APEX so far are:

*The Aerial Assassin, Will Ospreay

*One of the most Exciting young prospects in professional wrestling, Lio Rush

*The experienced tag team of Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish, reDRagon

*Fresh from his performance in the WWE CWC, Drew Gulak

*Evolve World Champion, Timothy Thatcher

There are more names floating about, but it remains to be seen how much stock should be placed in these rumours. We'll bring you further updates as they are announced.

With less than a week to go until the debut show of Nigel McGuinness' new promotion APEX Pro Wrestling, details have been released revealing that the run time for the show will be around 2 hours. Further talent signings include:

*Matt and Nick Jackson, The Young Bucks

*The new ATTACK! Wrestling Champion, Mark Andrews

*The Knockout Artist, Chris Hero

*Harv and Gurv Sihra, The Bollywood Boys

There are also rumours that contracts have been offered to Matt Cross and Silas Young, although they aren't thought to have responded to these contract offers as of yet. McGuinness has also announced that the match card for the show won't be available until 24 hours before the event itself. We'll look to bring you these matches as soon as they are available, and will be reporting on the action itself.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter - Thursday Wk 4 November

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The match card for APEX I: The Birth of Apex has been announced, although there is no comment as to the order of the matches, and some names have been deliberately left blank to leave some surprises. The matches announced confirm the signings of both Matt Cross and Silas Young, as well as the signing of Chilean CWC competitor Alejandro Saez. The matches are as follows:
*Drew Gulak vs. Matt Cross
*The Bollywood Boys, Harv and Gurv Sihra vs. Lio Rush and Mark Andrews, who appear to be going by the name 'A Rush of Lightning'
*Chris Hero vs. Timothy Thatcher vs. Will Ospreay
*Alejandro Saez vs. Matt Riddle vs. Silas Young
*reDRagon vs. The Young Bucks vs. ???
The fact that Lio Rush and Mark Andrews are wrestling under a tag name indicates that McGuinness may be looking to push both competitors into the tag division to begin their time at APEX, although we have no idea how well they will work together as a team as they have no experience of tagging together in the past. It remains to be seen who will join reDRagon and The Young Bucks in that final match, but you can find out when we reveal the match results in tomorrows edition of the Newsletter.
Wrestling Observer Newsletter - Friday Wk 4 November
The results of APEX I: The Birth of Apex are in!
*The show starts with Nigel McGuinness in the ring, He explains his decisions behind leaving Ring of Honor, why he decided to create APEX and sets out his visions for the future. He also announces that he will be working as part of the commentary team alongside Matt Striker, and that Jim Korderas will be the referee for tonight.
Rating: 56|C-
*The first match of the night was a tag match that saw A Rush of Lightning defeat The Bollywood Boys in 12:28 when Lio Rush pinned Gurv Sihra following a Tag Team maneuver that I have been told has been dubbed 'Lightning Rush'. An ok match, clear to see that Rush and Andrews are still gelling but there is some chemistry there and it will be interesting to see how they develop as a team.
Rating: 42|D
*Following this, Matt Cross pinned Drew Gulak following the Death From Above 450 Corkscrew. Gulak was on top for a lot of the match following some early Cross playing to the crowd, but Cross rallied late to pick up the victory.
Rating: 50|D+
*The next match was the triple threat pitting Saez, Riddle and Young against each other. With two relatively inexperienced wrestlers in this match, the onus was really on Young to carry this match, and while he was certainly the strongest of the 3, the match ultimately felt quite mediocre. Silas Young picked up the victory, throwing Riddle out of the ring after the latter had performed the GTS on Saez and stealing the pin. This coupled with various little exchanges during and after the match appears to be setting up a small feud between Young and Riddle.
Rating: 40|D-
*The second to last match was the other triple threat, which saw Will Ospreay pin Chris Hero following a 630 splash. This was performed after Hero hit Thatcher with a devastating Elbow that knocked him out of the ring, and Ospreay hit the Springboard Cutter on Hero. All 3 guys looked good and the crowd was solidly behind this one.
Rating: 52|D+
*The main event, and undoubtedly the best match of the night, was the main event which saw reDRagon defeat The Young Bucks and the surprise team of Matt Sydal and Ricochet, reDRagon picking up the win over Matt Jackson following their 'Chasing the Dragon' tag maneuver, hit after The Young Bucks landed a Meltzer Driver on Matt Sydal. It appeared that Nick Jackson was harbouring a slight injury which caused him to have a limited involvement on the match and ultimately limited what could have been a top class match.
Rating: 60|C
Final Show Rating: 57|C-
While far from perfect this is a solid base from which APEX can build their company. They will be hoping that their footage of the show will be enough to encourage a deal with any potential broadcasters looking to air future APEX events, as the production value on show looked like APEX want to challenge the top companies in the region, as well as your more well known companies like NXT and of course McGuinness' former employers, Ring of Honor.
The title for the second APEX Wrestling show has been announced. APEX II: New Year, Same Attitude, will be held on Thursday Wk 2 of January 2017 and owner Nigel McGuinness will be hoping to build on a successful first show. Fans will be hoping many of the stars from the first show will be regulars and not only one-off stars to kick off the company. McGuiness has said he is remaining tight-lipped on the card for the event, but if we find out any matches we will let you know.</p>
That's an awesome roster. This is striking me as something like AAW, just an indy putting on the best possible cards with a surprising amount of talent. It doesn't seem like ROH, doesn't seem wacky like CHIKARA or funny like PWG. I wonder if you will try to develop more of an identity or if you will stick with something like the super indy cards. Still, I'm definitely interested.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</p><p>

The PWI 500 was really bizarre this year. Only two WWE superstars made it on the entire PWI 500. Two. Dolph Ziggler. And Simon Gotch. At #22 and #108. Nobody from NXT made it on the list. Kenny Omega was the first none Japanese wrestler at #10. TNA had 5 wrestlers, Drew Galloway, Grado, Jessie Godderz, Extreme Tiger (Tigre Uno) and Braxton Sutter. APEX have 8 wrestlers in the 500, Nick Jackson, Matt Jackson, Ricochet, Bobby Fish, Kyle O'Reilly, Matt Sydal, Will Ospreay and Chris Hero.</p><p> </p><p>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</p><p> </p><p>
After typing all that I looked at it again, scrolling down to the bottom and for some reason, there are only 139 wrestlers on the list. Bizarre.</p>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</p><p> </p><p>

It's the day after APEX II: New Year, Same Attitude and the match results are in.</p><p> </p><p>

*The show starts with Silas Young beating Matt Riddle after hitting him with a lowblow when the referee was distracted by a foreign object in the ring.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 45|D</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*The next match was Matt Cross vs. Timothy Thatcher, which Thatcher won by making Cross submit to The Thatcher Stretch.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 49|D+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*Following that match, Thatcher cuts a promo in-ring. He calls out the company and Nigel McGuinness for not having a Championship title, and that since he is the EVOLVE World Champion and the best wrestler in the company, he should be become the first APEX Champion. McGuinness comes out and says that although Thatcher is correct that APEX needs a Champion, the first champion will be decided over a 7 event Round Robin tournament containing 8 of the best wrestlers in the company. All of the non-tag matches tonight will be qualifiers for this tournament.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 50|D+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*Following on from that was the Triple Threat Tag Match, where the new young tag team A Rush of Lightning pick up another win over The Bollywood Boys and the debuting South Carolina Cavemen, when Andrews pinned Gurv Sihra following The Lightning Rush.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 43|D</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*The next match was a triple threat qualifying match for the APEX Championship Tournament where Will Ospreay defeated Jay Lethal and Tyson Dux when Ospreay pinned Dux following a Springboard Cutter.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 62|C</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*The Semi Main Event was an APEX Championship Tournament Qualifying match between Kyle O'Reilly and Matt Sydal which saw O'Reilly defeat Sydal by pinfall with a Brainbuster.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 58|C-</strong></p><p> </p><p>

*The Main Event was also an APEX Championship Tournament Qualifying match, between Bobby Fish and Ricochet where Ricochet pinned Fish after a Shooting Star Press.</p><p>

<strong>Rating: 67|C+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Final Show Rating: 64|C</strong></p><p>

A very solid second show by APEX, a nice improvement from the first show with the beginning of some storyline aspects and the creation of a championship tournament to crown their first champion.</p><p> </p><p>

The 8 Participants in the APEX Championship Tournament are:</p><p>

*Timothy Thatcher</p><p>

*Will Ospreay</p><p>

*Jay Lethal</p><p>

*Ricochet</p><p>

*Kyle O'Reilly</p><p>

*Silas Young</p><p>

*The winner of a fan vote</p><p>

*An unnamed wildcard</p><p> </p><p>
