WCW 1991: The Cowboys Way

Timeline 1991: Bill Watts

Sean Oliver: Obviously after Crockett brought the UWF you stepped away from the business, what made you come back?

Bill Watts: Well first it was the first time I had the opportunity to come to somewhere with the resources needed in this age, I talked to Verne but the pre-eminent domain suit was already in progress and it was bleeding him dry and I saw the writing was on the wall. Then Jimmy Crockett called me and asked me would I come to Atlanta as they had just removed Ole as booker after The Black Scorpion tanked and they wanted someone who the boys would get behind and JR and David had convinced Scott Sasser and Ted to look at some the old UWF tapes and they liked it.

Sean Oliver: When you came in what did you find?

Bill Watts: What found was a mess, they were making the same mistakes as Verne had and pissed away everything they had built in 89 so I started off making small subtle changes and tried to stop us looking like a cheap Vince knock off and brought it back to wrestling.

Sean Oliver: One thing a lot of people in the wrestling world noticed was that you didn’t make sweeping changes to the office why was that.

Bill Watts: I didn’t wanna make too many whole sale changes because we had story lines already in the mix nor did I wanna piss people off who I needed to work for me to turn the tide specially with the clash so close and Dusty seeing out his contract in New York. So I kept the first month simple and used it to wipe the board ready to start again.
