Old School Wrestling thread

Wow, do I feel really old. When I saw "Old School Wrestling thread" I was honestly expecting something a bit older. I guess it would be old school now though. Loved the work of RVD and Jerry Lynn for years. "It doesn't make you bad losing to Rob Van Dam... it just makes you like everybody else." - "I'm the NEW *'* Show!"

<p>I was expecting something a bit older too lol. I'm watching Raw 1996 and it's really not that bad. I'm in March, getting into Wrestlemania 12 and Bret vs Shawn, Diesel vs Taker feuds has been interesting.</p><p> </p><p>

Also, The ringmaster <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Also, The ringmaster :p

Austin's early days, him and Kane are proof you can recover from a bad gimmick if repackaged correctly.

Yeah when I saw the name of the thread I was thinking along the lines of Haystacks Calhoun, Bruno, or Harley Race. ECW does not feel like an "old school" (I hate that term) promotion to me but sadly it is now.

I miss the fans who thought wrestling was real. Back when I first started watching the fans would actually be very into the show because they thought it was real. I remember this old man trying to jump the guardrail in order to fight Bad News Brown just because it looked as if BNB was going to be Hulk for the WWF World Title.

I miss when the fans used to throw garbage in the ring. You hardly ever see that anymore which is understandable because of the potential safety issue it could cause.

The very last time I can recall seeing garbage being thrown in the ring was when Hulk Hogan joined the NWO....that was flat out nuclear heat.

<p>Kinda funny when you consider how much the crowds were starting to cool on him over the year or 2 beforehand.</p><p> </p><p>

Looking back on learning about Glenn Jacobs playing "Doomsday" in USWA, I just realized that early Kane was just "Doomsday as Undertaker's brother". <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

Did Doomsday ever take on 'Taker when he was Punisher? Cuz that would be funny on a comic book level - "Doomsday versus The Punisher!"</p>

<p>Wow. Latter era ECW being described as "old school?" </p><p> </p><p>

That makes me feel OLD! AndI'm only 32 <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Mind you, look at some of those guys now - Sabu for instance - and you can see just how long it's been since that ECW heyday...</p>

<p>I've been taking what I like to call "a spiritual journey through 1992" via the WWE Network, and I've seen a bunch of shows I enjoyed. In my opinion, WCW took a definite downturn after Bill Watts took power that year. Making it illegal for a wrestler to jump off the top rope, how could anyone even think that was a good idea? </p><p> </p><p>

Honestly think the best show I've seen during this journey was WrestleMania 8. The Intercontinental title match between Bret Hart and Roddy Piper was a classic, and the WWF Championship match between Ric Flair and Randy Savage was phenomenal! Even better than I remembered it being. Even the Hulk Hogan - Sid match was.... a lot better than any match pitting Hulk Hogan against Sid Viscous had any right to be. VERY good show.</p><p> </p><p>

Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Lyger from SuperBrawl of that year was also a very good match. I know I loved that match as a kid, and I think it was the thing that kicked off my fandom for the cruiserweights.</p>
