WWF 1987: Golden Memoirs

Recommended Posts

Good stuff Matt, it all sounds like you're doing well with 87. Hennig and Genius is a - pun intended - genius pairing, just as they were in real life. I look forward to his rise to the top, same with DiBiase. Hogan vs. Woman's group is a nice, very 80s feud, and it will buy some time until the eventual Hogan vs. Multi-million Dollar Man matches that have to come soon. I do like the Family being tied to Ted through, it makes sense given the greedy character that Bobby was always portrayed as.

<p>Thank you, Beejus! <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/cool.png.f00d2562b2c1d873a09323753efdb041.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

It's been a lot of fun playing this save, and hopefully it never disappoints. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but I think you'll like what I have in store for not only the Multi Million Dollar Man (as Hogan liked to call him), but Perfect as well. And for all the tag team fans out there, I think you'll all like what I have in store for the tag team division as well.</p>

<p>Hey Matt,</p><p> </p><p>

I want to second a lot of Beejus said. I'm enjoying this read a lot as well. My standout it Honky at the moment. I love the campaign to ban the DDT and the trips to "Greatland." Danny Davis is a nice little touch to this program too--the courrpt official helping the heel get the rules bent to his liking.</p>

Honky has been quite the pleasant surprise for me thus far as far as not stirring up trouble goes. I already knew I'd get good scores out of him, but didn't expect him to not be too much of a pain. Probably helps that he has good morale, & I have a locker room leader like Harley Race. Without giving away too much, I'll say that everything you all see him achieve has definitely been earned</p><p> </p><p> Danny's involvement is basically to give Tito something to do. He's another guy who has been a good reliable hand.</p>

<p>So I finally got around to looking back at the KOTR predictions and counted six people who predicted the entire tournament correctly. So what shall do, you ask? I will contact them directly via PM and they will get to choose either a worker or company circa June 1987 for me to highlight with a Dave Meltzer-style write-up.</p><p> </p><p>

As for my next show post, look for it to go up sometime within the next week.</p>

For those wondering where the former Midnight Rockers (now simply the Rockers) have been, fear not. The injury angle that was done back in May was simply to give them some time off while also getting them ready for a possible feud with Demolition. The Bulldogs making the save for the Rockers was to give Ax and Smash a team to work with while the Rockers are out in storyline. It's also been said that the angle has helped put Demolition over as a near unstoppable menacing team. Expect the Rockers to return some time after WrestleFest. There are also rumors that the Islanders could be thrown into this feud, making it a feud of two babyface tag teams against two heel tag teams.</span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

While Hulk Hogan is definitely the draw for WWF fans, the two best storylines in my opinion right now have to be Roddy Piper vs. Macho Man and Honky Tonk Man vs. Jake Roberts respectively, and those two storylines had a chance to intermingle on a recent Superstars taping. Rowdy Roddy Piper was hosting Piper's Pit, with his scheduled guest of Jake "The Snake" Roberts. However, Honky Tonk Man made good on his promise to protest Jake's appearances at WWF events, with him and Jimmy Hart bringing signs that said "BAN THE DDT!" Jake and Piper finally had enough and were about to get their hands on the cowardly heels until Macho Man ran in and attacked both guys from behind, leading to a beatdown from both he and Honky Tonk Man. For my money, Randy Savage and Honky Tonk Man have to be the number one and two heels respectively right now, although Ted DiBiase is gaining on both of them with his Million Dollar Man character. Vince seems to have a lot of faith in DiBiase, having him win this year's King Of The Ring tournament. Aligning him with the Heenan Family doesn't hurt, either.</span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Sting was brought into the wrestling business at the same time as the Dingo Warrior, and they had teamed up with each other in the Mid South territory (now the UWF) as the Blade Runners, with Eddie Gilbert as their manager. Sting and Eddie would win the UWF Tag Team Titles in 1986, eventually dropping them to the Fantastics in the fall of that year. Ever since, Sting seems to have been underutilized, only wrestling at the monthly Superdome shows put on by Bill Watts. However, his only two matches within the past two months have been victories against the up and coming Shane Douglas on the March Superdome show, and against Savannah Jack on the May Superdome show. If Bill Watts doesn't pull the trigger on the Stinger, Vince may be giving Sting a call sooner rather than later.</span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Over in the world of All Japan Pro Wrestling, Giant Baba's group seems to be putting out good to very good shows on a consistent basis, save for an off night here and there. Baba has a lot of faith in Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu, as they seem to have had a stranglehold on the NWA International Tag Team Titles since February of this year. Both men have singles gold as well, with Tsuruta currently reigning as NWA International Champion, and Tenryu as NWA United National Champion. Riki Chosu is still top dog in his own right as he still reigns as PWF World Heavyweight Champion. The PWF World Tag Team Titles were vacated when Ted DiBiase signed with the WWF. Why they didn't simply do a switch before he left is anyone's guess. But Takashi Ishikawa and Mighty Inoue won the vacant titles this past April, defeating Goro Tsurumi and Rusher Kimura. </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

However, All Japan should be lauded for the effort they put out with their recent Super Power Series card. The highlights for me were Masanobu Fuchi retaining the Junior Heavyweight Title over Yoshinari Ogawa; Genichiro Tenryu defeating the Super Strong Machine; and in what may very well go down as the Match of the Year, Riki Chosu defeated Tiger Mask II to retain his PWF World Heavyweight Championship.</span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

A look at All Japan wouldn't be complete without seeing what Stan Hansen has been up to. He has been very consistent with his ring work in the Land of the Rising Sun, and hopefully he is back in some sort of title picture in the near future. His lowest rated match so far this year came against Super Strong Machine last month on one of All Japan's touring shows, a match that I rated at ***3/4. Pretty stout if I may say so myself. While not winning either title, he has had very good title challenges against both Jumbo Tsuruta and Riki Chosu for the NWA International and PWF World Heavyweight Titles respectively. It seems that Hansen hasn't missed a step since Ted DiBiase left for the WWF this past spring.</span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="font-family:System;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Back in the US, we take a look at one of the Four Horsemen, Arn Anderson of Jim Crockett Promotions. Double A should be in line for some NWA championship gold sooner rather than later as he and his fellow Horsemen continue to feud with the top babyfaces of JCP. Arn has recently defeated Dusty Rhodes on an edition of World Championship Wrestling, and took on Nikita Koloff in a losing effort for the NWA United States Championship at the Eddie Graham Memorial Show. There are rumors of a possible Four Horsemen split, and Arn Anderson could possibly be turning babyface. We will keep you up to date if that turns out to be the case. Unless Jim Crockett Jr. really makes Double A mad and causes him to ask for a release, don't expect the Enforcer of the Horsemen to leave anytime soon as he seems to be tied up under an exclusive deal for the foreseeable future.</span></span></em></strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Thank you, Monk. In my summarizing of the goings-on in the WWF, I noticed that I had failed to mention the "injury" angle I did with Demolition and the Rockers. That's where me posting a Dave Meltzer bit came in handy. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">They say you can always go back home, and that's exactly what we did before heading off to Milwaukee for WrestleFest, as our last two Main Event shows before the big stadium show were in Madison Square Garden and the Boston Garden respectively. We would also visit the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and Worcester Centrum, big hotbeds for us as well, for the last two sets of Superstars and Challenge tapings before WrestleFest.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

It seemed that my efforts to provide the best in sports entertainment were paying off as we sold out every single one of those shows, and the buzz going around was that we had managed to sell out Milwaukee County Stadium, home of Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers. Part of my efforts was making sure we introduced fresh new talent, such as Owen Hart. However, I opted to first present him as a masked wrestler known as the Blue Blazer, a wholesome superhero type who encouraged kids to stay in school, don't do drugs, and most importantly, drink your milk so you could grow up to be healthy like him and many of their favorite wrestlers! Yes, cheesy as all get out, but it allowed me to give him something to do and build himself up, while also having him put heels over that I needed to get over without killing his credibility. That's where the mask came in. He wasn't keen on it at first until I reminded him that this was a temporary character.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

In keeping with building up new talent, we debuted a new exciting team: Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, the Rockers. They were previously the Midnight Rockers in the AWA, but I opted to drop the Midnight from their name. It wasn't long before they had something they could sink their teeth into as we ran an injury angle where Demolition won a match against them several weeks back after injuring them to the point that they couldn't continue. But that wasn't enough: they had to keep beating those pretty boys down! So naturally out came the British Bulldogs to stop the onslaught. We would then run a satellite style interview where Demolition were in Mr. Fuji's chamber on one side of the screen, and the Rockers were at a medical facility on the other side of the screen, with Shawn in a wheel chair and holding crutches, and Marty's arm in a sling. The look on Demolition's and Mr. Fuji's faces were priceless as Shawn defiantly stood up out of his wheel chair and threw down the crutches, while Marty took off his sling. They promised Demolition that they were going to be rehabbing and training to come back and get revenge on them when they least expected it.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

We headlined the MSG show with Honky Tonk Man and "Macho Man" Randy Savage going to a double disqualification with Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Rowdy Roddy Piper. I was big on protecting all four men in this one and let them have a wild brawl to send the New York fans home happy. The show wasn't over for our viewing audience, though, as we closed it with a sit down interview conducted by Gorilla Monsoon as he talked with Hulk Hogan about his upcoming title match against the Ugandan Giant, Kamala. Hogan looked a lot more subdued than he normally was for his interviews. Fans were used to seeing him all hyped up and not afraid of his opposition, no matter who it was. On this occasion, however, Hogan had the sense to come across more human than superhuman, discussing with Gorilla how he actually believed his career was in jeopardy after the beatdown he had received in Dallas at the hands of Woman's Dark Circle (Kamala, Undertaker and Dan Spivey). But he trudged on, accepting a non-title match with Spivey recently, and receiving the same post-match beatdown as he won by disqualification. However, this time, he was saved by a number of other wrestlers who weren't going to stand idly by. At this point, Hogan went from quiet and humble, evolving into that machine gun hyperdrive style we came to know and love, telling Woman that if those other wrestlers weren't afraid of her Dark Circle, then "BY GOD! HE WASN'T GOING TO BE AFRAID OF THEM EITHER, SISTER!" He told Woman and Kim Chee that they better have Kamala trained at his absolute best, because he was ready to tear him apart.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

Meanwhile, over on the Superstars taping in Buffalo, New York, we promoted Missy Hyatt's talk segment from Wrestling Challenge to Superstars, and was it ever a dandy as she brought out Tito Santana, badgering him about the troubles he has had over the last year, losing the Intercontinental Title, and having trouble recently with Danny Davis after he decided to support Jake "The Snake" Roberts' right to use the DDT. Every time Tito tried to speak, Missy would take the mic away from him and go on and on. Just when Tito was about to finally speak, out came the former referee turned wrestler, Danny Davis, who taunted Santana. Tito finally had enough, and a big brawl broke out between the two that saw several undercard and local workers run out to get them separated.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

Our Main Event show in Beantown went down well, though I felt it could have been better. We had Craig DeGeorge conduct an interview with the Tag Team Champions, the Hart Foundation. Conspicuous by his absence was Jimmy Hart. Craig questioned them about this and Hart's concern about what kind of threat the Rougeaus posed to the Harts, as well as complimenting them on how good they were. The Hart Foundation denied any dissension, noting that they agreed with Jimmy that the Rougeaus were a great team that they knew were a legitimate threat to their Tag Team Titles. As for Jimmy Hart, they brushed it off as Jimmy getting easily worked up like he always does, and that's what they felt made him the best manager in the WWF, as it always motivated them to be the best they could. In fact, they felt the Rougeaus could be useful allies to help keep the other tag teams at bay. In weeks prior, we had the Rougeaus take some time off after their big victory at WrestleMania III, then return and take on babyface tag teams in "clean and scientific" style matches. The bit, here, was that they would break the rules, then deny it and/or claim ignorance, citing the differences in wrestling styles from Quebec and the US. They would also make claims that French was their first language and that it sometimes confused them. This was a great way for them to team up with a heel like Magnficent Muraco, because they could claim that they misread the contract and thought they were signing to wrestle against him, but it was too late and they couldn't back out now.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

The highlight of the night for our Main Event show in Boston no doubt was the aftermath of Tito Santana vs. Honky Tonk Man. Honky Tonk managed to get the upset victory when Jimmy Hart distracted the referee, allowing him to "drop" the megaphone into the ring. Tito threatened Honky with it, but kicked it off to the side because he was going to beat him the good, clean way! That allowed Danny Davis to run in from the crowd, grab the megaphone and blast Tito with it. He scurried out of the ring just as fast as he got in and ducked down so that the ref couldn't see him as Honky Tonk Man covered Tito Santana for the victory. After the match, Danny and Honky Tonk put the boots to Tito until Jake "The Snake" Roberts ran in, opened the bag and let Damien out, scaring Danny and Honky Tonk as they scattered out of the ring and ran for their lives all the way to the back. Jake chased Jimmy Hart around with Damien, and as Jimmy ran into the ring, he tripped over Tito, who was getting back up, and fell over onto his back. Trapped, Jake grabbed a hold of Jimmy, held him in a front facelock for what seemed like forever as the roar of the crowd was getting louder and louder. They came unglued when Jake hit Jimmy Hart with the DDT, sending a message to Honky Tonk Man for the tag match at WrestleFest pitting Jake and Tito against Honky Tonk and Danny.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

We closed out the Boston show with Hulk Hogan winning a battle royal, with the Dark Circle conspicuous by their absence. The story here was that Hogan needed to get back on track, and this battle royal showed that Hogan might have finally gone back to being the Hogan we all know and love. But we would know for certain come WrestleFest as he took on Kamala.</span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;"> </span></em></strong></p><p><strong><em><span style="color:#000080;">

The Superstars taping in Worcester for whatever reason seemed to come off as a better show even though it was mainly meant to be a last minute hype job for PPV buys for WrestleFest. We hyped up the entire card, and put a huge emphasis on the two big matches for the card: Hogan vs. Kamala for the WWF Championship, and Macho Man vs. Roddy Piper in a Career Ending Match. We closed out the show with Roddy Piper defeating Harley Race by pinfall as he showed no signs of going away anytime soon.</span></em></strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>OOC: I will be posting the WrestleFest card soon and will have another prediction contest. Prize will be determined.</strong></p>

I'm going to go ahead and leave this open for a few days more for anyone that wants to get predictions in. I've decided to take up Beejus' suggestion from awhile back and put more detail into the PPV shows, complete with graphics, grades, etc.

It was a good way to get the Milwaukee crowd going, and the match started off with a wild melee involving all ten men, with the faces getting the upper hand to start, clearing the ring of all the heels. Mr. Fuji would try to get involved, only for the Bulldogs to get a hold of Matilda and have her chasing Fuji out of the ring, tripping and falling on the way out, with Jesse Ventura noting that Mr. Fuji somehow managed to keep his derby from falling off his head. The Killer Bees, meanwhile, hit Slick with a double dropkick when he tried to distract the ref, knocking him down to the floor. Gorilla made mention that the Rockers must have been enjoying watching this as they were recovering at home while they were waiting to be cleared to return to action. The heels would get the upper hand, working over Jim Brunzell and preventing him from making the hot tag until he was finally able to tag out to B. Brian Blair. The heels would all rush in, prompting the rest of the babyfaces to rush in, causing the ref to lose control and get distracted as the wrestlers wound up tumbling to the outside in the ensuing melee. This allowed One Man Gang to grab a hold of his chain, wrap it around his fist and knock Brian Blair out cold. Gang put away the chain right before the ref turned around to see him on top of Blair following a 747 Splash to get the pinfall.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners: Butch Reed, the Twin Towers & Demolition</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 80</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/UMwAZZw.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/1XVJ5Ma.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/st63Utw.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/xw4n0bz.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/0ToYqG6.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Gorilla threw it back to Mean Gene Okerlund, who was backstage recapping for us that he was getting ready to conduct an interview with the Sirens (Debra Dallas & Alundra Blayze) when the Glamour Girls (Leilani Kai & Judy Martin) barged in and started arguing with them, telling them that they should be interviewed. Mean Gene finally had enough of the back and forth yelling and shouted "DAMMIT, YOU LADIES GET A HOLD OF YOURSELVES!"</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/mhO6kmA.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> President Jack Tunney had heard about the commotion and decided to see what the fuss was all about. Both teams of ladies made claims that they were the next rightful challengers for the winners of tonight's Women's Tag Team Championship bout. Both teams had a good argument, as both had good win-loss records recently, although the Glamour Girls did have a point when they mentioned that they were the previous champions before the Prankster Punks and never lost the titles as they were stripped of the titles due to injury. They also pointed out that the Sirens had just arrived and hadn't defeated a lot of teams of note. President Tunney decided that the best solution would be that the Glamour Girls would get their chance to regain the titles first, then the Sirens would receive a title shot at a later date if they could defeat the Glamour Girls in a match that would be coming up the following Tuesday on The Main Event.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 69</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/jZ3loAe.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/jZ3loAe.jpg</span><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WWF Women's Tag Team Championship</span></strong></p><p><strong> The Prankster Punks (Champions) vs. Ladies Night (Challengers)</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/MdTHrpo.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/XNtbZ1A.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/HuZqYAP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/JlCbqT1.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/1l4wKZw.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> After winning the vacant titles on The Main Event back in May, it was time for Hollywood & Vine to put the titles up for grabs against the team they initially defeated to win the titles. Desiree Petersen was a proven commodity, and I knew it would be good to put her in the ring with Rockin' Robin, Hollywood & Vine if I wanted those three to improve their in-ring skills. Ladies Night came close on more than one occasion to winning the titles, but the Prankster Punks came out on top after tossing Robin out of the ring and hitting Desiree with their new tag team finisher, the Punk Girl Buster. The best way to describe their double team maneuver was that it was both ladies bringing Desiree down on the back of her head with a Double Reverse DDT. A three count later, and the Punks retained.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners & Still Champions: The Prankster Punks</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 57</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/s6rt25J.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/wxF7bY3.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/mcoyabX.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Gorilla threw it to Ken Resnick, who was standing by to interview Mr. Fuji and the "Magnificent" Don Muraco. Fuji was grinning from ear to ear as he talked about how he and Slick worked well together to get their respective clients on the same page to win the earlier 10-man tag, and now Don Muraco was going to regain the Intercontinental Title. Muraco talked about how he had always had Steamboat's number, and brought up that Steamboat always seemed to avoid him and instead would opt to take on Mr. Fuji, underestimating the deviousness of the former wrestler turned manager. Muraco said there was no avoiding him anymore, and now the Intercontinental Championship would come back to him as a cloud of darkness was surrounding the Dragon.</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/1lSQskQ.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/8YbefrK.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Ken sent it to Craig DeGeorge, who was standing by with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Steamboat countered that it wasn't him, but Muraco, that was doing the avoiding and would put Fuji in front of him to keep from having to face the fire of the Dragon. Steamboat talked about the number of times he had defended the title since winning it at WrestleMania III, turning away the challenges of Hercules, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Adrian Adonis, and even had the chance to defend the title in a great, clean wrestling clinic against Davey Boy Smith of the British Bulldogs. Now it was time to turn away the challenge of an enemy that he had unfinished business with. Craig and Steamboat did stumble a bit, but they wound up getting the point across.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 81</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/OG2EF33.jpg</span><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>WWF Intercontinental Championship</strong></span></p><p><strong> Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (Champion) vs. "Magnificent" Don Muraco (Challenger) w/Mr. Fuji</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/1lSQskQ.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/HuZqYAP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/wxF7bY3.jpg</span> <strong>W/</strong><span>http://i.imgur.com/s6rt25J.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> There was no love lost between these two old arch rivals, going back to where they left off when they last met over a year and a half earlier. This time, however, there was much more at stake as the Intercontinental Title was up for grabs. Steamboat had the advantage early on, but Muraco overpowered him with his brute strength and brawling ability to take control of the match. Muraco seemed to have the match in hand as he looked up towards the press box and pointed toward Jesse Ventura, dedicating his finishing Reverse Piledriver to him. However, he spent too much time dedicating the move, allowing Steamboat to reverse out of it and roll him up for a near fall, with Muraco barely kicking out at two and a half. The two men fought back and forth, but wouldn't you know it? The referee got bowled over when Muraco ducked out of the way of a running cross body attempt from Steamboat. This allowed Mr. Fuji to reach down into his pocket and grab some of his ceremonial "salt." Muraco had a hold of Steamboat, and Fuji went to throw the "salt." But Steamboat ducked, and the powder went flying into Muraco's face, temporarily blinding him as Steamboat knocked Fuji down with a knife edge chop. Sadly, Fuji's derby fell off this time around, to which Jesse responded "OH THAT'S HORRIBLE! First the people of Milwaukee have to suffer seeing the Bucks lose to the Celtics, and now they have seen Fuji's hat fall off his head!" With Muraco stunned and trying to find his place, this allowed Steamboat to climb up to the top turnbuckle and hit him with the Flying Cross Body just as the ref got back up. Many insiders expected Steamboat to drop the title over the course of the summer to be with his family, but we had worked out a deal to where he temporarily didn't have to work house shows and only had to do some TV in exchange for him having the chance to be with his wife and newborn son.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner & Still Champion: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat</strong></p><p> <strong>Grade: 81</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/UMwAZZw.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/EoTvTgP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/T7RKbb4.jpg</span><p> </p><p> We had been building our women's division and in doing so, we would air vignettes with more than a few of our ladies to get the fans familiar with them. They talked about how excited they were to be coming to the WWF when they would be rudely interrupted.</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/95D6ebK.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Janeen Jewett had previously worked in GLOW as Palestina the Terrorist. I enjoyed her work, and with the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff gone, I thought now would be a good time to bring in a female version of the evil foreigner gimmick. However, I shortened Janeen's name to simply Palestina as I didn't think "Palestina the Terrorist" would be a good name for marketing. She showed up to interrupt this interview, introducing herself as Palestina and ranting about the trouble that America had brought to her homeland. She ranted about how Americana and Ivory represented everything that was wrong with America and gave them a warning that she would strike when they would least expect it. It was obvious that the three ladies were just getting their feet wet, but Mean Gene was a big help for them to get the point of this segment across.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 66</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/Y3MMu5V.jpg</span><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>WWF Women's Championship</strong></span></p><p><strong> Sensational Sherri (Champion) vs. Velvet McIntyre (Challenger)</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/GYnEWVq.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/HuZqYAP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/V4THQks.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Velvet McIntyre was a good women's champion for us, but Sherri Martel (now Sensational Sherri) had become white hot thanks in part to her past stint in the AWA and her much publicized pictorial in XTC Magazine. Well, not publicized by us, save from tongue-in-cheek comments from Jesse Ventura such as "She is in ecstasy now after having won the Women's Championship." She was also a great heel, and all of this led to her to surpassing Fabulous Moolah in terms of being the most over female grappler in the company. While Velvet might have been slightly better in terms of in-ring ability, Sherri definitely had more of the star presence. Sherri's star presence coupled with Velvet's skills made for a suprisingly great bout as the fans were cheering Velvet on as she came close on more than one occasion to becoming a three time Women's Champion. However, Sherri would trap Velvet in the corner, pin her down and put her feet on the ropes out of sight of the referee to retain the title.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner & Still Champion: Sensational Sherri</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 80</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/0EoSjUF.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/B7h3c7D.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/iIM9JtZ.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/Bc6bgFI.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Backstage, Missy Hyatt was standing by to interview the Honky Tonk Man, Jimmy Hart and Danny Davis. Honky and Danny tried to run away and get themselves counted out at one point, only for Jake and Tito to catch up to them and throw them back into the ring. Order would be restored as the heels regained control and cut the ring in half as they kept Jake in the ring for some time. Jake would make the hot tag to Tito, who came in like a house of fire. Tito nailed Danny Davis with the Flying Forearm, but Jimmy Hart jumped onto the ring apron to distract Tito. The ref pleaded with Tito not to get tied up with Jimmy, but Jake grabbed Jimmy off the ring apron and chased him to the back, with Jimmy running all the way to the back and Jake stopping in the aisle before going back to ringside. Meanwhile, Honky Tonk ran in and rolled Tito up, grabbing a handful of tights as the ref was so flustered that he forgot who the legal man was and counted to three.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners: Honky Tonk Man & Danny Davis</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 81</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/Bc6bgFI.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/B7h3c7D.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/1dUEwMO.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/0lKeErU.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Danny Davis had come to thanks in part to Honky Tonk helping him up. This distracted the referee while Koko had DiBiase down for a pinfall. Koko went to get the referee's attention, who told Koko to back off while he got Brutus and the Marvelous Ones separated. Koko turned around and saw DiBiase getting back up. He went running towards DiBiase, who caught Koko and brought him down hard with a powerslam. However, there were a few reasons for this. For starters, with the implications of Piper/Macho Man, I could not justify putting this match on last. Second, I knew this match wouldn't outshine Piper/Macho Man, and I didn't want to end the show on a lower than high note. It was still a really good match, however. It was pretty much a wild brawl, which was a bit taxing on the larger Kamala's stamina, which is why I didn't go over 12 minutes for this one. We saw the usual Hogan power punches and clotheslines, and Kamala getting his licks in on the Hulkster and dominating until it was time for the Hulk Up. That's when Woman started whispering in Kim Chee's ear before walking toward the back and motioning for some reason. Kamala's last few punches weren't fazing Hogan as he punched back, sent Kamala into the ropes and stunned him with a big boot, then bodyslammed him to a nice pop from the crowd. Hogan ran the ropes and hit the Big Leg Drop... ONE!... TWO!... That's when Kim Chee ran in and attacked Hogan, prompting a disqualification. Hogan was getting the better of Kim Chee until Dan Spivey and the Undertaker ran in. They helped Kamala attack Hogan, but this time, he was fighting them off. Woman screamed at them to get out and live to fight another day. They got out, staring down Hogan, who celebrated his victory because DAMMIT! After their big WrestleMania win against the Dream Team, the Rougeaus took some time away and came back, seemingly with a different style than what our fans had been used to. Suspicions arose when they took shortcuts to win matches against other fan favorite tag teams, but they would either deny the cheating or claim that with them being from Quebec, they would sometimes get their French and English confused. What was interesting was how Jimmy Hart had acknowledged what a legitimate threat they had become to the Hart Foundation's Tag Team Titles. The Harts seemed to block that out of their minds as they concentrated on defending the gold against the Rougeaus. As much as I loved the work of these four men, I didn't want them overshadowing the upcoming main event, so I had them ease up a bit and tell the story in the ring. The Hart Foundation looked like they had the match won after hitting Raymond Rougeau with the Hart Attack. However, Jimmy Hart of all people decided to jump up onto the apron and distract the referee. The Harts didn't notice this at first as Bret Hart went for the cover. However, when a few seconds went by without a count, he turned and looked at what was going on. Jim Neidhart got up to confront the Mouth of the South as well. With the ref tied up, Jimmy Hart "dropped" his patented megaphone into the ring. Bret went to go pick up Raymond, only for Jacques to pick up the megaphone and blast him in the back of the head with it! Jacques then dropkicked Jim Neidhart as he turned around after missing a wild haymaker directed at Jimmy Hart, who ducked down and got off the ring apron. Raymond crawled over and covered the Hitman, and the ref, none the wiser, made the three count.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners & NEW WWF World Tag Team Champions: The Rougeau Brothers</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 82</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/g9suIja.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/er8nYGj.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/2MNsJYJ.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/GotICKN.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/HdrJE83.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Yes, I turned the Rougeaus heel when it became apparent that their babyface act wasn't going to catch on with the fans. And it worked like a charm. They didn't get any time to celebrate with their newly won Tag Team Titles as Jim Neidhart regained his bearings and chased them out of the ring. The Anvil eyed Jimmy Hart and jumped out of the ring, giving chase after him around ringside. Jimmy ran into the ring, not realizing that Bret Hart had come to from being hit with the megaphone, though he was still smarting a bit. Jimmy backed up against Bret, turned around and took a big gulp. Before he could escape, he bumped into the Anvil, who hoisted him up into a bear hug. Bret ran the ropes, jumped and nailed poor Jimmy as Jesse Ventura called him with a clothesline, hitting the Hart Attack on their now former manager. The fans definitely bought into the Hart Foundation's turn over to the light, and after the match, Gorilla and Jesse discussed what had gone down. Gorilla was wondering why on earth Jimmy Hart would sell the Hart Foundation down the river when despite winning the Tag Team Titles the way they did, they had showed on more than one occasion that they were more than capable of holding onto the gold. Jesse stated that maybe Jimmy felt that the Hart's best days were behind them and why not go with the hot team in the Rougeaus. "Gorilla, it's like when a football team has a quarterback for years who leads them to multiple titles, but then that quarterback gets injured and the second stringer gets a chance to play. Then that second stringer plays lights out, to the point that the coach has no choice but to make him the new starter." Gorilla disagreed and said that the Harts were far from finished and that Jimmy Hart would one day pay for this traitorous act.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 85</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/UMwAZZw.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/2dsXOXP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/7Ht56jU.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Mean Gene was standing by with the "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Elizabeth, noting the seriousness of this interview by stating "This very well could be the last time I get to talk to you like this Randy, and if it is... let me say that while we have had our difference of opinions, believe it or not, I have had a lot of fun interviewing you as it's never dull." Randy responded not with the typical heel response, but in a more somber tone than normal. He agreed that it very well could be the last time we see Macho Madness, but he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that was the case. Either way, he knew that the WWF was not big enough for both him and the Hot Rod, and one of them would have to go. Miss Elizabeth, needless to say, looked more worried than anyone, and to everyone's amazement, Randy let her speak her piece without interruption. She talked about how despite what everyone had seen on TV, Randy actually was a much better human being outside of the ring when the cameras were off and while she hoped neither man got hurt, she hoped that Macho Man won because the only thing she wanted was for fans to finally get to see the side of Macho Man that she gets to see when the cameras are off.</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/2bgsis2.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/dsQJeT3.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> The camera feed switched over to me standing by with the Hot Rod, again to add emphasis to the importance of this match. Piper was more subdued than usual as well. He talked about what a wild ride this had been for him; how a skinny wild eyed teenage boy got his butt whooped by Mr. Perfect's dad in his first pro match, yet he never backed down and continued to grow as a man and became the bad dude that he is today. That said, he wasn't ready for it all to end tonight, and he was going to fight tooth and nail to make sure his career would continue because while he had accomplished a lot, there was still more left for him to accomplish.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 100</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="</p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/P9k1EvSX7W0" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/P9k1EvSX7W0"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><p> </p><p> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="<a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GQDOjPkECHY" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/GQDOjPkECHY"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Career vs. Career</span></strong></p><p><strong> "Macho Man" Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/2dsXOXP.jpg</span> W/<span>http://i.imgur.com/7Ht56jU.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/HuZqYAP.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/2bgsis2.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> The time for talking was over. The participants had made their entrances, and now it was time for a match of epic proportions. Both men stared each other down as the crowd was buzzing with excitement. After what seemed like an eternity, fists started flying and we were under way. Randy would eventually get the upper hand, but he wasn't able to put the Hot Rod away. Piper fought back and had Randy on the defensive on numerous occasions, with Elizabeth grimacing with each near fall, letting out a huge sigh of relief every time the Macho Man either kicked out or got his shoulder up. While it was never stated that there were no disqualifications or count outs (in fact, Gorilla and Jesse noted how careful these two needed to be not to have either event happen to them), the referee decided it would be best to show some leniency. That meant counting slower than usual when the two would fight outside of the ring, and counting slower than normal when they were both lying down on the canvas from a double clothesline. Randy Savage would get the upper hand once again, and he seemed to have Piper done for after hitting him with a double axe handle smash to the head from the top rope, but Piper barely got his shoulder up at two and three quarters. </p><p> </p><p> Frustrated, the Macho Man went to the outside and shoved Howard Finkel out of his seat, picking it up and bringing it into the ring. The Macho Man looked like he was lifting the chair up as the referee yelled that if he got disqualified, it was all over. He lifted the chair over his head, hesitant to use it. Finally, Elizabeth screamed for him not to use it, and he tossed it aside. Jesse said that normally he would be saying that Macho Man had gone soft, but with what was on the line, even he had to admit it was smart not to smash the chair over Roddy Piper. The hesitation, however, led to a comeback from Piper. The Hot Rod threw the Macho Man into the ropes and locked him in a Sleeper Hold on the way back. The crowd came unglued, knowing that Macho Man's career could be fading away just as he was fading away in the sleeper. Elizabeth was getting more and more worried as the Macho Man was slowly dropping down to his knees, then into a seated position as it seemed like he was finished. The referee lifted his arm up once... it dropped down. He lifted it up a second time... it dropped down. A third time... but just as it was dropping down, the Macho Man grabbed a hold of it and stopped it from going down all the way, keeping him in the match. </p><p> </p><p> Piper couldn't believe it as he tried to keep the hold on, but Macho Man broke free and fought back. After some back and forth, Macho Man was able to knock Piper down with a running clothesline, then went to climb the top rope. He looked out around the crowd, who was buzzing with anticipation of what was to come. He looked down at Piper, then pointed his fingers up in the air and came crashing down with a Flying Elbow Smash that connected with fierce impact. Savage with the cover... ONE... TWO... THR-NOOO! Somehow, some way, Rowdy Roddy Piper managed to barely get his shoulder up as Macho Man laid down over him, the camera catching a close up of the look of disbelief on his face. Both Gorilla and Jesse were shocked, noting that was Macho Man's patented maneuver and how they didn't remember anyone ever kicking out of it. But while Piper got his shoulder up, it looked as if he wasn't getting back up. Macho Man decided to go to the top rope again, but this time seemed hesitant. Piper rolled over, looked up at Randy and motioned for him to give him his best shot as it seemed that Piper knew he couldn't get back up. Macho Man came flying down off the top turnbuckle, landing a second Flying Elbow Smash. ONE... TWO... THREE!</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: "Macho Man" Randy Savage</strong></p><p><strong> Rowdy Roddy Piper must retire</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: 100</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43279" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/2bgsis2.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/2dsXOXP.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Elizabeth ran in to check on Macho Man, who was slow to get back to his feet. Piper was rolling over, trying to regain his bearings as well. The referee tried to help him up, but he shoved the referee away, insisting that he get up on his own accord. Elizabeth helped Macho Man back to his feet as Roddy Piper slowly managed to get back to his own feet. Holding his ribs in agony, Piper slowly made his way over to Randy Savage and Elizabeth. After a brief moment, he extended his hand, telling Randy that he was definitely the better man on this night. Randy hesitated at first, but then accepted the handshake, much to the delight of the crowd. He and Piper embraced in the ring with a hug of mutual respect.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade for the show of respect: 79</strong></p><p> </p><p> What should have been a great moment in WWF history would soon become an infamous moment.</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/JGzh6hn.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Terry Funk managed to get out of his front row seat, grabbed a microphone and stormed into the ring. He told Macho Man and Roddy Piper that they had gone soft, and that this display of so-called sportsmanship made him sick to his stomach. He talked about how these two used to be real men, and now they were nothing more than soft sissies. Before either one could respond, Funk bashed both Piper and Savage over the head with the microphone. He kicked away at Piper's already injured ribs, then went to town beating up on Savage as Elizabeth cried for him to stop. Funk blew snot at Elizabeth as a show of disrespect before going back to the attack. Various officials and road agents ran out to try and get Terry Funk to stop his madness, but he just flung them down to the mat. Things finally calmed down when President Jack Tunney came down to the ring and demanded that the Funker leave. <p>I love the way you booked the show with putting Hulk in the middle when he wasn't outright winning. But then you still weren't sending the fans home happy because of The Funker! </p><p> </p><p>

I dig the Rougeaus picking up the belts too, they probably should have gotten a chance to carry them IRL for a little bit. But, much like the Rockers a few years later, that a talented team like them didn't get to hold the belts just shows how hot the tag division was then. But I still feel it won't be long until they drop them to a face team who can get Demolished.</p>
