A New Coaching Career

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. I am new to this game and just found it about a month ago. I downloaded the trial a few days ago and basically binge played for 72 hours. I love it and bought it today. I downloaded the 2016 update mod so that I would be able to have updated conferences. I'm not sure if anybody even reads these boards at all but I wanted to have somewhere to post so that I could look back through my career. With that being said here is the preview!

I will begin in the year 1939 when the first official NCAA tournament was held (Oregon beat Ohio State 46-33). While the year will be 1939, I will actually be using everything from 2016 as previously mentioned. I have not yet decided if I will keep my coach at the same team the entire time or if he will move around as better job offers hopefully come.

The league will use the 68 team NCAA tournament, the NIT, CBI, and CIT. Player attributes will be 1-100 (since I am new to the game I now this will be the easiest for me to evaluate). The 3-point shot will be enabled and players will be allowed to turn pro after their freshman years. Human coaches (AKA me) will be able to fired and will be offered jobs. Team prestige will NOT be randomized, but conference prestige can change over time, and conference movement is limited. All non-5th year transfers must redshirt, and players are allowed to refuse redshirts.

Our beloved coach is Level 7 with the following attributes:

Recruiting: 85

Scouting: 50

Offense: 75

Defense: 30

If anybody does end up checking this forum and reading this I will be open to all and any suggestions as I have no experience with the game. Another thing I saw somebody else do is offer to add people into the game as recruits, if anybody would like to do that just let me know!

Here we go, I hope you enjoy the ride.

Yours truly has become the head coach of the Grand Canyon University Antelopes! The way I came upon this decision is that I wanted my coach to begin with a lowly team and work his way up, earning everything along the way. I chose Grand Canyon because in my test simulations they consistently were the worst team in the game. The school's prestige is 0 and they are in the WAC, which has a prestige of 1. It has 8 teams, tied with the Ivy and Atlantic Sun Leagues as the smallest in the NCAA. It's pretty difficult to get any lower from here, so I truly have the most difficult task in the game ahead of me. Now, let's see how it goes!

The first order of business is hiring assistant coaches. After being declined by about a dozen, we finally filled our 3 positions. We have very little funds, so each of them will be making the minimum $30,000. Time to meet the staff!

Recruiting: Henry Morgan - 43 years old, Southeast Missouri State University

Lead Scout: Roderick Sala - 44 years old, Duquesne University

Asst. Coach: Marion Bilbrey - 40 years old, University of Tulsa

Next I will be figuring out our schedule, and then preparing for recruiting and training camp. I am planning on having a very weak non-conference schedule so that we can try to pile up as many wins as possible. In my previous simulations Grand Canyon usually ended up with only 1 win on the year, so if we can play as many other bad teams before the conference schedule begins, we may be able to at least have a bigger building block going into future recruiting than a 1-29 season.

In the next update I will preview the roster as well as the schedule for the 1939 season.

Here is the 2016 Grand Canyon Antelopes roster. As you can see, the majority of the team is from Arizona but we do have one player from Australia. With how low our prestige is, we may have to begin recruiting more outside of the United States (more to come on this when the recruiting list is posted next). The roster is made up of 4 seniors, all who are mediocre at best. All 4 are on scholarship so we will have a lot of new blood coming in next season. We will be losing 3 big men, so recruiting a few centers or power forwards will be important for us. Also if we are not able to find suitable players incoming as freshman, we may hit the transfer market at the end of the season to see if we can get lucky with any players there. More info on the starting lineup and each player's role will come closer to the start of the season!

Next up we have our 20 player call list! As you can see the majority of these players are big men, and we will be evaluating as many as possible to see who will be the right fit. Another thing you may notice is that 10 of the 20 players are international. This may be to our advantage as they may be scouted less by other schools, but it also is a disadvantage because they are significantly more expensive to scout. I will provide more info on recruiting as time goes by and where some of the recruits on the list end up going to school.

I will first begin by saying that we have bad news. SF Robbie Lemay has received an academic suspension and will be out until January 1st. Lemay projected to be our starting SF but he didn't bring much to the table so it won't be too big a blow (hopefully).

Here is our schedule for the 1938 season! As you can see I delivered with the promised cakewalk of a non-conference schedule, but I still don't expect us to pick up many wins as the team is truly awful. The game against UConn came as an absolute surprise as I did not schedule it but it appeared on the schedule. Even more surprising is that it shows as a home game. We will see what happens when we get there.

Now I will be going into the starting 5 as well as our key bench players!

Starting Lineup:

C - Edwin Scheel (SR*)

PF - Gary Fuhrman (SR*)

SF - Kristopher Isaac (SR*)

SG - Arthur Crumb (FR*)

PG - Dave Parada (JR)

The starting lineup features 4 upperclassmen and one freshman. Crumb is a redshirt freshman and has a lot of promise. He has the most potential on the team by far and is the only building block that we have.

Bench:

6th - PG James Jones (SO*) - Jones is a good jump shooter who doesn't bring much else to the table. Hopefully he can be a sparkplug off the bench.

7th - SF Nathan Webber (JR) - The Australian doesn't have any great qualities but he is halfway decent across the board and isn't terrible at anything.

8th - PF Quinton Corpuz (SR*) - Corpuz is a mediocre big man with little ability.

9th - SF Wilfredo Cogan (FR) - Cogan is a decent jump shooter with no defensive skills to speak of. He is very athletic though and hopefully can provide some decent minutes if called upon.

10th - C Chris Lampkin (SO) - I expect Lampkin to be the last player off the bench most games, if we even make it to him. The only way he'll make an impact is in games where we have guys in foul trouble.

The rest of the team doesn't figure to factor in much and I would be surprised if they got into more than a handful of games during the season.

With that being said, let's get the season underway! I believe the best way to go about this is to do monthly updates with our record as well as recruiting. Here we go!

We went 4-2 this month which was much better than I expected. The game against Incarnate Word we lost in OT. Our free throw shooting has been the biggest problem so far, and in that loss to Incarnate Word we went 13-28 from the line. Our worst free throw performance though was in the win against North Dakota where we went 28-51 from the line. That's right, 23 missed free throws!! So far the teams we have played all have been terrible, but the fact that we were able to pick up 4 wins is big.

As you can see, this month went very well for us with a 5-2 record. We were involved in some close games, although the 30 point loss to NJIT was embarrassing. That loss was due to racking up 31 team fouls and 2 technical fouls to go along with those. Our starting lineup only scored 15 points in the game. The win against Sacramento State was a nailbiter where we blew a lead late, but James Jones made a free throw (after missing the first one) with 4 seconds left to give us the win. The team is performing far better than I expected.

This season has been interesting, because as a whole the team is consistent, but individually there is no consistency. We have had a player score 20 points one night and then the very next game score less than 5. Even on the rebounding side of things Furhman has recorded as many as 15 rebounds and then followed up with only a couple the next game.

No other news here, hopefully we have some more good news next month.

As you can see, this was a hard week for us as we only picked up 1 win while racking up 7 losses. I've realized that a big part of this is our lack of depth. Obviously we lack players with skill as well, but I really only have about 1 or 2 players who come off the bench who have any business playing college basketball. After looking around the rest of the league it is clear that our roster is not fit to compete, as we don't even have that one great player that can take over a game.

The losses to Howard and Dartmouth were difficult as both were close games, but I was surprised to see us start 1-0 in league play with a blowout win. That didn't last long though as we lost 5 straight (including 4 league games) after.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention this at the beginning of the season but the goal the Athletic Director set out for me was "Avoid last place in the conference." With that being said, here is the conference standings.

Recruiting News

John Bragg has committed to play for the Antelopes next season! Bragg is a Point Guard from Collingsworth, Canada. He was also looking at Wisconsin and Utah State (both with prestige higher than 80) which shows that we may have gotten a steal here. Bragg has the potential to be an elite point guard in the league as he brings high end potential on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor.

We still have 2 more scholarships to hand out for next year.

February was another rough month for us, as we went 2-6 and ended with a 5 game losing streak. The wins against Utah Valley and Chicago State were nice, but we were disappointed to lose to Utah Valley and UT-Rio Grande Valley in the rematch games. This team is definitely as bad as I expected, and our record could be much worse if not for the cupcake non-conference schedule.

With one game left in the season we have wrapped up last place in the conference. The Athletic Director won't be too happy about that, but he should be happy that we are filling up next year's roster with a lot of young and talented players. Our final game is against New Mexico State who we expect will blow us out, but maybe we'll get lucky.

We have two new recruits! Lamar Herrington and Junior Jarvis will be playing for the Antelopes next season!

Lamar Harrington is a SF from Sundown, Texas. He is a 3 star recruit and was ranked the #339 overall recruit. He should develop into a defensive machine and already has a strong inside game as well as a developing 3 point game.

Junior Jarvis is a PG from Apache Junction, Arizona. He is listed as a PG but is 6'4'' and may be converted into a shooting guard or even a SF (given the lack of skill in our conference it may be feasible). Jarvis is a 2 star recruit and the #568 overall recruit. He has an advanced jump shot and has the potential to be lethal from the 3 point line. He doesn't have much of an inside game but he is a strong passer and hits the offensive boards hard. Normally I would not look to change his position but we have a gluttony of young guards right now.

We now have 4 incoming recruits and I can safely say that all 4 of them are better than the 4 graduating seniors. Hell, it may not even be a stretch to say that these 4 players are now the best 4 players on our team.

We only had one more game left in the season, a home game against New Mexico State. The Aggies beat us 59-41. We then played the Aggies again in the first round of the conference tournament and lost 49-25. It was our lowest point output of the season and was a bad way to end the season.

As you can see, not only did New Mexico State easily win the conference tournament, but there was not a single upset in any of the games. This isn't too surprising given the lack of talent in the tournament though. Here is the final conference standings.

Only New Mexico State and Seattle had winning records, which shows that all the other 6 teams just beat up on each other without being able to do much to stop either of the two "powerhouses." New Mexico State may have a decent chance to make some noise in the tourney though, as they are 2-2 against top 50 RPI teams.

It looks like the WAC really is that bad, as New Mexico State went 28-5 and missed the cut for the top 25. I can't say I'm too surprised though, as there are other teams on this mid-major list with fewer losses that also didn't make it.

March Madness

I will be doing this every year, so here is the NCAA tournament for the 1939-1940 season!

<a href="http://imgur.com/m5AQ2nO"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/m5AQ2nOl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The West region provided our first big upset, as 13 seed Tulsa took down 4 seed North Carolina. Tulsa lost by only 2 in the round of 32 and the Cinderella story came to an early end. On the bottom half of the bracket Gonzaga bounced out in the second round, proving that an undefeated season only gets you so far when the competition is subpar. Arizona wins the West and punches the first ticket to the Final Four!

<a href="http://imgur.com/5fe9MAu"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/5fe9MAul.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Things went pretty much as expected in the Midwest region, as 1 seed Illinois beat 2 seed Xavier in the Elite Eight in a thriller of a game! Illinois survived Xavier by 1 point and beat Pittsburgh in the Sweet Sixteen by only 2 points. We will see if their luck continues. The biggest surprise in this region was seeing Austin Peay as a 7 seed after a 28-4 season. They promptly lost in the first round to Michigan State. I also don't think many people expected to see UTEP as a 4 seed.

<a href="http://imgur.com/msDgW7z"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/msDgW7zl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The South region is where all the fun happened! 14 seed Winthrop took down 3 seed Utah State but were unable to make it to the Sweet 16. Both the 1 and 2 seeds lost in the Sweet 16 and 6 seed Wisconsin trounced 5 seed Oklahoma State to punch its ticket to the Sweet 16!

<a href="http://imgur.com/DZgCgGN"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/DZgCgGNl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

I may have spoken a little too soon when I said the South is where all the fun happened. Alabama is the bracketbreaker this year as they made it through to the Final 4 as a 13 seed, absolutely destroying their opponents! Not only was Bama able to do this, but they first had to play in the play-in-game. They beat Dayton there by 6 points, 4 seed Wake Forest by 16 points, 12 seed Siena by 9 points, 1 seed Kentucky by 17 points, and finally 7 seed Louisville by 27 points. It's funny that their closest games came against their weakest opponent, Siena and Dayton. Siena knocked off 5 seed Kansas in the first round. In the bottom half of the bracket our WAC champion New Mexico State lost to Elite 8 team Louisville by only 3 points. 11 seed Old Dominion beat 6 seed Temple 65-64 for another first round upset. This region would have given people fits as the 11, 12, and 13 seeds all advanced. Old Dominion took down 3 seed West Virginia in the round of 32 to make it to the Sweet 16. Louisville path to the Elite 8 is interesting, as they won their 3 games by a combined 8 points.

<a href="http://imgur.com/5pfpypQ"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/5pfpypQl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Arizona absolutely demolished Wisconsin with a 26 point win, and Illinois barely held up Alabama for a 3 point win. Arizona proved its dominance though, winning 94-87 to win the inaugural NCAA tournament. Congratulations to the Wildcats!

This season the Grand Canyon Antelopes went 12-19 and were much better than expected thanks to a cupcake schedule. Next year we expect to be even better, although it may not reflect in our record as we debate scheduling tougher opponents. Hopefully it will show in our conference record as we look to improve on the 3-11 mark.

We had two players get All-Conference honors this season! Senior PF Gary Fuhrman was a 2nd team selection and SG Arthur Crumb made the All-Freshman team.

We had the #101 ranked recruiting class, which was good for the best in the conference. #2 was Seattle who came in at #229. I think that these numbers might not be truly representative though, as we did have 4 recruits come in, and we really lucked into Bragg and Herrington.

1939-1940 Senior Appreciation Day

At the end of each year I will be chronicling the careers of our Seniors.

First up we have Gary Fuhrman, possibly the best player of the 1939-1940 season. Fuhrman wasn't great by any means, but he was the best player we had and he got the job done. He'll be remembered as a leading member of our inaugural season. He was also the first player in school history to be an all-league selection, as he was a choice for the 2nd team this season.

1940-1941 Season Preview

This is the preview for the 1940-1941 season!

First we will look at this year's schedule, which should be just about as bad as last year. Instead of going just for low prestige teams we also targeted mid-level prestige teams that had terrible seasons last year. Still, even with this the best team we will face in our nonconference schedule is either Army or Portland.

Athletic Director Goal

This year the Athletic Director again wants us to avoid last place in the conference. My hot seat rating is still average. Even though I failed last season's goal I believe that I will be given some leeway given the prestige rating of 0 and the lack of talent on the roster.

Now it's time to meet your starting lineup for the 1940-1941 season!

Starting Lineup:

C - Brandon Worth (FR)

PF - Lamar Herrington (FR)

SF - Junior Jarvis (FR)

SG - Arthur Crumb (SO*)

PG - John Bragg (FR)

The starting lineup will feature 4 freshmen! Lamar Herrington and Junior Jarvis will both be playing out of position, but both have the height to play their new positions. Jarvis was recruited as a PG, but he is 6'4'' and we need him in the lineup. Herrington was recruited as a SF and at 6'4'' will be a little undersized at PF, but we will see how it goes.

Now for the bench:

6th - PG Dave Parada (SR) - Parada was the starting PG last year and led the team in points, but the new crop of freshmen are simply too good for him to be starting. It will difficult for him to find minutes given that 3 members of the lineup can play PG and SG.

7th - PF Dennis Donato (FR) - Donato is a walk-on freshman who joined after Lemay's transfer. He isn't great offensively but he brings great defense and has the potential to be an elite shotblocker.

8th - PG James Jones (SO) - Jones had trouble seeing time last year with only 2 guys blocking him. Now he has 4. He's not a great player by any means but his minutes definitely will be limited.

9th - C Thomas Sprouse (JR) - Sprouse is simply a depth guy here as he is poor all across the board. He'll come in when the big men are tired or in foul trouble.

10th - SG Ricky McNair (SO*) - McNair played in 28 games last season and average 5.9 minutes. This year he's pushed even further down the depth chart and probably won't see much action.

11th - SF Nathan Webber (SF) - Normally someone this far down the depth chart wouldn't see much action, but given Webber's ability to play both SF and PF it could end up causing him to see more play time than expected. He definitely will be in for a surprise though, as he played in all 31 games last season and average 13.6 minutes. His play time will see a huge decrease.

It's time to get the season underway. Hopefully we can build on last season and increase our conference record.

Abilene Christian (0-0) @ Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 51, Grand Canyon - 62. A great way for us to start the season. The freshmen were very impressive and led us to victory. Lamar Herrington was the player of the game in his debut, scoring 17 points and recording 4 rebounds. John Bragg scored 13 points in his debut and Brandon Worth had 9 with 8 rebounds. Dennis Donato had 0 points but 5 rebounds in his debut. Our most exciting freshman, Junior Jarvis, got in foul trouble early and only managed 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Hopefully we can unleash him in the next few games.

November 19, 1940

UMass Lowell (0-0) @ Grand Canyon (1-0)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 51, Grand Canyon - 72. What a coincidence that we allowed 51 points in back to back games. The Player of the game was Arthur Crumb who racked up 13 points and 5 rebounds. We had our best ever performance from 3 point range, making 10 of our 18 attempts. John Bragg had 15 points including four 3's. Unfortunately Junior Jarvis got into foul trouble as did his SF replacement Dave Parada. Both of them are PG's who are being asked to play SF so we can get their offense in the lineup. Brandon Worth led the team with 6 rebounds, and he also had 7 points.

November 23, 1940

North Dakota (0-1) @ Grand Canyon (2-0)

Final Score: North Dakota - 46, Grand Canyon - 56. Junior Jarvis finally had his breakout game, putting up 15 points and grabbing 8 board. Arthur Crumb had a curious statline, with 0 points in 32 minutes while having 4 assists and 5 rebounds. John Bragg had 14 points and Brandon Worth had 8 rebounds. I'm thrilled with the youth influx and how good the team has looked during this 3-0 start.

Final Score: Bryant - 48, Grand Canyon - 66. Arthur Crumb followed up his 0 point game with 14 points and 2 assists to be named the player of the game. Junior Jarvis had 13 points and 4 assists, and John Bragg had 12 points. Dave Parada played 19 minutes off the bench and put up 13 points. He could be a very important 6th man. Brandon Worth again lead the way with 7 rebounds.

Grand Canyon (4-0) @ Portland (2-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Portland - 70. We faltered in our first real test this season, but it was still encouraging. We went 28-38 from the free throw line, but it came down to the rebound margin that lost us the game. Portland had 13 more rebounds than us. On the bright side Junior Jarvis and John Bragg both had 18 points, and Bragg went 10-11 from the free throw line. Brandon Worth again led the way with 6 rebounds.

December 3, 1940

SIU Edwardsville (3-1) @ Grand Canyon (4-1)

Final Score: SIU Edwardsville - 64, Grand Canyon - 56. We failed in our second test of the season due to poor rebounding. John Bragg had 15 points and Dennis Donato had 10. Hopefully we can turn things around in our next game against Northern Kentucky.

December 7, 1940

Grand Canyon (4-2) @ Northern Kentucky (0-4)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Northern Kentucky - 48. Arthur Crumb was the player of the game, dropping 25 points and 6 rebounds. He was 4-6 from 3 points range. Brandon Worth had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

December 12, 1940

Grand Canyon (5-2) @ Florida International (0-4)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 71, Florida International - 79. We played very well offensively but just couldn't claw back. We allowed way too many second chance points and had twice as many turnovers as Florida International (14 to 7). Arthur Crumb had another huge game with 24 points. Junior Jarvis tacked on 11 more and had 8 assists, by the far most anybody has recorded in team history so far. We definitely were hoping to win this game, so hopefully we can turn things around.

December 16, 1940

Grand Canyon (5-3) @ Army (0-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 57, Army - 37. This one was an easy win and a great team effort. Brandon Worth was the player of the game with 4 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists. Junior Jarvis had 14 points and John Bragg had 13. Dave Parada was efficient off the bench with 8 points in 15 minutes.

December 22, 1940

Grand Canyon (6-3) @ St. Francis PA (2-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 49, St. Francis PA - 64. This loss was an absolute embarrassment to the program, and I wouldn't have been surprised if I was fired in real life after this performance. This was the one game that I would have bet on us winning with ease before the season. But, obviously this team still has a long way to go! Arthur Crumb had 14 points and nobody else did much.

December 28, 1940

Grand Canyon (6-4) @ Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 27, Arkansas-Pine Bluff - 66. Wow. And I thought the last game was bad. This will go down as the worst loss in school history. Losing by 39 points to a team that is 1-9 is really a blow. We show 21% and really just played awfully. I didn't think the last game would carry over into this one, but unfortunately it did. Hopefully the team can shake off this bad spell of shooting and come back with a big win!

December 31, 1940

Grand Canyon (6-5) @ Presbyterian (3-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 47, Presbyterian - 43. We didn't play great in this one, but the team pulled out a victory and that's what matters. Dennis Donato was the player of the game, coming off the bench and scoring 10 points and grabbing 6 rebounds with 2 blocks. This was a game where our bigs thrived. Brandon Worth had 8 points and 13 rebounds and Lamar Herrington had 11 points and 6 boards.

Team News

We have very bad news. SG Arthur Crumb has been suspended due to poor academics and will be ineligible the rest of the season. This is a huge blow and will cost us dearly. We will switch the lineup around a little. Junior Jarvis will be switching to PG, John Bragg will move to SG, Lamar Herrington will play SF, Dennis Donato will start at PF, and Brandon Worth will remain at C.

Recruiting News

No news this week on any of our players. We are pushing hard for Andrew Turnbull and he is our top priority at the moment. Joseph French is our #2 and we would more than gladly take both of them.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, Texas State - 54. This one was a lot closer than the final score indicates. We took a 33-23 halftime lead but Texas State fought back to take the lead about 8 minutes into the second half. After staying close for a while we pulled away to take the lead for good. John Bragg was the player of the game, putting up 14 points. Junior Jarvis looked good again with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Final Score: Grand Canyon - 51, Longwood - 65. This one was close until a 10-0 Longwood run late in the second half. They simply outplayed us and shot 50% to our 38%. Dennis Donato led the way with 14 points while John Bragg and Dave Parada each had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Junior Jarvis had 7 points and dished out 8 assists.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 48, Maryland Eastern Shore - 56. We played great in the first half but couldn't score in the second half. We shot 23% this game and missed 14 free throws. John Bragg went 6-11 from 3 point range and the rest of the team went 0-13!! Bragg was the player of the game, scoring 23 points. Brandon Worth grabbed 11 boards. This was one we had hoped to win to give us momentum going into conference play.

Cal State Bakersfield (4-11) vs. Grand Canyon (8-7)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 62, Grand Canyon - 36. I feel like a broken record, but this is an absolutely embarrassing loss. We shot 22% in this game and shot 53% from the free throw line. Not a single player on our team had a good game.

Chicago State (4-12) vs. Grand Canyon (8-8)

Final Score: Chicago State - 47, Grand Canyon - 55. This was a one possession game until the final two minutes of the game and was a great bounceback effort after getting destroyed by Cal State Bakersfield. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game, dropping 7 points with 3 assists, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals. Nobody had more than 10 points as it was a true team effort. We still shot only 37% but we were able to do enough to get the job done.

Grand Canyon (9-8) @ UMKC (7-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 59, UMKC - 66. We outplayed UMKC in every aspect of the game besides turnovers and shooting percentage (we again shot under 40%), which cost us the game. We had 4 players in double digits, but our 9 free throw misses (multiple being the front end of a 1 and 1) cost us. Junior Jarvis had a stellar game, recording 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, the closest we've ever been to a triple double.

January 25, 1941

Grand Canyon (9-9) @ Seattle (4-12)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 32, Seattle - 71. Well, the broken record is back! I'd fire myself if I thought I could find a worse team to take over! Surely in real life the coaching staff and I would be let go after this 39 point loss. We shot 31% and had 19 turnovers. I cannot remember the last game where we actually played well. Our last few wins have been not due to us playing well but due to the other team playing so poorly that we couldn't find a way to lose to them.

February 1, 1941

Utah Valley (11-8) vs. Grand Canyon (9-11)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 71, Grand Canyon - 52. We couldn't stop Utah Valley's offense as they shot 60%. Junior Jarvis led the way for us with 14 points and 4 assists. John Bragg had 10 points of his own. Our 17 turnovers also did us in.

UT Rio Grande Valley (7-13) vs. Grand Canyon (9-12)

Final Score: UT Rio Grande Valley - 48, Grand Canyon - 59. This was a great team game as 3 players scored in double digits. Lamar Herrington was the player of the game with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Dennis Donato was the player of the game in my opinion though, with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Jarvis had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.

February 8, 1941

New Mexico State (15-6) vs. Grand Canyon (10-12)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 73, Grand Canyon - 57. This one was only a 5 point game at halftime, but New Mexico State broke away thanks to our inability to make free throws. We missed 22 free throws in this one which killed any chances we had. John Bragg had 15 points and Junior Jarvis had 11.

February 13, 1941

Grand Canyon (10-13) @ Chicago State (4-18)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 54, Chicago State - 58. We couldn't quite pull out a win here as Chicago State was able to avenge their early season loss to us. Free throws again played big here as we only attempted 11 and missed 6, while Chicago State show 26 and missed 5. I was very jealous watching a team make that many free throws.

February 15, 1941

Grand Canyon (10-14) @ Cal State Bakersfield (9-14)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 40, Cal State Bakersfield - 79. This is probably where I would have been fired in real life as this game was truly awful. We shot 26% from the line and the starting lineup only had 21 points.

February 20, 1941

Seattle (9-15) vs. Grand Canyon (10-15)

Final Score: Seattle - 42, Grand Canyon - 40. This one was a thriller! It was a great game and Seattle won on a buzzer beater. John Bragg and Lamar Herrington had 11 points each and Brandon Worth had 13 rebounds.

UMKC (11-13) vs. Grand Canyon (10-16)

Final Score: UMKC - 62, Grand Canyon - 68. This one was a big win and we got revenge on UMKC for beating us earlier in the season. This win moved us from last place in the conference up to 6th. Junior Jarvis led the way as player of the game with 21 points and 3 assists. Lamar Herrington had 17 points and 11 rebounds to get the double-double.

Grand Canyon (11-16) @ Utah Valley (13-13)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, Utah Valley - 64. We had a ten point lead with 5 and a half minutes left but couldn't hold off a late Utah Valley run. John Bragg had 21 points and Junior Jarvis had 10 points and 6 assists. We shot 65% from the field but our 18 turnovers (8 more than Utah Valley) is what doomed us as we had turnover after turnover in our final possessions.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 62, UT Rio Grande Valley - 37. John Bragg was the player of the game with a stellar 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Grand Canyon (12-17) @ New Mexico State (23-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 42, New Mexico State - 66. We had a chance in this one but turnovers doomed us. We had 22 turnovers to their 10, and we went 9-16 from the line. John Bragg had 13 points and Junior Jarvis had 10, but we couldn't overcome all those turnovers. We didn't expect to win this game anyways, and even with the loss we finished 6th in the conference.

We face Cal State Bakersfield in the first round of the tournament, which is probably our worst case scenario. You may remember that they beat us by 26 and 39 points this season. Well, let's see how the game goes!

First Round of WAC Tournament

Cal State Bakersfield (13-16) vs. Grand Canyon (12-18)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 46, Grand Canyon - 54. We did it! What an upset! In both games against Cal State Bakersfield they got off to an early lead and only a few minutes in the game was already over. This time we were the ones who did that and got off to a 31-14 halftime lead. I thought things were going to get rough early on when Bakersfield kept getting offensive rebounds, but they weren't able to convert the second chance points. Junior Jarvis had 12 points and John Bragg had 11. Dennis Donato pulled down 9 big rebounds and Brandon Worth and Lamar Herrington each had 7.

We are through to the second round where we will face Seattle. Seattle beat us by 39 in our first meeting this year and then won by 2 in the second meeting.

March 14, 1941

Seattle (14-17) vs. Grand Canyon (13-18)

Final Score: Seattle - 62, Grand Canyon - 53 in OT. It was tied 50-50 going into Overtime and we should have won but we committed a foul with 3 seconds left that allowed them to tie the game. Then in OT we only took two shots and committed a turnover on every other possession, it was brutal. We committed 18 turnovers to their 10 and we missed 8 free throws in regulation. This is definitely disappointing as we should have won this game and been in the championship. This is definitely something to build on though, given that all 5 starters are freshmen.

Here is what the conference tournament looked like. UMKC pulled off the huge upset and will be making the tournament at 16-16.

March Madness

Here is March Madness for the 1940-1941 season.

First the West Region

<a href="http://imgur.com/Qmt4dk6"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/Qmt4dk6l.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The first round featured two upsets with Virginia taking down George Mason (after beating LSU in the play-in game) and Cincinnati beating Xavier in what I'm sure was an amazing rivalry game. Illinois made a great run as the 4 seed and beat #1 Duke to make it to the Elite Eight but were stopped by Cincinnati's run!

Now to the Midwest region:

<a href="http://imgur.com/r3GeMuX"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/r3GeMuXl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This bracket featured UMKC, the WAC representative. UMKC took down Mount St. Mary's in the play-in game before losing to 1 seed Kansas by 16. This one didn't feature many upsets in the first round, but there was some fun when 2 seed Northwestern went down in the 2nd round to 7 seed Kent State. Then Temple took them down with a 2 point win to advance to the Elite Eight where they knocked off 1 seed Kansas by one point!

The South Region is next:

<a href="http://imgur.com/KejCQOK"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/KejCQOKl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This round also featured only one first round upset, and like the Midwest it was the 9 seed winning. The 2 seed Memphis also lost in the second round to 7 seed Vanderbilt and the 1 seed lost in the Sweet 16 to 5 seed Georgetown who then beat 3 seed Louisville to make the Final Four.

The East Region is next:

<a href="http://imgur.com/9wLBPPP"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/9wLBPPPl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Again the only first round upset was the 9 seed winning. Way fewer upsets this year than what we saw last year. We had a high scoring affair in the Round of 32 with 5 seed West Virginia beat 4 seed Villanova 110-107. This one went about as expected as 1 seed Syracuse beat 2 seed Maryland to advance to the Final Four.

And now it's time for the Final Four!

<a href="http://imgur.com/NT4Tnav"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/NT4Tnavm.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Cincinnati beat Georgetown to make the championship as an 11 seed and Syracuse beat Temple. Then in the championship game Syracuse won by 11 to claim the national championship!

1940-1941 Senior Appreciation Day

Here is our second annual Senior Appreciation Day.

First up is Dave Parada. He had to adjust from starting last season to coming off the bench this season, but he was our only reliable player off the bench this year. He was twice named the player of the game and his career high for points in a game was 20. He wasn't a stud by any means but he was one of our key players in our inaugural season and without him coming off the bench we would have been in a lot of trouble.

This year we went 13-19, improving upon last season by one win. We finished 6th in the division which was a big improvement, especially given that we started 5 freshman for the majority of the season. We have some great building blocks and we won't have much of an incoming class this year, meaning that core will still be starting next season.

As you can see, we were very good at limiting steals as well as limiting how many fouls we committed. We had an absolute cupcake of a schedule again which meant that we only played 3 teams whose RPI was better than 200. Our RPI was 351 which rates us as the last team in the game. We had the #196 recruiting class, good for 3rd in the conference. Andrew Turnbull is from Rockhampton, Austrlia and Conrado Ruiz is coming to us from a Junior College and is from El Paso, Texas. He just signed on with us the last month of the season before the offseason started.
