Hopefully we can stock up on good young freshman that can either help immediately or can develop into bright players for the future.

1941-1942 Season Preview

Here is the preview for the upcoming season! We decided to up our schedule a bit and we will see if it pays off. Where last year Army was our biggest competition, this year we play teams like SMU, Utah, TCU, South Florida, & Oregon State.

Athletic Director Goal

The goal of the Athletic Director this year is again for us to avoid last place in the conference. We were rewarded with last years 6th place performance by seeing our team prestige increase from 0 to 1!

Now on to our schedule.

SG - Arthur Crumb (JR*)

SF - Junior Jarvis (SO)

PF - Conrado Ruiz (JR)

C - Andrew Turnbull (FR)

6th - SF Lamar Herrington. Herrington was a starter last year, but we are going to experiment with him off the bench so that we can get Crumb in the starting lineup.

7th - C Brandon Worth. Another starter last year, we will see what type of impact he can have off the bench.

8th - PF Dennis Donato. Sounds like deja vu. Donato was always going to be the odd man out this year no matter what. This year we actually have some depth, so it will be nice to be comfortable when the substitutes go in.

9th - PG James Jones. Just like the last two years Jones will be coming off the bench and providing a few points.

10th - SF Brian Bailey. Hopefully Bailey can play some decent minutes given his 3 point shooting ability. He is the last player I feel comfortable with going in the game, which is a huge improvement over last year.

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 70, Grand Canyon - 79. This was the highest scoring game we've ever had and by far the best first half we've ever had (we scored 51). Lamar Herrington was the player of the game with 24 points and went 5-6 from 3 point land. Andrew Turnbull had 16 points and 5 rebounds in his debut and Conrado Ruiz had 3 points with 6 rebounds.

Grand Canyon (1-0) @ Southern Utah (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 74, Southern Utah - 69. Another high scoring game for our new offense! Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 20 point, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. John Bragg tacked on 15 points of his own with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Andrew Turnbull and Lamar Herrington each had 8 rebounds. Just for a little fun fact, our RPI after this win is 58! At this point last season the same thing happened before the RPI realized our strength of schedule was weak.

November 21, 1941

UMass Lowell (0-1) vs. Grand Canyon (2-0)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 56, Grand Canyon - 62. What a start to the season! John Bragg was the player of the game with 13 points and 4 assists but Junior Jarvis had a great games as well, dropping 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Arthur Crumb had 11 points off the bench in 19 minutes.

November 23, 1941

Florida State (1-0) vs. Grand Canyon (3-0)

Final Score: Florida State - 81, Grand Canyon 87. Holy cow, what a win! I bet after seeing Florida State scored 81 you thought it would be ugly, but the team showed up in a big way. I've built this team up to be good at shooting 3's, and today was the best they have ever been, going 14-28 from behind the arc. We were even able to overcome our 15 turnovers (4 more than Florida State). John Bragg and Junior Jarvis combined for 52 points as both played out of their minds. Bragg had 30, a new school record, including 8 three pointers as the player of the game. Conrado Ruiz came up big on defense, grabbing 11 rebounds. This is the best win in program history and our first ever win against a team from an elite conference. This one will be remembered for a long time! Also a quick note is that Florida State's RPI is 6! Obviously it's early in the season but I found that interesting.

Grand Canyon (4-0) @ Idaho (1-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 68, Idaho - 64. This is the type of game that we surely would have lost last season. We got in major foul trouble and had to rely on the bench. John Bragg, Junior Jarvis, and Lamar Herrington all had 4 fouls with over 10 minutes left in the second half. On top of that our 6th man Arthur Crumb had 4 fouls as well. This was a strain but the reserves were able to keep the offense moving and didn't allow Idaho to come back. The score was much closer at the end as Idaho converted 3 pointers on their final 3 drives, including a full court buzzer beater at the end of regulation. John Bragg was again the player of the game, dropping 21 points and 5 rebounds. He had 18 points at halftime but had to sit out most of the second half. Conrado Ruiz again ruled the boards, picking up 11 rebounds. The bench had 16 points in this one which may not seem impressive, but they came when they were needed the most. I couldn't have dreamed a better start to the season and it looks like we truly will be a force to be reckoned with in the WAC this year.

Grand Canyon (5-0) @ SMU (3-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 76, SMU - 60. We continue our strong start to the season with another win over a power conference team. SMU had an RPI of 2 going into this game which makes it an impressive win for us! Unfortunately John Bragg left with an injury after only 7 minutes, but Lamar Herrington picked up the slack with 22 points en route to being player of the game. Conrado Ruiz again dominated on the boards, this time with 15 rebounds. Junior Jarvis had a weird game, fouling out in only 11 minutes. We had 21 turnover in this one (to SMU's 17) but still managed to get a pretty easy win.

Team News:

John Bragg will be out for 13 days. In his absence Junior Jarvis will take over at PG and Arthur Crumb will enter the lineup as the starting SG. Man it's nice to finally have depth!

December 5, 1941

Grand Canyon (6-0) @ Utah (4-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 55, Utah - 84. This one got out of hand quickly as we committed almost 20 fouls in the first 15 minutes of the game and had no chance with all the starters out. We still outplayed Utah in every aspect of the game besides having 11 more turnovers and allowing 21 offensive rebounds. We never had a chance. Junior Jarvis had 15 points and 8 assists and Arthur Crumb had 13 points and 4 assists.

December 7, 1941

Grand Canyon (6-1) @ Northern Kentucky (1-5)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 47, Northern Kentucky - 65. This is the Grand Canyon I remember, playing one of the worst teams in the country and getting embarrassed by them! John Bragg being out has hurt our offense a lot more than I expected and we can't wait to get him back. The team will be running a lot of wind sprints in the coming day and hopefully they turn things around as this was a truly awful performance.

December 11, 1941

Grand Canyon (6-2) @ Ball State (2-4)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 69, Ball State - 72. Another bad outing without John Bragg. We were up 6 points with 30 second left and on the final possession turned it over and allowed the game winning 3. These last two losses have felt worse than any of the 40+ point losses we've endured over the past two seasons.

December 15, 1941

Grand Canyon (6-3) @ Texas State (1-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 68, Texas State - 52. We were able to finally bounce back with a big win here. Junior Jarvis had 17 points and 5 assists and John Bragg had 10 points and 3 assists. We shot over 50% but were outrebounded by 13 which kept Texas State in it as they had 19 offensive rebounds. Unfortunately Lamar Herrington left with an injury and will be out for 13 days. I am not sure who will replace him but it looks like it will be Brian Bailey who had 11 points and 4 rebounds in his place.

December 18, 1941

Grand Canyon (7-3) @ Sacramento State (1-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 68, Sacramento State - 71. We fouled Sacramento State for no reason on their final 5 possessions (all in the double bonus) and then with 30 seconds left when they missed both free throws and we allowed the free throw shooter to tip in the basket and get fouled. Once again the team is going crazy with fouling and even though I trust the bench we can't overcome the 10-15 extra points our opponents are getting off free throws each game. John Bragg had 19 points and 6 rebounds. Andrew Turnbull had 12 points and Brian Bailey and Arthur Crumb each had 10 points.

December 22, 1941

Grand Canyon (7-4) @ TCU (7-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 68, TCU - 65. Our luck has finally changed! Conrado Ruiz hit a buzzer beater 3 to win the game! John Bragg was the player of the game with 22 points. Brian Bailey had 9 rebounds and Junior Jarvis had 6 assists. This was a much needed win after our loss to Sacramento State. Not only did we recover with a win but we beat a team with a good record as well as a power conference team.

December 26, 1941

Grand Canyon (8-4) @ South Florida (3-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 60, South Florida - 71. Another dissappointing performance. I'm not sure what to say when we are beating the good teams and getting destroyed by the awful ones. Junior Jarvis had 16 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds while John Bragg, Arthur Crumb, and Brian Bailey all had 10 points. This was a fitting end to a month where we went 2-5 and should have gone 6-1.

Grand Canyon (8-5) @ South Dakota State (1-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 71, South Dakota State - 76. Amazing that we lose our 3rd game of the season in the final 30 seconds. Andrew Turnbull had 14 points and 13 rebounds while John Bragg had 17 points. At this point the team is doing everything exceptionally well except free throw shooting and 3 point shooting and I cannot figure out how we keep losing. It makes absolutely no sense and defies all logic.

January 6, 1942

Grand Canyon (8-6) @ North Dakota (2-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, North Dakota - 79. That's right, we just lost two straight games to teams that had a combined 3 wins. We keep finding new ways to lose every game. One game we'll have 25 turnovers and do everything else well and the next we'll have 5 turnovers but shoot 18% from the field and miss 18 free throws. Junior Jarvis had 25 points and Arthur Crumb and Lamar Herrington both had 14.

January 9, 1942

Grand Canyon (8-7) @ Oregon State (6-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 52, Oregon State - 73. We were way outrebounded and committed way too many fouls. Any time we were about to go on a run we would foul Oregon State and ruin our momentum. Conference play starts next and I'm curious to see if we channel our early season form. It definitely has been a frustrating last 8 games. John Bragg again was the only player who showed up, recording 16 points. I know I've been hard on the team but believe me each of these write-ups I've had much more scathing things to say and then I edit them to sound a bit nicer!

UT Rio Grande Valley (3-11) vs. Grand Canyon (8-8)

Final Score: UT Rio Grande Valley - 40, Grand Canyon - 63. I'm so relieved to see how well we opened conference play. It was a much needed home game after our rough stretch on the road. Andrew Turnbull had a career game with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Lamar Herrington had 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Conrado Ruiz had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Unfortunately Junior Jarvis left with an injury but he will only be out for 8 days.

Utah Valley (4-11) vs. Grand Canyon (9-8)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 64, Grand Canyon - 52. We shot 35% while Utah Valley shot 56%. It's amazing we kept it close with that huge differential. Conrado Ruiz had a huge game, putting up 16 points and recording 14 rebounds. Lamar Herrington had 13 points and 5 rebounds.

January 22, 1942

Grand Canyon (9-9) @ Chicago State (3-12)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 64, Chicago State - 49. Lamar Herrington had 17 points and Conrado Ruiz had 12 rebounds but 0 points. Junior Jarvis played through his injury (it was day-to-day) and he was the player of the game with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

January 24, 1942

Grand Canyon (10-9) @ New Mexico State (10-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, New Mexico State - 62. Holy cow what a finish! We missed multiple big free throws down the stretch, but Junior Jarvis made a basket to give us the 1 point lead with 29 seconds left. Then we fouled New Mexico State on the buzzer beater but they missed both free throws! Junior Jarvis had 24 points with 6 assists and John Bragg had 18 points. This was our first time ever beating New Mexico State after going 0-5 against them the first two seasons.

January 31, 1942

Grand Canyon (11-9) @ UMKC (9-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 67, UMKC - 66. We blew a 19 point lead in this one but regained the lead with 30 seconds left on a 3 by Arthur Crumb. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Arthur Crumb had 15 points and both Andrew Turnbull and Lamar Herrington had 11 points. We were lucky to end up with the win here as we committed 3 straight turnovers before hitting the game winning 3. We need to work on holding on to our lead and not getting complacent and allowing a comeback. Still though I am happy with the team pulling out a win even if it did almost give me a heart attack. UMKC was 4-0 in the conference, so by beating them we are now the best team in the WAC!

Cal State Bakersfield (7-12) vs. Grand Canyon (12-9)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 61, Grand Canyon - 50. Grand Canyon went on an early 10-0 run to go up and from then on we traded baskets for the final 35 minutes of the game. Lamar Herrington had 14 points and Junior Jarvis had 10. Dennis Donato had 9 rebounds off the bench. We got into foul trouble in the first half which made it difficult to mount a comeback.

Seattle (10-10) vs. Grand Canyon (12-10)

Final Score: Seattle - 67, Grand Canyon - 56. Andrew Turnbull had 12 points and 7 rebounds while Junior Jarvis and John Bragg both have 11 points. Seattle blocked 6 of our shots and we had more turnovers which cost us in the end. Our hot streak to start conference play has cooled which is disappointing given both of these games were at home.

February 12, 1942

Grand Canyon (12-11) @ Utah Valley (8-14)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 70, Utah Valley - 60. We pulled away at the end here but the game was much closer than the score indicates. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 19 points and 5 assists and Lamar Herrington had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. John Bragg tacked on 11 points of his own and Conrado Ruiz had 11 rebounds.

Grand Canyon (13-11) @ UT Rio Grande Valley (6-17)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 71, UT Rio Grande Valley - 55. This was a great team game and we dominated in every aspect of the game. Andrew Turnbull was the player of the game with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Junior Jarvis had 12 points and Arthur Crumb had 15 off the bench. This win puts us at 6-3 in the conference as we are doing much better than we have any other season. Also remember this, none of our key players are seniors which means that things can only get better next year!

New Mexico State (13-10) vs. Grand Canyon (14-11)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 63, Grand Canyon - 50. We had this one wrapped up but then scored 9 points in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Another awful performance due to foul trouble. We at one point had 8 straight turnovers, probably a NCAA record. Conrado Ruiz had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds and everyone else played like crap. We went 4-23 from 3 to round out the terrible outing.

Chicago State (5-19) vs. Grand Canyon (14-12)

Final Score: Chicago State - 56, Grand Canyon - 74. We played well in this one and Lamar Herrington was the player of the game with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. John Bragg had 10 points and Arthur Crumb had 13. The bench came up big with 27 points in this one. With this win we are now in a 3 way tie for first place in the conference.

C John Ragan has committed to play for us! He is from Prescott Valley, Arizona and he doesn't have the highest potential but he could be an important bench player. He has the potential to be an elite 3 point shooter and passer. Outside of that he will be about average in every other category, but having a big man who can stretch the floor and pass could be huge.

Grand Canyon (17-12) @ Seattle (15-13)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 52, Seattle - 65. Seattle routed us here as we still haven't been able to find a way to beat them. John Bragg and Arthur Crumb both had 13 points. We ended the second best team in the conference at 9-5. Two other teams had 9-5 records but the way that the tiebreaker worked out we ended up 2nd.

Final Score: Utah Valley - 60, Grand Canyon - 64. We are into the final! One more win and we make the NCAA tournament! Arthur Crumb was the player of the game, scoring 18 points off the bench with 8 rebounds. Lamar Herrington had 11 points and we got some prime minutes from the bench because of foul trouble. This one was a true team effort but it was Crumb coming up clutch that put us over the top.

#5 Seattle (18-13) vs. #2 Grand Canyon (19-13)

Final Score: Seattle - 54, Grand Canyon - 51. Seattle hit a buzzer beater to win the game but were aided by our terrible free throw shooting. We had this one in the bag but made only two shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half. This is now the second time Seattle has beaten us on a buzzer beater. Nobody did anything worth mentioning as we crashed out in the finals. It's a shame that we weren't able to make it to the NCAA tournament as we absolutely deserved it.

CIT Tournament!

In years past the CIT has been lumped into the same post as the NIT and the CBI. This year though it will get its own post. If you haven't figured out yet, that is because Grand Canyon has received an invite to the CIT! Not only have we been invited, but we are the #1 seed! In the first round we will match up against High Point. Hopefully making the CIT will help boost our prestige, even if it's just a little nudge.

First Round

#16 High Point (17-14) vs. #1 Grand Canyon (19-14)

Final Score: High Point - 64, Grand Canyon - 56. Well we were outshot here as High Point shot 52% including 66% from 3. We made the same amount of 3 pointers except we took 12 more than them, and we missed 6 free throws. We only shot 33% from the field in this game and if we have a slightly better shooting game then we win this one. On top of all of that we also had Lamar Herrington and Andrew Turnbull get injured during the game, so it was truly impossible for us to mount a comeback.

March Madness

Here is the NCAA Tournament for the 1941-1942 season!

First up is the West Region

<a href="http://imgur.com/aJYkAHN"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/aJYkAHNl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The West featured some big upsets as 13 seed Illinois State took down 4 seed Seton Hall in the first round while 10 seed VCU took down 7 seed Utah State, 2 seed Missouri, and 6 seed Michigan State. 1 seed Illinois was taken down by Arizona who then took down VCU to advance to the Final Four. The WAC representative Seattle was in this region and lost in the first round as a 15 seed to Missouri.

Next up is the Midwest Region

<a href="http://imgur.com/m04fuVe"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/m04fuVel.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region went down just about as expected besides 12 seed North Dakota State beating 5 seed Kent State in the first round. 1 seed Xavier ran their way through without much trouble, only having one close game on their way to the Final Four.

Next up is the South Region

<a href="http://imgur.com/MfNbEtZ"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/MfNbEtZl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region was pretty fun, as 12 seed Connecticut beat 5 seed Vanderbilt in the first round. Florida State made it to the Elite Eight as a 4 seed, and remember that we beat Florida State this season! That should give the team a lot of confidence going into next season. 6 seed LSU took down 3 seed Memphis and 2 seed Duke before beating Florida State to punch their ticket to the Final Four!

The final region is the East Region.

<a href="http://imgur.com/7wTxRSi"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/7wTxRSil.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This one featured a huge upset! 15 seed Loyola (MD) beat 2 seed Tennessee for the first ever upset of a 2 seed in our short history. There were no other big upsets as 1 seed Pittsburgh faced 2 seed Stanford in the Elite Eight. Stanford won to make them the last team in the Final Four.

<a href="http://imgur.com/OtJJYSH"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/OtJJYSHm.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Arizona took down LSU in the first semifinal and Xavier beat Stanford in the second. Then in a hard fought battle, 5 seed Arizona beat 1 seed Xavier 73-69. Congratulations to Arizona on winning their 2nd National Title!

Arizona has proven that they are winners as they have won 2 of the 3 National Championship games so far. Even as a 5 seed they were able to make their way through and it will be interesting to see how they do in the coming years.

Here is the ode to our 4 seniors this season! Unfortunately only one of them was ever really much of a contributor during his time here.

First up is James Jones! Jones never started a game in his career but appeared in 94 off the bench. He only averaged 2.9 points a game and saw his minutes dwindle each year, and he was named player of the game once. Jones had a career high of 15 points.

The final senior is Chris Lampkin. Lampkin appeared in 27 games off the bench in his career and scored 10 points with 15 rebounds. He was another guy who only went into the game when things were dire. Both him and Lytle were walkons and weren't on scholarship.

1942 Offseason

There was another swap of conferences this year. Xavier left the Big East in favor of the Big 12 and TCU left the Big 12 for the Big East. This makes sense as the Big East is a less prestigious conference and as you see in the Mid-Major polls, teams in the Big East are considered in a mid-major.

Obviously this is very ambitious, as the majority of these guys only have Average interest in us, but I'm switching up my strategy. A lot of these guys who are very interested in us are interested in us and nobody else due to being mediocre. We can try and recruit these guys later on and we won't have to worry about losing out on them. If we can make a hard push at some of these average guys and get them interested in us, we may be able to steal even just one away from another big school.

1942-1943 Season Preview

Here is the preview for the 1942-1943 season!

Athletic Director Goal

The goal for this season is to finish with at least a .500 conference record. Our prestige increased from 1 to 7 this year and we are hoping we can continue to have that rise.

Schedule

This year our schedule is a bit easier than last year as we have tried to bolster wins this year to build on last season. We still have some power conference teams on it though with Washington State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Louisville on the schedule.

This year is the deepest we have ever been and I am comfortable with all 12 of these players. This year we decided to make a change and start Jarvis at PG and switch Bragg to SG. As you may remember, Jarvis was averaging over 4 assists per game and we think that may increase if he is the starting point guard and controlling the offense. Arthur Crumb will be our key player off the bench, and Brandon Worth will be our first big off the bench instead of Donato like last season. Worth is a better defender and should help on the glass. We are going to have to figure out a way to get all of these players in the game, and we may get a bit creative with lineups.

Grand Canyon (0-0) @ Bryant (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 67, Bryant - 57. We had a big lead in this one but a 16-3 run by Bryant saw them tie the game midway through the second half. We went on a run of our own to reclaim the lead and never looked back. John Bragg was the player of the game with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Lamar Herrington had 21 points of his own and Junior Jarvis had 5 assists and 6 points in his point guard role. Brandon Worth came up big off the bench, grabbing 10 rebounds. Cameron Etheridge made his debut and scored 2 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Mark Buster also made his debut and only played one minute. This was a very good start to the season.

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (1-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 52, Grand Canyon - 82. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 20 points and an astonishing 11 assists. This was the first double-double in school history that used assists and not rebounds. It also is the most assists in a game in school history. Lamar Herrington had 17 points and John Bragg had 16. Conrado Ruiz had 9 rebounds while Andrew Turnbull and Brandon Worth each had 8. Worth has been a huge bench asset and he knows his role is to play defense and not shoot.

November 20, 1942

Grand Canyon (2-0) @ Central Arkansas (0-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 105, Central Arkansas - 97 in DOUBLE OT. This one was a thriller as it brought out all of my emotions. We blew a late 9 point lead but then while behind with under a minute left in both regulation and OT we were able to tie it up before taking over in Double OT. This was the first time we've ever hit triple digits. John Bragg was the player of the game with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. All of the starters hit double digits except for Junior Jarvis who fouled out with 7 points and 6 assists. Andrew Turnbull had 18 points and 11 assists and Conrado Ruiz had 15 points and 10 assists. I believe this is the first game where we have had two players record a double-double. Lamar Herrington had 25 points and Arthur Crumb had 13. I'm not sure if we've ever had five players scoring in double digits before.

UMass Lowell (0-2) vs. Grand Canyon (3-0)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 71, Grand Canyon - 60. As always we opened up a huge lead and then blew it due to foul trouble. The team has a lot of promise but we can't quite break through as far as consistency is concerned. John Bragg had 15 points, Conrado Ruiz had 12, and Lamar Herrington had 10.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, North Carolina Central - 52. This was a great way to bounce back from the loss to UMass Lowell. Andrew Turnbull was the player of the game with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lamar Herrington, John Bragg, and Arthur Crumb each had 11 points while Junior Jarvis only played 16 minutes due to foul trouble.

Recruiting News

We have our first recruit! PG Chris Eastwood has committed to play for us next year. Eastwood is a very good 3 point shooter with the potential to get even better. It is really his only way to score, but he is also amazing at handling the ball and should limit turnovers. He is listed as a point guard and could play the position well or be a great shooting guard.

Prairie View A&M (1-3) vs. Grand Canyon (4-1)

Final Score: Prairie View A&M - 68, Grand Canyon - 90. Conrado Ruiz was the star in this one, recording 18 points and 7 rebounds. John Bragg also had 18 points and Junior Jarvis had 8 assists. The bench came up big with 28 points in this one. We looked very good and routed an inferior opponent as expected. Our difficult stretch of games is coming up against power opponents, and hopefully we can win a few of them.

December 9, 1942

Grand Canyon (5-1) @ Washington State (2-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 48, Washington State - 71. This one was over 5 minutes in as Washington State was shooting over 50% and we were shooting under 25% throughout the first half. Andrew Turnbull had 14 points and John Bragg had 13. Junior Jarvis picked up 4 fouls in only 13 minutes (he had 2 fouls in the first minute and twice when subbed in after that he picked up a foul on the very next possession). Arthur Crumb inexplicably went 1-11 and despite being cold kept shooting.

December 13, 1942

Houston Baptist (3-3) vs. Grand Canyon (5-2)

Final Score: Houston Baptist - 82, Grand Canyon - 65. I went into this game expecting a 25 point victory and instead we got this. Again every starter almost fouled out as we picked up 12 fouls after 8 minutes of game time. We put Houston Baptist in the double bonus in under 10 minutes in both halves, making it impossible for us to do anything. They shot over 60% and it was impossible to counteract that with the 30 free throws they attempted as well as our 18 turnovers. We now have two very bad and embarrassing home losses on our resume.

December 18, 1942

Grand Canyon (5-3) @ Oklahoma State (5-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 75, Oklahoma State - 89. We played well in this one but Oklahoma State played better. We weren't able to overcome 30 team fouls but we still played well against a very good opponent. John Bragg led the way with 15 points as 5 of our starters hit double digits. Junior Jarvis fouled out again but had 9 points and 5 assists. If he didn't get into foul trouble in almost every game I wonder how many assists he would be able to average.

Grand Canyon (5-4) @ Iowa State (6-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 66, Iowa State - 58. We looked really good in this one and pulled off the upset. After coming up short against our first two power conference teams it is nice to pull off the win here. Lamar Herrington was the player of the game with 22 points and Conrado Ruiz pulled down 12 rebounds. John Bragg did a bit of everything with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 85, Maryland Eastern Shore - 55. Arthur Crumb was the player of the game, coming off the bench with 23 points and 6 rebounds. We went 15-23 from 3 points range in this one and absolutely demolished them. Conrado Ruiz had 10 rebounds and three starters had at least 10 points. Lamar Herrington and Junior Jarvis both had 5 assists.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 64, Texas State - 56. We beat Texas State in the same way we usually get beat, foul trouble and turnovers. We hit a cold streak down the stretch but Texas State had multiple turnovers and couldn't come back. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 15 points and 8 assists. John Bragg had 12 points and Lamar Herrington had 14. This gives us a 4 game win streak going into our toughest game of the season.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 47, Louisville - 72. We were beat as expected but looked good outside of 18 turnovers. Louisville is simply a much better team and I wish we would have been able to hang with them a little better, but I can't be upset with how the game went.

Grand Canyon (9-5) @ Dartmouth (4-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 74, Dartmouth - 63. This one was close until we started to pull away with 5 minutes left. I thought we were going to let it slip due to terrible free throw shooting but we were able to hold on despite. I'm not exaggerating about the free throws, as we shot 39.3%, that's 11 for 28. John Bragg was the player of the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. Junior Jarvis had 14 points and 4 assists. We played well in this one besides the free throw shooting, and if we had shot better there then it wouldn't have been close. This is the last nonconference game, on to the WAC we go with high hopes!

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 54, New Mexico State - 59. Fouls killed us in this one. We committed 24 fouls to their 10 and we shot 21% from 3 as the team inexplicably took 42 three pointers! John Bragg had 18 points and Junior Jarvis had 8 assists. Lamar Herrington went 0-8 from 3.

UT Rio Grande Valley (8-9) vs. Grand Canyon (11-7)

Final Score: UT Rio Grande Valley - 67, Grand Canyon - 44. John Bragg had 10 points and we were demolished. We shot under 30% and the game was over by halftime. This one should have been an easy win and we have proven to be much better on the road than at home this season

January 30, 1942

UMKC (9-9) vs. Grand Canyon (11-8)

Final Score: UMKC - 72, Grand Canyon - 67. We lost this one at the end thanks to allowing multiple offensive rebounds instead of simply grabbing the defensive board and winning the game. We already have 4 conference losses this year and we only had 5 last year. This is an awful way to start, especially given that two of these should have been easy wins. This should have been our best season to date but instead it has been severely disappointing as it looks like we peaked last year despite not having a single impact player be a senior.

Grand Canyon (11-9) @ Cal State Bakersfield (5-15)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Cal State Bakersfield - 60. We had a huge comeback at the end of the game despite missing crucial free throws to give Cal State Bakersfield a chance at the win. Lamar Herrington and John Bragg each had 15 points and Junior Jarvis had 14 points and 6 assists. This was a big win and hopefully it starts a winning streak as we've been much better on the road than at home.

Final Score: New Mexico State - 65, Grand Canyon - 72. John Bragg was the player of the game with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Andrew Turnbull recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Lamar Herrington had 16 points and Junior Jarvis had 15 points. Even though we won we went 17-33 from the free throw line which definitely needs to improve.

Chicago State (10-14) vs. Grand Canyon (14-9)

Final Score: Chicago State - 85, Grand Canyon - 73. Chicago State was shooting over 70% until 3 minutes left in the second half and never went more than 4 possessions without scoring. If they shot even only 60% then we easily win the game. Our 15 turnovers didn't help either but this performance was even better than what Louisville did against us and we had absolutely no chance. Junior Jarvis had 19 points with 6 assists but unfortunately couldn't do it all himself. We shot only 41% and it is amazing we only lost by 12. Also this is another home loss against an inferior team.

February 20, 1943

Seattle (19-6) vs. Grand Canyon (14-10)

Final Score: Seattle - 60, Grand Canyon - 32We shot 13% in the first half en route to 13 points and the second half wasn't much better with 19 points. We ended up shooting 17% for the game. We are in 7th place in the conference and have done absolutely terrible so far. We are guaranteed to be worse than last season now in a season where I fully expected to finish with 20+ wins and win the conference. This is a huge disappointment and we are now 0-10 against Seattle.

February 25, 1943

Grand Canyon (14-11) @ UMKC (12-13)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 77, UMKC - 87. It seems like every loss we've had this season has been because the worst case scenario has happened. We had 10-15 chances to come back and take the lead but our 19 turnovers killed us. I'm beginning to wonder if the game is just randomized as the talent level seems to have no bearing on actual performance through 4 seasons. Up to this point I have coached every game in all 4 seasons but the rest of this season I will simply be simulating as it has become boring to play through only to watch the team do whatever they can to lose.

Grand Canyon (14-12) @ UT Rio Grande Valley (10-16)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 55, UT Rio Grande Valley - 45. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 14 points and John Bragg had 12 of his own. This one was a low scoring affair and we were able to pull out the win. It's amazing that we have the same amount of losses at home and on the road but 4 wins at home and 11 wins on the road.

Cal State Bakersfield (7-20) vs. Grand Canyon (15-12)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 60, Grand Canyon - 59. Of course we lose! If a developer or mod could please send me a pm and explain the intricacies of the game to me it would be much appreciated, because at this point it is very hard to believe there is anything other than blind luck to be successful. We now officially have a losing record in conference play in a season where I expected to lose at most 3 games and easily take the championship.

Utah Valley (12-16) vs. Grand Canyon (15-13)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 58, Grand Canyon - 54. Another loss to a sub .500 team. The conference should have been ours this season with all of the terrible teams but our terrible performances were too much. This team is not much better than the 1939 or 1940 teams that features only one player who wasn't absolutely terrible. I will give the next season a go but if things remain the same the series will be ending as I'm beginning to lose all of my enjoyment of the game. If anything I will simply simulate all the games so I can get through seasons faster and get no enjoyment out of them.

We are the 6 seed in the WAC tournament. I expect to get throttled in the first round by a terrible team.

First Round

#3 Utah Valley (13-16) vs. #6 Grand Canyon (15-14)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 60, Grand Canyon - 69. This is probably our biggest upset ever as we are a 3 win team disguised as a now 16 win team. Sorry for sounding so bitter here but I am getting no enjoyment out of these simulations. Andrew Turnbull had 19 points and 10 rebounds and John Bragg had 18 points.

Second Round

#2 UMKC (17-13) vs. #6 Grand Canyon (16-14)

Final Score: UMKC - 70, Grand Canyon - 56. This embarrassment of a season has finally come to an end and I expect that the Athletic Director will be very upset with my performance. I'm not really sure where to go from here as we should have won about 25 games this season but with how we played I'm surprised we won more than 5.

1943 March Madness

Here is the NCAA Tournament for the 1942-1943 season!

First up is the West Region!

<a href="http://imgur.com/THshX9e"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/THshX9el.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The West saw plenty of regions as 1 seed Syracuse was knocked off by 8 seed Kentucky in the second round. 14 seed Mount St. Mary's beat 3 seed Stanford and 11 seed William & Mary beat 6 seed Temple. They faced each other in the Round of 32 and William & Mary made it to the Sweet 16 where they lost to 7 seed Florida State. Florida State beat 4 seed Vanderbilt to advance to the Final Four!

Next up is the Midwest Region!

<a href="http://imgur.com/wGD9mbp"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/wGD9mbpl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region went just about as expected as there were no first round upsets besides the 9 seed winning. 5 seed Texas beat 1 seed Louisville in the Sweet 16 but lost to 3 seed Gonzaga in a bid for the Final Four!

Next up is the South Region!

<a href="http://imgur.com/fNknbRV"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/fNknbRVl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

We had some big upsets in the South headlined by 9 seed LaSalle beating 1 seed Duke in the Round of 32. 12 seed Vermont beat 5 seed LSU and 11 seed Wichita State beat 6 seed Minnesota. 2 seed North Carolina beat 4 seed Wake Forest to advance to the Final Four.

Last we have the East Region.

<a href="http://imgur.com/1xq1PnV"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/1xq1PnVl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

The East featured some fun games as once again we had the 14 and 11 seeds win. 14 seed Hampton beat 3 seed Maryland and 11 seed Iona beat Miami. Iona won their matchup to make the Sweet 16. 7 seed Charlotte took down 2 seed Villanova and then Iona to make the Elite 8. Arizona came in as a 4 seed but it didn't deter them from bullying their way through and making their THIRD trip to the Final Four!

Now it's time for the Final Four!

<a href="http://imgur.com/dBhdW74"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/dBhdW74l.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Florida State took down North Carolina in the first semifinal and Arizona beat Gonzaga in the second. Florida State took down Arizona easily in the championship to keep the Wildcats from winning another title. Congratulations to the 7 seed Florida State Seminoles!

As you probably noticed, this season was a huge disappointment. This season we expected to win the conference and finish with 20+ wins while being featured prominently on the mid-major rankings. Now we still have potential for next season as well but we are losing two key players in Crumb and Ruiz.
