1943 Offseason

There was some conference movement this year. Winthrop has left the Big South for the Southern Conference and VMI has left the Southern Conference to join the Big South. Now for a much bigger move Colorado has left the Pac-12 for the WCC and Gonzaga has left the WCC and will be joining the Pac-12!

Roster News

Junior SG Rubin Johnson has transferred to us from Auburn. Johnson is going to be a guy who will come off the bench once he is eligible to play and is a 3 point specialist.

Here is our roster for the upcoming season

Quick Team News:

We start the year with 18 points in the Mid-Major top 25. Just like last year there are at least 100 teams that received votes.

November 12, 1943

Cal State Fullerton (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Cal State Fullerton - 70, Grand Canyon - 81. Lamar Herrington was the player of the game with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. John Bragg had a huge game with 29 points and 5 rebounds and Junior Jarvis had 13 points and 6 assists. In his debut Gabriel Clay had 1 rebound in 6 minutes. Chris Eastwood also appeared in his first game and had 7 points and 2 rebounds.

November 16, 1943

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (1-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 69, Grand Canyon - 71. We overcame an early 13 point deficit to win this one on a buzzer beater by Andrew Turnbull. Turnbull and John Bragg both had 16 points. Junior Jarvis had 12 points with 5 rebounds and 7 assists.

November 20, 1943

Army (0-1) vs. Grand Canyon (2-0)

Final Score: Army - 51, Grand Canyon - 54. Our luck is finally turning! Lamar Herrington hit a buzzer beater to win the game in this one and complete our comeback! Lamar Herrington had 16 points and John Bragg had 11. Hopefully we can continue building on this strong start to the season and wing games by larger margins soon, not that I'm complaining though, a win is a win!

November 24, 1943

Bryant (0-3) vs. Grand Canyon (3-0)

Final Score: Bryant - 59, Grand Canyon - 79. Andrew Turnbull was the player of the game with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Brandon Worth had 12 rebounds and Lamar Herrington and John Bragg each had 14 points. Chris Eastwood had 13 points off the bench.

November 26, 1943

Grand Canyon (4-0) @ Arizona State (1-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Arizona State - 77. We were doomed by 18 turnovers and Arizona State opened a huge early lead. John Bragg had 15 points and Andrew Turnbull had 14 rebounds while Brandon Worth had 10. If we had been able to limit turnovers and get better shots we would have had a chance in this one.

November 28, 1943

Central Arkansas (2-2) vs. Grand Canyon (4-1)

Final Score: Central Arkansas - 53, Grand Canyon - 72. John Bragg was the player of the game with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Junior Jarvis had 10 points and 5 assists and Andrew Turnbull had 11 points and 9 rebounds. We've had a great start to the season so far and hopefully we can keep it going.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Colorado - 50. We got off to a fast start, going up 18-3 to start the game and we never looked back. Brandon Worth had a monster game with 14 points and 14 rebounds and was named player of the game. Lamar Herrington had 13 points and Andrew Turnbull had 11. Herrington also had 7 steals! Mark Buster had a nice game off the bench with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Ranking News

December 6, 1943

Grand Canyon (6-1) @ Tennessee (4-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 79, Tennessee - 103. We were outplayed by a very good Tennessee team. Our 21 turnovers were impossible to overcome and ruined any chance we had of competing. John Bragg had 17 points, Lamar Herrington had 13, and both Andrew Turnbull and Junior Jarvis had 12 points.

December 10, 1943

Grand Canyon (6-2) @ Richmond (3-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Richmond - 77. We were tied at 24 all but Richmond went on a huge run and we couldn't score to save our lives. The 19 turnovers again killed us and this one should have been a lot closer.

December 15, 1943

Grand Canyon (6-3) @ New Orleans (0-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 67, New Orleans - 46. Andrew Turnbull was the player of the game with a monster 16 points and 16 rebounds. John Bragg had 20 points and Junior Jarvis had 6 assists. This was a good team outing and so far we have beaten all of the bad teams we've played which is an improvement over last year's uncertainty.

December 20, 1943

Grand Canyon (7-3) @ Texas Tech (4-4)

Grand Canyon - 90, Texas Tech - 88 in OT. We overcame a 14 point halftime deficit and 45% free throw shooting (9-20). John Bragg was the player of the game with 32 points and 8 rebounds. Lamar Herrington had 20 points and Junior Jarvis had 11 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds, the closest we have ever come to a triple double. This one was a huge win as we not only beat a power conference team but had a huge comeback.

December 24, 1943

Grand Canyon (8-3) @ Virginia (8-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 53, Virginia - 88. We were absolutely demolished by Virginia as they got out to an early 20 point lead. We had 17 turnovers and couldn't stop their offense. Christ Eastwood had 14 points off the bench Andrew Turnbull and John Bragg had 10 points each.

December 28, 1943

Grand Canyon (8-4) @ Eastern Washington (4-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 64, Eastern Washington - 78. We had 24 fouls to their 7 and 13 players appeared in the game for us. We've never had that many players in a game, even in a blowout. This one should have been an easy win for us but the fouls were too much to overcome. We only attempted 3 free throws to their 27. This one is a big disappointment and I feel like 99 out of 100 times we win this game and this was the worst case scenario.

Grand Canyon (8-5) @ NC State (8-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 73, NC State - 86. We played absolutely terribly in this one, as we let NC State break out a huge lead only 8 minutes in and couldn't come back. Every loss we have had this year the game has been decidedly over less than 10 minutes in. We have played some good teams but we are beating ourselves. John Bragg had 21 points and both Junior Jarvis and Lamar Herrington had 11.

Grand Canyon (8-6) @ Houston Baptist (2-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 71, Houston Baptist - 60. Junior Jarvis was the player of the game with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists. John Bragg had 15 points and 7 rebounds and Andrew Turnbull had 10 points. Mark Buster had a nice game off the bench with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

January 10, 1944

Grand Canyon (9-6) @ Nebraska (7-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 75, Nebraska - 88. We played poorly in this one in a game we had the chance to win. We now have 6 losses and none have been closes losses as I believe this 13 points loss is the smallest margin. Junior Jarvis and Chris Eastwood each had 18 points and Jarvis also had 8 assists. This was the last nonconference game of the season. Although we have 7 losses only one (Eastern Washington) was a "bad" loss as all of the others were against quality opponent.

January 15, 1944

Grand Canyon (9-7) @ Utah Valley (7-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 82, Utah Valley - 73. This was an encouraging start to the season as we looked solid throughout the game. Junior Jarvis and John Bragg both had amazing games but Jarvis was awarded the player of the game. He had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists while Bragg had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Lamar Herrington had 14 points and Andrew Turnbull had 15.

New Mexico State (8-8) vs. Grand Canyon (10-7)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 60, Grand Canyon - 78. Junior Jarvis and Arthur Bragg again both had great games and Jarvis again edged out Bragg as the player of the game. Jarvis had 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists while Bragg had 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Andrew Turnbull had 12 points.

Final Score: Seattle - 78, Grand Canyon - 84. We finally beat Seattle on our 11th try! Junior Jarvis again edged out John Bragg as the player of the game. Jarvis had 24 points, 2 rebounds, and 6 assists while Bragg had 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Jarvis was 7-8 from 3.

January 27, 1944

Grand Canyon (12-7) @ Chicago State (9-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Chicago State - 75. Once again we had no chance in this one due to fouls. We committed 17 fouls in the first half and 27 overall. Lamar Herrington had 16 points and both Andrew Turnbull and John Bragg had 14 points. We had 13 players appear in this one as the fouls killed us in a game we had hoped to win.

Grand Canyon (12-8) @ UT Rio Grande Valley (9-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 62, UT Rio Grande Valley 39. The team made up for the game against Chicago State with a great outing here. John Bragg was the player of the game with 26 points and 7 rebounds. We had only 17 fouls in this one which was much better than the last game. Now we are 4-1 in conference play heading into February, which is a luxury given we only won 5 conference games last season.

Recruiting News

We have two new recruits this week! Charles Constantine and Gerald Jeffers have committed to play for Grand Canyon next season. Constantine is a Center from North Sydney, Canada who is a defensive specialist. He will never be great on the offensive side of things but he has the potential to be a prolific rebounder and defender. Jeffers is a Small Forward from Phoenix, Arizona who is currently a 3 point specialist with the potential to be a very good scoring threat. He is an average defender and could develop into a very good offensive player.

UMKC (4-15) vs. Grand Canyon (13-8)

Final Score: UMKC - 62, Grand Canyon - 69. This one was disappointing as we blew a 23 point lead but luckily were able to hold on. John Bragg had 21 points and was named the player of the game. Lamar Herrington had 16 points and Andrew Turnbull had 11. It looked like the team got complacent with the big win and allowed UMKC to come back. This is our 5th conference win, matching our total from last year.

Cal State Bakersfield (11-9) vs. Grand Canyon (14-8)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 68, Grand Canyon - 61. We were killed by fouls again (a common theme in our losses) as we committed 26 (to their 15 - another common theme). Lamar Herrington left with an injury after 2 seconds and will be out 39 days. Andrew Turnbull had 20 points and 10 rebounds while John Bragg had 27 points.

Team News:

SF Lamar Herrington was injured in the game and will be out for 39 days. Cameron Ethridge will take his spot in the lineup.

Utah Valley (10-12) vs. Grand Canyon (14-9)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 61, Grand Canyon - 58. These are two games we absolutely should have won and this one was terrible. We committed 26 fouls to their 16 (again notice the theme here, paging the refs union!). Cameron Ethridge, John Bragg, and Junior Jarvis all had 15 points and Brandon Worth had 12 rebounds. We went on multiple long scoring droughts and couldn't get anything done.

Grand Canyon (14-10) @ Seattle (15-9)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 77, Seattle - 83. This was another difficult loss to take as we had 18 turnovers and now have lost 3 games in a row. John Bragg had 34 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists while Junior Jarvis had 15 points and 8 assists. Andrew Turnbull had 17 points. We need to pick it up the next few games and get out of this slump.

Grand Canyon (14-11) @ New Mexico State (11-14)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 67, New Mexico State - 81. All four of these last games were winnable and I honestly have no idea how we lost any of them. We had 16 turnovers in this one and Andrew Turnbull had 21 points. We have dropped from 1st in the conference at 5-1 to 4th in 5-5.

UT Rio Grande Valley (10-15) vs. Grand Canyon (14-12)

Final Score: UT Rio Grande Valley - 58, Grand Canyon - 87. John Bragg had 19 points and it looks like this series will be coming to an end as the coding of the game makes no sense and is inconsistent.

Final Score: Chicago State - 77, Grand Canyon - 57.

This is the last post of the series. Thanks for reading.
