<span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Around the Ring:</strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

*Edge suffered a slight neck injury at Smackdown this week due to a botched move by Chavo Guererro. He's not expected to miss any time.</p><p> </p><p>

*Bubba Ray Dudley injured his back on RAW but he isn't expected to miss the next show.</p><p> </p><p>

*Speaking of Bubba, he was vocal this week urging management to dump both Lance Storm and Rico.</p><p> </p><p>

*The Undertaker was said to be very down on Jamie Noble. Meanwhile Hulk Hogan was dismissive of Jamie Noble and Brock Lesnar showed he didn't think much of Cruiserweight champion Billy Kidman.</p><p> </p><p>

*WWE officials are reportedly unconcerned about ratings during some performer's segments on both shows. The feeling is good storytelling will turn those around in due time. </p><p> </p><p>

*WWE.com announced today that beginning next month the Ross Report will be making a return.</p><p> </p><p>

*Indie performer Steve Haworth who performs as Nigel McGuiness will be going by the name of Angus Bennett. Haworth of course debuted this week helping William Regal and Lance Storm attack the Dudley Boys.</p><p> </p><p>

*For those who thought the WWE was done adding talent after the past flurry of signings, sources say don't be surprised if they stockpile even more in coming weeks.</p><p> </p><p>

*While some felt Eric Bischoff went over the creative line in his promo about Stephanie McMahon, we're told she was supportive and felt it was appropriate given their on-air rivalry.</p>

Episode 501----January Week 1, 2003

Last week a fan, or so we thought, got involved in a big tag team match. During the last week we’ve learned he was a plant, part of a scheme by Regal and Storm. This week we’ll see RAW’s latest newcomer make his in-ring debut when the three of them take on the entire Dudley Family.

A huge match last week saw Booker T pull of what some may have called an upset on Triple H which left the Game in a meltdown. You can never count the Cerebral Assassin out or put him out of mind. Tune in this week to see how Triple H responds.

Last week Kane demanded a one on one title shot against Shawn Michaels. Eric Bischoff’s response was a non-title tag match with the World Tag Team Champions, Kane, and Michaels. Kane and Michaels won, earning the Big Red Machine a title shot but this week it’s Michaels and Jericho one on one. Where Y2j goes, Christian won’t be far behind but what about Kane?

Announced Matches:

Bubba Ray, D-Von, and Spike vs William Regal, Lance Storm, and Angus Bennett

Jazz makes her in-ring return from injury versus Ivory

Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho (Non-Title match)

<strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WWE Signs New Broadcast Deals</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

WWE recently finalized new broadcast deals for both Raw and Smackdown placing their television programs in every major country (that is the reason for the higher cumulative ratings compared to last week). These are multiyear deals and are expected to increase company earnings. </p><p> </p><p>

WWE also extended deals for their various pay-per-view providers:</p><p> </p><p>

iNDEMAND– extended for 2 years</p><p>

DirecTV – extended for 2 years </p><p>

Viewers Choice – extended for 3 years</p><p>

CANAL Digital – extended for 3 years</p><p>

Viasat – extended for 3 years</p><p>

Sky Box Office – extended for 3 years</p><p>

Vu! – extended for 3 years</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">WWE Roster Updates</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

-WWE has allowed the contract of Barry "B2-Bull" Buchanan to expire. He had asked for a raise but WWE had no creative plans for him and he was future endeavored by the company at the beginning of January. </p><p> </p><p>

-WWE's Talent Relations department has been very busy the last few weeks finalizing a lot of contracts with younger up and coming talent for their development program. It is possible that WWE will add an additional developmental territory beyond OVW given the new influx of talent that will come. </p><p> </p><p>

-Expect some marquee names to be back on the main rosters as WWE begins the push for Wrestlemania.</p>

The Ross Report

Howdy folks! It’s a new year and with it comes new opportunities in the world of sports entertainment. Everyone is gearing up for the Royal Rumble at the end of the month and it’s always interesting to see where the ‘powers that be’ wish to take the company creatively. The oft-mentioned Road to WrestleMania is beginning to heat up and there is truly nothing like it.

This week’s RAW I thought laid some creative plans and was highlighted by a top notch effort by Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho. It should come to no one’s surprise of course, both of them could tear the house down with a broom but together it was a pay per view quality main event which was given away for free on TV. Some may question why but I can tell you that as much fun as it was to call it, I would love to do it again, maybe at a WrestleMania main event instead. As we presumably move towards that HBK-Kane showdown we also got to see Triple H and Booker T tangle up over the last couple weeks and both of them can bring out the best in one another. The wildcard is Goldust whose persona is not what it once was but don’t believe for a second it can’t make a return. His showdown with Triple H shows us glimpses of a serious threat and I look forward to calling their match this Monday. Finally I’m interested in where the Eric Bischoff-Vince McMahon interactions go from here. It’s never wise to cross the boss as they say but these two have had so much animosity over almost a decade that I can’t believe we won’t see some old fashioned ‘shoots’ in the near future.

Smackdown’s title picture is a little less clear cut but with both Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar chasing the Big Show we’re guaranteed some drama-filled twists and turns and with Paul Heyman in the center you never know what will happen next. For all his faults, and there are many, there may not be a better talker or strategist in the business today than Heyman. On the tag team front you may not get four better or harder workers than Edge, Rey Mysterio, and Los Guererros. All four of them have the talent and the psychology to communicate effectively with our fans and make them invest their emotions and their time in the storyline while the introduction of Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas into the situation injects pure athleticism from two bona fide amateur threats. Like the WWE title picture, having the Champions fend off two opposing types of enemy could pay dividends for the fans.

One subject that’s been a heavy topic in the wrestling websites and reports is the recent flurry of contract signings by the WWE. It’s no secret they have stocked the developmental pond and if projections bear out they may have several years worth of new big time talents. That may be great for WWE but I’d be lying if I said part of me felt it wasn’t good for pro wrestling/sports entertainment. Gone are the territories and frankly gone is the competition but there are still several ‘indies’ which men and women can cut their teeth and learn the ropes both literally and figuratively and I don’t know how much it helps the business and industry for so many up and comers to be under one roof. Maybe I’m wrong but I think the mentality that the ‘war’ never ended may hurt the business we all love in the long run.

That’s it for good ol’ JR this week. See y’all on Monday Night.

[JR and the King then throw us to the Coach who’s standing by with Triple H and Ric Flair. Triple H tells him that the old adage says be careful what you ask for because you may get it. Last week Goldust decided to puff up his chest and stick his nose where it didn’t belong and tonight he will pay the price like his buddy Booker T. But don’t blame Triple H and don’t blame Ric Flair for what happens. Blame Goldust because he asked for it.]

Test dominates the match in the early going but Dreamer won't quit and begins to put together some momentum. Unfortunately for him that ends when Test catches him with a boot to the face when Dreamercharges into the corner. A press slam, running clothesline and side slam set Dreamer up and when he stands, Test kicks his head off with a running boot.

Winner: Test

The crowd goes crazy and Batista can't believe it, sure that he'd ended Hardy the month before. As he's spoiling for the fight, Hardy comes from behind, through the crowd, and climbs to the top rope. When Batista turns, Hardy leaps off with a missile dropkick which sends the big man sprawling to the outside. Hardy stands tall in the ring while Batista slaps the apron in fury before officials and security rush down to make sure nothing else happens.]

Before the match begins, Morley gets a mic and informs RVD that this match has a couple of different rules than usual. Firstly this is no disqualification---for Morley. RVD also has a five second countout and last but not least, Morley has a ten count to kick out of a pin. RVD just shakes his head in disgust but the match is on.

We see several opportunities where RVD barely beats the count back into the ring, and of course Morley brings a chair into the ring but when he swings, RVD ducks and he cracks the referee. When Morley turns around RVD kicks the chair into his face. RVD climbs to the top and flies off with the Five Star Frog Splash. Another referee runs down to the ring and begins the ten count which the crowd counts along with, until he calls for the bell.

Triple H and Flair come down to the ring first, and then we see the lights go out and we hear Goldust’s theme.

Gold flecks fall from the ceiling as the Bizarre One, looking as he did in years gone by comes out onto the stage. His eyes are deadly serious as he walks down to the ring in his gold robe with the long haired wig. He disrobes outside and walks up the stairs to enter the ring. Triple H looks like he did not expect this but he quickly gets his game face on (no pun intended) and the ref calls for the bell.

Goldust is all business and from the get-go he unleashes on Triple H putting him on defense early on. From one corner to the other Goldust shows himself to be a veteran of the ring and seems to have an answer for anything Triple H wants to do. He sends Triple H over the top with a clothesline which draws Flair onto the apron. Goldust brings him into the ring over the top and they go through a small nostalgic bit reminding the crowd of a younger Flair and Dusty Rhodes including a bionic elbow which sends Flair into the corner. Goldust sets him up for Shattered Dreams but before he can deliver the kick Triple H climbs back in and hits a low blow which the referee doesn’t see as he’s dealing with Flair. Triple H turns Goldust around and delivers a Pedigree for the win.

[As the bell continues to ring, Triple H and Flair begin picking Goldust apart. For a moment it appears he makes a comeback, fighting them both off, but then the numbers catch up with him. Finally, Triple H delivers another Pedigree to a nearly limp Goldust and they stand over his body.]

Kane goes to turn away but Michaels grabs his arm, causing Kane to turn back to him. Kane says that he didn't go out there to save him, he went out to preserve him. Because Kane is the only person who is allowed to end Shawn Michaels and at the Royal Rumble that title and his soul will belong to Kane!

Kane walks off and for the first time we see a mix of fear and doubt on the face of the World Heavyweight Champion.]

She says it is time that following last week on SmackDown, it is clear that she must step in and restore order to the WWE Championship picture. She calls Kurt Angle to the ring. He comes out and Stephanie says it would be too easy to punish him for interrupting the main event of SmackDown’s first show of 2003 but she understands why he did it. And that brings us to Brock Lesnar who is now called to the ring. Lesnar comes out and he and Angle almost go nose to nose, but Stephanie puts her body in the middle of both men and tells them that if they ever want the hope of holding the WWE title again, they will back down now. Both men do but do so reluctantly. </p><p> </p><p> Stephanie says that it would be easy to blame Brock Lesnar for screwing Kurt Angle last month at Armageddon and it would be easy to say that his actions are the actions that set this all off in motion. But the truth is, the person to blame here might very well be “me, Stephanie McMahon. The truth is when I delayed Brock’s rematch following the Survivor Series I did it with the best of intentions and I did it to protect my long term investment in the Next Big Thing. But in doing so, I caged an animal. So, I apologize to you both but the question remains what is next for the WWE Championship since you both have a valid claim to deserve the sho….”</p><p> </p><p> This brings out Big Show and Paul Heyman to the top of the stage. Heyman says that neither Kurt Angle nor Big Show have a valid shot at the WWE Title because they both failed. He tells the audience not to blame The Big Show because Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle can’t keep screwing with each other. It’s not their fault that the egos in that ring cannot be contained and it only validates the business decision that Paul Heyman made in November when he screwed Brock Lesnar out of the WWE Championship so that Paul Heyman’s weapon of mass destruction, The Big Show, could rightfully lay claim to the throne. As far as they are concerned, neither Brock nor Kurt have any rights to this belt.</p><p> </p><p> Stephanie says it doesn’t really matter what Heyman or Big Show say because all that matters is what Stephanie thinks. And she thinks both Brock and Angle deserve a shot. An equal shot. The same shot that 28 other men will receive and that is the shot to main event under the bright lights of Wrestlemania. Both men deserve this and so they shall have it: Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle are officially entrants into the 2003 Royal Rumble Match and if one of them wins, they will go to Wrestlemania to fight for that WWE Championship. But that’s in a few weeks. Here and now is what matters and so tonight two things will happen. Tonight, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar will be back in this ring together but they will be on the same team when they take on Los Guerreros in our main event and if they lay hands on each other before, during or after that match – both Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle are out of the Royal Rumble match and will be suspended. Through all of this Big Show and Paul Heyman are clearly enjoying the interraction’s but their faces change when Stephanie turns to them and says that Big Show is not off the hook. He will defend the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble. The story is that Benoit thinks early on that Cena is a chump and isn’t really taking anything he does seriously – for instance, a sequence occurs where Benoit drops Cena on his head from a German suplex, covers, Cena kicks out at 2 and Benoit smiles a toothy grin like he would at a child. This continues for a bit but it soon turns when Benoit, arrogantly, goes for a lame cover and Cena reverses it into a small package for a two count, follows that up by whipping Benoit into the ropes, hitting a drop kick and a German of his own for a legitimate two count. This brings Benoit to attention and both men start having a real hard hitting match that eventually spills to the floor and is a fist fight on the floor. Back in the ring, Cena drops Benoit with a leg drop and soon hits the F-U which Benoit barely kicks out of. After some more back and forth, Benoit is able to lock in the Crippler Crossface which Cena struggles to get out of. He rolls out of it but Benoit quickly has it back in. Ratings Update

Raw: 30.14 (+0.84)

SmackDown: 28.50 (-0.48)

WWE Roster Updates

-WWE has decided to not renew the limited contract that they had signed with Australian talent, Nathan Jones. At one point last fall, Jones was to receive a push on the main roster after gaining some notoriety during the World Wrestling Allstars tours of 2001-2002. WWE will allow his deal to end which is scheduled to end around the Royal Rumble. He is not expected to be called to tv. This is the second talent in the last month to be quietly shuffled off of the roster after WWE parted ways with Raven.

-Christopher Nowinski has been assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling for more training.

-Jimmy Yang has signed a deal to return to WWE. Originally part of the "WCW 24" (talents whose contracts were picked up with the WCW purchase two years ago), Yang had been assigned to HWA and was there until January of last year when WWE released him. He is not expected to return to development, instead he is expected to debut before Wrestlemania on the SmackDown brand.

An exciting second week of sports entertainment on both RAW and Smackdown so let’s dive right into it. During the course of watching, or in RAW’s case re-watching via VCR, I jotted down some notes of things that caught my eye and it was a lot.

RAW

I’d be lying if I said I was completely comfortable with this angle concerning Test and the beautiful Stacy Keibler. While it may be helping get Test over as the a-hole heel for how he’s treating her, there is a fine line between entertainment and cringe-worthy. The creative team would be wise to keep that line in view.

I’m not sure how long this lackey role will continue for Chief Morley. He’s doing a good job, as seen in his power grab this week versus RVD but I would not be surprised to see him either replaced or the position eliminated completely. It’s not as if Eric Bischoff cannot be the hated authority figure on his own and in some cases Morley may be sucking some of that heat out of the room.

What a surprise to see Paul Ellering back on television and instantly working his way into a World Tag Team title match this coming Monday. What a rush!

Finally I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Jeff Hardy’s return. It’s been widely reported about his personal demons and recent work issues. I hope for his sake that he learned his lesson and can move forward because in the current RAW landscape he’s easily in the top three long term future prospects and could be a future world champion if he keeps his head on straight.

Smackdown

I couldn’t be more impressed with the growing maturity of Mark Henry. He has all the tools to be a complete monster for the next several years if booked right though I don’t know if I’d have paired him with Steiner so quickly. It will be awful hard to have both of these guys leave the story on the short end of the stick and continue to be thought of as dominant.

Was very very impressed with the Cena/Benoit work this week. Awesome match, great pre-promo, and it left the viewer wanting more which is never a bad thing. These two could be worthy adversaries for years to come.

If I’m being honest, and that’s what I’m paid to be in writing this column, the Smackdown cruiser division is not clicking with me, in a similar way to the RAW women’s division that I’ll discuss in a moment. All of these guys are working hard to get over but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of flash behind it to help the average fan gravitate to the storyline. It may also not help matters to have perhaps your most talented cruiser in Rey Mysterio involved in the tag division. But I do have faith that Kidman, Guido and Noble among the others can connect in a way to make this division which is stocked to the gills with talent, very relevant.

Finally the ongoing saga of the Big Show, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar. What else is there to say? Any combination of these guys can put on a great match when booked correctly though it’s looking more and more like we’re aiming at a mega match between Angle and Lesnar with Big Show as an afterthought. I hope not because I think the big-big man with someone like Heyman involved can not only carry his own water but can create a unique circumstance as someone who keeps Lesnar from being the obvious favorite in strength and size.

Royal Rumble

We have some glimpses already what this annual extravaganza is lining up to be so let’s see so far. Shawn Michaels and Kane will be an interesting bout if for no other reason as the David and Goliath when the pieces are correct always plays well and you can’t get two better participants right now to fit the bill. I hope for the sake of the match they are allowed to put it all out there and not be hamstrung.

As I mentioned the RAW women’s division is treading water but Trish Stratus and Victoria have a chance to turn that around big time with the unusual stipulation of Last Woman Standing. It promises to be brutal and violent. We know Victoria can be a few bricks short of a load but can Trish match her? It’s an interesting question and one I look forward to seeing.

In the same vein Billy Kidman and Guido will have the spotlight and the attention to their division. I think we're going to see some high flying and risk taking to reel the audience in but you don't want it to be a demolition derby with all due respect to Ax and Smash. This is their opportunity and it's all about making the most of them.

Last but certainly not least the return of the immortal Hulk Hogan as the surprise opponent for the Big Show. This certainly throws a monkey wrench in the arm chair booker’s plans because of the history of the man and that title. Could Hogan give another slam heard round the world and take the title home, ready to face an Angle, Lesnar, or whomever at WrestleMania? Time will tell but not a lot of folks made money over the years betting against the Hulkster.

Until next week.
