[RELEASE] 1992: Eye of the Storm

The eye of the storm is a mostly calm region found in the middle of a powerful storm. It is surrounded on all sides by the eyewall, a ring of towering storms where the most severe weather occurs. If one is not careful, one might confuse the calm, still facade with the end of the storm. But they fear the calm, those who know storms.

1992

1991 was a tumultuous year for the wrestling industry. The American wrestling scene was rocked by devastating scandals; the steroid story that just won't go away combined with the the WWF's tasteless use of Sgt. Slaughter as an Iraqi sympathizer moved wrestling from something gently touched upon into the mocked and scorned column. Business has fallen throughout the United States and the WWF in particular lost significant sponsorship and broadcasting opportunities. McMahon's hope is that the recent acquisition of the Nature Boy Ric Flair will goose attendance and revitalize the struggling Federation.

Speaking of Flair...

World Championship Wrestling is reeling from the loss of the longtime figurehead of the NWA. Flair's appearance on WWF television with the NWA title has crippled the credibility of the once proud National Wrestling Alliance. WCW, while still a member in name, has embarked on it's own path. The roster is strong, featuring names like Rick Rude, Sting, Lex Luger, Arn Anderson, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat and many others. The product itself is strong with many saying the Dangerous Alliance storyline is one of the hottest wrestling has had in years, perhaps WCW's best ever. However, a lack of high end star quality holds back the promotion.

A revolution?

Up in the Northeast, a tiny promotion named Eastern Championship Wrestling has emerged from the remnants of the dying TWA. At the helm is Tod Gordon with Eddie Gilbert in tow as a booker. Probably not much to see there. Or is there?

It's still real to me!

In the Southeast, legendary manager Jim Cornette has formed HIS own promotion, Smoky Mountain Wrestling. SMW is trying to save territorial style wrestling, with a territory stretching across the Southeast!

Lucha Libre!

In Mexico, AAA has launched (breaking kayfabe: Yes I know it's early) to compete with CMLL!

The storms have calmed and wrestling is trying to rebuild. The question is whether the storms have passed completely, or are we sitting in the eye waiting for the winds of change to pick up once more!

And don't forget Bobby Heenan's finest hour, literally, as he called the Royal Rumble match. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Just a quick glance so far for SMW

Terry Gordy should have an open contract with SMW. He was being advertised for the first shows and they had already been taped in October/November of 1991.

Carl Stiles isn't in the data and he should be in SMW. He's hired muscle for Dutch at the beginning of the company.

Tony Anthony should have an open contract with SMW. He was being advertised for matches with Primetime Brian Lee from the very beginning. He was also wrestling under a mask as The Dirty Yankee.

Jeff Farmer wrestled one match as The Black Scorpion on the first show of SMW.

Hector Guerrero should also have an open contract. Joey Maggs the same thing. Pat Rose was there as a jobber along with Rip Rogers.

I also should say "Thanks" as well. I'm so excited to really play this mod and it seems rude not to show my appreciation while also pointing out some things.

Great feedback!

I knew this happened! I worked on several of these promotions on different computers and knew some of my stuff was lost when I would bring it back across and re-open lol. SMW fixed except for Carl Stiles as I have no background on him and no basis to add him to the mod. I've written him down as someone to explore.

So I've played around with SMW and WCW so far, and both feds start with their production values considerably low for their respective Broadcast deals. This maybe isn't such a huge deal with WCW as they're the richest company in the world, however it takes a considerable chunk to get SMW up to snuff and IRL they were a small-time oldschool promotion on a small-time station, shouldn't have to spend thousands just for them to not incur penalties.
