Jet Planes & Long Limousines (Crockett Promotions 1987)

Recommended Posts

Special Announcement

The Great American Bash Tour will beginning after the after the next episode of WCW and with that will come a longer, more involved prediction game with some decently high stakes. That said, there will be a special one-off prediction game for the Eddie Graham Memorial Show 1987. It's a quick, 1-show game, so the prize (once I figure one out) will most likely be a small one.

This show will not be written up in full detail (expect something like the April Supershow) since it's not being broadcast. The events and results from this show will have in-game consequences however.

I expect to post the show in about 24 hours, so this will be a quick turnaround.

Fijian Strap Match for the NWA World Championship: Jimmy Snuka vs. Ric Flair ©

There will be interference from the Horseman in this one

The Super Powers vs. The Russian Team

I originally picked the Super Powers....but maybe Texas Red makes an appearance instead

Mike Graham vs. Baron Von Raschke

The Baron needs a win after agreeing to lose to Scott Hall

Hector Guerrero, Wahoo McDaniel & Shane Douglas vs. Big Bubba Rogers & The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette

Cornette will be involved here

The Road Warriors & The Fantastics vs. Kevin Sullivan, The Barbarian & The Grapplers

I don't think even Twin Magic will help the Grapplers here.....but if the Warrior/Fantastics team do lose, it won't be Hawk or Animal counting the lights

Tom Horner vs. Lex Luger w/ JJ Dillon

No Brainer there

The Garvins w/ Precious vs. Barry Windham & Manny Fernandez w/ Paul Jones

Im torn on this one....but I think the heels will prevail

Scott Hall vs. Brian Adams

The streak continues for the moustachio'd man mountain

Television Championship: Ole Anderson vs. Arn Anderson © w/ JJ Dillon

A good old fashioned time limit draw

World Tag Team Championship: The Rock n' Roll Express © vs. The Sheepherders

I'm going for a surprise title change, with the RnR getting the straps back during the Bash tour

Brad Armstrong vs. Ron Simmons

Mike Rotundo & Jimmy Valiant vs. Dick Murdoch & The Spoiler

Someone needs building up for Murdoch.....why not Captin' Mike

Tie Breaker #1) What will be the highest rated match on the show? Super Powers/Russians

Tie Breaker #2) What will be the lowest rated match on the show? Horner/Luger

Tie Breaker #3) What overall letter grade will the show receive? B+

<p>Ric Flair - <em>Sorry Jimmy, even in your own style of match it just isn't going to happen.</em></p><p>

Super Powers - <em>No one can withstand American and Russian Dreams united!</em></p><p>

Mike Graham - <em>Given it's his dad's tribute show, he should probably pick up a nice win.</em></p><p>

Camp Cornette - <em>I know you haven't technically given them that name, but it does fit no matter the time period.</em></p><p>

Road Warriors & Fantastics - <em>I'm calling this one a DQ finish, as either someone new to the party interferes or Sullivan uses an international object to blast Hawk with.</em></p><p>

Lex Luger</p><p>

The Garvins - <em>I don't think Windham really cares much about the Jones Army, so he would leave Manny to get beaten by Ron if push came to shove.</em></p><p>

Scott Hall - <em>Two big hoss-like studs here, but only one has the majestic mustache that we love around here!</em></p><p>

Anderson time limit draw - <em>10 minute time limit rears it's ugly head here as Arn plays keep-away long enough to retain the title. This one should be a really fun draw on the GAB Tour.</em></p><p>

RNR Express - <em>By pinfall or by DQ, the Express retain.</em></p><p>

Ron Simmons - <em>Brad may be still getting the push, but at some point Ron will catch him, and then it'll be lights out.</em></p><p>

Rotundo & Valiant - <em>Mike would make a solid US champ, but he'd be better if you were to eventually set up a heel turn for him. For now though, he'll make a good run.</em></p><p> </p><p>

1. Snuka vs. Flair</p><p>

2. Horner vs. Luger</p><p>

Sorry for the bump, but I wanted to mention to anyone who enjoys this diary or NWA wrestling from this time period, you need to listen to the What Happened When Mondays podcast with Tony Schiavone and Conrad Thompson that came out today. Today's episode is almost 3 full hours on the Horsemen. As you can always expect with any Conrad Thompson show, it's super well researched and informative. Super enjoyable listen and is getting me even twice as excited about running forward with this diary.

General Diary Feedback: It's always great seeing how someone else takes the initial history and directs elsewhere when it comes to diaries, and like with your WWF diary you've got a great sense of your time period and characters.</p>

Having a great sense of the time period and characters is probably the biggest compliment you could pay me, as that's probably what I value more than all else. Also, nice of you to mention my '91 WWF diary. That's a project/era that I feel I have some unfinished business with and will return to again (with fresh eyes and a new save) at some point I think. Something about that project burned me out much too early and I never got anywhere close to where I wanted to go. I think it's feeling trapped in the early portion of that game with WM7. Logically, you really can only go to Hogan/Savage or Hogan/Slaughter and by default Warrior gets the other guy. That said, after WM7, that time period opens up in-game tremendously and there are a ton of options to go.</p>

And when I say in depth, I mean in depth, the history and storylines surrounding the event, the state of the business at the time, what's going on in other feds.....hence why Wrestlemania 17 for example is a seven hour podcast! Too long you say? Not once you start listening it's not. My dog has never had such long walks until I discovered this show. Give the Starrcades a listen</p>

I would've had a nearly perfect score on this show except not seeing that injury coming! Well, hopefully Barry finds something better to do until Garvin comes back. I don't know if a feud for now with Jimmy Jam would have quite the same effect.</p><p> </p><p>

This outlines the one stumbling block I always have when playing JCP in 87. With Lex having JUST joined the Horsemen, I can't want take him immediately back out to add Windham to the lineup. But by 87 he is just such a stale babyface, Barry needed the huge heel turn that he got in 1988. But it just doesn't feel right to not have him turn to join the Horsemen because along with Flair, Arn and, Tully, he was just such a perfect fit.</p><p> </p><p>

Regardless, good Graham show <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Wow! Was that a kayfabe injury? I've never had a pop-up injury determine a match ending before. Sadly, that's likely the end for Ron as he was 42 by then so even if that's not an actual career-ending injury, he's likely to degrade way too much skill-wise to be of any use.

And I agree with you Beejus. That Windham version was the 2nd best Horseman run after the original imho. The issue is compounded by the fact you have to push Luger to the moon due to his star quality, which means he really needs to be face at some point as he's never going to be the #1 heel with Flair around or even the #2 heel with Tully, and the face side is sadly wide-open since Magnum's cei along with Dusty's age and Nikita's worse than Lex skills. Sting being that freaking good was truly a god-send for late-80's WCW.

Couple of Thoughts

-The Eddie Graham Memorial Prediction game was subject to a recount (luckily the results were still the same despite the numbers being off. By all means, everyone is invited to do their own math as I am a moron at times). SomeLazyMagic took home this particular mini-game. Keep an eye on your PMs SLM, as I'll get a prize sent your way soon.

-Re: the Ron Garvin neck injury--poor Ron was dealt a bad hand on this one (the locker room seems to feel that the heat is on Manny Fernandez for the injury, but Meltzer will have more on that front later). One silver lining here, unlike real life, you won't have to worry about me strapping a rocket to Garvin and having him headline Starrcade with The Nature Boy. That said, this will have a significant impact on my booking plans.

-Re: Barry Windham. I def. hear where everyone is coming from on the Barry/Luger predicament. I have ideas of where I want both guys to go long term, but I do feel that the top of the card on the babyface side def. light. Part of me is regretting turning Barry as early as I did as I wanted to have that run with Windham and Flair on top before the turn. One of the reasons I brought in Snuka when I did was to carry some of the babyface load and have a dancing partner with Ric for the sole reason that I could turn Barry. Again, Ron's injury is def. going to complicate things here but I am developing a backup plan even as I write this.

-Lastly, (and maybe mainly for to4sty) I did fire up the very first episode of the Lapsed Wrestling Fan Podcast and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for the tip! (Also, I did it while walking the dog! :D)

So, seeing as the next episode of WCW was going to more or less launch the GAB Tour, I was thinking of doing another roster/champion post with a show index. Is this needed/helpful to people? Or does this create unnecessary bumps? Thanks for feedback on this!

And while it's an absolute pain to have to completely reshuffle your plans after an injury, the world breathes a sigh of relief at the news that Ron Garvin is nowhere near the main event of Starrcade lol.

Ah the first episode, back when the F Bombs were bleeped and Vince McMahon was a normal human being lol

The industry, especially the WWF, has never been more popular and many companies are bringing in box office record shattering revenue. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> That said, not all the smaller promotions in the United States are not all making the kind of money that the nationally ranked WWF is. For instance, The Fuller group (Continental Championship Wrestling) recently lost it's television deal and is said to be carrying some debt. Dick the Bruiser's company, the WWA, is also running on a shoe-string budget. I'm hearing the infamous G.L.O.W. promotion may even be close to shutting their doors. A smaller group in Canada, Atlantic Grand Prix, is operating at a deficit as well. It'll be interesting to see if one of the larger, more successful companies looks to buy out one of these smaller territories. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> All and all, despite the health of the industry countrywide, the gap between the big and small has never been wider.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><strong>JCP News</strong></span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> -Sadly, Ron Garvin suffered a devastating injury at the Eddie Graham Memorial Show last week. The injury occurred in a back body spot with Manny Fernandez. Jimmy Garvin (who was a participant in the match and, in theory, had a great view), is blaming Fernandez for the miscommunication. For his part, "The Raging Bull" is calling the whole thing a freak accident and is upset for being assigned blame. "Hands of Stone" was officially diagnosed with a broken neck and will be out of action at least a year or more, if he is able to return to the ring at all. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> -Creatively, it'll be interesting to see where Fernandez goes from here. Having lost his tag team partner, Rick Rude, to rehab a few weeks ago, Fernandez has been a bit listless. One idea was to have Fernandez begin a "crippler" gimmick in an attempt to capitalize on the Garvin injury, but creative is still undecided there. The secondary domino effect of the injury is the creative direction of Barry Windham who had been programmed with both Garvins throughout the upcoming Great American Bash tour. I'm hearing that JCP is looking at bringing in a "significant" name to insert into this program to cover for the loss of Garvin.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> </span></span></p><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"> -Speaking of the Great American Bash tour, JCP is set to being the big touring extravaganza next week with shows planned in the North West, South West and Mid South areas. World Championship Wrestling

June Week 3 1987

Official Prediction Card

*Faces always listed first

The Lightning Express vs. Black Bart & Bobby Jaggers

-Brad Armstrong is the biggest guy here

Bobby Fulton vs. The Grappler I

-Fantastics have been looking foolish, they need to step up

Mike Rotundo vs. Manny Fernandez w/ Paul Jones

-I like "The Crippler" Manny Fernandez!

The Road Warriors w/ Paul Ellering vs. Baron Von Rascke & The Spoiler

-no brainer, but I wish the Baron could step up his game!

Scott Hall vs. The Terminator

-Scott "Hot Streak" Hall

Ole Anderson & Jimmy Snuka vs. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard w/ JJ Dillon

-Faces win, Horsemen beat down to follow

Plus: The reunited Four Horsemen make an appearance, including the in-ring return of Tully Blanchard! And Magnum TA will make his first appearance on World Championship Wrestling since his devastating automobile accident! Also, we will hear some comments from Dusty Rhode's mysterious assailant! All this, and more, on the eve of the Great American Bash Tour 1987!

General Diary Feedback: I couldn't help but notice a few "???" in the roster listing...color me intrigued!
