Honestly, the only reason I went against Arn in the last battle royal was because I thought the TV belt would have been perfect for Luger to step in and carry for the Horsemen while Tully is down.

Brad Armstrong - Like you said, you've been purposely giving him a huge push, and winning the TV title would definitely culminate it into showing how serious you are.

Road Warriors

Garvins

Russians

Fantastics

Dick Murdoch

Jimmy Snuka - Jimmy is likely going to be Flair's biggest next challenger, so he picks up a huge win here over Big Bubber.

World Championship Wrestling

Date: Week 2 April 1987

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & David Crockett

Venue: Sioux City Municipal Auditorium (IO)

Attendance: 2,796

Block A Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Road Warriors w/ Paul Ellering vs. The Nightmares (Danny Davis & Ken Wayne)

Poor, poor Danny Davis and Ken Wayne. These poor fellows had a bad 24 hours with the booking office. First, they got a call that informed them they were going to get the biggest break of the career: an invitation to be in the 1987 Crockett Cup! Awesome, right? Wrong. They were paired against The Road Warriors.

I don’t think I need to even explain how this one went.

Winners: The Road Warriors

Grade: (B-)

Interview

Post match, Missy Hyatt had the pleasure of having her first interview with Ellering, Hawk and Animal. The Warriors made it crystal clear that they expected to repeat last year’s feat by taking home the ‘87 Cup and the million dollars.

Grade: (B+)

Block B Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Garvins w/ Precious vs. Al Snow & Tim Patterson

We continued on with some more Crockett Cup qualifying action here. Despite their lack of experience as a unit, The Garvin brothers worked pretty well over Al Snow and Tim Patterson. During the bout, Schiavone and Crockett noted the miscue between Ronnie and Barry Windham during last week’s battle royal as the in-ring action came to screeching halt when “Hands of Stone” Ron Garvin dropped Tim Patterson for a decisive fall.

Winners: The Garvins

Grade: (C-)

Interview

Tony, looking exceptionally suave and dapper this week, trotted to the interview podium where he welcomed Jim Cornette and Big Bubba Rogers. Corny went on to say that he heard all the comments made by “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka last week. It incensed him that Snuka thought he could just stroll on into to Jim Crockett Promotions and get a title match with Ric Flair. Well, Mr. Snuka, according to Corny, the line starts behind Big Bubba Rogers and Rogers will squash Snuka like a bug tonight.

Corny then went on to say that next week he’s debuting his new and improved Midnight Express in their qualifying match for the Crockett Cup and he’s already got a lot ways that he and his boys will spend the million.

Grade: (C+)

United States Heavyweight Championship: Kendall Windham vs. “Captain Redneck” Dick Murdoch ©

Young Kendall Windham (younger brother of Barry) made his return to the ring from an injury this evening with a chance of a lifetime. Unfortunately, Murdoch was very rough with youngster and this match was rather one-sided. Murdoch taunted with young man, even letting him up on a count of 2 to toy with him.

This cat and mouse game didn’t last long as “The Boogie Woogie Man” made his way out from the back, still livid with Murdoch following their bout from the Clash. Valiant came to the ring and called to Murdoch and the two began a shouting match.

That’s when Windham slipped behind and schoolboyed the veteran and the fans got on their feet ready for a Cinderella story! It wasn’t to be however as Murdoch kicked out just at the nick of time. That close call was all motivation Murdoch needed shortly thereafter dropped young Windham with a Brainbuster and the 3 count.

Winner: Dick Murdoch

Grade: ©

Interview

‘Stash Schiavone was back out again, this time welcoming “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes to the fold. Dusty rapped about tonight’s battle royal, saying it was his turn to take the limelight and go on to face Arn Anderson for the Television title. Dusty went on to mention the Crockett Cup, and said that alongside his super partner Nikita Koloff, that they were ready to go all the way and do what had to be done.

Grade: (C+)

Block C Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Mulkey Brothers vs. The Russian Team

There’s always that fanbase ready for Mulkey-Mania to explode and see the albino-jobbers run wild...well, it wasn’t starting tonight as Ivan and Petrov ragdolled the pale brothers and punched their ticket to the next round.

Winners: The Russian Team

Grade: (C-)

Block D Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. The Grapplers (Grappler I & II)

Both teams were newcomers to the Superstaion TBS. On one side, you had the athletic, bow-tie wearing, fun loving babyface Fantastics. The other were old-school, identically masked Grapplers, simply identified I and II. The two teams were pretty evenly matched and it soon became apparent that The Grapplers were not a masked jobber team (something that any fan of the Portland territory already knew), but something a bit more. The masked duo threw everything they had at Fulton and Rogers, but ultimately weren’t able to keep the good-looking babyfaces down. Fulton was able to cover Grappler II following a spiked piledriver ending the competitive contest.

Winners: The Fantastics

Grade: (D+)

Interview

Missy Hyatt welcomed The Horsemen, still without Blanchard, to the interview stage. Flair began by first commenting on how attractive Missy looked before fielding a question about Jimmy Snuka’s comments last week. Flair laughed off Snuka’s desire for a title match and said guys like him don’t get title shots.

JJ Dillon took up the thread there and said that his lawyers were preparing a list of potential candidates to be named number one contender that he would submit to the NWA, and Ric Flair’s next challenger was a matter that the Horsemen took very seriously.

Dillon then changed the subject to the Television title. He once again asserted that it was a travesty of justice that Tully was stripped of the title. Arn agreed and said that’s why he was planning to make sure the title went home with him next week, no matter who won tonight.

Dillon finished off by saying Lex Luger was the insurance policy for that claim, because Luger was going to be the last man left standing.

Grade: (B)

10 Man Over the top rope Battle Royal to establish contender to Television Championship:

Brad Armstrong, Dusty Rhodes, Lex Luger, Manny Fernandez, Rick Rude, Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Ron Simmons, The Warlord, & Wahoo McDaniel

This battle royal ran almost 20 minutes, with the action slowly spread out. One thread that was woven in and out of the match was that of the Rock & Roll Express squaring off with Rude and Fernandez. The two teams traded shots with one another, each occasionally being saved by their partner.

Another thread was that of poor Brad Armstrong who seemingly found himself perpetually always on the brink of elimination. The wily youth kept manipulating his body to wrap himself up in the ropes to stave off elimination.

The big Warlord became the first elimination, succumbing to the combined forces of Rhodes and McDaniel. The next was Manny Fernandez who was knocked over and out from a big double dropkick by Ricky & Robert. Rude capitalized by sending Gibson out soon after.

Left standing were Luger, Simmons, Armstrong, Rhodes, McDaniel, Morton and Rude. Big Ron Simmons was the next out as he charged at Brad Armstrong. Armstrong saw him coming and hit the mat, pulling down the top rope and letting Simmons own momentum carry him over and out! Simmons was furious and, against the warnings of referees, rolled back into the ring and cracked Armstrong with a chair across the back before finally being escorted out by officials!

Armstrong lay curled in the corner selling the brutal assault as the action raged on. Rude and Morton were tied up and were dumped by Dusty Rhodes as Luger dumped Wahoo!

Dusty and Luger were left as Armstrong lay prone in the corner. The Dream and the Package traded big blows in the center with neither getting a clear advantage. Eventually, Luger has Dusty teetering as Luger fought to stay alive. Unbeknownst to either man, young Brad Armstrong had come to and sneaked up behind both, hoisting Dusty's leg toppling Luger first with Rhodes hitting the floor a second after! It was a shocking upset as Brad Armstrong was the last man left and is now scheduled to face Arn Anderson for the Television title next week!

Winner: Brad Armstrong

Grade: ©

Post Match

Luger and Dusty continued to brawl on the floor as Armstrong collopsed in the middle of the ring, still selling the chair shot. Soon Arn, Flair and JJ joined the fight against Rhodes on the floor. The sides were quickly evened up as Nikita and Ole were quick to run in on Dusty’s behalf. Mayhem consumed the ringside area as backstage officials flooded out to clear the commotion as the program went to commercial break.

Grade: (B+)

“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka vs. Big Bubba Rogers w/ Jim Cornette

By the time the program resumed, order had been restored and it was time for the main event. With Cornette barking orders on the outside, Rogers took advantage on the man from the Fiji Islands. Big Bubba dished out all kinds of punishment, using his weight and size to his advantage.

Snuka felt the love from the crowd however and battled back, even slamming the big man before finishing him off with a Superfly Splash.

The program closed with Snuka posing with his signature "I love you" pose on one knee in the center of the ring.

Winner: Jimmy Snuka

Grade: (C+)

Show Rating: C+ (popularity up in 9 regions)

TV Rating: 1.62

Brad Armstrong - Arn could be going for the US title in the future, while Brad can be a nice little midcard champ.

Valiant/Tron - I went back and forth on this one, because I could see the Soul Patrol sliding into the slot as their opponents. But at the same time, I can't see Terminator and Khan getting into the second round either. So I gotta go with the Boogie Woogie Man.

The MX - Won't be surprised if they don't win the whole thing. That's how I always booked this anyways if I ran a TGA game.

Wahoo and Douglas - This can be a really nice mentor and protege team for a little bit to build Shane up.

Spoiler and Warlord - A big heel team to face the hot young Fantastics.

Windhams and Garvins - They may show some dissension, but they pick up a win over this cobbled together heel team.

babyface brother team takes the win here, but I see a Barry Whindham heel turn soon

Even though this can go either way for me, even if you are building Petrov up as a big heel russian monster, I see Graham getting a win with a quick roll up and Petrov destroying him after the match

World Championship Wrestling

April Week 3 1987

Official Prediction Card

*Faces always listed first

NWA Television Title: Brad Armstrong vs. Arn Anderson w/ JJ Dillon

-this one could go either way. I say Ole costs Arn here.

Block A Crockett Cup Qualifier: Jimmy Valiant & Lazer Tron vs. Teijo Kahn & The Terminator

Block B Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Oates Brothers vs. The Midnight Express

Block C Crockett Cup Qualifier: Wahoo McDaniel & Shane Douglas vs. Jos LeDuc & Brian Adams

-I love the love for some old school NWA stalwarts like Wahoo and LeDuc in this diary.

Block D Crockett Cup Qualifier: The Top Guns (Derrick Duke & Ricky Rice) vs. The Spoiler & The Warlord

8 Man Tag: Barry & Kendall Windham, Ron & Jimmy Garvin vs. Black Bart, Bobby Jaggers & The Sheepherders

-not sure if the Barry turn happens here or not, but at the very least the fire should be fed

Mike Graham vs. Vladimir Petrov

Bonus Point: Name one of the 3 wrestlers that JJ Dillon will present as potential challengers to be named number 1 contender for Ric Flair’s World Championship?

-everyone seems to be predicting Dusty or another main eventer, but I'm going in a different direction. Seeing that this is JJ's list, not the official contender, I'm going to say he's picking a jobber or someone like that. How about Thunderfoot II? :D I could be way off base with this line of thinking...

I do enjoy the abbreviated results as I am sure they're so much easier for you to write and they make for a quick read to get caught up. Looking forward to seeing who advances in the Crockett Cup. Keep up the good work!
