World Championship Wrestling

Date: Week 1 May 1987

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & David Crockett

Venue: Generic Venue (North West)

Attendance: 3,300

6 Man Tag: Jimmy Valiant & The Rock n' Roll Express vs. Dick Murdoch, Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez w/ Paul Jones

The program opened this week with an exciting 6-man tag match with a lot of inter-personal issues on the line. The bout was evenly matched and the two teams had a pretty even, exciting exchange for just over 12 minutes. The bout completely broke down when all 6 men found their way in the ring brawling and Paul Jones jumped on the apron, cane in hand. He swiped at Ricky Morton who went down and Long promptly called for the bell signaling the disqualification.

Winners: Jimmy Valiant & The Rock n’ Roll Express

Grade: ©

Pre-Tape Interview

The next segment was a pre-recorded interview featuring Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff who were together at Rhodes’ home. The two Super Powers put over their injuries from last week’s heinous attack by the Sheepherders and promised a reckoning next week when the two teams met in their scheduled Crockett Cup bout.

Grade: (B-)

Block C Crockett Cup 2nd Round: Wahoo McDaniel & Shane Douglas vs. The Russian Team

Round 2 Crockett Cup action was up next. Wahoo and Douglas started out hot but quickly cooled against the power of the big Petrov. The two bruising Russians were able to isolate and pound on Shane Douglas who sold well before Ivan finally pinned him just after 6 minutes.

Winners: The Russian Team

Grade: (C-)

Post Match Interview

Following the bout Missy Hyatt welcomed the freshly advanced Russian Team. Ivan took the opportunity to call Nikita and Rhodes soft and laughed at their attack at the hands of the Sheepherders the previous week. Koloff said Nikita never would have found himself in that position under his tutelage.

Grade: (B-)

Interview

After a quick commercial break, Tony Schiavone and his luxurious lady tickler welcomed Jim Cornette, Big Bubba Rogers and The Midnight Express to the interview stage. The newly minted United States Tag Team Champions were only too happy to gloat over their title win last week and promised that Rock n’ Roll Express are in for next week! Mrs. Cornette is expecting her baby-boy to bring home 1 million dollars!

Grade: (C-)

Block D Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Fantastics vs. The Spoiler & The Warlord

The program was back again to Cup action here. The big Warlord and veteran Spoiler got the early jump on the young upstarting Fantastics. Fulton and Rogers displayed a never say die attitude and impressive athleticism and quickness and battled back for the win.

Winners: The Fantastics

Grade: (D+)

Interview

Missy Hyatt welcomed the NWA Heavyweight Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair out next. Flair was dressed to the nines, yet came solo for the interview for a change. After complimenting how well Missy looked, Flair began to discuss his upcoming opponent, Jimmy Snuka. Flair produced a bucket and began taking out soap, flea and tick powder, and deodorant. He said he absolutely would not get into the ring with Snuka until he agreed to liberally use these things...

Grade: (B+)

Ambush

..As Flair was continuing on about Snuka’s hygiene, “The Superfly” clearly had had enough and zoomed from out the back and tackling Flair who went down like a tower of blocks! Snuka began laying into the champ but was was quickly overwhelmed by the arrival of Luger, Anderson and JJ Dillon of the Horsemen! As Flair sold the attack on the floor, Arn and Luger laid into the “Fiji Phenom” as JJ Dillon barked that Snuka should’ve stayed in his mud-hut where he belongs.

Grade: (B+)

Rocky King vs. Ron Simmons

Simmons squashed the local rag-to-riches story Rocky King in just over 5 minutes.

Winner: Ron Simmons

Grade: (D+)

Post Match:

Simmons, whose mean streak has seemingly only widened with each passing week, began delivering a post-match assault on the helpless King for no other reason than being a bully. Simmons attack didn’t last long however as Brad Armstrong shot out from the back and chased the menacing form of Simmons off.

Grade: (D)

Block A Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Road Warriors w/ Paul Ellering vs. Black Bart & Bobby Jaggers

After talking tough last week, Black Bart and Bobby Jaggers made every attempt to put their money where their mouth is and bring it to the Roadies here. The two teams had a smash-mouth bout, trading physicality. Not very many teams do well when going at the Road Warriors like that however, and after 8 minutes of slugging it out, Hawk damn near decapitated “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers with the Doomsday Device for the pinfall.

Winners: The Road Warriors

Grade: (B-)

Interview

Follow the match, Tony welcomed Ellering and The Warriors to the stage. Ellering said that history was on the verge of repeating itself and Hawk and Animal were coming to claim the Cup and the cash prize for the second year in a row. Hawk went on to say that it would be devastation, destruction and desolation for any team who crossed their path in this tournament. It didn’t matter if it was the Horsemen, Super Powers, or anyone else--they would do what they do best: annihilate the competition!

Grade: (B)

Block B Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Garvins vs. Lex Luger & Arn Anderson w/ JJ Dillon

The main event was a competitive one once again featuring tournament action. With the Precious situation still a recent memory, The Garvins were fired up to get their hands on the Horsemen here. It was a seesaw bout, with the Garvin wearing down Arn in the early going. A little bit of tomfoolery on the outside from JJ Dillon, and suddenly Arn was able to tag in the Luger and the Horsemen had Jimmy Garvin isolated. “Gorgeous” Jimmy put his heart on the line however, and with the crowd on his side, battled back from underneath, and just as he made the hot tag to to Ron, referee Tommy Young was once again tied up with JJ Dillon! Young missed the tag and sent Ron back to the corner as Luger and Anderson piled on Jimmy.

This brought Barry Windham out from the back to the crowd’s delight. Windham stalked JJ around the outside and made it clear he wouldn’t be allowing Dillon’s continued interference. Eventually Jimmy made that hot tag to big brother Ron and “Hands of Stone” came in like a house of fire, Luger and Anderson both fed him and quickly The Garvins were in control with everything going their way. With Luger and Ron the legal men, Jimmy began brawling with Arn on the floor. Ron kicked in Luger in the gut and came off the ropes in what was most likely going to be a sunset flip…

...however Ron never hit that flip because as he hit the ropes, Windham swung a chair wildly across Ron’s back with a loud smack that echoed through the arena! Tommy Young was once more tied up with Dillon and missed the betrayal and Garvin crumpled to the mat. Luger meekly fell atop him for Young’s 3 count.

The Horsemen, knowing they’d stole one here, were quick the flea to the back. The program closed with Jimmy and Precious checking on Ron as Garvin writhed in pain. Windham, chair still in hand, coldly watched.

Winners: Anderson & Luger

Grade (C+)

Show Grade: B- (Popularity up in 9 regions)

TV Ratings: 1.90

I thought that was a great episode dude! I think the Barry turn went down perfectly. Also, nice to see you heat up the Snuka/Flair match with that angle. Felt super authentic to me.

Thanks Rider! It was a fun show to write! Hopefully the Cup goes down as I foresee it!

Have you considered adding NWA Pro Wrestling and/or NWA World Wide Wrestling? I always was kind of confused about this with the Golden Age Mod. I would say NWA World Wide Wrestling and NWA World Championship Wrestling were the A show for syndication and cable respectively, with NWA Pro Wrestling being the B show.

Watching NWA WWW and Pro it always seemed like it was more hyped with being in front of a live audience whereas NWA WCW had more squashes but did have some relevant angles.

<p>Good job with the turn, too bad it's too early for Lex to get booted and Barry to take his place as a Horseman!</p><p> </p><p>

Sullivan and Barbarian - <em>Heel team makes it further, but the Warriors are gonna eat them for lunch.</em></p><p>

RNR Express - <em>I think they'll win, but I also think this is the match that won't happen.</em></p><p><em>

So they win if the match happens.</em></p><p>

Super Powers - <em>It took me years to realize that JCP had the Super Powers and then the next year, the WWF made the "Mega Powers". I don't know if it's necessarily a dig,</em></p><p><em>

but with how childish Vince was in the 80s, it almost has to be.</em></p><p>

Rude and Manny - <em>Brad isn't getting THAT big of a push at the moment.</em></p><p>

Lex Luger - <em>The only reason Ole would win this is if you were planning to give him a title shot soon. Which, I've done before, and Flair vs. Ole gave a really good rating. Food for thought for ya.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Bonus: Express vs. Express, which will give Arn and Luger a bye into the semifinals, just like all good 80s tournaments should.</p>

So, I'm pretty happy with 1 "A" show. That said, I did bump WCW to 2 hours, which is longer than I think the actual show was. World Championship Wrestling

Date: Week 2 May 1987

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & David Crockett

Venue: Richmond Robins Center (VA)

Attendance: 10,00

Block A Crockett Cup 2nd Round: Jimmy Valiant & Lazer Tron vs. Kevin Sullivan & The Barbarian

In tonight's opening contest, Jimmy Valiant and Lazer Tron tried their hardest to be the Cinderella story of this year’s cup but unfortunately the brick wall that was Kevin Sullivan and The Barbarian could not be overcome. After 8 minutes of back and forth action, Sullivan was able to deliver a devastating piledriver to Lazer Tron securing the win and the right to face The Road Warriors in the next round.

Winners: Kevin Sullivan & The Barbarian

Grade: (C-)

Interview

Following the bout, Schiavone and his crumb catcher welcomed Sullivan & Barbi to the interview podium. Through his thick Boston accent, Sullivan said that he had taken the Barbarian under his wing as his pupil. Together, they had climbed the 77 stairs of the 7 towers, consulted with Abbuda Dein in Singapore, and knew the secret to vanquishing the Road Warriors. He promised that the Crockett Cup is only the beginning…

Grade: (C+)

Backstage

As the interview was coming to a close, Schiavone received word that there was an incident occurring backstage. While he didn’t have the details, he understood that Missy Hyatt and a camera crew had just arrived at the scene.

The program cut away to the locker room area where Brad Armstrong was rolling on the ground clutching at his knee. Ron Simmons was being pulled away by multiple other wrestlers. Tim Horner was by Armstrong’s side and Missy attempted to get a word with him. Horner simply waved her off as Missy drew the conclusion that Simmons had obviously attacked Brad Armstrong and did not know what ramification the apparent knee injury would have on the upcoming Crockett Cup bout between The Lightning Express and the Awesome Twosome scheduled for later tonight.

Grade: (C+)

"Soul Man" Rocky Johnson vs. Big Bubba Rogers w/ Jim Cornette

David Crockett and Tony Schiavone had a hard time concentrating on this one, as they were outraged that Simmons would attack Armstrong in such a manner. For the in-ring action, it was a back and forth affair between Johnson and Rogers, with Johnson fighting from underneath for the majority. Cornette took every opportunity to ham it up to the camera and note that this was only the first of 2 big victories for his boys tonight. Johnson came back for a big flurry and seemed to have Big Bubba reeling. “The Soulman” came off the ropes for clothesline but Rogers caught him and planted him hard with a Bubba slam good for a 3 count.

Winner: Big Bubba Rogers

Grade: ©

Interview

Tony and his lip toupee were back out again to welcome number one contender, “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka to a positive crowd response. Schiavone asked Sunka about the disparaging remarks that Ric Flair made about him last week as well as the ambush by the Four Horsemen. Snuka responded that he’s heard other wrestlers comments his whole career and it’s only given him extra motivation. He said if Flair expected to see a savage across the ring from him on Sunday night, then a savage is what he’d get….brodda!

Grade: (B-)

Block C Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Super Powers vs. The Sheepherders

Following the assault on Rhodes and Koloff two weeks ago, this one was about more than simply advancing in the Crockett Cup. It was a wild brawl, with referee Tommy Young desperately trying to contain the action as the two teams fought in the ring and the floor, tossing one another in the ringside barricades and the ring post. As wild and violent as The Sheepherders have been known to get, Rhodes and Koloff were willing to equally down and dirty here and, with the fans loudly in their corner, were able to pull it out against the New Zealand maniacs.

Winners: The Super Powers

Grade: (B-)

Interview

Missy Hyatt welcomed The Super Powers to the interview area following the wild match. Both Dusty and Nikita were still steaming following the bout and made it clear that this was only another step on a long journey. They didn’t care who it was who was up next: The Russians, The Horsemen, The Road Warriors--they would walk through hell and back to bring home the Cup and raise it high. They had a special purpose, a higher purpose, and it'd all be revealed when the Super Powers unleashed their Super Weapon tomorrow night.

Grade: (B+)

Block B Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Rock n' Roll Express vs. The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette & Big Bubba Rogers

This episode of WCW was loaded, with this match perhaps being the cherry on the top of the sundae. Both these teams pulled out all the stops, putting on an impeccable display of tag team wrestling. After 10 minutes of action, the bout was a stalemate, both teams still trying to gain an upperhand. When Cornette and Bubba tried to get involved, Earl Hebnar sent them to the back evening things up. After 15 minutes, Morton was fighting for his life as the Midnight’s worked him over, but Morton wouldn’t quit. After 20 minutes. Robert Gibson was flying around the ring like a house afire to but only to be cut off by a stiff superkick by Stan Lane. David Crockett said that the 25 minute time limit might become an issue for the first time in this tournament unless someone broke this match open. Unfortunately, David Crockett’s word were prophetic however, as the 25 minute time limit was reached and the match was ruled a draw, granting the Horsemen team of Luger and Anderson a bye in the next round.

Winner: Time Limit Draw

Grade: (B-)

Update

The next segment was a short one featuring David Crockett and Tony Schiavone. The duo put over the great effort of both teams in the last match, as well as hyping up the effort and competitive fire seen in the entire Crockett Cup tournament and put over tomorrow night's event. Next they segued into one team not advancing: The Garvin brothers and discussed the Barry Windham betrayal from last week. They promised that we would hear from Windham on next week’s program.

Grade: ©

Block D Crockett Cup 2nd Round: The Lightning Express vs. Rude & Fernandez w/ Paul Jones

The last bout of Cup action never actually took place this evening. Paul Jones and the Awesome Twosome called out Armstrong and Horner for the bout. Armstrong, leaning heavily on Horner, limped down the ring and wanted to make a go of it. Referee Teddy Long wouldn’t have it however and ruled Armstrong in no condition to compete. The match had to be forfeited with Rude and Fernandez advancing on to face the Fantastics tomorrow night.

Winner: The Awesome Twosome via Forfeit

Grade: ©

Ole Anderson vs. Lex Luger w/ JJ Dillon

With some excellent tournament action happening already in the program, the main event had a lot to live up to. Luger and Ole tried their best however, with Ole applying his old-school mat wrestling against his younger, stronger Horsemen replacement. Luger was more than a handful for Anderson however and Luger came back with an athletic display that included a flying forearm and a stalling vertical suplex. Luger’s inexperience showed however when made a big mistake by not pinning the older Anderson cousin. His nonchalant attitude cost him as tough old Ole battled back and wore Luger down with a spinning toehold that seemingly had Luger trapped in the center of the ring. JJ, seeing Luger left with no options other than tapping out, opted for the DQ by jumping into the ring and clubbing Ole from behind!

Winner: Ole Anderson via DQ

Grade: (C+)

Post Match

Ole quickly wheeled around on Dillon and grabbed him by the lapel, backing him into the corner, evil intent in his eyes. Arn Anderson and Ric Flair quickly hit the ring however and lay into their former Horsemen brother…

...until the cavalry, in the form of Jimmy Snuka, Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff arrived! A full on donnybrook took over as the program ran out of time and David Crockett shouted to join us at the Crockett Cup!
