I don't normally do this, but I am about 80% done with The Crockett Cup and I'm excited about that. If I continue on like a maniac tonight, than it'll post within an hour or two. If I peter out, than it'll most likely be up tomorrow sometime. Long story short, last call on predictions. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

The 1987 Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup

Date: Week 2 May 1987

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & Bob Caudle

Venue: Rupp Arena (KY)

Attendance: 23,015

Opening

This sweet NWA video cassette commercial music that Beejus found for me played as a special video package highlighting the stars of the NWA is shown alongside some old school computer-generated graphics hyping up the Crockett Cup event.

Grade: (B)

After the cameras fly over the sold out Rupp Arena, we come to everyone’s favorite weatherman Bob Caudle, Tony Schiavone and his mouth mop and lastly, the curvaceous Missy Hyatt. The announce team greeted the fans and discussed tonight’s action.

Grade: (C+)

The talking heads didn’t have too long however, as

and the arrival of the Road Warriors damn near blew the roof. Sullivan and The Barbarian were already in the ring and looked as confident as anyone could be against Hawk and Animal.

It didn’t take long for a hoss fight to break out as both teams spared no physicality trading stiff haymakers. Referee Teddy Long did all he could to maintain the order in the wild brawl, but he had a tall task as both teams willingly fought on the floor and liberally pushed the 5 count for double teaming.

Both teams hardly sold each other’s offense and Sullivan and the Barbarian were positioned as an equal match for the Roadies. Eventually, after 12 minutes of clubbing action, as Animal and Sullivan slugged it out on the floor, Hawk was able to come off the top rope to clothesline The Barbarian for a pinfall and advancing on to face Arn Anderson and Lex Luger.

Winners: The Road Warriors

Grade: (B-)

Post Match:

As Hawk was having his hand raised, Sullivan rammed Animal’s head into the crowd barricade and the big man went down. Barbarian had popped back up in the ring and was moving to go back at Hawk who had no problem continuing the fight. Sullivan rolled into the ring behind Hawk and as the Road Warrior turned around, Sullivan suddenly had made a giant fireball appear in Hawk’s face! The big man hit the mat, his hands covering his face and his legs kicking frantically. Ellering and Animal jumped into the ring as Sullivan and the Barbarian escaped back to the dressing room.

Grade: (A)

Caudle and Schiavone barely had a moment to digest what had happened before the event was back with more tournament action. The problems between Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff and the The Russian team have been well documented over the last 6 months and the two teams were itching for an opportunity to mix it up again. Dusty and Ivan opened the contest, teasing the inevitable Petrov/Nikita showdown. Eventually both men were tagged in, and after a stare down, the two exchanged a test of strength spot. Petrov put Nikita on his knees, but “The Russian Nightmare” powered back and had Petrov down to the mat when Ivan cheap shotted him, breaking the sequence.

The match continued with Petrov and Ivan eventually getting heat on Dusty and his weird belly stain. Dusty eventually got the crowd on side and he made the big hot tag to Nikita. Nikita cleaned house at the point eventually employing the devastating Russian Sickle to Ivan for the pin.

Winners: The Super Powers

Grade: (B)

After the two brawling, heavyweight style matchups that opened the show, The Fantastics vs. the Awesome Twosome was a nice change of pace. The teams wrestled a quick, more technical style.

The announcers noted that Paul Jones and the World Tag Team Champions may have overlooked Rogers and Fulton here, and it really did seem as if the Fantastics were just one step ahead the whole match. Of course Paul Jones was always the difference maker in these types of matches. He successfully created distraction for Tommy Rogers, allowing Manny Fernandez to secure a quick roll up from behind to steal the win.

Winners: Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez

Grade: (C-)

It’s the rematch you didn’t know you wanted (and I imagine you're scrolling down to make sure that Murdoch comes out on top). Valiant and Murdoch worked some dopey comedy spots in early here as both men like to ham it up. Eventually Murdoch locked in a nice little rest hold as Boogie slapped the mat getting the fans to chant for him. With the people on his side, Valiant fired up and delivered a series swift jabs. With Murdoch reeling, he sent the champ into the ropes and dropped his head for a back body drop. Murdoch capitalized on that mistake however, and stopped short on the rebound and grabbed Valiant for a Brainbuster in the center of the ring and a decisive fall pinfall in 13 minutes.

Winner: Dick Murdoch

Grade: (C+)

Semi-Finals: The Road Warriors w/ Paul Ellering vs. Arn Anderson & Lex Luger w/ JJ Dillon

The Horsemen were in the ring when

played for the second time this evening. Missy revealed to Caudle and Schiavone that Hawk refused medical attention following the attack from Kevin Sullivan and the bandages the crowd was seeing covering his left eye and face were actually applied by Paul Ellering in the back.

Animal started the bout against Arn, clearly trying to protect Hawk here. Anderson, despite being significantly fresher for this bout, knew not to match power with Animal and tried to wrestle him to the mat, shooting on his legs. Animal rebuffed The Enforcer the first few attempts, but Arn’s persistence paid off and he grounded the powerhouse before tagging in Luger to continue the damage. Luger and Anderson exchanged frequent tags here, employing the time-tested Anderson Family tag team match formula or breaking down a body part.

Animal clearly needed to tag Hawk into the bout and eventually succeeded after countering Arn’s attempted vertical suplex with a suplex of his own. Animal made the tag he desperately needed, and despite his compromised vision, Hawk lit Arn and Luger up with a series of clotheslines.

It wasn’t to last however, as eventually Luger was able to blindside Hawk on his bad side. Luger and Anderson went back to applying the same formula of isolating a man and working on a body part--only this time it was Hawk’s eye sustaining the damage. The fresh burn quickly busted open and blood began covering Hawk’s face. Despite the wound, Hawk refused to die, kicking out on 2, and fighting back as wildly and desperate as he could. The eye only worsened however, and eventually Tommy Young made the executive decision to stop the bout.

The Horsemen team were going to the finals of the Crockett Cup and the chance at a million dollars and in all likelihood Hawk was heading to a medical facility.

Winners: Luger & Anderson

Grade: (B-)

Rude and Fernandez, aided by Paul Jones, did a great job getting heat by playing chickenshit to perfection here. They did a lot of gaga, stalling the match and playing off of Dusty’s natural charisma and Koloff’s menacing size. Eventually the pace quickened and the two teams ended up putting in 20 hard minutes with both teams shining at different times. Dusty went on a hot streak at the end, giving Rude and Paul Jones both the Atomic Elbows as Nikita decapitated Manny Fernandez with the Russian Sickle and the Super Powers punched their ticket to the finals and a date with The Horsemen.

Winners: The Super Powers

Grade: (B-)

Special 10-Man Elimination Tag Match: The Rock & Roll Express, The Garvins & Wahoo McDaniel w/ Precious vs. The Midnight Express, Big Bubba Rogers, Ron Simmons & Barry Windham w/ Jim Cornette

Obviously the matchup that everyone badly wanted to see here was one of the Garvin brothers tying it up with Barry Windham, however the early goings only teased the encounter as the Rock & Roll Express and the Midnight Express carried the early portion of the bout. More and more guys began getting involved however, and the first elimination occurred when Wahoo McDaniel was able to duck underneath a big clothesline from Ron Simmons and catch him with a big high-cross body that showed surprising athleticism for his age and size. The bodyblock was good for the pin and elimination of Simmons, but unfortunately Wahoo soon followed him when Big Bubba stepped in and planted the beloved veteran with as Big Bubba Slam for the pin.

Things muddied along from there for a bit until Barry Windham locked up with Jimmy Garvin. Jimmy came at Windham hot, but Barry played it ice cold and took a powder, forcing referee Earl Hebner to back Garvin down. Windham’s cool-headed strategy worked and he soon had Jimmy wrestled to the mat in a tight headlock that Schiavone suggested was low on the throat. From there, Windham tagged in Stan Lane but antagonized Ron before going back to his corner. Ron stormed into the ring, drawing referee Teddy Long allowing Lane and Eaton to apply the veg o'matic that had proven to be so effective over the last few weeks. With that, Jimmy Garvin was eliminated.

It was Ron, Ricky and Robert outgunned against Lane, Eaton, Windham and Big Bubba from here. Ron jumped into the ring following his brother’s exit desperately seeking to lock horns with Windham, but the Midnight Express tried their best to hold him at bay. “Hands of Stone” was not easily held off however and soon Bobby Eaton found himself on the wrong end of wicked jab that dropped poor Eaton like a sack of potatoes eliminating him from the contest. Windham blindsided Ron becoming the legal man here but Ron no sold the offense from the big Texan. Garvin began lighting Windham up with wicked chops and the two soon found themselves battling on the floor. Ron, his anger still seething picked up a chair as a measure of vengeance and cracked Windham across the back! Barry withered ringside and Teddy Long had no choice to send Garvin to the back with a blatant DQ.

From there Windham had the wherewithal to get back into the ring and tag Stan Lane in. Lane and Gibson exchanged some technical wrestling next with Gibson scored a sunset flip 3 count on Lane. Eerily similar the Wahoo elimination earlier in the bout however, Gibson turned into a Big Bubba Rogers and a giant slam leaving only Ricky Morton left against Rogers and Windham. Ricky fought valiantly against Big Bubba and just as if it seemed he was going to knock the big man down, Bubba was able to tag in Windham, who despite still selling the chair shot, was still able to handle Morton eventually pinning him following a superplex ending the whole ordeal after almost 23 minutes

Survivors: Barry Windham & Big Bubba Rogers

Grade: (B-)

Special Announcement

Next, Dusty and Nikita made their third trip to through the curtain tonight. Dusty grabbed the house mic and said it was time to reveal their secret weapon. With that he signaled to the entrance curtain. For the first few moments, nothing happened...

...until Magnum TA, arm in a sling and heavily leaning on a cane, slowing made his way down to the ring. The arena went berserk, as all the fans in attendance knew that TA was lucky to even be alive following his hellacious car wreck in the fall. Magnum was slow at first, but as the fans cheered and adrenaline filled his body, his pace quickened and he stood a little straighter. It was an uplifting moment to see Magnum back on his feet and in the corner of Nikita and Dusty.

For the Crockett Cup & $1,000,000: The Super Powers w/ Magnum TA vs. Arn Anderson & Lex Luger w/ JJ Dillon

Yes, the Horsemen team was a great deal fresher than the Super Powers, having wrestled only once on the night to Rhodes & Koloff’s twice, but with the emotional return of Magnum TA, the Super Powers were on fire here. The two teams worked hard to keep things exciting and the match featured a lot of quick bumps with both teams using mad dashes to break up potential pinfalls. The finish came when mayhem broke out and all four men were brawling in the ring. Dusty had mounted the turnbuckle and was giving Arn Anderson more than he could handle while Luger and Nikita ran the ropes ending the sequence with a sickening Russian Sickle across Luger’s collar bone!

Sensing the end was near, JJ jumped on the apron to distract referee Earl Hebner, but Magnum yanked the manager off. Dillon began jabbing Magnum in the chest with his finger to which Magun responded by clubbing Dillon with his cane to a tremendous pop! Back in the ring, Koloff mounted Luger for the pin while simultaneously Dusty was covered Anderson and Hebnar counted 1, 2, 3!

Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff had done it! They had won the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup and the million dollar cash prize!

Winners: The Super Powers

Grade: (B)

Trophy Presentation

David and Jim Crockett were on hand to present the trophy and the $1,000,000 check to Rhodes and Koloff, but make no mistake. This moment was all about the return of Magnum TA who was warmly hugged by both Crockett brothers, Dusty and Nikita.

Grade: (B)

Prematch Entrances

It was time for the main event, and both Snuka and Flair made their way to the ring. Gary Michael Cappetta was on hand to run through the introductions, wrestler’s weights as well as to inform that the match would be subject to a 30 minute TV time limit.

Grade: (A*)

Flair began the match trying to feel out Snuka, testing him with a lockup. Snuka quickly demonstrated his superior strength to the champion and Flair was forced to take a powder on the outside to keep the match at his pace.

When Flair reentered the ring, he jabbed Snuka with thumb to the eye, and “the dirtiest player in the game” quickly showed Snuka why he deserved that moniker. Flair took Snuka over with a snapmare and tried to hold the Fiji Phenom on the mat with a rear chinlock but Snuka was too strong. Snuka came at Flair with chops and a series of jumping headbutts that had Flair flopping all over the ring. Flair ran through all his usual spots, flipping up and over the turnbuckle, walking a few steps before falling flat on his face, etc. but the champ was able to escape a handful of pin attempts made by the Superfly.

When Capetta reminded us that 15 minutes remained in the contest, Snuka set Flair up in the corner and looked for a running splash, but The NAture Boy narrowly escaped as The Superfly crashed into the turnbuckle and the top of the ringpost! Flair pounced on Snuka from there trying for the pin, but Snuka kicked out. Flair stayed on the Snuka, taking him over with a gutwrench suplex followed by a diving kneedrop. With 10 minutes remaining, Flair went for his first Figure 4 attempt only to be countered into a small package for a 2 count. Flair wrestled Snuka into the corner and began lighting his chest with thunderous chops. Snuka’s eyes lit up as if the chops only incensed him. Snuka roared and burst out of the corner delivering his own series of hard hitting chops. Snuka hit a dropkick and Flair went down. Snuka’s was amped and the Rupp Arena felt that we may be witnessing the crowning of a new champion. Snuka scooped Flair up and planted him in perfect position. The crowd buzzed as Snuka made his way up the turnbuckle. The Superfly raised his arms, fingers gesturing he loved his fans, and lept for a magnificent splash…

...that Flair just narrowly rolled out of the way of! Snuka bellyflopped hard on the mat. Flair dove on Superfly, and unbeknownst to Tommy Young, positioned his feet on the middle ropes for just that little bit of extra leverage. Young’s hand counted 1, 2, and 3 just as Snuka kicked out a half a moment too late.

Winner: Ric Flair

Grade: (B)

Post Match:

Young raised Flair’s arm signaling him winner and still champion. Snuka was incensed and climbed back to his feet. He turned the champion around and delivered a series of big time chops and right hands. Snuka sent Flair into the ropes and dropped him with a high backbody drop. He climbed the ropes for a second time and this time nailed the devastating Superfly Splash for a small measure of revenge.

Tonight was not Snuka's night but the message as obvious: he expected a rematch.

Final Crockett Cup Prediction Series Standings:

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/Predictions/Prediction%20April%201987/CCPSeries007_zpsvw1ynavn.png

Congratulations to Beejus for taking home the Crockett Cup Series Prediction Contest! Honorable mentions to to4sty and Uncrewed for making it a super tight race. All 3 of you should expect something in your PMs over the weekend regarding prizes for participating. I encourage everyone to double check my counting, as I could see it as an entirely possible scenario that I goofed up counting and someone could be unintentionally short changed.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in a prediction game, read, or provided feedback on this project thus far. This is longest running diary game that I've ever done (which I know isn't saying much) and I feel like it's getting more fun and interesting for me with each show I post. The reader feedback and participation has brought me a whole new appreciation of the game. So, thanks for that. Along those lines, I am flabbergasted about many different aspects of this diary was nominated for Diary of the Month. First of all, thank you for the recognition and secondly, I can't believe the level of talent that regularly posts on these boards. Pretty cool to see that some of you guys thing this diary should be on equal footing as some of those more talented writers.

Expect my next post to be an Observer post updating everyone on some of the fallout from the Cup as well as some results of some big shows that have recently taken place within the game.

There might be an in-game month taken off from a Prediction contest as I bridge a small gap to the Great American Bash tour, but I will post prediction cards regardless.

Gah! I thought I had predicted on this show! I can't believe I didn't! I was in the running too! ...my own bonehead fault. lol.

Anyways, LOVED the show. My highlight was the Sullivan fireball to Hawk. Good way to get the Road Warriors out of the running while still keeping them strong and sending them off into a clear direction going forward.

I'm glad you're keeping the Snuka/Flair program going. I could see Snuka as a potential champ in this time period--especially in the NWA. He's a perfect fit in the time period...kinda weird he never had a run in JCP around this time. That said, I would have thought that Snuka and Flair would've yielded a higher grade for you than a B (especially on the heels of that Wahoo/Flair match getting an A).

Also, nicely done with the Magnum TA return. It was predictable, but still well done.

I'm wondering where the Super Powers go from here... seems like with Flair tied up with Snuka, Dusty and Nikita both are short on obvious dancing partners at the moment.

<p>Never use Storytelling in the main event. It's basically intended for those matches that nobody cares about where the announcers spend the entirety talking about either a huge angle that just happened and/or the big matches that are coming up. And yeah, Epic and Spectacle have worked for a few people on the board, but I've never once gotten it to work with Peak Flair (87 and 91 mods) vs better and more over wrestlers than Snuka is. I just leave them Regular and watch the A's roll in even without ever using Calm the Crowd beforehand, though I'll throw in something that will get a lower score which accomplishes roughly the same thing before the last two matches.</p><p> </p><p>

I really did enjoy the show, and there are a lot of storylines to branch off of it. I kinda see a Superpowers vs Awesome Twosome feud for the tag titles (still think they've got to lose them before backstage gets too bad) then branching into a Midnights challenge after they dispatch the RnR. Bottom line is you have some interesting options which is always good.</p>

Really? I use story telling pretty often in main events, because what I understood is that it's more about the guys just working a "safe" match so neither of them get hurt. They don't go overboard but do just enough to satisfy the fans. I especially use this in the 2001 diary in main events because a lot of my main event workers need a safe match at their age :p

The Cup was a damn fine show, and while if I were booking it I likely wouldn't have given it to the Powers, it makes total sense to do so. In my past TGA saves (which, the sign of a diary that I'm really enjoying is that it makes me want to play my own personal game of it, and I kinda do here) I usually give it to the Midnights, because Cornette's boys winning the Cup would give him a year's worth of ammunition until the next year. But it's funny how, despite how much JCP and WCW were booked with the heels on top and the faces always chasing the title, faces always won the Crockett Cup and other various tournaments. It amuses me.
