Is there any preference to booking a small venue that will sell out rather than a larger venue that will have vacant spaces? Is it purely financial? or are there any bonuses for performing to a sold out venue?

Supposedly, a sold out venue has the crowd start at a higher level on the 'hot' scale than a venue that is not sold out. However, if you book a certain way (say, starting with good segments in the pre-show and/or to kick off the show), it may not be easily apparent. Depending on your promotion size and financial situation, it might be better to book the bigger venue for the additional fannies in seats rather than the smaller venue that's packed to capacity.
