Author's Note

Hello and thanks for checking out my latest project where I will be taking over WCW in November of 1997. Here's a few details for those who might be interested.

The Data: I am using the Genadi/Mod Squad Montreal Prelude mod which is set in November of 1997 (that means Bret Hart is not on my roster at the start of the game for those of you keeping track at home). The only change prior to launching the new save that I made was taking Turner out of the game and setting up Eric Bischoff as CEO with Kevin Sullivan as booker.

My User Character: My avatar in this game will be Eric Bischoff. That said, the way I imagine this game unfolding will be wildly different than the way Eric would actually run his company. You'll be seeing some vignettes in the early going here that help me "get into the character" so to speak and motivate Bischoff's change in booking philosophy from reality to what I would like to see happen. Hopefully those vignettes are not boring and, best case scenario, they are successful and I incorporate them more. (I am a big fan of both Matt Shannon's Golden Memoirs and James Casey's WCW Dangerous Times diaries-- and I can only hope my narrative skills are half as good as those guys).

What to Expect: For those of you who saw my late JCP diary, I will be using a similar format for posting shows. A Shows will be posted in a more short, to the point format (with a little bit of my own offbeat sense of humor thrown in). PPVs and bigger shows will get the bigger, red carpet treatment with pictures, more detailed match writeups, etc.

Prediction Contests: I will absolutely be running them. They were a great source of enjoyment for me (and hopefully for readers) in Jet Planes & Long Limousines.

Lastly, thanks for stopping by and checking this out. All forms of reader interaction are encouraged. Whether it be predictions, comments, criticism,

questions, or fan signs!

Almost midnight some Monday night sometime in late October of 1997

A hotel lobby bar

It was an odd thing for Eric Bischoff, the one time stiff AWA announcer turned maverick CEO of WCW, to be the only one in the hotel bar following another successful Monday Nitro. He, and many on his roster, were making money hand over fist and dominating Vince McMahon and the WWF in the ratings. Bischoff was as cocksure as ever, sipping a beer and feeling invincible.

Larry Zbyszko soon walked through entrance of the hotel bar and Bischoff called for Larry to join him. The two had gone way back to the failing days of the AWA and had worked closely together under three previous WCW executive regimes. Larry had even offered small bits of advice to Eric during the crafting of the wildly popular nWo storyline, and as it grew into fruition the two were now working a program together on-screen.

They chatted about their recent success and the conversation was easy and light in nature until Larry turned the conversation in such a way that Bischoff didn’t anticipate. Larry curiously asked “So Eric, what’s the big payoff here?”

Bischoff raised his eyebrows. “Put McMahon under.”

Larry shook his head. “I know you’d like to see that happen Eric, but then what? Where’s this nWo stuff taking us? How many more years can you run with Hogan? Savage? Nash? All the rest of ‘em. I’m not asking you about what you want to do McMahon, I’m asking you what you want to do with us. The production staff, the boys, all of it. What’s the payoff?”

Eric flashed his winning smile. “Make money Larry...and lots of it.”

“That’s all well fine and good Eric, but you should know a couple of things. Every promoter that has taken Vince McMahon on has gone out of business. I don’t know how closely you’ve been watching his show, but this Stone Cold thing is hot--almost as hot as the nWo. You need to be looking for the next thing, and the thing after that. You’ve got to think big picture--that’s the only way you’re going to stay on top.”

Eric tapped his finger on his forehead. “I got it all up here Larry...don’t worry bout a thing.”

Larry shook his head nonchalantly. “I’m not worried--but maybe you should be. I’ve been talking with JJ Dillon. He’s been one of Vince’s top guys over the last 5 years and he’s been looking at our books. We’re paying guys so much more than the WWF ever did. There’s a reason McMahon stays afloat no matter how business is--he controls his overhead...I probably shouldn’t even tell you this, but as a friend I think you should know. The boys call you ‘ATM Eric.’ They say you just keep handing out the cash and cutting down the dates in the contracts. Don’t build your future on a house of cards Eric. Plan ahead.” With that Larry finished his drink, bid Bischoff good night and headed up to his hotel room leaving Biscoff with something to wrestle with.

Eric Bischoff’s late night musings with Larry Zbyszko kept him awake most of the night. When he flew into Atlanta the next morning, he immediately scheduled a meeting with JJ Dillon to painstakingly examine his expenditures. Dillon’s knowledge on such matters surprised Eric, and before the meeting was over, Bischoff apologized to JJ for not tapping into his skillset sooner and promised the one time Horsemen manager a more impactful role in the company going forward. Dillon smiled and offered one more piece of advice on his way out the door. “You know Eric, you should know that no promoter before you, including Vince, gave out creative control in a contract before you did for Hogan. I understand why you did it, but you’re on top now. Don’t let the inmates run the asylum.”

Eric nodded truly beginning to understand that maybe things weren’t quite what they seemed around him. “Do you think that Jim? You think the inmates run the asylum?”

JJ sighed and thought for a moment. “I’m not here to rat anyone out so I’ll leave the names out of it but my second week here I saw guys openly doing hard drugs in the locker room. I don’t think I need to explain to you how Meltzer getting a hold of that could easily leak back up to the North Tower. That’s to say nothing of the steroids, booze and pills. Paying guys is the easy part Eric. Getting them to conduct themselves the way they want...that’s a horse of another color.”

“Thanks again Jim.” Eric sighed as JJ left the office.

Once again alone in his office, Eric began looking through the pages of his roster and stopped at the name of Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan had been working as the main booker and television writer for the past few years and, if Eric was honest with himself, he had to admit that he’d done a terrific job. Without Kevin, it’s possible Hogan never would have agreed to the heel change last year. With Sullivan’s name however, also came the name of Chris Benoit. The boys had said Sullivan literally booked his own divorce as he worked a program with Benoit and now, Kevin’s wife Nancy, who also worked for WCW until recently as well, had quietly quit. Benoit and his friends were beginning to claim that Kevin had it out for him, but Eric thought Kevin had been totally professional throughout the whole thing.

It was time to take the book back from Sullivan to alleviate the situation. That would also allow Eric to start getting a firm control on his locker room too. In fact, Eric decided he was going to let both Kevin and Chris go.

OOC: So, this vignette, in addition to establishing my implementation of a drug policy, is mainly to explain why Chris Benoit and Kevin Sullivan will not be featured in this diary. I feel very much the same way when it comes to Benoit. I was a huge fan of his starting right around this time (that best of 7 with Booker T is when I really noticed how good he was). That said, when I watch old stuff on the Network, I get weirded out by seeing him. Maybe Snuka feels different because we weren't really aware of what happened at the time? Additionally, he was acquitted (although personally I remain convinced Snuka was also guilty).

Mark me down as surprised you went so far into the future....not that it's a bad thing, it's certainly easier to run a realistic game without some of the limitations that booking a "real feel" 80s dynasty can bring....only 3 or 4 PPV's a year doesn't fly, and you can't book realistic jobber based TV when your competition has Hogan vs Andre for example on free TV. I'll be locked into this one, I was WCW through and through about this time, In fact I didn't see virtually any WWF from early 96 until around Mania 15. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing how you book Bret Hart....who came into the company white hot off the back of Montreal....so white hot that mismanaging him should have been a virtual impossibility....so, no pressure lol

As for the Benoit situation, I've made my feelings clear on the man before so I won't repeat it.....although for any of the "Benoit for the Hall of Fame" brigade....or even worse the "Benoit was framed" lot....the Lapsed Fan podcast just did a ten hour, three part show that is about as in depth in the situation as you can get....and it's pretty black and white (no pun intended) when you listen to the facts.

I think the only point that makes me get a little odd about Benoit is after Eddie died. From all I've ever read or seen, that was the major turning point of his life. But that is me, and this is your game. In a way, it makes me a little more interested in the roster if you decide to bring the Horsemen together again, given one of the key members isn't there now.

Just read through this and i'm interested to see were it will lead. Kinda disappointed you chose to let Beniot go, maybe under different curcumstances (the alternate history you will rewrite) things might have gone different for him. Maybe YOU could have helped the guy, the game itself may have even mended any tension between him and Sullivan. What im trying to say its historic mods are all about rewriting history and we all know the butterfly effect. I'll be following this for sure though.

Prediction Game: Ok, so first prediction game will run through Starrcade...basically the entire month of November and December in-game. It will incorporate both World War 3 and Starrcade plus the myriad of Nitros and Saturday Night's in between. Fair warning...this is Nitro in 1997, so I am not afraid to use the non-finish and you shouldn't be afraid to predict it.

As a bonus way of showing appreciation of reader participation, I will periodically select a predictor/commenter at random and PM them a little prize as a way of saying thanks for following and interacting. :)

During this prediction contest, I will do my best to wait at least 24 hours from prediction cards before posting shows. If I find a similar groove with this as I did with JCP, than I should be getting a show out every other day or so. That said, this will be a lot more angle heavy than JCP which I find slower to both book and write...so we'll see how it goes.

Without further adieu:

Personally, as someone who has a 1991 diary idea bouncing around my brain, I'm thrilled you went with 97. Good luck with that locker room, and I hope you started with a 7 leadership rating to help with that (I pretty much conceded that you have to run as Hogan or HBK or the backstage runs amok).

Losing Sullivan isn't going to hurt as he should be well on time decline or just backstage at that point, but losing Benoit will hurt due to him being on at least one of the two lists (unless it was super-loaded already which is possible given the massive talent roster they had in the mid-card). I blame all his stuff on CTE as he was never one that beat Nancy or did anything horrible until that night. Being CTE though, there really isn't anything you can do to change it, unlike someone like a Pillman or the numerous others that ruined their lives via drugs where rehab would work. So writing him out of wrestling is the only option.

And just order Tony to regrow his mustache.
