The finish came when Rey Mysterio found himself on the floor and, unbeknownst to the referee, Eddie rammed Mysterio into the post before throwing him back into the ring. Eddie encouraged Chavo to cover him but Chavo didn’t seem sure. Eddie jumped on the apron and gestured wildly for Chavo to cover him but Chavo kept shaking his head. After making some creepy comments about the Nitro girls, he welcomed the Commissioner of WCW, JJ Dillon. Dillon noted that Hollywood Hogan was right, he had won title matches against much of WCW’s top talent. That said, there was still one marquee star that Hogan has never faced: Sting. The problem is that no one can reach Sting and Sting has yet to make his commitment to WCW clear once and for all. Dillon said he had a contract for a World Heavyweight Title bout at Starrcade and he was proposing that Sting come to the World War 3 pay per view and sign a contract with Hollywood Hogan for the main event.</p><p> </p><p> The commentary team blew a gasket over this one, wondering if Sting would show and sign the contract.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: (B-)</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43926" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Diamond Dallas Page vs. John Nord</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> DDP did an admirable job pulling a decent match out the big stiff who used to play the Berzerker. Prediction Game:

Just a general reminder that this contest will run through Starrcade, so time to get in while the game is still young. I'll be throwing out a small prize to one predictor at random following this next edition of Nitro. :)

Official Prediction Card

*Faces always listed first

Harlem Heat vs. The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom)

the Wrecking Crew ain't no Beverly Brothers (and I liked the Beverlys lol)

Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Kidman w/ Lodi

Tajiri is still a nobody here

Goldberg vs. Mortis w/ James Vandenberg

Who betta than Mortis? Well, Goldberg tonight.

“Lionheart” Chris Jericho vs. Fit Finlay

If Flair wins, he faces Hennig in a No DQ match at WW3/If nWo wins, Flair can never challenge Hennig again: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair vs. an nWo member of Eric Bischoff’s choosing

With The Outsiders already wrestling, the only other nWo-ite that Flair would realistically agree to lose to is Hogan or Macho....and that ain't happening here, in the Semi-Main event

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper, “The Total Package” Lex Luger, & The Giant vs. Curt Hennig & The Outsiders

Not clean....DQ or general chaos

WCW Monday Night Nitro

Date: Week 2 November 1997

Announcers: Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay, Bobby Heenan

Venue: Rimrock Auto Arena (MO)

Attendance: 10,801

Opening

After the usual pyro display, Tony, Mike and Bobby welcome the fans and put over tonight’s big main event 6-man tag match pitting Piper, Luger and The Giant against The Outsiders and Curt Hennig. Additionally they discussed Eric Bischoff’s offer to Ric Flair to face an nWo member of his choosing for the right to face Hennig to a match at World War 3. We're looking at possibly the most exciting night of wrestling action in the history of the sport! Lastly, the announce team noted that Larry Zbyszko was in the building tonight, despite not being at the commentary desk.

Grade: (B-)

The Slap

The program was quickly overrun by the familiar sounds of “Voodoo Child” as Hogan and Bischoff came out to once again hijack the program. Hogan and Bischoff proceed to run down JJ Dillon and laughing at the idea that Sting would have the guts to put his name on the dotted line at World War 3.

Until Hogan and Bischoff are stunningly interrupted by “Geeze! Don’t you guys ever shut up?” As Larry Zbyszko made his way down the aisle with a microphone in hand. Larry proceeded to tell Hogan and Bischoff that the fans were sick and tired of their act. As “The Living Legend” entered the ring, Bischoff began warning Zbyszko, emphatically poking him the chest, that he’d been told that his place was at the announce desk and he better start minding his own business or he was going to get hurt.

Zbyszko responded by saying for Eric to get his paws off of him and to stop threatening him. Bischoff told Larry that he’d do what he want and Larry responded by giving Eric the stiffest open hand slap to the jaw sending Biscoff crumpling to the ground! Hogan immediately came Larry and the two began throwing punches.

Grade: (B+)

He’s Here!

Hogan quickly overrun Zbyszko despite the former AWA champ’s best efforts. Bischoff climbed back to his feet rubbing his jaw and made his way over and began throwing a few kicks on the downed announcer.

Neither Hogan or Bischoff noticed that Sting had suddenly appeared behind the two nWo chieftains as the crowd began to stir into a frenzy. Sting grabbed Bischoff by the hair from behind and pulled him back into the Scorpion Deathdrop. Hollywood turned around to see Bischoff in the prone position and his face lit up in fear shaking his head back and forth. Sting stared coldly at Hogan before dropping Bischoff to the mat with the Deathdrop! Hogan thought for a minute about charging, but Zbyszko, his shirt collar torn, was back on his feet, side by side with Sting and Hogan dropped out of the ring, pulling Bischoff by the feet as the crowd wildly celebrated for Sting and Zbyszko as the show went to commercial break.

Grade: (A)

The Plea

When the program returned back, Sting was still in the middle of the ring. But now it was JJ Dillon in front him, urging Sting. Sting stared at Dillon blankly, his affect inscrutable. Dillon spoke into a microphone. “Sting, just give us a commitment. Let us know you’ll be at World War 3 and you’ll sign the contract to face Hogan at Starrcade.” It was a long moment as Sting simply gazed at Dillon before backing out of the ring and heading to the back. Dillon’s shoulders slumped in the ring looking desperate.

Grade: (B+)

Harlem Heat vs. The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom)

Not much to report on here other than Booker T and Stevie going over the former Beverly Brothers in a decent match. The announcers chatted through much of the match about the big opening to the program they’ve already had and hyped up the double main event still to come.

Winners: Harlem Heat

Grade: ©

We’ve Got Things Under Control

Backstage in the locker room Nash, Hall, Savage and Elizabeth were talking with “Hollywood” Hogan and Eric Bischoff, the latter selling a neck injury from the Scorpion Deathdrop he received a short time ago. Hogan and Bischoff explained that they were leaving to get Eric’s neck checked out and Nash, Hall and Savage assured them they had things under control here and we’re going to take care of Roddy Piper, Lex Luger and The Giant tonight.

Grade: (A)

Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Kidman w/ Lodi

Young Yoshihiro Tajiri was making his WCW debut here against Flock member Kidman (accompanied by the Flock’s sign wielding lackey Lodi). Tajiri did have a fair showing, but ultimately came up short against the ever itchy Kidman, succumbing to the dazzling “Seven Year Itch” (shooting star press).

Winner: Kidman

Grade: (C-)

A Message

Following the bout, Raven and the rest of the Flock joined Kidman and Lodi in the ring. Raven sat in the corner with his grungy entourage spread around the ring like a disease. Raven cut a few minute promo speaking to a certain member of the WCW roster who knows what it’s like to be fighting from underneath, to be doubted by everyone and to continue to present and indomitable spirit. Raven said that individual and himself were a lot alike and said he’d be waiting for him to come and join his Flock. Tony, Mike and Bobby were left wondering who Raven was talking about.

Grade: (B+)

Goldberg vs. Mortis w/ James Vandenburg

The announce team revealed that Goldberg would face Steve McMichael at World War 3 in 2 weeks as the former Falcon tore through Mortis in under 5 minutes.

Winner: Goldberg

Grade: ©

Blood is Thicker

“Mean” Gene was out to letch on the Nitro girls before welcoming Ted DiBiase and the Steiners out for a brief interview. DiBiase, Rick and Scott all reassured Gene that coming off their win against The Faces of Fear on Saturday Night, their problems were set aside and the brothers were ready for this Saturday Night’s big title defense against Vicious & Delicious: Scott Norton and Buff Bagwell. Both Steiners also threw their names in the ring for the big 60-man World War 3 battle royal where the victor would be promised a number 1 contendership.

Grade: (C+)

“Lionheart” Chris Jericho vs. Fit Finlay

A good seesaw matchup without any significant story assigned to it here. Jericho was able to put the double tough Irishman down with a Lionsault and Tenay noted that Jericho has been pretty hot lately.

Winner: Chris Jericho

Grade: (C+)

Pre Match

Tenay, Schiavone and Heenan reset the program by mansplaining the recent history between Curt Hennig and Ric Flair. They also revealed that if Ric Flair did win the bout, that Flair and Hennig would face off in a No Disqualification Match at World War 3 with the United States Title on the line. If Flair lost, Flair could never challenge Curt Hennig again.

Next, Ric Flair was introduced with his usual gusto and Bischoff’s selected opponent was none other than... the nWo’s resident brick wall: Scott “Flash” Norton (accompanied by Vincent).

OOC: I wish I had not already booked this show otherwise I would've totally stolen Beejus' prediction guess and traded for The Great Muta from nWo Japan.... Damn you Beejus for having better ideas than my own.

Grade: ©

If Flair wins, he faces Hennig in a No DQ match at WW3/If nWo wins, Flair can never challenge Hennig again: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair vs. Scott “Flash” Norton w/ Vincent

The two battled through some bad chemistry and worked a typical Flair/powerhouse match that you’ve probably seen before (mostly likely with: a Road Warrior, Nikita Koloff, The Giant, Lex Luger, etc.). Norton dominated Flair for a good majority of the bout but was Flair was able to surprise everyone when he slipped out of Norton’s patented shoulder-breaker and school-boyed the big man! “The Dirtiest Player in the Game” even put his feet on the ropes for the little extra bit of leverage to make sure he got the win! Flair and Hennig had a date for World War 3!

Winner: Ric Flair

Grade: ©

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper, “The Total Package” Lex Luger, & The Giant vs. The Outsiders & Curt Hennig

With Hogan and Bischoff out of the building, things had not gone the nWo’s way tonight and Hennig and the Outsiders looked to stem the tide in this one. For the better part of 10 minutes, we had a decent, open tag match here. The match was built around the heels getting their heat on Piper who made the hot tag to Luger. Luger had a big run against the legal man Hennig and Hennig hit the floor. Luger came out after him and continued pressing his advantage over Hennig as the two brawled further up the aisle.

Seemingly from nowhere, Ric Flair burst through the crowd and tackled Hennig! Flair straddled Hennig as the US champ curled and tried to cover up as much as possible. Flair furiously laid in fists as hard as he good.

The nWo responded by spilling from the curtain, as Bagwell and Norton quickly went after Luger and the bell rang furiously.

Winners: no contest

Grade: (B-)

OH MY GOD! I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT!

As Luger fought against both Bagwell and Norton and Hennig and Flair tussled on the ground, the aisle was full of action. Meanwhile, the ring was lighting up with fisticuffs too as Savage stormed the ring and furiously brawled with Piper and quickly the two were swallowed up by the crowd as the took it to cheap seats.

That left The Giant putting on a massive tour de force performance in the ring. The big man alternated between both Hall and Nash, dishing out headbutts, athletic looking kicks, and giant overhand chops. After one particularly devastating headbutt, Nash hit the mat and rolled to the floor. That allowed The Giant to focus his entire attention on Scott Hall. After dropping him with one mighty chokeslam, The Giant grabbed a table from underneath the ring and dropped Hall with a second chokeslam, this time through the table!

The big man wasn’t done there. He hit the floor eyeing down Kevin Nash with bad intent. Nash tried to flee but the Giant kept coming. He sent Nash into the guardrail a handful of times as the two made it top of the entrance set. There, the Giant unleashed another devastating chokeslam laying out “Big Sexy” in front of one of the large WCW signs. Nash lay prone beneath the silver letters. The Giant still was not satisfied, his rage still boiling. The big man went behind the letters and in an unbelievable feat of strength, flipped the giant WCW letter set piece right over on top of Nash! Schiavone screamed “I've never seen anything like it!” as the Giant stood tall, looming over the destruction.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this episode of Nitro. You've done a great job nailing the big moments of chaos that usually closed the show and I really loved this presentation of The Giant. Hopefully he can keep the momentum going and assert himself as a true main event player for years to come (unlike the real Giant/Big Show who all too often feel and rose down the card in both WCW and WWE seemingly at random).

The opening segment was just as good. Between Sting, Giant, Larry, etc. I like that the faces aren't completely wilting to the nWo...another issues that plagued the real WCW.

<p>Dean Malenko - <em>Finlay still has a few legs under him, but by this time I generally start phasing him into just being used as an occasional road agent.</em></p><p>

Faces of Fear - <em>Haku and Barbarian are awesome!</em></p><p>

Goldberg</p><p>

Rey Mysterio Jr - <em>I could see Eddy costing Ultimo the match so that he gets Rey all to himself.</em></p><p>

Flair and Piper - <em>Piper doesn't lose.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Harlem Heat</p><p>

Raven</p><p>

Disco Inferno - <em>Too bad this isn't 1987 or else Bobby would be the favorite.</em></p><p>

Ray Traylor - <em>As much as I love his Lordship, Traylor actually has business with the nWo about this time, so he takes a win here so he looks good in the battle.</em></p><p>

Psychosis</p><p>

Scott Hall - <em>An nWo Founding Father on Saturday Night? It must be Scott Hall! Actually, this should be an awesome match between veterans.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Bonus: Street Fight, after their last encounter saw a ton of outside the ring brawling. I could say Cage match, but it'd be pretty awkward to put a cage around all three rings at WW3...</p>

Once everyone piled in the ring, Hogan grabbed a mic and proceeded to run down the group for letting everything get so out of hand last week.
