The Road to DESTRUCTION continued tonight as 1,800 fans sold out the Shibata Cultural Center. Minoru Suzuki bounced back from his NEVER Openweight Title loss rather quickly, pinning David Finlay after a Gotch-Style Piledriver. After some undeniably heated exchanges with new champ Michael Elgin, Suzuki continued his aggression after the match, shoving, slapping and punching anyone that got in his way. It seems as if the feud between these two is still not yet over.

 

Another result of note saw Tama Tonga score a big win over IWGP Tag Team Champion Raymond Rowe. Tonga and his brother Tanga Loa will have another shot at the title in a few days, and they can only hope this momentum will carry over for them. DESTRUCTION in HIROSHIMA is live on 9/16!

Zack Sabre Jr. made his first appearance on the tour, submitting David Finlay with the Jim Breaks Armbar in the main event of the evening. Sabre will have a chance to once again submit Hiroshi Tanahashi at DESTRUCTION in HIROSHIMA. Tanahashi has tapped out to Sabre's submissions twice before, and Sabre will have the chance to secure the IWGP Intercontinental Title the next time he is in the ring with the "Ace of the Universe". DESTRUCTION in HIROSHIMA proved to be a successful night for singles champions, and a challenge for tag teams. Both the IWGP Tag Team Champions and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions lost their titles tonight - Suzuki-gun used the distractions of Miho Abe, Taichi's valet, to take advantage of Taguchi Japan, while the Guerrillas of Destiny won the Tag Team Title without ever pinning the champions, War Machine. It would not be surprising to see both former champions have another shot at their titles in the near future. War Machine in particular will have one more chance later on at DESTRUCTION in KOBE.

 

While the tag title changes were exciting, it was the singles title matches that stole the show. KUSHIDA made his 2nd successful defense against El Desperado, while Hiroshi Tanahashi did the same against Zack Sabre Jr. KUSHIDA was confronted by Tiger Mask in the backstage press room after his match, who challenged him to a title match. Tiger hasn't challenged for the Jr. Heavyweight Title since 2010, but he scored a win over KUSHIDA in this year's Best of the Super Jr. tournament. This could be his final chance to capture a title he's held six times previously.

 

However, the challenge that transpired in the ring after the main event will be the one to steal headlines. After defeating Sabre and addressing the crowd, Tanahashi was confronted by none other than "Golden Star" Kota Ibushi! Ibushi defeated Tanahashi in the G1 Climax, which all but guarantees him a title shot if he requests it. Ibushi has a 1-1 record against Tanahashi, and this Intercontinental Title match, which will most likely be the main event of Power Struggle in November, will serve as the rubber match. The New Japan action does not stop as the Road to DESTRUCTION continues tomorrow night!

Good match for Roppongi to end with. They celebrated for the crowd afterwards, as both were pretty emotional. Beretta's heavyweight run has been up and down so far, but he seems to have the number of both Takahashi and Owens after this tour.</div>

Nice win for Ibushi on his first (and only) match of the tour. It obviously helped add some legitimacy to the challenge he issued later in the night. Ibushi looked strong, and will prove to be a tough challenge for Tanahashi. While Ibushi was in the spotlight, the simmering tensions between Elgin and Suzuki continued.</div>

An upset win for the Suzuki-gun juniors. This is their second reign, but it seems like this feud is far from over. It wouldn't be a shock to see Funky Future take advantage of the rematch clause and get themselves another title shot sometime before the Super Jr. Tag Tournament in the late fall.</div>

A match of the year contender, for sure. Sabre bent Tanahashi's arm in every way possible, but the "Ace of the Universe" overcame the pain and proved victorious with a High Fly Flow as he has so many times before. To the surprise of many, Kota Ibushi, one of the three men who defeated Tanahashi in the G1 Climax, came out after the match to issue a challenge for the Intercontinental Title. We can expect this to main event Power Struggle in November.</div>

I am finally working out how to approriately use Match Aims, but asking Sabre and Tanahashi to steal the show seemed to work out pretty well. I am very happy with the result here.
