Explaining rapid worker popularity gains

Recommended Posts

I understand that to gain popularity, you want to build momentum (via wins and angle wins) then have the worker win against a more popular worker. A lot of the times, one person wins at the expense of another (one person gains 5 pop, the other loses 5 pop) so there's no/very little overall gain.

Sometimes, I've noticed the AI run companies are able to pull off very rapid popularity gains and I'm not really sure how this is happening or how I could replicate it.

I'm playing CVerse 2005. The worker I'll be using as an example is Mean Jean Cattley (The Mean Machine in MAW). He has 66 Charisma and 47 Menace, so the dominate note should do nothing for him.

At the start of the game (Dec 2005), he's at 30 pop in the Mid Atlantic. That month, he wrestled Eddie Howard (21 pop) for a 47 rated match. No angles. This was a title defense (79 prestige). Eddie's popularity stayed at 21, Mean Machine's jumped from 30 to 35.

In January 2006, it looked like a tournament based event. He defeated Eddie Howard again in a 46 rated match. Later in the night, he lost to DC Rayne in a 48 rated match. Eddie stayed at 21. DC Rayne went from 16 to 20. Mean Machine went from 35 to 45!!!

I don't understand how that works. DC Rayne had a win earlier in the night, so he probably went into his match with Machine at over 16 and under 20 popularity. Machine was at worst 35 pop going into the match. So Machine with at worst 35 pop loses to a guy with at best 20 pop and he shoots all the way up to 45!

How is he gaining popularity so quickly? He's not in angles, he's not wrestling anyone more popular than him and his match ratings aren't THAT good

He's not in the angles that you see. The AI doesn't display all angles as otherwise their show reports would be full of "X does a quick interview" entries, so he may well be getting boosts off the "hidden" stuff.

His SQ is 20 so it's not that. My understanding of SQ is that it's a more indirect popularity gain mechanism. It gives bonuses to any segments or matches that they are in, and higher ratings will lead to the talent getting over easier.

NB That's not entirely true. Going from say 35 to 37 off of let's say 3 hidden strong angles in a show isn't too surprising (though for me, it's much slower than that), but going from 35 to 45 in a single night off of angles (and going 1-1 against two workers less popular than him) seems extreme.

Rip Chord is in MAW, isn't he? A few hidden segments with him, and I'd say almost any of the wrestlers there would skyrocket. Chord has great Entertainment skills, and 80's in the pop I believe. I'm not sure what Chord or Mean Jean Cattley are rated on but that could be it in my eyes, I mean I'd use Chord to get others over, so why wouldn't the AI?..

Paired with whatever other bonuses included, Chord would be my guess as to how his pop would shoot up so rapidly.

Also I based Chord's skills and pop off of the 2010 mod, so I don't know if I was near or far, but separated by 5 years.. you'd think it wasn't by much.

Yup, Rip Chord is 85 pop. I tested a MAW game and got Matt from 29 to 31 with a "Keep Strong" win over a less popular worker and 4 segments with Rip. Not getting the astronomical 35 to 45 gains, but pretty fast considering I didn't sacrifice anyone to do it. I'd imagine things like momentum and better crowd management could get me a few extra points

Bobbi: When you make an angle, you can select "Impact" as "Major" or "Minor." I think that's what hidden angles refers to. If you look at your Show History, not all segments are shown. I think things like "Joanne Rodriguez puts on makeup" or "Khoklov is in his locker pacing back and forth" are minor and aren't shown when you look at Show History
