WCW The Butterfly Effect

Some people want to forget the past

Some people want to change it

There are moments in time we chose to remember

But what if you could go back in time and change the one thing that set the tone for an entire decade? The one decision that started the downward fall of World Championship Wrestling for the early 1990s.

This is that change

The Wrestling Lariat

Monday, Week 1, December 1990

Rumors swirl out of the CNN Tower in Atlanta that owner of the now World Championship Wrestling, Ted Turner, is furious at the current direction of WCW and has gone on a firing spree at the top. WCW President Jim Heard and head booker Ole Anderson have been released from their duties and it appears Ted Turner himself will have a stronger influence on the product. With just weeks before the biggest event of 1990, Starrcade '90 Collision Course, everything is on the table as we move forward into 1991. Assumptions backstage are that Turner hated the direction that Heard and Anderson had agree to go with the Black Scorpion angle. With Turner now in charges, everyone is wondering what sort of change that Turner can create in such a short amount of time that will pay off an angle that has been built up for the last 6 months.

Who will the Black Scorpion be?My first thought was Rick Rude, but if my memory is right, when did him and sting cross paths? or where ever friends?I don't recall sting and Rude going at each other until 1992/93 during the Dangerous Alliance era. So I have thought about 3 possible people it could be. they are Eddie Gilbert,The Ultimate Warrior and Nikita Koloff.I think this seems like something Gilbert would do,would be kool if it was the Warrior, but I am going with Nikita Koloff"The Russian Nightmare"

The Black Scorpion v Sting ©

The Black Scorpion defeated Sting in 22:31 seconds

The Black Scorpion was dressed head to toe in all black with the only skin showing on his hands and from the eye holes in the mask. When the two stood toe to toe, they appeared to be roughly the same height and weight. The match started slowly with Sting trying to feel out his opponent and as pointed out by Jim Ross and Paul E Dangerously on commentary, possible trying to figure out who his opponent was early on. As the match progressed, the brutality of the match escalated Jim Ross couldn't pin point who the man in the mask was, but Paul E started to pull for the Black Scorpion saying that there was something awfully familiar about him.

The end of the match came as Sting had the advantage and whipped The Black Scorpion into the corner and charged in and went for the Stinger Splash, but the Black Scorpion moved out of the way, and Sting went head first into the cage. As Sting staggered back, the Black Scorpion grabbed Sting by the back of the head and hit him with, as Paul E called, the Rude Awaking. The Black Scorpion covered for a 3 count as Paul E was screaming in joy. Jim Ross questioned what Paul E was doing, and Paul E said I've had enough of your crap Ross, I've had enough of this stupid company. I'm going to celebrate with my client. Paul E threw down his head set and grabbed the world title from ring side and walked into the cage to present the belt to the Black Scorpion. Paul E handed the belt to the Black Scorpoin, who removed his mask to reveal himself to be....

Ravishing Rick Rude. Rude stood over the fallen Stinger and gyrated his hips as he raised the championship in the air to a chorus of boos.

The show ended with Rude and Dangerously standing over the fallen Stinger, and Jim Ross asking what in the hell is Paul E doing with Rude, and why did Rude set his sights on the Stinger. Jim says join on us on the first Saturday in January for WCW Saturday Night and hopefully get some answers as to why!

Monday, Week 4, December 1990

The Wrestling Lariat

News out of Atlanta

Reports out of the CNN Tower is that this week of television will be year end recap shows and the first new show will be the first WCW Saturday Night in January. The other report is that WCW Main Event and WCW World Wide will become clip shows and will no longer be showing new content. WCW Saturday Night will be the 100% focus of the company.

Rumor has it that Paul E Dangerously has requested and been granted the opportunity to open WCW Saturday Night. His client and new WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ravishing Rick Rude will let the world know the reason behind the smoke and mirrors and why and how the Black Scorpion came to be.

In other news there have been lots of talks with talents on the roster who are under pay per appearance deals, have been offered written guaranteed deals. Also there have been lots of talk going around the office that lots of talent have been in discussion with the company to sign new long term deals. The rumblings around the office is that a lot of the older talent on the roster who aren't signed to written contracts will most likely be released.

OOC Stuff

Starrcade was written more like a look back, then watching it live. WCW Saturday Night will write ups will be more along those lines, without pictures and only the big angles written up. PPVs and Clash of the Champions events will be written like you are watching them live and will be the only events that have prediction contests with them. I have the calendar set up right now as 8 PPVs and 4 Clashes, with an event a month. Not exactly how it was in 91, but it'll work better for TEW. Any feed back on how to make my diary better, let me know!!!

Monday, Week 1, January 1991

The Wrestling Lariat

News out of Atlanta

World Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance have split ways. Ted Turner has decided that he doesn't need the NWA and his brand of WCW can stand on its own. Apparently the final straw was the hiring of Ric Rude and putting the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on him without consulting the NWA Board of Directors. The Crocketts, David and Jim Jr, have also left WCW on the heels of this change. It is obvious that Ted Turner is out to do it his way, and isn't listening to those that convinced him to put NWA on the Turner Station.

A brand new training center called the WCW Power Plant has opened to train the next generation of superstars. The Power Plant will focus on technical wrestling and will be training both male and female talent. The head trainer will be Jody Hamilton who will also continue on with WCW as a road agent as well. Hope is that the connection between Hamilton as a road agent, and Hamilton as a trainer will allow the new talent to make an easier transition to the roster.

With the holiday season over, WCW has released the following talents and backstage workers from their contracts: El Cubano (Fidel Sierra), George South, Jim Clontz, Jimmy Jett, Lance Russell, Lethal Larry Cameron, Mark Kyle, Master Blaster Blade (Al Green), Mike Graham, Moondog Rex (Randy Colley), Motor City Madman (Mike Moore), Pat Rose, Pez Whatley, Ranger Ross, Rip Rogers, The Italian Stallion, The Minotaur (Steve DiSalvo), Tim Horner

OOC Note:

It'll probably be about a week to 10 days before I get any of the WCW Saturday Nights up. Have some family stuff I have to leave town to deal with. I look forward to getting back and pushing forward on the story that has been tumbling in my head for the last 6 months or so. I have a basic direction I want to go, and have about a year long arc some what sketched out. I'm excited to see how my vision will unfold.

Any thoughts on what the first prediction contest should be for?

Show Rating 60

TV Rating 2.83

Promo of the Night

Paul E Dangerously leads the WCW World Heavyweight Champion Rick Rude to the ring to a chorus of boos, as Rude's WCW theme blasts over the PA system. Both men climb into the ring and Paul hands Rude a microphone.

Rick Rude: CUT THE MUSIC. What I'd like to have right now. Is for all you fat, out of shape, Stinger fans, keep the noise down, while I take my robe off, and show you what a REAL World Heavyweight Champion looks like! Hit the music.

Rude hands Paul the mic, and slowly undoes his robe and lets it fall behind him and raises his arms about his head and starts to gyrate his hips with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship wrapped around his waist. As the music stops again, Paul takes his turn.

Paul E Dangerously: For two weeks now, every single day little Stingers are yelling at me, "Why Paul, Why." Why did you go to war with the man called Sting? Why did you orchestrate the end of his first and what will become his only, world heavyweight championship reign.

Paul lets the fans booing die down, before he speaks again.

Paul E Dangerously: I'll tell you why. The idiots in charge of this company wanted to strip me of my managing license and stick me at that stupid table next to that idiot Jim Ross. They were scared of what would happen if I managed to put the world title around on of my clients. They were scared of what this place would become, because they were scared of me. So I took one look at the golden child of WCW and knew he was who I had to make an example. So I came up with this grand scheme to make sure that when the time was right, that my man would walk away with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Paul looks at Rick Rude with a smile of pride on his face, as Rude gives Paul a pat on the back.

Paul E Dangerously: So I came up with the whole Black Scorpion idea. I knew you were too stupid to see through it Sting. For months you were racking your brain trying to figure out who it could be. What man from your past hated you so much that he would invest so much time to bring you down. Well you see Sting, I knew you'd think it was Eddie Gilbert or Ric Flair or even that ultimate painted idiot you use to call your partner. But you never thought for one second that everything was a lie. Everything was a lie to make you think about everything but defending this title when the time was right.

Paul taps the belt that is now on the shoulder of Rude.

Paul E Dangerously: And when the time was right, I knew WCW and you Sting, were in for one big rude awaking. Because now with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship wrapped safely around the waist of my client, we have formed the most dangerous alliance this company has ever seen!

Paul hands the microphone to Rude again.

Rick Rude: Hate to break it to you Stinger, but this was never about you. When Paul called and said he had an offer I couldn't refused I listened. And he laid out the plan and promised me the day I walk into a WCW ring I would walk out the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. I didn't even bother to ask who I would be facing. Paul was so sure of this plan, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. It wasn't until I got another call from Paul when he told me it had started that I flipped on the TV and saw it was you. For 6 months I trained for the day we would step into the ring, because there was only one outcome that would be allowed. A Rude Awaking and me walking out of that cage with this belt.

The fans again starting booing Rude, but he waits a few moments before continuing.

Rick Rude: Now I know what you are already going to say Sting. You didn't, you couldn't prepare, you were caught off guard. That when you get your rematch it'll be different. But let me promise you something Sting. It doesn't matter if you had 1 hour, 1 week or 1 year to prepare, you will never beat me Sting. I already know you've requested your rematch, and let me tell exactly when it'll happen. In 8 weeks time at SuperBrawl, you'll get your rematch Sting. And after you lose, you'll never get another shot at this title! Now hit my music.

TBS Furious with WCW

Following an awful WCW Saturday Night on the third Saturday of the month, TBS is said to be displeased at the recent show and demands that WCW put a better product on tv. Everyone is already beginning to question if Ted Turner has what it takes to run WCW. There is worry that this last 3 weeks has already cost WCW fans.

Jimmy Garvin drunk at TV taping

Jimmy Garvin of the Fabulous Freebirds showed up drunk to his match with the Young Pistols. Rumor has it that Garvin was only going to be fined but the fact that TBS has come down hard on the WCW product, that Ted Turner felt he had no choice but had to fire Garvin for his actions. This makes 2 weeks in a row that a member of the WCW roster has shown up and wrestled on TV wasted.

Dusty Rhodes Gone!

Following the Royal Rumble, the WWF and Dusty Rhodes will be parting ways. Rumors immediately have begun to swirl that Dusty Rhodes will find his way back to WCW.

Vince McMahon launches WBF

Vince McMahon held an event at the Plaza Hotel in New York today announcing the formation of the World Bodybuilding Federation. The promotion is set to capitalize on the growing buzz around bodybuilding in the United States. McMahon has used substantial personal resources to launch the promotion and is betting quite a bit on its success.

OOC

Following the 3rd WCW Saturday night , WCW declined to Cult status. I'll have to change slightly how I book things in game along with changing the Product of WCW slightly, but hope to be able to tell the story in the direction I want to and rebound quickly.

If anyone has any feedback on the shows so far, i'd love to hear it. The Clash will be more of a typed out show with pictures and what not. And while I got no feedback on what the prediction contest should be, I have decided what the winner shall receive. But will wait to announce it until it makes sense with the game.

Larry Zbyszko v Owen Hart

In a really fantastic match to start the show and really got the crowd into it. Owen Hart came out and took advantage early, really got the upper hand and frustrating the Living Legend. After a few minutes of Owen besting the legend, Zbyszko took a powder to the floor to slow the action down. Zbyszko tricked the youngster into chasing him to the floor. After that Zbyszko really slowed the pace of the match down until a mistake allowed Owen to get quick break from a beating. After several high impact kicks and a few near falls, Owen went to the top rope for a missile drop kick that landed on the button. In a shock Owen Hart pinned Larry Zybzsko in 17:32 following the drop kick. Zybzsko tried to attack Owen after the match, but Owen rolled out the ring to celebrate, while

In a decent match, Double A and JYD told a great story in the ring keeping the crowd hot. Art Barr v Z-Man ©

In another sold match Art Barr and Z-Man went all out. Barr got the upper hand early yelling to Missy Hyatt at ringside to ask if she liked what she saw. Barr got a little to cocky talking to Missy allowing Z-Man to get the upper hand. As both men went all out, the crowd really got into. Z-Man hit the super kick, the move that has won him every one of his 7 title defenses, but Barr was too close to the ropes and for the first time since she came to ringside weeks ago, Missy Hyatt got involved and put Barr's foot on the ropes and yelled at the ref to check his foot. Z-Man got up to his feet having saw Missy put the foot on the rope to yell at her. This allowed Barr to attack Z-Man from behind hitting a german suplex. Barr went to the top rope and hit what Jim Ross called a Frog Splash that absolutely wowed the fans. Barr pinned Z-Man at 14:17 with only 43 seconds left in the 15 minute time limit to become the new Television Champion. Missy and Barr celebrated leaving a dejecting Z-Man in the ring.

Kevin Sullivan v Brian Pillman

In a rematch from two weeks ago, Kevin Sullivan took an early advantage and started to beat down and punish Pillman for almost beating him two weeks ago. Sullivan went for covers early, but only pulled Pillman's shoulders up telling him he isn't getting off that easy. Pillman got several hope rushes in midway through the match, but Sullivan cut him off each time. Sullivan eventually attempted to tie Pillman in the Tree of Woe, only for Pillman to barely escape and sending Sullivan to the floor. Pillman climbed to the top rope and jumped off the top onto Sullivan with a cross body from the top rope to the floor. Pillman and Sullivan brawled around ringside and were almost counted out by the ref, but Pillman was able to roll into the ring at the 9 count but rolled right back out to grab Sullivan. Pillman rolled Sullivan back into the ring and followed it up by hitting a a springboard Air Pillman onto Sullivan for a 3 count at 19:29 for the win.

The Steiner Brothers v Doom

The Steiners and Doom proved to the wrestling world why they are two of the best tag teams on the planet today with a hard hitting back and forth match up. Both teams had moments where they were in total control. Both teams hit finishers only to be saved by their partner. At the 22 minute mark the ref lost total control of the match with both teams brawling into the ring and onto the floor. Out of no where two men jumped the railing forcing the ref to call a double DQ at 24:44

Stan Hansen & Rick Rude v Lex Luger & Sting

Sting and Luger went right at Rude and Hansen from the bell. Surprisingly getting the early upper hand before the bell rang until Rude and Hansen rolled to the floor. The fans were into everything during this match, and were the hottest they had been all night. Dangerously pulled both men together and sent Hansen into the ring first as the ref called for the bell. Luger told Sting to go to the outside, and went towards Hansen, who tagged out immediately to Rude. Rude and Luger started off things off. Rude attempted early to over power Luger at first but failed several times in a row. It wasn't until Rude took a cheap shot to the knee of Luger that he gained control.

Rude and Hansen then tagged and out leaving Sting on the outside for almost the first 10 minutes of the match. Luger took a hell of a beating early. Sting was finally tagged in at the 10 minute mark to a huge pop, and came in and cleared house. Sting finally got his hands on Rude on the outside of the ring, ramming him into the guardrail and at the ring post. Sting whipped Rude into the guardrail and went for a huge Stinger splash but Rude slide out of the way sending Sting crashing into the guardrail and tumbling into the crowd. The only reason Sting made it back into the ring before the ten count was because Luger helped Sting back into ringside and then back into the ring.

With Sting back into the ring Rude tagged in Hansen, and Hansen began to just beat down Sting. Quick tags followed as Luger begged to get back into the ring. After multiple near falls, Sting final makes his way to Luger to make the tag. Again the crowd went nuts as a fired up Luger hit clothesline, after clothesline onto Rude and Hansen. Shoulder block, after shoulder block onto the pair was followed by Hansen being sent to the outside and Luger picked Rude for the Torture Rack. After a minute of struggle, Paul E Dangerously jumped onto the ring apron distracting the ref allowing Hansen to roll back into the ring and clip out the legs' of Luger. Hansen started putting the boots to Luger who was soon joined by Rude. As both men were being yelled at by the ref, Sting had enough and all 4 men began brawling again. Sting and Hansen matched up and ended up on the outside of the ring as Luger and Rude. Luger got the upper hand on Rude as Hansen got the upper hand on Sting on the floor. Sting staggered back into the ring post, seeming to be the only thing holding him up. Hansen charged Sting and missed a lariat on Sting and hit the ring post. Sting rolled back into the ring as Luger pushed Rude back into the corner. Luger turned to Sting and yelled at him as he set Rude up in the corner. As the ref moved closer to check on Rude, Sting rushed across the ring and leaped into the air for a Stinger Splash. Once Sting leaped into the air, Rude grabbed the ref by the arm and pulled him close to him and Sting smashed into the back of Nick Patrick, sending the ref the canvas.

The camera shot changes to ringside where Paul E Dangerously is standing on the ramp waving his arms towards the ring yelling now. The shot changes again to the entrance way where two men come rushing out to a chorus of boos.

The Miracle Violence Connection of "Dr Death" Steve Williams and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy come rushing down the ramp and hit the ring and start laying a beating onto Sting and Luger. Both men tried to defend themselves, but were over come by the fresh duo. Williams and Gordy both hit multiple suplex on both men before sending Luger to the floor from the direction of Rick Rude, who grabbed Sting and hit him with a Rude Awaking. Rude stood over sting gyrating his hips as Dangerously started shaking the ref and pushed him towards the center of the ring for a sluggish 3 count from a dazed Nick Patrick at 31:32.

Match Rating 75

As the bell ring, Gordy and Williams slide back into the ring and start beating down Sting again. Dangerously climbs into the ring with a microphone as Gordy and Williams holds up the Sting as Rude takes cheap shots on him. Luger attempts to get back into the ring to help sting, but Gordy and Williams drop Sting and quickly overwhelm Luger and throw him out of the ring.

WCW Clash of the Champions XIV Fall Out

Rick Steiner was a little banged up following the show, but if he misses more than a week in the ring it would be a shock.

Z-Man has been rumored to have gotten even more heat following the injury to Jack Victory. Both Ric Flair and Dick the Bruiser are rumored to see nothing in the Z-Man. With those two voices plus the injury, it should come as no surprise why Z-Man lost the TV Title last night.

Owen Hart, Art Barr and Rick Rude were all said to have received public praise following the show from Ted Turner.

TBS was very happy with not only the action in the ring at the Clash, but the viewer ship the event received as well going head to head with the WWF PPV the Royal Rumble. Although the fact Turner owns TBS and TNT there is no fear at the moment of WCW losing its TV slot, Turner was said to be very upbeat as the show went on.

Gordon Solie, Tony Schiavone, Mike Atkins all were given their released last night. In the case of Solie and Schiavone it was a case of too many announcers and not enough spots now that WCW is only focused on WCW Saturday Night. Atkins it appears was let go to bring a different ref into his spot.

There has also been rumors of lots of contract talks with talents currently not under written contract. The number of wrestlers ranges anywhere from 8 to 16 depending on who we talk to. But the reason why WCW would be looking to hire that many people with the current size of their roster is completely unknown.

WWF Royal Rumble Results

With the Clash of Champions on cable TV, the WWE presented The Royal Rumble live on PPV from the American Legion Stadium in front of 20,505 people.

British Bulldog over Hercules

Nikolai Volkoff defeated Barry Hardy

Bushwacker Luke defeated Brookyln Brawler by DQ

Bob Bradley defeated Jim Powers

Burke, Douglas and Costello defeated Orient Express & Zhukov

The Rockets defeated Demolition by DQ

Bushwhacker Butch defeated Mr Perfect for the Intercontinental Title

The Nasty Boys defeated the Hart Foundation by DQ

Randy Savage defeated the Ultimate Warrior for the Heavyweight title

Mr Prefect outlasted 29 other men to win the Royal Rumble

The match of the weekend between WWF and WCW was clearly the WWF World Title match which will go down as the best Ultimate Warrior match in his career. Savage and Warrior were given a 94 rating for the match. Savage and Perfect sounds far more a WrestleMania main event rather than the original Sergeant Slaughter and Hulk Hogan match up we had originally heard. Although there is plenty of time for them to get their if they want.

WCW Television Championship

Promo of the Night

We cut backstage to see Paul E Dangerously walked into the locker room of Brian Pillman by himself. Pillman looks up in surprise and stands to defend himself, before Pillam realizes Paul is alone.

Paul E Dangerously: Calm down Brian, i'm alone. I'm just here to talk to you. Why is it that you take a backseat to all your friends? Sting, Luger, Z-Man, up until recently they were all champions, and where is your title shot? Where is your chance to carry the gold? You don't think you could beat those men? I know you and Z were tag partners, but you know as well as I do that you carried that team.

Brian Pillman: What do you want Paul?

Paul E Dangerously: There is a change coming Brian, and you could be the face of that change if you wanted. I heard you were going to get a TV Title shot at SuperBrawl. I mean that is great and all, but a man of your talent should be forced to wrestle in front of these idiot fans every week. A man of your talent should be forced to wrestle with such a short time limit. You should be the face of this company Brian, I could make that happen for you.

Brian Pillman: I'd love to wrestle in front of these people every week. They know just how good I am. My time will come Paul, I don't need you.

Paul E Dangerously: Think about Brian, you could be part of the greatest Alliance in professional wrestling. You could be the face of a brand new style. Its up to you Brian. Because if its not you, I'll make sure another man is. But you are my first choice.

Pillman shakes his head and Paul E walks out of the locker room.
