Tomato Can
I have decided to do something with my next save that I have never been able to do. I will run a real world mod with only... wait for it... wait for it... ...using no more than the "Ideal Roster" size. I know, sounds easy. NOT FOR ME. Especially in a real world mod. I always have to have has many of my favorites as possible, but not this time. I will be playing a 1983 mod. That means I am going to have to let some "future big names" pass. That means if I want to sign a "name", I will have to let someone else go. Going to really try it this time!! Going to be interesting. Do you ever stick to the "Ideal Roster" size only? James Casey
Hahahahahahaha....

No.

I try, ish. I try not to go ridiculously over, but I love a bit of roster churn - having to replace someone is good, and fires the creative juices, but deciding that my roster can hold one or two more.... That's a good feeling <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

In my current game, I have 33 active workers for 5 shows a month at Regional. I think that's pretty restrained of me. Looking back at my SWF game I had 80 workers on the books, although the SWF is a bigger deal than my tin-pot Regional fed...
CQI13
In my EVOLVE (USPW) game, with a few big names in decline, I've gone on a bit of a hiring spree (13 over?). But ideally some of these new hires will take the place of the ones being pushed out the door.

And being in one of the top positions (in 13 they were 3, in 16 they're 1) you don't pass up talent from other promotions when they come up if they are big enough.
Zero
I don't follow that rule but I do release my main event talent all the time to make it interesting and force me to develop new talent.
AfRoMaN36
I'm recommended to have about 68? I'm at about 93. At my worst I was in the low 100's.

I love a big roster and I develop soft spots for certain people so I don't want to get rid of them. I have about 68 that are actually being pushed. The rest are really there to take losses, until I decide it's time to push them, then I need to bring in more people to take their spot and my roster gets bigger and bigger.
Teh_Showtime
I love booking tag teams so generally I'm always over the minimum. I need teams but also jobber teams as well which can inflate the count in a hurry.

One thing I have done recently was to limit my developmental contracts to 6 months so that I'm not holding guys hostage if they end up being a bust. That helps keep the flow down as far as developmental is concerned and it also populates the indies.
atomzero
Well, the way the game plays, "ideal" is really a misnomer for "minimum." I remember hearing a stat that at its height, the WCW roster included around 250 performers.

Besides, why wouldn't you to get all the young talent under contract that you can? It stinks when you miss a chance to hire a promising worker.

If you are making money, you aren't doing anything wrong.

James Casey
In my SWF game I made a point of signing poor quality workers to developmental contracts.

If they improved quickly, great, I had a potential star-from-nowhere on my hands.

If they only improved a little, no big deal, they'd go back to the indies 10-20% better than when they joined, which would only help them.

Looking back at that game, I had developmental deals with AAA and a couple of other existing feds + started up 6 more bespoke developmental territories... I suspect at one point I was getting close to WCW numbers <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Interesting aside about WCW: One of the reasons they lost so much money is that every Monday they'd pay for every single one of those wrestlers to travel to Nitro. 90% of them would sit on their backsides all show, then travel back home (still on WCW's dime) for another week. Remarkable.

It would be cool to see some workers besides the usuals turn into big stars.

To your aside: Kevin Nash made a career out of sitting around and doing nothing <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />. They had this massive, star-studded roster, and many of them had deals that basically insured they'd never have to wrestle/lose to each other. It was a complete waste of resources. It's amazing to consider that they (at one time or another) had Hogan, Nash, Hall, Sting, Hart, Flair, Booker, Jericho, Big Show, Hennig, Goldberg, Macho, DDP, Benoit, Guerrero, Mysterio, Bulldog, and more, and yet your Starrcade 2000 main event is...Scott Steiner vs. Sid. Unreal.
Bigpapa42
WCW at its bloated peak is the burnt in the sky example of how a wrestling promotion should not be run. They managed to make almost every mistake you can make running a wrestling promotion.

I've done similar to JC in my current save, which is 2k1 WCW Lives. I have 4 developmental promotions stocked with indy talent. Many will end up released but be better workers than if they had stayed on the indy scene (not a ton of places to work in mid 2001). My actual WCW roster is only a bit above the recommended minimum, which is rare for me.

One of the mods I love but haven't had a proper save with yet is The Golden Age. I keep starting a new save with the WWF, starting figuring out who to release, look at everyone I'm going go sign and basically end up doing a "hard nope" and leaving it.

And that is what I ALWAYS do. I want to challenge myself to be more creative working new guys in and out. The "ideal" size is all that I am going to have on my main roster. I will hire young prospects and put them in development. The key is that with this self imposed rule, when I bring a young guy up someone else will have to go.

It is just a choice to add a new challenge to the game I love! :0)
smartman
That's an interesting challenge to try, but I question the wisdom of doing it with the 1983 mod. Unless you're starting at Cult, there are a lot of shows that cross with other feds' shows so if you're at min., you could start a show lacking 5 people. Probably need to do a +4-6 depending on the fed if you're doing anything pre-90's just for that reason alone. Unless hiring a bunch of local workers counts to avoid that huge penalty, in which case you have to hope there are a bunch of people in your region to choose. sabataged
Ha. I just looked at this for the first time and my ideal roster size is 32 and I have 105 active wrestlers. The problem for me is i'm in '91 and a lot of the older 80s guys refuse to retire like Dusty , JYD , Snuka , Duggan , Slaughter and Funk. Combined with younger guys like Dynamite and Adonis already being in time decline and my Women's division and It's easy to see why my roster appears so bloated. The other thing is that I'm straight up hoarding a lot of younger midcarders just so they don't go to the WWF since it's my main rival. This is always my biggest issue. When a big level guy comes up like Rocky or Nicky Champion. I dont really need them but I dont want USPW or SOTBPW to get them either so I sign them. atomzero
This is always my biggest issue. When a big level guy comes up like Rocky or Nicky Champion. I dont really need them but I dont want USPW or SOTBPW to get them either so I sign them. It's even worse in Japan. I'm running GCG, and if I don't snatch up that talented free agent, he could go to a competitor, perhaps become loyal, and be lost forever. It is so hard to acquire talent in Japan because of the loyalty factor that I hire almost any talented worker I can afford. You can't even raid smaller companies until you are quite large. I also end up giving written contracts to middling prospects because it's better than seeing them go away forever to BHOTWG.
Tomato Can
I agree 100% with every argument as to why it makes no sense to stick to the limit. I totally agree with every reason as to why we gather as many workers as possible... which is why I titled this thread "Toughest Challenge For Me. <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I want to have to be concerned with losing future prospects if I keep a veteran. I want to really be forced to choose who my Main Eventers are without having 15 Main Eventers to choose from, etc

Thus, adding a level of challenge to the game that I have never had before. Definitely a different game playing this way!!!

Career not ruined yet? Stick them in a horrible love triangle story-line. Eidenhoek
250 active people? That's...I think in my 2010 NOTBPW save I was only in the mid-hundred! Hides the archives of 500-600 developmental workers. Yeah though, it's...really hard to pass up stuff for me, too. I'm rather predatory in the game, and...well...I will ruin careers to not let you have them.
Matt_Black
I like having 6-8 people in each division on the roster, plus 6-8 more tag teams, evenly split between heels and faces, so I have a good assortment of potential feuds and storylines to keep things fresh. My current game is a perfect example. Playing with a real world mod with probably 40% less workers than reality, I'm at International size (even with WWE in that regard) and my roster?

<img alt="5fXHO0a.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/5fXHO0a.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

And that's just wrestlers and I don't think it includes people I've signed but whose contracts haven't begun yet (Ember Moon, Josie, etc) or folks out injured (with the 'not assigned yet' push) or non-wrestlers (and I have two complete announce teams, three managers, four referees, three road agents, and two authority figures). So I'm sitting at around 160 total. Still making $7-ish million a month though and that's what's important. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I wouldn't even bother trying to run a company at International with only 39 in-ring workers.
