The War to End All Wars! (An alternate history of pro wrestling)

Recommended Posts

Really enjoying this - most interesting thing is how long the other NWA members will allow Ayala to hold on to the title for and when Hogan will finally bolt from the AWA.

Thanks for following. Don't want to give up too many spoilers but let's just say that after Hogan's failed title run, it takes some time before he becomes a major player in the world of wrestling...

...as far as the NWA World title goes, we may see a big name or two somewhere down the line carrying the belt, but the days of guys like Harley Race, Dory Funk Jr., Lou Thesz and Dusty Rhodes trading the title are probably behind us!

Promoter Jim Crockett is widely criticized for using Ric Flair in a series of matches against mid-card talent like Brickhouse Brown and Brett Sawyer instead of having him feud with one of the few other big names left in JCP like Jay Youngblood or Wahoo McDaniel...fans agree with the critics as TV ratings and attendance remain well below what they were a year ago</p><p> </p><p>

...as of late 1983 I've decided that Jim Crockett Promotions, while still in business, is no longer a major promotion...JCP is a regional promotion shown only on local TV...outside of a few loyal diehards like Wahoo McDaniel and Jay Youngblood, as well as Ric Flair swinging through to earn some beer money when he's home on break from touring with NJPW, there's not much going on there...JCP will now be lumped into the "news and notes" section with everyone else...along with the NWA World title and RCW, the WWF and GCW are the only promotions that will get their own separate entries as there is, for now, only the "big 2" in American wrestling</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><em><span style="font-size:8px;"> </span></em><em><span style="font-size:8px;"><strong>(Since the in-game awards went almost exclusively to Japanese promotions, I'll do my own set of end of year awards)</strong></span></em><em><span style="font-size:8px;"> </span></em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">1983 End of Year Awards:</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<em>Wrestler of the Year:</em></p><p> </p><p>

Winner: "Wildfire" Tommy Rich - Tommy Rich had the biggest impact on North American pro wrestling in 1983...after a successful heel turn and tag-team run alongside Austin Idol in Georgia, he jumped to the WWF, won the world title in his second match, ran off a series of high profile title defenses against the likes of Bob Backlund, Roddy Piper, Jake Roberts, Larry Zbyszko, Blackjack Mulligan, Tully Blanchard, Gino Hernandez and Greg Valentine...his tag team with Andre the Giant became one of the most over acts ever in wrestling and as far as the duos match quality...</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="w7zvKDD.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/w7zvKDD.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Runner-Up: Wahoo McDaniel - Wahoo was a workhorse in 1983, wrestling 148 matches (98-42-8) for 4 different companies...he held major titles in two of them, the AWA World title and the NWA United States Heavyweight title (JCP)...he wrestled Dusty Rhodes to a double DQ in SWCW in a MOTY candidate (99)</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<em>Promotion of the Year:</em></p><p> </p><p>

Winner - World Wrestling Federation - Hands down it was the WWF taking the prize in '83...the WWF grew to cult size and locked up some of the top wrestlers under the age of 35 in the US to exclusive deals including: Tommy Rich, Roddy Piper, Tully Blanchard, Greg Valentine and Larry Zbyszko...despite losing the TV ratings battle to GCW, the WWF is by far the most popular promotion in the US</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Runner-Up - Georgia Championship Wrestling - GCW weathered the storm after losing several top stars to the WWF and consistently put on quality shows...thanks largely to being aired Saturdays at 6:05pm on the largest national cable network, WTBS, <strong><em>World Championship Wrestling</em></strong> is the highest rated TV show in America, setting a record with 2.6 million viewers for an episode in October...despite both men being nearly 40, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and longtime heel Ole Anderson stepped up as the top babyfaces...Adonis and Ventura were the best heel tag team in the country...having the best and most well respected announcer in the country in Gordon Solie helps</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="NvntaI9.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/NvntaI9.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="J5UKjGU.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/J5UKjGU.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

<strong><em><span style="font-size:8px;">Top stars came and went...but World Championship Wrestling is still the top wrestling show in the land</span></em></strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Biggest Surprise of 1983: Tommy Rich winning the WWF World title in his second match with the company</p><p> </p><p>

Saddest Moment of 1983: The death of Randy Savage</p><p> </p><p>

Tag Team of the Year: The East-West Connection (Adrian Adonis & Jesse Ventura)</p><p> </p><p>

Rookie of the Year: Although Rick Rude had a better record in JCP, Donnie Texas wins rookie of the year, wrestling for the AWA Light Heavyweight title several times, being a top star in River City Wrestling, working with 18yo Mick Foley in Foley's debut match and main eventing an AWA On Tour show against Wahoo McDaniel</p><p> </p><p>

Biggest Disappointment: (Tie) Hulk Hogan's title run...ever since appearing as "Thunderlips" in 1982's Rocky III, Hogan was assumed to be the next big star in pro wrestling, but his 4-month AWA title run was mediocre at best...some of the blame goes to the booking, but Hogan failed to connect with the fans the way another blond-haired All-American babyface champion did over in the WWF...</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="hZE6vqk.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/hZE6vqk.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

Wow wait a minute. Turner cancels the highest rated wrestling program in the country? Did the Time Warner deal early without AOL driving that entity? That is a strange deal for them to drop wrestling when they were so pro the wrestling industry.

Glad too see Bockwinkle get a well deserved title win in the ring instead of given to him by Stanley Blackburn.

The NWA promoters must be being blackmailed to allow their title to remain on Hercules Ayala....who? I would have loved to have been in the meeting that made that decision.

Thanks for following...

- Yeah it was a surprise to see GCW get dropped...I'll be adding that to the narrative, and it has an impact on the future of pro wrestling

- Bockwinkel was a great wrestler, but with WWF pulling away with hot young stars just entering their primes like Tommy Rich, Tully Blanchard and Roddy Piper, is a 49yo champion and figurehead the way to go? We'll see how they do

- The Hercules Ayala title run is surprising...I could see a huge international star like Antonio Inoki or Mil Mascaras but Ayala is barely at 40-45 popularity outside of Puerto Rico

I agree that Nick being champion at this point other than transitional isn’t ideal. But having Wahoo as champion wasn’t going anywhere either. Nick was such a great interview though and Verne wouldn’t let the poor man win the belt in the ring. Even after Satan Hanson’s walkout in 86, they just awarded the title to him. It happened to often in the real AWA. It would have been interesting if a Magnum TA had gotten the AWA Title, maybe there is hope in your universe for something like that.

<p>Well, considering JR and Cornette had to talk Watts into turning Mr. Wrestling 2 heel instead of Magnum, which was his breakthrough program AND Dusty isn't booking JCP, Magnum not being a thing is easy to see. So much had to go right for Magnum to explode on the scene, that any one of them not happening could have rendered him a midcard nobody.</p><p> </p><p>

I think that Black Saturday thing was a narrative as Al had several in to obliterate Georgia in the 2013 version of the mod, and most of those got carried over into the updated 16 version. They probably had enough money to not go out of business, which is why they're still alive at this point.</p>

<p>Looks like GCW bounced back quickly from losing Turner's TV shows - will be interesting to see if any promotion ever gets that TV slot in the future. </p><p> </p><p>

Ayala being NWA champion for such a long time could be kind of an early death of the NWA. Especially since it seems like Georgia, which is the premier NWA promotion at the moment seems to be ignoring it. </p><p> </p><p>

Piper-Rich as the New Megapowers? I can dig it. In a weird way, it's almost as charismatic.</p>
