CZCW Tonight

Friday 19th February 2016

Phoenix, Arizona

Attendance: 3400

The first thing of note this evening is that there is a new face at the announce desk. Sitting next to The Guru and Cliff Anderson is one of the premier announcers in the world – former SWF lead announcer and head booker Peter Michaels. Anderson introduces the new man in the booth, and we're off to the first match without further delay, as is customary here in CZCW.

American Flash v. Chet Chavez

Flash worked really hard to get the crowd interested in this contest, but to very little avail. Chavez evoked very little reaction from them at all, and despite Flash's efforts, he dragged the match down, being off his game, and gassing very early on. Neither man's gimmick seems to be playing well with the crowd, and it could be time for some changes. Flash obviously benefits from his tag partnership with Matt Sparrow, and is more exposed in singles competition. Nevertheless, Flash puts Chavez away with a High Velocity Senton, in what appeared to be an inevitable result.

Winner: American Flash (D-)

Britney Hollywood comes down to the ring, surprisingly on her own, and collects a microphone.

“I'll keep this pretty simple, babes – Willow, send your man out here so I can talk to him.”

IPxb04q.jpg

Greg Black makes his way out to the ring with a curious look on his face. Like the rest of us he doesn't really know when Britney might have to say beyond last week's little spiel.

M31wwgr.jpg

He doesn't find out though, as just as he grabs the ropes to lever himself up onto the ring apron, he is attacked from behind by Al Coleman, who proceeds to beat him down, focusing particularly on Black's chest, and putting the final touches on his assault by driving a steel chair into those now-injured ribs, leaving Black lying on the floor in agony as the doctor comes out to attend to him, closely accompanied by Willow.

Britney and Willow face off angrily as they pass in the aisle, and Britney has a nasty smirk on her face as she taunts her fellow manager, but the microphones aren't close enough to pick up what might have been said. (D+)

Jackpot Jordan v. Fernandes Franklin

Slightly better received than the opener, and a slightly better contest, too. Certainly more evenly matched. Both men look as though they are enjoying themselves out there, and at times they get caught up in a game of one-upmanship in who can cheat the better – Jordan uses the ropes a couple of times to assist with pinfall attempts, and is spotted by Pee-wee Germaine, and Franklin responds by trying to use them for additional leverage in a figure four submission attempt, but is also caught in the act.

Jordan is the more fired up as the match progresses though, no doubt still aware of his missing tag partner, and is the one who finishes things around fourteen minutes in with a Cash In neck-breaker that Franklin can't kick out of.

Winner: Jackpot Jordan (D)

We cut to a backstage area where Lance Trueman is awaiting the cue to talk to us.

“Everyone is asking about me and Storm Spillane. Why are you at each others' throats? What's he done to get you riled up? I hear it all the time.

“I had thought that the questions might go away. After all, it's a matter between him and me. But no. You all want to hear what the issue is.

“Well it's pretty straightforward, folks.

“Storm Spillane thinks he's the best thing out there. That he's the next big thing in CZCW. None of you see this, because he goes out there and pretends that he doesn't need to be a flamboyant character and interact with you all; that all the adulation and attention will naturally come his way, just because of what a great athlete he is.”

Trueman looks at the camera with disdain.

“Well it ain't so. Nobody replaces Lance Trueman as the one true star that the girls get behind. They might've made me change my name, but I'm still the California Love Machine whether that's what I'm officially called or not, and I know for sure that it ain't Spillane's name they're all screamin' when they see me in my glory – in the ring or out of it.

“So Spillane, you can back off and get yourself off my territory. Watch and learn, buddy, 'cos this man is the next big thing. You want to make more of it. Fine. We'll do it at CZCW Uprising. But unlike the ladies out there, you won't be screamin' my name, you'll be screamin' in pain!. (D)

Champagne Lover & Fox Mask v. Super Ninja & Dave Wallace

A decent match to showcase the two protagonists for the Coastal Zone title is marred by the obvious lack of co-ordination between Wallace and Ninja, who just don't seem to be able to gel together in this bout.

Lover and Fox Mask dominate for large stretches and seem to be the pairing that is better suited together, despite them having been rivals more often than not. Both also still seem to be learning from watching each other closely – Lover, undoubtedly the star of the match, does a great imitation of Fox Mask's best Fox Hunter finisher, which only fails to win the match because Wallace is too close to the ropes, whilst Fox Mask apes Lover's Lover Stunner, which gets a long two count from Germaine.

Somehow, though, it is Ninja and Wallace that manage to fight through their communication difficulties to pick up the victory. A Ninja Strike on Lover is followed up by a very swift and tight cover that surprises the Coastal Zone Champion, and by a hair's breadth he's unable to beat the count of three that results. Ninja has a knowing look in his eyes as he backs off and celebrates understatedly with Wallace, with one eye on Lover for potential retribution.

Winners: Super Ninja & Dave Wallace (C-)

Overall Show Grade: D+

Author's Notes

3/3 for BHK1978

2/3 for michgcs

1/3 for WilburTrey

Super Ninja needs a little bit of positive momentum heading into the title match... At this point I can't afford for Lover to be burying everyone week-in, week-out ala Triple H, even if he is "the greatest wrestler in the world"...

<p><strong>Saturday 20th February 2016</strong></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="UTmpDDF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/UTmpDDF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

The backstage environment in CZCW is something of a mix of positive and negative energy. You have the likes of Fox Mask, a real stand-up guy backstage and something of a mentor to guys like Bullseye (which is being played out in our shows), Fernandes Franklin, and Simon Waves, passing on tips on psychology in the ring that make all their matches better for it or hints on how to get the audience to respond better to their promos and interviews. At the other end of the scale you get guys being particularly selfish around others, criticising their colleagues abilities, or otherwise getting on the nerves of other wrestlers or the backstage crew, those who seem to turn up late now and then with the flimsiest of excuses, or who pull tasteless ribs backstage that someone has to sort out afterwards.</p><p> </p><p>

Some of it is self-policing, as there is an informal “wrestler's court” where the most respected members of our crew run the rule over minor infractions, leaving the booker and owner only to have to make decisions about more serious offences, or ones that need an outside hand to be involved.</p><p> </p><p>

Every time you bring someone new into the locker room, the environment changes slightly – some are good influences on their colleagues, some very bad influences. Friendships and rivalries develop. </p><p> </p><p>

So when you bring someone new in that had previously worked with people you already have on the roster, their existing relationship also has an impact on those around them. In this case, Peter Michaels and The Guru have known each other for a long time – Michaels was the booker of SWF during the period that The Guru was under contract there.</p><p> </p><p>

That is some cause for disquiet between the two. The Guru still, some seven years after leaving SWF, has something of a chip on his shoulder about the way that he was booked by Michaels back then, thinking that his managerial role was being sidelined by a greater emphasis on pretty girls as valets to the top wrestlers with rather less in the way of actual skills. Whether this was actually Michaels' intent (or indeed even something that was within his remit, given the control that Richard Eisen is known to hold over the booking process) is unclear, but there is some residual tension and it is clear that the two men don't like each other.</p><p> </p><p>

As they are going to be sitting in pretty close proximity over coming months at the announce table, this could potentially be a problem. Whilst Michaels is undoubtedly one of the very best announcers around, we can't afford to upset a guy like The Guru – he's one of our most likeable guys backstage, and really puts an effort into making it a harmonious working environment. He's very knowledgeable of the industry and adds a fair deal to the announce desk, as well as being particularly good at amusing us with impressions of his colleagues. Also, his contract is coming up for renewal in the very near future, and you wouldn’t want to upset him to the extent where he refuses to re-sign, and we are scrambling around for a replacement at short notice.</p><p> </p><p>

Fortunately, both men seem to be treating things very professionally, and nothing untoward has occurred as yet. There's very little chemistry between any of the announce team, and it may be that the longer term move will be for The Guru to be pulled off the desk and moved back into a managerial role (where he would also be excellent), but in order to do that we would need a replacement colour man, and then time for some rapport to build up between Mr Cliff and Michaels before a new colour guy is introduced... decisions, decisions.</p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile, rumours abound that TCW could be in trouble again, as recent shows have not met expectations...</p>

<strong>Jimmy Marvel v. Simon Waves</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

A thoroughly acceptable enough opener here, almost entirely by dint of Marvel's efforts. The crowd weren't all that interested though, as Waves really hasn't shown anything to date that would indicate that he was likely to overcome his opponent here. Marvel finishes things with his jawbreaker/lariat sequence at around the twelve minute mark. </p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Jimmy Marvel (D+)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Backstage, Jackpot Jordan and Jonnie Perez are chatting quietly in a corner. They break apart and go their separate ways, with Jordan coming over to the camera to quickly note that Jonnie has agreed to fill in for Jake Idol as Jackpot's tag partner at CZCW Uprising, where they will once again challenge for the Coastal Zone Tag Titles held by Wild Cats. <span style="color:#000080;">(D)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p>

<strong>Fox Mask v. Lance Trueman</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Things pick up here in terms of audience interest – partly because of the more even contest, but also partly because they expect something to happen. As predicted, Bullseye is at ringside to continue learning from Fox Mask, though if anything he's a bit of a distraction for the veteran.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="TCLwUXm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/TCLwUXm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="eAwRzZ2.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/eAwRzZ2.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

After around fifteen minutes of some exciting back-and-forth, Storm Spillane makes his appearance, timing things nicely so that referee Pee-wee Germaine is distracted checking up on Fox Mask, who had wiped out on an attempted plancha to the outside when Trueman evaded the dive. Trueman comes over to confront the interloper, and Spillane drops back off the apron, pulling Trueman's head down sharply to catch his throat hard across the top rope. Trueman staggers back, and Bullseye seems to think this is an ideal opportunity to assist his mentor, and aims a huge forearm at Trueman, but completely misses, and accidentally catches the recovering Fox Mask with it instead as he rushed Trueman from behind.</p><p> </p><p>

Trueman takes the opportunity to hit his LAX Departure on the dazed Fox Mask, and covers quickly to pick up the win.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Lance Trueman (C-)</span></p><p> </p><p>

Trueman disappears quickly to avoid any further attacks by Spillane, whilst Fox Mask can be seen being helped up by Bullseye, who is apologising profusely.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="UTmpDDF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/UTmpDDF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

And we're backstage again, this time with Coastal Zone Champion Champagne Lover.</p><p> </p><p>

“Ahh. Mister Super Ninja. If that was the limit of your surprises last week, then the greatest wrestler in the world has little to fear in his defence of the Coastal Zone title on Monday at CZCW Uprising. Your supposed experience from all around the world means little to an international superstar such as myself – your “ninja strike” merely a momentary lapse in my concentration at a moment when it mattered very little.</p><p> </p><p>

“After all, what is a tag match where nothing is at stake to a man like myself? Merely an opportunity to see what you have to offer. To test your strengths and weaknesses ahead of times when there is a prize to be fought for. And let me tell you: I saw plenty of weaknesses that I will be able to exploit on Monday.</p><p> </p><p>

“Perhaps we will see how your old body can cope with the full onslaught of the Champagne Lover when it comes to a bout that actually matters. I see that you hide your face behind that black mask, but surely it is only to disguise your wrinkle lines, your grey hair and your general decrepitude. It is a disguise that is easily penetrated when you face the greatest wrestler in the world.</p><p> </p><p>

“You talk about fear of the ninja, but there is no fear here. I relax. My championship, it is safe with you as my challenger.” <span style="color:#000080;">©</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Super Ninja & Steve Flash v. Wild Cats (El Jaguar/Tigre)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

For the second week in a row, Super Ninja is unable to get on the same page as his tag partner, and it weakens the reason for Steve Flash being here – to pass on some of his vast knowledge of how to work a variety of styles to others of the roster. It also doesn't help here that the two veterans are definitely past their best. Ninja in particular is having something of a bad day.</p><p> </p><p>

This makes the tag champs look pretty good, as it turns out. Their communication and co-ordination is smooth, and they demonstrate a couple of nice double-team moves that bring them close to victory. Part-way through, Jake Idol joins the announce table to further scout the Wild Cats, and notes that he's had plenty of discussions with Jackpot Jordan, and he's happy for Jonnie Perez to take his place temporarily, to win the Coastal Zone tag belts</p><p> </p><p>

In the end, experience wins the day though. Flash is able to make the most of his opportunities in the ring to keep the Wild Cats grounded and isolates Tigre from his tag partner for an extended period, meaning that when Ninja gets back into the ring he has a much weakened opponent to face, and surgically picks out the moment to hit the Ninja Strike that keeps Tigre down for a three count whilst Flash prevents El Jaguar from breaking up the pin.</p><p>

</p><p><span style="color:#000080;">

Winners: Super Ninja & Steve Flash (D+)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Overall Show Grade: D+</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">Author's Notes</span></p><p> </p><p>

Thanks very much for all the predictions. Just as well I wasn't able to post the show yesterday as originally planned!</p><p> </p><p>

Everybody scored two from three on this show, with ink625 debuting by uniquely correctly picking Lance Trueman to get the victory over Fox Mask, but also being the only predictor to incorrectly select the tag champions in the main event.</p><p> </p><p>

Next to come is the Big monthly show CZCW Uprising, with a bigger card, which I hope to post tomorrow at some point.</p>

Lover has been dismissive of Ninja's threat, though, indicating that he doesn't have what it takes to dethrone the champ, and that he hides his face behind the mask to prevent us from seeing how old he has become, which will be a big disadvantage against a champion in his prime.</p><p> </p><p> To crown a new contender for the title, we will once again have a four-way affair. Featuring this time will be former challenger Frankie Perez, who the champion has called out for his commitments to other companies meaning that he doesn't deserve a shot, the ever-ready Dave Wallace, Seven-time Coastal Zone Champion Fox Mask, and the talented North Dakotan Matt Sparrow. Any one of the four could be the next to get a title shot, so this bears close watching.</p><p> </p><p> Recent developments between Al Coleman and his former manager Willow have led to the next match, which sees Willow's new client, Greg Black, ready to take Coleman on once again. #1 contendership match:</p><p>

Fox Mask vs. <strong>Dave Wallace</strong> vs. Frankie Perez vs. Matt Sparrow</p><p>

<em>Frankie Perez seems to be the consensus pick. Mask has his own storyline developing but I guess if he wins Bullseye can cost him the title match. You called Wallace ever-ready so let's give him a shot.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Champagne Lover ©</strong> vs. Super Ninja</p><p>

<em>Is a proper heel turn incoming for the Champ? If so, I can see Super Ninja being one of the few top guys to chase the title for a while</em></p>

<strong>Fernandes Franklin and Notorious (Miguel Rivera & Carlos Barrera) v. American Flash, Waylon Walls, and Jimmy Marvel</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

As usual we get straight into the action here in CZCW. There isn't much build to this particular match, being more a way to get the men onto the card, given that three have tag partners that are otherwise involved in other matched.</p><p> </p><p>

A good mix of styles, but not really the greatest flow to the bout, with the Notorious brawlers and Walls being limited to their one style, but Marvel, particularly, does his level best to keep things together and looks the main star out there. It is decided with Walls and Barrera sidelined brawling outside the ring, when American Flash hits a lovely shooting star press on Franklin to take him out of action as well, leaving Marvel and Rivera one-on-one. Marvel hits the Marvel Breaker and there's nobody to break up the pin.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winners: American Flash, Waylon Walls & Jimmy Marvel (D+)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Lance Trueman v. Storm Spillane</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Spillane looks mildly amused and a little confused as the introductions are made, still trying to fathom exactly what he might have done to give Trueman the impression that he was particularly after the limelight that Trueman considered to be his spot. Trueman just looks back with deep intensity, ready to wipe any sign of a smile from Spillane's face, and when the bells rings he's quickly out of the blocks, levelling his opponent with a hard clothesline immediately.</p><p> </p><p>

And that sets the tone for most of the bout. Trueman is intense and determined, and he hits hard, keeping Spillane grounded for a lot of the time and emphasising his dominance. Unlike previous matches where he has taken time to play to the crowd, here he is focused on making sure he makes no mistakes in putting Spillane in his place, yet it's clear that the crowd area still invested in his moves, even without him trying to be flashy about it.</p><p> </p><p>

Spillane works hard to stay with Trueman's level of intensity, but he isn't quite able to manage it, and although Trueman is struggling to maintain his pace by the end of the contest, he's able to set Spillane up for the LAX Departure after around fourteen minutes where he was largely the dominant man, which he hits precisely and enables him to take the three count.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Lance Trueman (D+)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Trueman looks down at Spillane's body post-match, and nods with satisfaction, as though finally content with the outcome.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Wild Cats (Tigre & El Jaguar) © v. Jackpot Jordan & Jonnie Perez</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Given that Jordan and Perez have never teamed together before, this is a much closer contest than you might expect, despite the fact that they seem to have very little chemistry together. You get the well-known high flying from the tag champions, and their slick combos that have earned then a good reputation both here and in CILL, but you also get solid work from the challengers. Perez is prepared to thrown his body around just as much as El Jaguar, and Jordan mixes up his styles to ensure that he and Perez are never in much danger of getting pinned early, but often you sense that he was supposed to be there to take a tag from his partner when Perez gets himself into trouble, and the timing just isn't right.</p><p> </p><p>

Yet it really is touch and go as the match progresses as to who is on top, and the finale comes when El Jaguar is being manhandled by Jordan and goes for a tag to Tigre, only to accidentally catch referee Pee-wee Germaine hard with a forearm, which puts him down. </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="CqRq3Bd.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/CqRq3Bd.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

This is the ideal moment for Jake Idol to run in and pull Tigre off the apron and lay into him with boots, whilst Jordan and Perez make the most of the unexpected advantage and spend a good couple of minutes double teaming Jaguar in the middle of the ring. At the first sign that Germaine is reviving, Perez shakes him to make the count and Idol makes himself scarce, as Jordan covers for what is an easy three, despite the slowness of the count, and the scratch team take the tag championships from the established duo in something of a surprise.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><p><span style="color:#000080;">

Winners: Jackpot Jordan and Jonnie Perez (D)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Al Coleman and Britney Hollywood are backstage waiting for their camera time. Coleman looks particularly pleased with himself, for some reason.</p><p> </p><p>

“Well, Greg Black, I guess since I haven't heard anything from you, and you need Willow's help, then you must have been the weaker, less charismatic partner in High Concept for all those years. After all, where's Benny Benson now when you need him, eh? </p><p> </p><p>

“Still, I obviously got the better of the bargain, Black. You can keep Willow for all I care – Britney's a much better manager for me, and we can actually co-ordinate things together, instead of the complete mess things used to be.</p><p> </p><p>

“In the meantime, just be prepared to be lying on your back staring at the lights, kiddo; it's the inevitable outcome when you're facing the wrestling machine that is Al Coleman.” <span style="color:#000080;">(D)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Greg Black (w/Willow) v. Al Coleman (w/Britney Hollywood)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

This is a bit of an unusual “fight” if you can call it that. Black appears to have paid absolutely no attention to Coleman's earlier taunt and is treating it as just another match, countering and transitioning between holds without any noticeable emotion, whilst Coleman is equally fluent in what turns out to be something of a mat wrestling clinic, but his moves have much more anger and venom behind them, wrenching hard when he attempts submissions to try and get some sort of reaction out of Black. There's still a lot of mis-communication going on between these two, throughout the fight though.</p><p> </p><p>

It's Coleman who changes to a more brawly style, largely in frustration at the lack of reaction he is getting out of his opponent, and paintbrushing Black with a slap just to try and get a response. But things never really take off, as just as things are starting to heat up, with Coleman in a tight anaconda choke hold that Black has cinched in, Britney leaps up onto the apron and starts hammering Black with the heel of her shoe to try and get him to release the hold. Pee-wee Germaine tries to get her to stop and to leave the ring, but he is bowled over by Willow hurtling across the ring to attack Britney. Black hangs onto his hold, but Germaine is now busy with the two managers and doesn't see Coleman desperately tapping out, and with no response from the ref, Coleman blacks out. Black releases him and lets him slip to the floor unconscious, but is pushed into the referee by the cat-fighting women, knocking him over, and Germaine decides he's had enough of things and throws it out as a double DQ, much to everybody's frustration.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Nobody. (D+)</span></p><p> </p><p>

Black and Willow leave with a phlegmatic shrug, knowing that they had done enough to win, whilst Britney checks up on the still-dazed Coleman.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

#1 Contendership Match</p><p>

<strong>Fox Mask v. Dave Wallace v. Frankie Perez v. Matt Sparrow</strong></p><p><strong>

</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

It's a good job that Peter Michaels is on commentary for this one, as I don't think that Cliff Anderson could have kept up with the pace of the match by himself. It's fast and frenetic, and unusually for four-way matches, we don't see extended periods of two pairs of wrestlers facing off. Something always seems to be going on, and when it works it looks super, but when it works less well it appears something of an uncoordinated mess. All four men manage to hit their regular finishers at some point during the first ten minutes, but with others on hand to break up pinfalls, nobody is able to get an edge for long enough to be able to get a three count.</p><p> </p><p>

For all the energy in the ring, it's a bit of a surprise when the end comes via submission, though perhaps not in terms of who the victor is.</p><p> </p><p>

With Fox Mask and Matt Sparrow both down on the outside, Dave Wallace tries to launch a springboard DDT at Frankie Perez, but Perez is alive to the threat, and rolls through the attempt rather than being dragged down to the mat. Wallace goes down hard on his head, and Perez quickly shifts his body position to lock in the P-Clutch, and although Sparrow suddenly becomes alert to the danger that the end of the match is coming, and tries hard to get back into the ring to break up the hold, he's held back around the ankle by Fox Mask, who seems unaware that there is a finishing manoeuvre being applied, and he doesn't get there in time to stop Wallace from tapping.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Frankie Perez (C-)</span></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><p><strong>

Champagne Lover (c ) v. Super Ninja</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Both men start slowly and cagily, belying their words from earlier in the week that they had their own advantages and knew how to use them. Ninja in particular is careful to avoid getting himself caught in a position for a Lover Stunner, and worms his way out of a couple of grabs from Lover that look like they are setting up for his usual finisher.</p><p> </p><p>

The feeling-out approach breaks down eventually though, with Lover breaking out some of the more entertaining aerial moves he has picked up over the years as soon as he is able to get Ninja grounded for long enough to take advantage. He whiffs on a top rope missile drop kick, enabling Ninja to recover, but not long afterwards put together a Thezs Press/Elbow drop combination that gets a long two count.</p><p> </p><p>

Lover doesn't have it all his own way though, and Ninja is not without his own successes in between times. An abdominal stretch has Lover gasping for breath, and when Lover looks about to break free, Ninja lifts him into a powerful German suplex instead, which knocks the wind completely out of Lover and leads to a close pinfall.</p><p> </p><p>

But as the match wears into the fifteenth minute you can sense that Ninja is tiring. He fails to evade a flying forearm, and as he starts to get up from that he is in prime position for the Lover Stunner and isn't quick enough to see it coming this time. Lover executes it neatly and retains the title with the subsequent crossbody press and hooked leg.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Winner: Champagne Lover ©</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="OKvFwS8.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OKvFwS8.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Lover has little time to celebrate though – as soon as his arm is lifted into the air by Pee-wee Germaine, he is attacked from behind by Frankie Perez, sending him to the canvas. Perez lays in with big boots to the champion, and only relents as he is being pulled away by a posse of zebras and road agents. <span style="color:#000080;">(D+)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#000080;">Overall Show Grade: (C-)</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">Author's Notes</span></p><p>

Thanks very much for your picks. WilburTrey and BHK1978 came out on top with 4/6 (with identical selections), whilst Spirophore, michgcs and ink625 all picked up 3/6 all getting the 6-man tag and the main event correct, but also each correctly identifying one other win (and a different one each). Spirophore was the only one predictor to pick a tag title change.</p><p> </p><p>

michgcs - I'm playing with no faces or heels (as CZCW is set up to do by default) but clearly to be able to develop characters you need some sort of traits and conflicts to write about, so there will be heelish attributes coming through - as Champion, Champagne Lover is in the best position to demonstrate those, but, as BHK1978 noted in his comments, Al Coleman is probably the most heelish character at the moment (and that's a feud that continues for another month <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> ).</p>

<p>Damn I missed the predictions. Was flying to Hawaii yesterday so didn’t see the show was up. Good show btw, looks like you kept everyone guessing pretty good. </p><p> </p><p>

Of course I would have gotten 6 for 6 so just add that to my totals <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Thursday 4th March</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="UTmpDDF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/UTmpDDF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Three things on my mind this week.</p><p> </p><p>

Firstly, the decision to move CZCW Tonight! to Saturdays was not taken lightly, but for us to be able to get the most out of one of our better known stars, it was the only realistic move to make. He is now available to be able to provide some form of build-up to the title match at Spring Break Bash. If nothing else, we can at least try to get him some momentum with the fans. It was clear from Monday's Uprising event that the contendership bout lost a little lustre because of the fact that Frankie had not been around on the weekly shows.</p><p> </p><p>

Secondly is bolstering the backstage staffing. Pee-wee Germaine is a wonderful guy, and doesn't need to be working in pro wrestling, from what I hear, but he isn't the best referee in the world and we need to upgrade that area of our product. He is, however, a stalwart of CZCW and has been here for many years supporting the company, and largely on his own as a referee, which means he has been a key part of the successful run so far. So when his contract came due for renewal, there were two things to consider – does he still add value to CZCW events, and if not, what do we want to do about replacing him.</p><p> </p><p>

It was a close run thing, but given his years of service it was felt that we needed to retain him for a while longer, and have extended his contract for another nine months, to see how things play out. He was happy to sign the new deal. </p><p> </p><p>

However, we have also signed up a second referee to provide both support for Germaine and to act as a benchmark. Matthew White has been out of the business since leaving NOTBPW back in 2012, and was very interested in joining CZCW. From old TV tapings, he appears to be a cut above Germaine, which can only help the matches we put on, but we'll have to see whether he has retained those skills during his lay-off.</p><p> </p><p>

The final area to talk about is new signings for the roster. Whilst we are looking at volume down the road, the key thing at the moment is to get the top of the card filled with wrestlers who are known in the South West and who fit in with the style of wrestling we put on. To that extent we have feelers out at the moment with a couple of veteran cruiserweight-style guys who we think will add to the shows. Time will tell whether they sign or not.</p>

And welcome to a new night for our show as well. From now on you can expect to see our weekly shows on a Saturday night instead of a Friday night, though there is no change to our major monthly shows.</p><p> </p><p> As usual, the show will be packed with high-flying action, and includes a defence of the Coastal Zone Xtreme Championship. Jonnie Perez might be one half of the new Tag Title holders, but he's also the Xtreme Title holder too, and he makes a defence tonight against Storm Spillane. Spillane, of course, is fresh off a long-running dispute with Lance Trueman, but this now appears to have abated following Trueman's decisive win at CZCW Uprising on Monday. Spillane clearly feels ready for a new challenge here!</p><p> </p><p> Speaking of Trueman, he and tag partner Fernandes Franklin will also be in action this evening, as they take on the duo of Miguel Rivera and Carlos Barrera. Notorious came up on the losing end of a six-man tag alongside Franklin on Monday, so perhaps they feel it was the Going Coastal man who was to blame for the defeat!</p><p> </p><p> Coastal Zone Champion Champagne Lover is expected to be on hand to discuss his title defence from Monday, and will no doubt have words for Frankie Perez, who interrupted the post-match celebrations with a hefty beating for the champ. And the defeated warrior in that title bout, Super Ninja, will be taking on Greg Black, whose rivalry with Al Coleman is unlikely to be over given the DQ outcome of their meeting at Uprising.</p><p> </p><p> Come and join us for loads of fun at CZCW Tonight! for our new regular slot on a Saturday night.</p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Card for predictions:</p><p> </p><p> Coastal Zone Xtreme Championship:</p><p> Jonnie Perez (c ) vs. Storm Spillane</p><p> </p><p> Going Coastal vs. Notorious</p><p> </p><p> Greg Black vs. Super Ninja</p>
