Mature Themes / Language?

Recommended Posts

So I'm writing something kinda like Lucha Underground in regards to the cinematic, movie-like presentation that they go for. However, the writing will be far more grounded in reality, with a focus on gritty and realistic storylines. As such, I wanted to just check what the policy is on aspects like mature themes and colourful language?

I realise that the overall forum policy is that things should be PG, is there any exception ever? Can I put a disclaimer at the start of each post? I don't wanna end up breaking rules, so I figured best to ask :)

One rule I follow is that if cursing is a character trait, say for example Stone Cold Steve Austin, I'll do some cursing. I try to limit it as much as possible in my dynasties, but sometimes it's just a characteristic of a worker. I can't really think of any Lucha Underground wrestlers who have that as a character trait.

If you are going to use swears, then either do something like this:

I'm going to kick his a**!

or try to rephrase it like this:

I'm going to beat the living hell out of him!

I recall Adam saying that you are not allowed to use swear words or cover them up with letters like they do in comics. I got a warning a long time ago for doing that.

However, I have read others that have done the same thing over and over again and it would appear that nobody has said a word for them. I also had a mod threaten to ban me for calling someone a troll, but someone called me a piece of crap (but in another word) and that person was not banned.

The rule does not seem to be enforced or it is only enforced when certain posters are the offenders. Your guess is as good as mine in regards to this topic, the mods might enforce it or they may not. It depends on if you are on their good side I suppose.

Having used the odd bit of robust language myself in my shows, it helps to limit it to some degree of realism.

Having a swear word show up only rarely will heighten its impact when it is used. I think from memory I used 'filterable' words about 3 or 4 times in my SWF diary, which ran for 5 real world years. Whether the filter has now been changed so that those words would be excluded, I'm not sure, but they got through at the time.

But you can always substitute. Don't bother with a barrage of **** in your writing, because it breaks immersion, but you can do a verbal cut:

Michaels: Oh, so that's how you want to play it, Hitman? Well in that case you can-

Michaels unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse, drawing cheers from the watching fans even as Hart tried to break free of security and get back in the ring.

Ross: Well folks, I apologise for Shawn Michaels' language, but passions are running high here in the WWF!

or

Sting snapped, and hurled himself at Flair. Taking their cue from their leader, Pillman and the Steiners launched themselves at the rest of the Horsemen, a wild brawl between the competitors spilling out of the ring and into the crowd as security tried to intervene. Eventually Flair and Sting were separated, and as Sting was shepherded back to the dressing room, Flair could be heard screaming vile insults and demanding vengeance even without the microphone he'd dropped when Sting attacked.

That may not always work, but there are definitely ways of making it clear that things just went from PG to R, even if this is generally a PG-13 board at most <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

As for mature themes... I wouldn't advocate having someone doing something patently illegal clear and in view of the 'cameras', but it depends what you want to do. If one of your workers is meant to be a criminal, then acting like one to some degree makes sense, but actually pulling out a knife and using it during a show? Probably too far. If you have specific ideas you want to discuss, maybe raise them in here and we can give an idea of how they're likely to be received.

Again, though, use cuts: Have the worker consider doing something illegal/wrong, or show them having obviously done it - walking away from someone who's lying in a red puddle, for example - but if the act itself is likely to be graphic, then write around it. Think about the stuff that DX and Steve Austin got up to in the late 90s, and you're probably on about the right track for what'll be passable on the boards.

Its a very mixed bag. I know there have been some leeway in the dynasty forums as far as the occasional curse words. I've seen others do it and as long as it fit in the correct context of an in character promo and not in the narration in itself it has flown.

I personally suggest using it sporadically like others have said. It has more meaning if only it gets by once in a while as opposed to every other word.

Check out my Herb Abrams UWF diary, more specifically anything involving Col DeBeers. I'm pretty sure the forum censors some stuff automatically, the N word for example. At least I don't recall censoring it myself.
