WWE: Relive, Rewrite, Redefine

Recommended Posts

In the annals of spacetime, there are eventualities that come to pass. Things that must be, always will be, and always have been. But imagine, if you will, the power to change all that. The power to alter the very fabric of being. What eventuality would you change? To have good ultimately triumph over evil? To have evil triumph over good? To stop the senseless deaths of millions with the senseless death of one? Would you even begin to fathom such power, such responsibility, or would you give it up willingly in the face of omnipotence?

Or would you just screw around and fix some wrestling stuff with it?

If you chose the latter, congratulations and welcome to this strange time machine of ours, where we have gone back to the dawn of sports entertainment, 1985, before the first Wrestlemania. Here, we will examine things as they could have been, but for a brief change of events. And with it, the dominos shall fall into place...

In other words, they screwed it up, and I can do it better.

(Please note that with this post, you will find updated listings of WWE/WWF champions. The entire title histories are listed beneath the current champion. The starting point champion (after some titles change hands) will be listed in red once we get to that point. Also with this post will be an easy link to the events I post. I am only going to be writing up major events, so there will be some title changes that occur in the intermediary. Those will be reflected on this page, and in the intermediary reports that will precede each major event.)

<p><em>On the Road to The War to Settle the Score</em></p><p> </p><p>

The long simmering feud between World Wrestling Federation Champion, Hulk Hogan, and the Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper, is seemingly about ready to explode. Centered around Hogan's mainstream appeal and his friendship with television star Mr. T, Piper's jealousy of Hogan and his desire to be World Champion appear at a boiling point. During a recent title defense by Hogan against Piper's cohort in crime, the Ace Cowboy Bob Orton, Piper attacked Hogan and drew Mr. T to his aide. This has let to a special challenge six man tag team match, with Mr. T teaming up with Hogan and the Superfly Jimmy Snuka against Piper, Orton and their other cohort in crime "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff.</p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile the WWF Women's Champion, Wendi Richter, has been safely taking on all comers, including the Fabulous Moolah's latest protege Leilani Kai. It was at a title defense against Kai, though, that Wendi was blindsided by a mysterious attacker, later announced to be the Sensational Sherri Martel. Wendi has agreed to put her belt on the line against Martel, but the Sensational One will have the wily Moolah in her corner.</p><p> </p><p>

After getting his hair partially shaved by Big John Studd and Ken Patera, the Eighth Wonder of the World has set his sights on revenge against Bobby Heenan's duo of destruction. First up, Andre will take on the former Olympic powerlifter, who has sworn to become to first man ever to pin the Giant in Madison Square Garden.</p><p> </p><p>

The young David Sammartino, along with his father Bruno, has been on a winning streak as of late. However that winning streak will come up against a loudmouth from San Francisco in the form of Brutus Beefcake, who has claimed David is nothing like his father, and that his father is a has been anyway. The two will square off to try and settle their feud as well.</p><p> </p><p>

In other action, Intercontinental Champion Greg "The Hammer" Valentine will defend his title against the Junkyard Dog. Newly crowned tag team champions The US Express will have their rematch against the North South Connection plus three other great undercard matches. All this will take place live on MTV...the War...to Settle the Score.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>I very nearly overlooked this diary because I saw "WWE" on it, thinking that it was more modern, but would have been willing to try to jump into it because it's Darbicus. But now that I see it's Darbicus doing some old school goodness, I'm here to bring my support!</p><p> </p><p>

Hogan, Snuka, and T - <em>lolHulkwins</em></p><p>

Wendi Richter - <em>We are still in the Rock 'n Wrestling days, so while I highly enjoy Sherri, I think Wendi and Cyndi keep this one locked down.</em></p><p>

Andre the Giant</p><p>

Greg Valentine - <em>JYD is very popular, but he's not "workhorse title" type. I thought about going DQ for the Dog, because this is the 80s, but I've gone with a lot of faces so far, so a heel needs a nice win.</em></p><p>

Brutus Beefcake - <em>Just don't give them like 15 minutes, please!</em></p><p>

US Express - <em>I could see this go either way, really. But I love me some Windham and Rotundo, so keep the belts.</em></p><p>

Chico Santana - <em>I don't remember off the top of my head if Jesse was calling him Chico yet or not, but you can make it happen either way!</em></p><p>

Rocky Johnson - <em>I love Matt Borne, but I don't think he's over enough to pick up a win like this. Pappy Rock takes it.</em></p><p>

Sheik and Volkoff - <em>But who will win the sing-off between Nikolai and Putski?!</em></p>

They isolate Garea, taking the veteran to their corner and working over his back, trying to set him up for the deadly Camel Clutch submission. A hot tag to Putski gets Blassie's boys on the defensive briefly, but it is an all too brief comeback, as Sheik catches Putski quickly with a hard atomic drop and then hooks him into the Camel Clutch, causing the submission before Garea can make the save.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winners by Submission: The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <em>Backstage we get an interview with "Mean" Gene Okerlund, talking with former Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana. Matt tried to keep things more mat-based, forcing Johnson to the ground and keeping him from using his fancy footwork and boxing skills to his advantage. Valentine though, in his usual way, approached things methodically, breaking down the Dog's defenses and focusing on the knee. But JYD kept trying to fight back, and eventually starting using his head...literally...delivering his signature headbutts to the champion. However Valentine's new manager, Jimmy Hart, proved invaluable to the champion, distracting the referee and allowing Valentine to hit JYD with a foreign object from his tights, tossing it out of the ring and scoring a three count. However at that point, Tito Santana came running out, informing the referee of the use of a foreign object and producing the foreign object on the floor. This causes the referee to reverse his decision, disqualifying Valentine and declaring JYD the winner, though Valentine still keeps the title.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Disqualification: Junkyard Dog</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>"The Eighth Wonder of the World" Andre the Giant vs. Ken Patera w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> After having his head partially shaved a few weeks prior by both Patera and Big John Studd, Andre the Giant was definitely out for revenge. He did manage some degree of offense at wearing down the giant after Big John Studd made an appearance, distracting Andre, but the Giant came back strong and finished off the former powerlifter with a huge double underhook suplex, getting the 1-2-3 and telling John Studd to watch out for the future.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by pinfall: Andre the Giant</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <em>Backstage we catch up with the other participants of our main event match tonight, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and his partners, Mr. T and Jimmy Snuka. That trend started to continue with this match, with Sherri Martel hitting several hard slams and suplexes to the champion and showing her little mercy. Wendi got her second wind though, the crowd rallying behind her, nearly getting the fall with a rollup from behind. As Moolah tried to interject herself into the match, Cyndi Lauper came around and attacked the former champion, resulting in a distraction for the referee. Wendi managed to get the ref's attention after seemingly having Sherri pinned after a hard bodyslam, but when she turned back around and went after the challenger, Martel tripped her up and pinned her jackknife style. Sherri used the middle rope for leverage unbeknownst to the referee, and got the quick three count, pulling off the upset and getting a new champion!</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by pinfall and NEW Ladies' World Champion: "Sensational" Sherri Martel</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Main Event</strong></p><p><strong> Hulk Hogan, Mr. T & "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka vs. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Cowboy" Bob Orton & "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> The goal of Team Piper was clear from the get-go: isolate the inexperienced Mr. T and try and embarrass the television star. Unfortunately for them Mr. T seemed up to the challenge, even catching the Hot Rod in an Airplane Spin at one point. The babyfaces seemed to have everything going there way, until an untimely missed cross body from Snuka on Orton sent the Superfly sprawling out to the floor. The heels then isolated Snuka, keeping sure to keep Hogan out of the match. The Fiji-born Superfly rallied late, tagging in Hogan who finally got his hands on Piper and started waylaying on him. Following another tag to Mr. T, Piper's crew seemed ready to be beaten, when the six-man tag turned into a near all out brawl. With the referee distracted by a brawl between Snuka and Orndorff, and Hogan down for the moment, Bob Orton came in and clubbed Mr. T in the back of the head with his cast. Piper used this to his advantage, sinching up on a small package on the TV star and scoring a quick three count to get out of their with a huge win for his side.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winners by pinfall: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Cowboy" Bob Orton & "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote>

<p><em>The Road to Wrestlemania...</em></p><p> </p><p>

The biggest spectacular in the history of sports entertainment is set to take place on April 1st inside the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden. The pomp and circumstance of Wrestlemania! Headlining the card will be the World Wrestling Federation Champion Hulk Hogan, defending his title against the Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper. Piper and Hogan have been at each other's throats for what feels like an eternity, and with both men putting it all on the line at Wrestlemania, the end may finally be near for their huge conflict. In Piper's corner will be his trusty bodyguard, the Ace Cowboy Bob Orton. Meanwhile in Hogan's corner will be television star and friend Mr. T. Compounding it all will be the special guest enforcer of the match, Muhammad Ali!</p><p> </p><p>

On the undercard, Andre the Giant will try and finish his revenge and determine who the true giant of professional wrestling is, taking on Bobby Heenan's charge Big John Studd. This is no ordinary match, as Heenan has made an enticing offer to Andre. If Andre can slam Big John Studd in 20 minutes or less, than he will win $25,000. If Andre fails to slam the big man, than Andre has agreed to retire from the sport of professional wrestling forever!</p><p> </p><p>

Following the controversial loss at The War to Settle the Score, Wendi Richter has challenged the new Ladies Wrestling Champion, Sherri Martel, to a rematch at Wrestlemania. As was the case last time, The Fabulous Moolah may prove a decisive distraction for Richter, which has led to the championship committee of the WWF to state that if Moolah interferes in the match, she will be banned from ever challenging for the Ladies Wrestling Championship for life plus 10 years!</p><p> </p><p>

Wrestlemania will also witness the return of a wrestling legend, as for the first time in nearly five years, the living legend Bruno Sammartino will get in the ring with his son, David, to face the duo of Brutus Beefcake and Luscious Johnny V. </p><p> </p><p>

Intercontinental Champion, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine will defend his title against the man he nearly ended the career of, Tito Santana. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff will square off with the "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. The World Tag Team Champions, though slightly damaged by a lingering ankle injury to Mike Rotundo, will defend their titles against The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff. MSG crowds will get their first look at one of the brightest young stars of the WWF, as "Macho Man" Randy Savage will take on Tony Atlas. All this and so much more at the new show of shows, WRESTLEMANIA!!!</p><p> </p><p>

Wrestlemania

Wk 1, April 1985

Madison Square Garden

New York City, New York

We are welcomed in to the first ever spectacle of sports entertainment, Wrestlemania! They have jampacked Madison Square Garden for tonight's major extravaganza, and we are greeted by our hosts for the evening, Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. They run down the big card tonight, which is headlined by the World Wrestling Federation Champion Hulk Hogan putting his title on the line against the Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper. Of course in Hogan's corner will be television star Mr. T as well. In addition, to keep law and order on the outside, former World Heavyweight Champion boxer, Muhammad Ali will serve as the special guest enforcer for the matchup. But we begin tonight with a huge 20-man battle royal!

20-Man Battle Royal

Adrian Adonis, "The Outlaw" Ron Bass, Matt Borne, Jerry Brisco, Tony Garea, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, "Soulman" Rocky Johnson, Junkyard Dog, Moondog Rex, The Magnificent Muraco, Dick Murdoch, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, Ken Patera, Ivan Putski, "Playboy" Buddy Rose, Jacques Rougeau, Raymond Rougeau, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, George "The Animal" Steele, George Wells

The carnage is quick to begin in this battle royal, as they often are, with George Wells and Jerry Brisco being the first two athletes eliminated in quick fashion. Workers continue to battle with each other, alliances created and falling in a matter of moments. One alliance that seems to be working though is that between The Magnificent Muraco and George "The Animal" Steele. They make good on eliminating guys as best they can, and make it to the final four, quickly joined by Ivan Putski and the Junkyard Dog. Putski is eliminated next, leaving only the Dog with Muraco and Steele. The JYD puts up as much of a fight as he can, but is overwhelmed by the two partners in Mr. Fuji's camp. Then, just as quickly, Muraco turns on Steele and chucks him over the top rope. Muraco looks to eliminate JYD, but the incensed Animal charges back into the ring after the Magnificent One. This allows Dog to get his bearings and, to Mr. Fuji's costernation, sees the JYD toss Muraco over the top to get the win. After the match, Steele tries to gnaw on Muraco's ear, but Fuji protects his other charge by tossing salt in the eyes of the Animal and making his way to the back.

Winner: The Junkyard Dog

Backstage we get "Mean" Gene Okerlund set to talk with the challenger for the World Wrestling Federation Championship, Rowdy Roddy Piper. Piper says that Hogan's run as champion has been mired by nothing but talk. Always talking always yappin about this that or the other thing. Piper says tonight the time for talking is over. It's put up or shut up time. And when that bell rings, Hogan's going to fight out how much bite really is in the Rowdy Scot. And if Mr. T, or god forbid, Mr. Ali try to get involved, then Piper has a little something for them too.

King Kong Bundy w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan vs. "Special Delivery" S.D. Jones

The massive Bundy, a newcomer to the World Wrestling Federation, has been destroying everyone left and right since debuting, and veteran competitor Special Delivery Jones couldn't even put up a roadblock for the Walking Condominium. Much to the joy of Bobby Heenan, a Bundy Avalanche and a massive splash squashed the journeyman in 12 seconds flat. Monsoon wasn't sure if that was a record, but it was certainly impressive.

Winner by pinfall: King Kong Bundy

Backstage, Lord Alfred Hayes runs down the history of Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff and the Superfly Jimmy Snuka, following their backstory all the way from when Piper smashed Snuka over the head with a coconut, to their more recent encounters including the brawl they had at the War to Settle the Score. Tonight, they hope to settle their differences once and for all.

"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff vs. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka

The phenom of the World Wrestling Federation got everything off to a quick start, using his speed and agility to keep the more technically oriented Orndorff at arm's length. Orndorff withstood the storm, trying to target the neck of Snuka which had been somewhat damaged in last month's six man tag main event. He gets his opportunity when Snuka tries a high body press off the ropes, and Mr. Wonderful smartly dodges out of the way, sending the Superfly sprawling out to the floor. Orndorff then slows the match down, using a variety of rest holds to his advantage, but Snuka counters back with headbutts and chops to the sternum, before delivering a hard high knee right to the face of Orndroff. This stuns Mr. Wonderful long enough for Snuka to climb to the top rope to hit his famed Superfly Splash, but Orndorff again hits the counter and gets his knees up on Snuka. With the wind knocked out of him, Orndorff sinches up on a pinning combination to sneak away with the win.

Winner by pinfall: "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff

Backstage "Mean Gene" is standing by with the father and son tandem of Bruno and David Sammartino. David says that Brutus Beefcake's disrespect of his father is going to come to an end tonight, because tonight they are in their home away from home. Madison Square Garden. The sight of so many of his father's greatest victories, and tonight the home of his greatest triumph. Bruno says he's made many great memories in this building, but none will be sweeter than teaming with his own son at the first ever Wrestlemania.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage w/Miss Elizabeth vs. Tony Atlas

The undefeated Macho Man with his lovely valet Miss Elizabeth has looked impressive since debuting in the WWF, showcasing his unique blend of high flying action with intense mat work. His hands were full with the power lifter Tony Atlas though. The former tag champion kept the Macho Man off his game and out of the air, using his strength and experience to his advantage. But Savage's greater athleticism won out in the end, and as soon as he went airborne it was like picking fish in a barrel, hitting several quick strike axehandles across the back of Atlas until the big man was down. Finally, Savage finished him off with his patented elbow drop finisher from the top, to keep his undefeated streak in tact.

Winner by pinfall: "Macho Man" Randy Savage

We go once again backstage, this time to Vince McMahon who is set to interview Bobby Heenan and Big John Studd. Heenan shows off the bag with $25,000 in it in cold hard cash. And all the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Jolly Green Giant Andre has to do to get his hands on it is do something that no man has ever done, slam the true giant of professional wrestling, Big John Studd, and do it in 20 minutes. McMahon makes the point that this seems like a one-sided bet and Heenan replies that Andre was stupid enough to take it. That's why he's the Brain, and after tonight, Andre will be the Bust.

Bruno & David Sammartino vs. Brutus Beefcake & Luscious Johnny V

The crowd goes crazy for the returning Living Legend, the former two time World Wrestling Federation Champion, Bruno Sammartino and his son David. But the two upstarts, Brutus Beefcake and Luscious Johnny V, pay no heed to the crowd's reaction. Almost immediately they isolate the older veteran, and use Brutus' youth and strength to his advantage. While Bruno fights valiantly, Brutus continues to wear the former champion down, while Johnny Valiant takes potshots at times. Things go pear shaped for the bad guys though once David makes a hot tag to his father, and starts pounding Johnny V into a pulp. A rake across the eyes stops him temporarily, but David powers through and throws Beefcake out of the ring. Johnny V comes in from behind and tries to rake David across the back, but David no sells it, causing Johnny to back up straight into Bruno. The two Sammartino's then take turns punching Johnny right in the kisser like an over-dressed ping pong. However, Beefcake sneaks up from behind and rolls up David, the legal man. Using the middle rope for leverage, Brutus is able to score the pinfall and get out of their with a win.

Winners by pinfall: Brutus Beefcake & Luscious Johnny V

Backstage Lord Alfred Hayes provides us with the backstory to the former Intercontinental Champion, Tito Santana, as he had been beaten down by the current champion Greg Valentine several months earlier, with severe damage to his right knee. After a hard rehabilitation, Tito managed a miraculous comeback, and now tonight is poised to try and regain his title from the man who took it from him, The Hammer.

WWF Intercontinental Championship Match

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine w/Jimmy Hart © vs. Tito Santana

As you might expect, the match started off with valentine testing out the surgically repaired knee of Tito Santana, both as a way of targeting his weak spot and in setting up for the dreaded Figure-4 Leglock. The challenger had the move well-scouted, however, as Tito managed to stave off the champion for a good portion of the match with a quick strike offense. A timely distraction from Jimmy Hart when Tito looked to use Valentine's own hold on him caused the champion to regain his momentum, and start softening up Tito's knee. At the conclusion, it looked certain that Valentine would win, hooking Chico in the figure-4, but Tito was able to reverse the pressure forcing the champion to break the hold. Valentine got up and whipped Tito into the ropes, only to be caught by surprise with a flying forearm shot. Tito, unable to make a cover, struggled to his feet as did Valentine, and that let Tito hit a second flying forearm, this time making the cover and scoring the pin.

Winner by Pinfall and NEW Intercontinental Champion: Tito Santana

WWF World Tag Team Championship Match

The U.S. Express w/Capt. Lou Albano © vs. Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik w/Classy Freddie Blassie

The foreign challengers once again tried to get the MSG crowd to stand for the Soviet National Anthem, but they were interrupted by the U.S. Express coming out to Born in the USA. Rotundo and Volkoff started off, and the foreign legion quickly tried to use their size advantage over the champions. The teamwork and comradery of Windham and Rotundo though were tough to overcome, using quick tags to keep the challengers on their toes. Eventually Rotundo was isolated, with Sheik even locking him in the dreaded Camel Clutch. Windham made the save, but his interference caused a hard double team from the challengers. Eventually Rotundo did make the hot tag to Windham, and Barry came in to clean house. All 4 men quickly got in the ring, distracting the referee. This allowed Freddie Blassie to target Windham with his cane, with Volkoff holding him prone. But Windham ducked down, with Blassie smashing the cane across Volkoff's head by mistake. Windham then delivered a side Russian Legsweep to Volkoff, and followed it up with a diving knee drop from Rotundo to score the pinfall.

Winners by Pinfall and STILL World Tag Team Champions: The U.S. Express

Backstage "Mean Gene" has caught up with The Fabulous Moolah and her charge, the Ladies Champion Sherri Martel. Moolah says that Wendi Richter had sullied the good name of women's wrestling over the last several months, but finally we have a champion we can be proud of. Sherri adds that after tonight, they'll be finally done with both Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter, and Moolah can get her much deserved rematch. Okerlund reminds Moolah that if she interferes tonight, she'll be barred from ever challenging for the Ladies World Championship again. Moolah says that won't matter. Sherri will win with or without her help.

$25,000 Slam Challenge

"The Eighth Wonder of the World" Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan

Andre was looking to finally get his hands on the Giant Studd, willing to put his career on the line just for a chance to beat the big man and get revenge for the head shearing several months earlier. Studd's plan was clearly to stall for time, using the 20 minute clock to his advantage. Andre and Studd continued to wail on each other, but everytime Andre would try for a slam, Studd would either grab a rope or do something to try and avoid the move. However, finally, at around four minutes left to go, Andre scooped up Studd out of nowhere and slammed him hard to the ground. He immediately got the bag of money and tried to toss it to the crowd, only for Heenan to rush in and immediately grab the money and run. Andre didn't really care, and smiled to the crowd, his career in tact.

Winner: Andre the Giant

Backstage we are now with Vince McMahon who is with WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, along with his good friend Mr. T. Hogan says that Piper is the one who has been doing all talking lately, but finally Piper has said something that all the Hulkamaniacs can agree with. The time for talking is over. We are ready for the clash of titans between the two, and Piper is not going to have anywhere to hide or anyone to turn to, with Muhammad Ali making sure nothing's happening on the outside. As a result, Hulkamania will run wild tonight here at Wrestlemania.

WWF Ladies World Championship Match

"Sensational" Sherri Martel w/The Fabulous Moolah © vs. Wendi Richter w/Cyndi Lauper

In this rematch from the month previous, it was clear that Martel's strength advantage remained in tact over the challenger. Martel and Richter traded several strikes in the early going, but Sherri used a couple of slams to put the former champion on the mat. Once Wendi started making a comeback, you could tell that Moolah wanted to interfere, but thankfully for her she could only sit and watch as the match continued to go back and forth. Finally, with Sherri holding Wendi up on her shoulders, Richter rolled forward in a Victory Roll and scored the quick pinfall to regain her lost championship!

Winner by Pinfall and NEW Ladies World Champion: Wendi Richter

Before our main event, we are introduced to the special guest enforcer for the evening, Muhammad Ali.

WWF Championship Match

Hulk Hogan w/Mr. T © vs. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper w/"Cowboy" Bob Orton

Piper enters the ring first, all arrogance and confidence as usual, while Hogan appears to be all business with his hated rival. The match nearly gets out of hand early on, as referee Pat Patterson has trouble keeping Orton and Mr. T out of the line of fire. Ali comes into the ring, and even takes a swing at Orton that causes him to back off. Eventually the match settles into its mode, with Piper showing that he has every right to be confident, using every dirty trick in his kilt to try and slow down the champion. Hogan fights back every time, using his power and strength advantage over Piper. However, the Greatest can't completely stop interference, as when he is admonishing Mr. T at one point, Orton uses his dreaded cast on the back of the head of Hogan. Amazingly the Hulkster kicks out at two, while Ali goes back to Orton and takes him out with a straight right hand. Piper is unable to stop the on-rush of adrenaline as Hogan hulks up, delivering the trademark three right hands, followed by a big boot and a leg drop for the 1-2-3.

Winner by Pinfall and STILL WWF Champion: Hulk Hogan

The Road to Rage in the Cage...

On the heels of the first successful Wrestlemania, the WWF is set to present it's next mega supercard, WWF Rage in the Cage, live from the Boston Garden in Boston Massachusetts. There we will have a huge double main event, with both matches taking place inside a steel cage. As the heated rivalry between WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper reaches its climax, the two have barely been able to occupy the same space without attacking one another. Perhaps, within the brutal confines of the steel cage, they will finally settle their differences once and for all, with the WWF Title hanging in the balance.

In the other main event, history is going to be made as for the first time ever, the Ladies World Championship will be decided in a grudge match between the champion, Wendi Richter, and her longtime foe and nemesis, The Fabulous Moolah. It's been nearly a year since Richter ended Moolah's decades-long run as champion, and though Moolah has made Wendi's life hard with a series of proteges, including Sherri Martel who beat her once, Wendi has still persevered. This time though, in the first ever Women's Steel Cage Match, the Fabulous One has vowed to take matters into her own hands and regain the belt she feels she should have never lost.

The undercard will thrill as well, as Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana will defend against Luscious Johnny V's protege, Brutus Beefcake. Former partners turned enemies The Magnificent Muraco will do battle with George "The Animal" Steele. The World Wrestling Federation will crown it's first ever World Television Champion, as "Soulman" Rocky Johnson will take on Adrian Adonis. Andre the Giant will handle Piper's goon squad, as he faces both Paul Orndorff and Cowboy Bob Orton in a handicap match. And in six-man tag action, The World Tag Team Champions will team up with the Junkyard Dog to face The Hart Foundation and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine. Plus we'll see the a tag team combination unlike any other, the mighty Gargantuans of King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd.

The Foundation showed why they were one of the best young tag teams in the business. They isolated the JYD and tried their best to keep it at a three-on-one advantage. Those times when Windham or Rotunda were able to get into the match, the three-on-one from Jimmy Hart's entourage started anew. However the tide turned when a miscommunicated axehandle from Valentine accidentally hit Neidhart square between the eyes, followed by a dropkick from Rotunda. This allowed him to make the tag to Windham, who cleaned house of the Hart Foundation and the Hammer. Jimmy Hart tried to get involved, but quickly got a whack from the JYD who caused him to tumble to the outside. The distraction though allowed Valentine to clip the knee of Windham, drag him to the center of the ring and lock on the Figure-4. In time Steele seemed to wear himself out, allowing Muraco to move in for the kill. But Steele was surprisingly luring him in, catching the Hawaiian star with rights and lefts suddenly that had the big man reeling. Once Muraco was down, Fuji quickly distracted Steele again, getting his attention while surreptitiously tossing his cane into Muraco. Tito had this well scouted too, and countered this with some technical work of his own. The crowd really started to get into the back and forth between champion and challenger, and were shocked when Beefcake managed to kick out of Tito's flying forearm. Tito went for the move again, only for the challenger to duck out of the way and send Tito sprawling out to the ground. The Giant may have bitten off more than he could chew, though, as Orndorff and Orton used a double team advantage as often as they could to keep the Giant on the ground, where his verticality wouldn't be a factor. Orndorff kept in most of the match, but although they could wound the Giant, they couldn't find a way to finish him off. Andre started making a comeback, including a pair of bodyslams to Orndorff and Orton in quick succession. After regrouping on the outside, Orton and Mr. Wonderful attacked Andre together, and in the fracass the referee went down. Orndorff held Andre in a prone position for Orton to leap off the top with his loaded cast, but Andre moved out of the way, causing Orndorff to be knocked out cold. Andre grabbed Orton and delivered a massive double underhook suplex just as the ref came too, and got the pinfall win. After the match, Orndorff and Orton started arguing incessantly with one another. Orton tried to cheap shot Orndorff, but Mr. Wonderful countered with a straight right hand of his own, to the cheers of the crowd.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Pinfall: "The Eighth Wonder of the World" Andre the Giant</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Steel Cage Match for the Ladies World Championship</strong></p><p><strong> Wendi Richter © vs. The Fabulous Moolah</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> It was hard to say what everyone was expecting for the first ever Ladies Championship match inside a steel cage, but it was clear the cage could barely contain the hatred between these two competitors. Wendi started off the match by bouncing Moolah off the cage as hard as she could. Moolah used her in-ring saavy though to counter another whip attempt with a thumb to the eye, before chucking the champion hard into the steel sides. Moolah dominated the next part of the match in her usual style, before finally attempting to scale the cage and escape. Wendi caught her though and brought her back into the ring, but another thumb to the eye caused Moolah to regain the upper hand. The second time Moolah attempted to escape, she almost made it out, before Wendi chased after her. The two fought on the top rope, using the cage for a balance, before Wendi was able to throw Moolah off the top and onto the mat. Wendi then climbed out of the cage and exited before Moolah could get back to chase her, and won the match.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Escape and STILL the Ladies World Champion: Wendi Richter</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Steel Cage Match for the WWF Championship</strong></p><p><strong> Hulk Hogan © vs. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> As it was with their Wrestlemania encounter, the hatred on display for the two men was palpable. Piper kept trying to goad Hogan into making a mistake, running away from the champion as best he could despite being in the cage with him. Hogan did manage several hard right hands that rocked Piper, but some quick thinking from the Hot Rod led him when he had Hogan down to slam the cage door into Hogan's right hand. Piper didn't take the opportunity to escape from the cage either, instead taunting the champion, to his own detriment. Hogan fought back through the pain, switching to southpaw punches that, though less effective, still found the mark. Piper tried everything he could think of to keep Hogan down, but the champion kept finding a way to stop Piper from climbing out of the cage. Finally near the end, both men had been exhausted, with Hogan hitting his legdrop finisher on the challenger. The champion started up the cage first, but Piper quickly got back to his feet and tried to make it down the other side. Both men climbed out of the cage nearly simultaneously. After conferring with one another, the referees made the decision that Hogan had landed just a split second before Piper, and despite the Rowdy Scot's protests, Hogan was declared the winner.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Escape and STILL WWF Champion: Hulk Hogan</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote>

<p><em>On the Road to King of the Ring...</em></p><p> </p><p>

One of the more unique concepts for 1985 is the one-night tournament to determine who the greatest Ironman competitor of the WWF truly is. The King of the Ring is designed to be a grueling challenge for 1 of 8 WWF Superstars, as they will have to win up to 3 matches in one night to earn this prestigious honor. After hard qualifying matches for the last few weeks, the 8 participants have been selected, and have entered some choice pairings for the brackets. At the top half, the undefeated Macho Man Randy Savage will square off with the son of the living legend, David Sammartino. Just below him, two great technical stars will square off, as Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat will face Bret "The Hitman" Hart. Next up we have a battle between two veterans as the newly turned fan favorite "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff battles the dreaded Iron Sheik. And in the final semi-final match, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper will go one on one with the former Intercontinental Champion, Tito Santana.</p><p> </p><p>

In other matchups, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan will have his hands full with his challenger this evening, The Magnificent Muraco, to say nothing of Muraco's ever-present partner in crime, Mr. Fuji. On top of that, Bobby Heenan's devastating tag team combination of The Gargantuans, King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd, will challenge The US Express for the World Tag Team Titles. And the World TV Title will be at stake, as Rocky Johnson will defend against Moondog Rex.</p><p> </p><p>

Hulk Hogan

Savage/Sammartino/Steamboat/Hart - Macho King, ooo yeah!

Gargantuans - They will get the win, though they may not win the titles.

Orndorff/Sheik

Savage/Sammartino - Albeit by simply moving ahead, if my choice for the Ricky/Bret match is correct.

Rocky Johnson

Roddy Piper

Paul Orndorff

Time limit draw between Steamboat and Hart - I don't think you're gonna give us Savage vs. Steamboat on a smaller event like this.

Randy Savage

However, Savage's legendary temper came to the forefront when Miss Elizabeth inadvertently slipped at ringside, taking a tumble after an errant baseball slide from Steamboat. Steamboat tried to help Miss Elizabeth to her feet and check on her, but Savage's jealous streak came out and he attacked Steamboat with reckless abandon. Tossing Steamboat back into the ring, Savage proceeded to attack him relentlessly, diving off the top rope with not one but two elbows straight into the sternum. When the referee tried to pull Savage off of Steamboat, Savage shoved him out of the way, causing the referee to call for the disqualification. Savage finished it off with a third elbow to the sternum of the Dragon before storming off to the back.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Disqualification: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>King of the Ring Semifinal Match #2</strong></p><p><strong> "Rowdy" Roddy Piper w/"Cowboy" Bob Orton vs. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Orndorff attacked Piper right after the bell began, eager to gain some measure of revenge against his former friend. Piper's usual rope-a-dope strategy that he had used against Santana could not withstand Mr. Wonderful's onslaught, and Orndorff looked like he might finish off Piper quickly. Timely intervention from the Ace Cowboy once again was able to hold Orndorff at bay long enough for Piper to reestablish control of the match. After some time, Piper was able to hook Orndorff in his sleeper hold, but Mr. Wonderful was able to power out of the move and rally back. Orndorff set up Piper for his piledriver finisher, but Orton again got involved and distracted the referee, allowing Piper to hit a lowblow out of nowhere. He then rolled up Orndorff and scored the victory when the referee turned back around.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by pinfall: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>WWF Tag Team Championship Match</strong></p><p><strong> The U.S. Express © vs. The Gargantuans w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Windham and Rotundo had been a dominant tag team during their run as champions, but they ran straight into a brick wall when running up against King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd. They tried everything in their arsenal, using their speed and quickness over the lumbering giants to try and wear them down by having them chase them all across the ring, but as soon as the Gargantuans got one of them isolated, they thoroughly dominated them. Studd and Bundy took turns walloping on Rotundo, and despite a last ditch comeback attempt from Windham, won the match and the belts in relatively easy fashion with a combination corner Avalanche and Elbow Drop.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winners by Pinfall and NEW Tag Team Champions: The Gargantuans</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <em>Backstage Lord Alfred Hayes is with Rowdy Roddy Piper, who has to be feeling confident given the advantage he has over an injured Ricky Steamboat and Bob Orton in his corner. The resiliance of The Dragon really won over the crowd as he put on a great show against Piper, taking everything the Rowdy Scot could offer and nearly pulling off the upset with a thrilling top rope body press. Piper's sleeper hold nearly put the Dragon down for good, but Steamboat was able to rally back a second time and come back to try another body press. The momentum this time though pushed through Piper, allowing Roddy to roll through and cover Steamboat instead of the other way around, and score the quick three count to win the crown.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Pinfall and the 1985 King of the Ring Winner: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45203" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>World Wrestling Federation Championship Match</strong></p><p><strong> Hulk Hogan © vs. The Magnificent Muraco w/Mr. Fuji</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Muraco and Hogan tied up at center ring in a show of strength, and neither man seems to gain an advantage. The champion seems taken aback by the raw strength of the Magnificent One, and when they lock up again, Hogan gets caught in an arm wringer, with Muraco working over his arm to try and limit his strength. Hogan fights back, and when they lock up again this time he hooks Muraco in an arm wringer. The two are evenly matched for the early part of the match, until Hogan starts to gain momentum with a series of clotheslines into the corner. Fuji jumps up on the apron, distracting Hogan long enough for Muraco to come back with an axehandle across the back. Muraco then works over the back of the champion, trying to wear him down before cinching him into a brutal bearhug submission. Muraco squeezes the life out of the champion, and the referee checks him out for being knocked out. The arm drops twice, but on the third time Hogan keeps the arm up and starts to fight out of the hold. Hogan gets that rush of adrenaline and hits three hard right hands on Muraco. Fuji climbs up to the ring apron to interfere, salt in hand, but Hogan grabs him by his lapels and smacks him around, sending the Devious One to the apron. Hogan turns around and slams Muraco, before following up with the Legdrop for the victory.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner by Pinfall and STILL WWF Champion: Hulk Hogan</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote>

<p><em>The Road to Rumble in the Bronx...</em></p><p> </p><p>

The WWF is proud to present a mega-event unlike any other, the Rumble in the Bronx. Taking place inside the historic Yankee Stadium, this outdoor extravaganza promises to be a first of its kind event in sports entertainment history!</p><p> </p><p>

Since winning the world tag team titles, The Gargantuans of King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd have run roughshot over the whole of the WWF. Their manager, Bobby Heenan, has been so confident, he even issued a challenge to the WWF Champion himself to find a partner and to try and derail his mammoth champions. Hogan obliged, fighting fire with fire by joining forces with his good friend, the Eighth Wonder of the World, Andre the Giant. The two colossal forces will meet at the Rumble in the Bronx, with the WWF Tag Team Titles on the line.</p><p> </p><p>

The newly crowned King of the Ring, Roddy Piper, has made it clear he intends to be a king not of benevolence, but of malevolence. Yet, his coronation ceremony was ruined by the actions of his former friend and running mate, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. The feud between the two has reached a fever pitch, and with Cowboy Bob Orton locked inside a steel cell at ringside preventing his interference, we finally have the opportunity for a true one on one encounter between Piper and Orndorff.</p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile the titular Rumble in the Bronx promises to be a knock down drag out brawl. 30 men will enter the ring at one time, with a promised payday of $100,000, it's anything goes and every man for himself in this battle royal to end all battle royals.</p><p> </p><p>

Plus, Intercontinental Champion Brutus Beefcake will team with Luscious Johnny V's latest managerial acquisition, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine to form a Dream Team to take on the US Express. Rocky Johnson will defend his television title against Nikolai Volkoff. A score is to be settled as the Junkyard Dog does battle with a newly arrived nemesis, Terry Funk. 8 Women will team up in a Ladies Tag Team Free-For-All. All this and so much more at the WWF's Rumble in the Bronx!</p><p> </p><p>
