[WCW 1991] Bischoff Era Begins Early

Recommended Posts

News And Notes

-Ted Turner Promotions, also known as World Championship Wrestling, is under new management as of January 1, 1991. Former Executive Vice President, Jim Herd, has been reassigned to another division within Turner Enterprises. Rumor has it that this change is because of the debacle that was the Black Scorpion storyline. We have heard that it wasn't until the last minute that Ric Flair stepped in to be the man under the mask at Starrcade 1990.

-With Jim Herd out as Executive Vice President, this also means that Ole Anderson has been removed from the head booker position, giving two separate openings in the company.

-After extensive interviews, we have learned that the man who replaced Jim Herd is named Eric Bischoff. If you're asking yourself just who this is, you would not be alone. Last seen in wrestling, Bischoff was a host and on-air interviewer for the American Wrestling Association. It is said that he will be bringing more of a business aspect to the company.

-One of the first decisions that he has made is that every single episode of World Championship Wrestling will now be aired live on Saturday nights. This is an aspect of professional wrestling that has never been tried before and would surely give Eric Bischoff a long-lasting legacy if he can pull this off. He has told major publications that anything can happen on an episode of World Championship Wrestling.

-On the creative side of things, Eric Bischoff has decided to have a committee to help him make decisions. That committee will consist of Dusty Rhodes, Kevin Sullivan, Ric Flair and Sting.

-Eric Bischoff's next decision was to release Al Green and Grizzly Smith. He said that the company wishes them the best in their future endeavors.

-We have heard that the company will not be leaving the NWA as of right now. That is contrary to the popular belief that the company has outgrown the NWA.

World Championship Wrestling

-For the first time, World Championship Wrestling will be coming to you live from the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia! Each and every week, World Championship Wrestling will be live on Saturday night. This show has a huge unprecedented main event as Sting will defend the NWA World Heavyweight title against 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair of the Four Horsemen! Ric Flair is a former six time NWA World Heavyweight Champion. The most recent time he held the title was back from May of 1989 to July of 1990 when he lost the title to Sting. Sting has held this title since July of 1990.

-In another match, the NWA World Tag Team Champions Doom steps into the ring with The Renegade Warriors. The Renegade Warriors pulling out a victory here would definitely put them in line for a shot at the NWA World Tag Team titles. But, Doom has been a tough defeat, having survived a Street Fight with the Horsemen at Starrcade 1990. Last year, they also beat The Rock 'N' Roll Express and The Steiner Brothers. The Renegade Warriors, also, beat The Nasty Boys last year so they have proven that they can beat top quality competition.

-We have also learned that the NWA United States Champion Lex Luger is going to be in the building. The man known as The Total Package won the title at Starrcade 1990 against Stan Hansen. We have learned that Hansen is no longer with the company and spending his focus on Japan. With Hansen out of the picture, Luger needs a new challenger. Who will step up to the NWA United States Champion? Last year, Lex Luger defeated wrestlers like Sid Vicious, Motor City Madman and even Ric Flair.

-In our first hour main event, we are going to see Barry Windham of the Four Horsemen take on Terry Taylor. Windham has recently been in tag team action both here and in All Japan. He defeated Akira Taue in AJPW and Doug Furnas at Clash of the Champions 11 in singles matches. At Starrcade 1990, he and Arn Anderson went to a double pin with Doom. Terry Taylor recently lost to Michael Wallstreet at Starrcade 1990. But he defeated Wild Bill Irwin at Halloween Havoc. Which man will get some momentum as we move forward toward the Clash of the Champions?

-In our opening match, the NWA Television Title will be on the line as Z-Man steps in the ring with Dutch Mantell. Mantell is a veteran wrestler but he has been on a bit of a losing streak here lately in Ted Turner Promotions. However, a victory here for the NWA Television title would go a long way toward turning that around. The Z-Man, however, has beaten guys like Arn Anderson, Brian Lee and The Cuban Assassin. Though, he did a suffer a loss to Bobby Eaton at Starrcade 1990 before he won the Television title.

-Plus El Gigante is in action against George South, The Horsemen are in the building and Kevin Sullivan is in the building. Plus we learn more about the upcoming Clash of the Champions card on TBS. Make sure you tune in to World Championship Wrestling!

Comments On The Diary In General:

===

Glad to see your keeping the NWA name around and not rushing into changing everything over to WCW right away. Can't wait. Will be following.

Thanks for the comments, horseman4lyfe. I know it would be easier to leave the NWA and just focus on yourself but I also set all of my titles to be alliance titles before I started the game. So all of my NWA titles are just that, NWA titles, owned by the alliance. Glad you'll be following. I hope you enjoy the diary as we move forward.

Love this WCW period. A lot to work with -- TV Specials like the Clash, PPV Tours like the Bash and the NJPW alliance. Really looking forward to this.

Subbed and ready to follow closely, brutha!

I know it's a little too late to change it now, but from all the research I've done the only titles that were actual NWA-owned titles at the start of 1991 was the World Heavyweight. All the others were holdovers from JCP, which is why most of their lineages continue back beyond the move to WCW. The only oddball is the World Tag Team titles, which was severed for reasons I don't quite understand because the NWA didn't have their own Tag belts until 1992. However, I look forward to seeing what you do; hopefully the NWA won't start randomly swapping your belts on you at shows in WWC or whatnot.

Z-Man - Attitude aside, Zenk really isn't the worst person who could be running with the TV belt.

El Gigante - He's big, dammit, he has to get over! :p

Barry Windham - Taylor was on the cusp of his heel turn, so a loss here won't hurt him by the time he makes the switch.

Doom - I remember one of your previous WCW games when you gave the Rens a nice little push up to the belts, but I'm not figuring it'll happen here.

No Contest - Way too big a match to have a strong finish for on free TV.

Came back today and saw this, will be following!

NWA Television Title Match

10 Minute Time Limit

Z-Man defends vs. Dutch Mantell

Comments: Zenk could've been a star with a better attitude, and it'll probably cost him big for you. But he'll keep the TV Title for now.

10 Minute Time Limit

George South vs. El Gigante

Comments: George South was always a jobbing man, never been a fan of the Gonzales/Gigante hype though

20 Minute Time Limit

Barry Windham vs. Terry Taylor

Comments: A good contest, but I've never been able to get on board with Taylor, in spite of his York Foundation stuff, Red Rooster is hard to shake off

Non-Title Match

10 Minute Time Limit

Doom vs. The Renegade Warriors

Comments: Remind me who the Renegade Warriors are, again?

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

30 Minute Time Limit Or TV Time Remaining

Sting defends vs. Ric Flair

Comments: The Time Limit finish seems a good way to close out the show and prolong any feud that may or may not take place.

Dangerously</strong> by the announce booth. They discuss last week's World Championship Wrestling show and particularly the main event where Ric Flair won the NWA World Heavyweight title from Sting. Paul E. Dangerously cries foul on Sting as he announces that Flair suffered a fractured foot toward the end of the match. He won't be able to wrestle again until the Clash of the Champions. Ross lets us know that, at the end of the show, we will see a condensed version of the match and fans can decide for themselves what happened. Ross adds that the main event of Power Hour is going to be Brian Pillman taking on Michael Wallstreet. Then, he sends us to our opening match.<p> </p><p> -In an extremely short match, Larry Zbyszko(B-) defeated Keith Hart(E) in 3:48 by pinfall with a Piledriver...C-</p><p> </p><p> -It's time for the Wrestling News Network with <strong>Gordon Solie</strong>! Solie discusses what happened last week when <strong>Missy Hyatt</strong> slapped <strong>Paul E. Dangerously</strong>. He brings up their feud before sending us to an interview with Hyatt. Missy Hyatt complains about the mysoginistic attitude of Dangerously before she challenges him to a match at Clash of the Champions. But, not just any match, an arm-wrestling match! She promises that she will prove that women are not the weaker sex.</p><p> </p><p> -In an extremely short match, The Southern Boys(Smothers-D+, Armstrong-D) defeated The Royal Family(Morgan-D-, Victory-E+) in 4:30 when Tracy Smothers defeated Jack Victory by pinfall with a Doomsday Dropkick...D+</p><p> </p><p> -From there, we go to a pre-taped interview with <strong>Terry Taylor</strong>. Taylor talks about how excited that he is about getting a NWA World title shot at the Clash of the Champions. He says that he has earned this title shot and there is nothing that is going to stand in his way when he walks that aisle against Ric Flair. He says he is sorry that Flair was hurt last week but that's not going to stop him from taking the title from him. Not even the rest of the Four Horsemen are going to stop him. Taylor says that at Clash of the Champions he is going to be a Taylor Made Man.</p><p> </p><p> -In an extremely short match, Owen Hart(D+) defeated Dutch Mantell(D) in 4:10 by pinfall with a Missile Dropkick...D+</p><p> </p><p> -From the ring, we move to a pre-recorded interview with <strong>Alexandra York</strong> and <strong>Michael Wallstreet</strong>. York reminds everyone that this is going to be the year of the York Foundation. She says that she has been inputting all of the information about Brian Pillman into the computer. She says that the computer says that Wallstreet will beat Pillman in less than eleven minutes and twenty seconds. She says that technology beats everyone and Michael Wallstreet will prove that tonight.</p><p> </p><p> -In a decent match, Brian Pillman(C+) defeated Michael Wallstreet(C-) in 10:01 when Michael Wallstreet intentionally got disqualified...B-</p><p> </p><p> -The focus returns to the announce booth and <strong>Jim Ross</strong> and <strong>Paul E. JR thanks everyone again and then sends us to the main event from World Championship Wrestling last week.</p><p> </p><p> -A replay begins showcasing the main event from World Championship Wrestling. The match is between <strong>Sting</strong> and <strong>Ric Flair</strong>. The replay is a condensed version of the match that starts into the match. Highlights from the match include Sting reversing a figure 4 into a small package and Flair finally locking on the Figure 4 and using the ropes for leverage until he gets caught by the referee. Then the finish is shown where Sting begins a comeback, sending Flair flipping over the turnbuckles. Flair lands hard on the apron and then falls to ringside, grabbing his foot in pain. This leads to interference by <strong>Arn Anderson</strong> and <strong>Sid Vicious</strong>. After Vicious Power Bombs Sting, Flair gets rolled back in by Anderson and makes the cover, using the ropes for leverage and scoring the pinfall. The show ends with Ric Flair holding up the NWA World Heavyweight title belt.</p><p></p></div></div><div></div></blockquote></div><p></p>

This week anything can happen here on World Championship Wrestling. In our main event, we are going to see a big six man tag team match as </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>The IV Horsemen</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">, including Arn Anderson, Barry Windham and Sid Vicious, take on the team of </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Terry Taylor</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> and </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>The Steiner Brothers</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">! Can he keep the momentum going?</span><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> -We have, also, learned that we will be having a State Of The Freebirds speech by </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Michael Hayes</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Hayes has been trying to tell everyone that things are good within the Freebirds. However, with this speech, we will learn the truth about where the Freebirds are at this point in time. Not only will he be on commentary, he has also said that he will be giving us the answer to Missy Hyatt's challenge that she laid out on the Power Hour. Will he face her in a battle of the sexes arm-wrestling challenge? Not only will he be giving that answer but he will also be running an episode of The Danger Zone. His special guests will be none other than </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Teddy Long</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> and </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Doom</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Who is next to face them?</span></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> -Also, we will be having the anticipated NWA Television title match as </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Z-Man</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"> defends the title against the man who beat him at Starrcade 1990: </span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;"><strong>Bobby Eaton</strong></span><span style="font-family:TAHOMA;">. Z-Man takes the advantage early on in the bout, hitting Eaton with a dropkick and then a clothesline before Eaton rolls out of the ring to get a quick breather, pacing at ringside before sliding back in under the bottom rope. Z-Man picks up the pace again, going right after Eaton as he wants to prove that he is deserving of the Television title. Z-Man wrenches Eaton's arm and then he brings him down with an arm wringer. Z-Man heads to the top turnbuckle and goes for the missile dropkick but Eaton ducks out of the way and Z-Man crashes to the mat. Eaton goes for a quick pinfall but only gets a two count. Eaton continues his control of the match, bringing Z-Man down with a nice vertical suplex before bouncing off the ropes and hitting a diving knee drop. Eaton makes another cover and only gets a two count. As we move forward in the match, the announcer lets everyone that there are four minutes remaining in the time limit. Eaton quickly picks up the pace and brings Z-Man down to the mat with a body slam. He goes for another knee drop but Z-Man rolls out of the way. Z-Man grabs Eaton and slides him over to the turnbuckles, slipping outside the ring and banging Eaton's leg against the ring post. Z-Man seems to be in control when the announcer says there is only one minute remaining! Z-Man heads to the top turnbuckle again and goes for his missile dropkick but Eaton avoids it and Z-Man lands hard on the mat. Eaton is slow to get up but pulls up Z-Man and hits a swinging neckbreaker. Eaton heads to the top turnbuckle slowly due to the knee pain from what he suffered earlier. Eaton makes it to the top and leaps -- Alabama Jam! He connects but grabs his leg in pain. On commentary, Jim Ross reminds everyone that they still have the State of the Freebird Address tonight plus Paul E. Dangerously either accepting or declining the challenge laid out by Missy Hyatt. What main event six man tag team match doesn't start with a brawl between all six men? This one definitely does, with each man pairing up with one of their opponents. Scott Steiner sends Arn Anderson flying with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex like he did in the parking lot and then joins his brother to double team Sid Vicious. They hit a double Steinerline and Vicious joins Anderson and Barry Windham, who was tossed out through the ropes, by Terry Taylor during this exchange. Rick Steiner runs around the ring barking before dropping to all fours with his brother Scott Steiner standing over him in the typical Steiner pose. Things slow down with only two wrestlers in the ring beginning with Scott Steiner and Arn Anderson. Scott and Rick use some frequent tags early on to keep Anderson off-balance. They hit a Steinerline/German Suplex combination for an early two count. The momentum shifts when Scott bounces off the ropes and Vicious hits him with a knee to the back. Anderson brings in Sid Vicious and Vicious begins working over Scott Steiner. Vicious sends Scott to the ropes and catches him with a big boot, proclaiming that he is the master and ruler of the world to a booing crowd. The Horsemen use some frequent tags like The Steiner Brothers did earlier in the match, keeping Scott in their corner. They use taunts on Rick and Terry Taylor to draw them in the ring and double and triple team Scott while the referee has his back turned. The Steiner Brothers join in the battle and we get a scene where all three members of that team rain down punches on The Horsemen in three separate corners while the crowd counts along to ten. The ring clears out except for Taylor and Windham as The Steiner Brothers and the other two Horsemen battle it out at ringside. Taylor goes to send Windham to the ropes but Windham reverses and catches Taylor with a dropkick. Windham lifts up Taylor and goes to a corner, setting Taylor up in the corner. Windham climbs up, setting up Taylor for the Superplex but Taylor shows he was playing possum! He throws punches to Windham and then shoves Windham off the second turnbuckle to the mat below. Taylor catches Windham with a jawbreaker and then knocks Arn Anderson off the apron as Anderson had climbed up to interfere with the match. Taylor bounces off the ropes and rushes toward Windham. Windham avoids the Five Arm attempt and goes for the Clawhold but Taylor grabs him by the wrist. Taylor struggles with Windham and then strikes him with a couple of knee shots to the ribs.
