Piper said he didn’t want to waste time with words, which isn’t like him at all, because he’s excited for what tonight will start. The Rowdy One said he can’t wait to stick it to Vince McMahon by dominating RAW and it starts tonight. RAW might have the WWF World Heavyweight Championship but SmackDown will have it’s own top title, the WWF Global Championship! Tonight a sixteen man tournament begins to determine just who will be the first champion, who’ll be crowned at SmackDown’s first brand exclusive pay per view in six weeks, Fully Loaded. Let the tournament, and SmackDown, commence! <strong>(B+ / 84)</strong><p> </p><p> 1. In the first match in SmackDown history it was Chris Jericho who advanced to the second round of the WWF Global Championship in a barnburner against Chris Benoit. Both men’s technical proficiency made for an exciting bout but it was Jericho who struck last as he hit the Codebreaker to secure his spot in the quarter-finals. <strong>(B / 80)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - With the bell rung The Rock walked out onto the stage flanked by his new allies, and the WWF Intercontinental Tag Team Champions, Edge & Christian. The Rock ran down Jericho, taunting him for losing at WrestleMania and thinking that he has any chance in this tournament. “The moment you ended up on the same show as me Jericho you lost any chance of being relevant, so why don’t you just take your own advice and shut your mouth, take your ball and go home, because SmackDown is The Rock’s show!” <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Extreme Rising might have been split up in the draft but Paul Heyman still has Taz, Scott Norton and Mike Awesome here on SmackDown. For Heyman that’s enough as he sent a warning to the SmackDown locker room. “We’re still here to take over, and it all starts with the WWF Global Championship. <strong>(C+ / 67)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 2. In high flying, cruiserweight tag team action it was WWF Cruiserweight Champion Jushin Thunder Liger and his partner Mikey Whipwreck who picked up the victory over Psicosis & Silver King when Liger pinned Silver King after an incredible Shooting Star Press. <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Fellow Cruiserweight Jerry Lynn made his way down to the ring following the match, getting right in Liger’s face. Lynn said that he was the headliner of the Cruiserweight division and that the title belongs around his waist and his alone, and he’s coming for Liger to take it. Liger didn’t seem overly concerned, though who knows what’s going on beneath that mask? <strong>(D / 45)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Elsewhere new SmackDown backstage reporter Marlena caught up with Dean Malenko, who said that he might be an underdog in the Global Championship tournament but that he wants to prove everyone wrong and show them that he is the best technician in the WWF. William Regal interrupted him and mocked his chances of winning against him next week, as well as rubbishing his claims, saying that he in fact is the top technician and he’ll prove it by becoming a double champion. This first round match just became personal. <strong>(B / 81)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 3. In the second first round match of the WWF Global Championship tournament it was Extreme Rising’s Scott Norton battling it out with someone who knows all about going to the extreme, Cactus Jack. Despite the presence of Extreme Rising at ringside Cactus managed to advance in the tournament with the Double Arm DDT. Paul Heyman was furious, and will be hoping Taz gets on better next week against Randy Savage. <strong>(B / 79)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Speaking of Savage, the man himself was backstage when he had a run-in with Triple H, The New Age Outlaws & Chyna. The foursome (or rather threesome, with Chyna standing silently) mocked Savage for still being around, saying that he’s an old man trying to compete with the new generation. Savage challenged Triple H to prove that in the ring but Triple H laughed him off, saying he wouldn’t want him to pop a hip, and told him to watch how this generation gets it done. <strong>(B / 79)</strong></p><p> </p><p> 4. Following their run-in last night on RAW it was no surprise that Roddy Piper pitted The Undertaker and Chainz against each other in the first round of the Global Championship tournament. Just like last night however the match ended with The Undertaker planting Chainz to the mat with a tombstone to advance to the quarter-finals. <strong>(B / 80)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - While The Undertaker stood tall in the ring the camera cut to the rafters above it, where Sting was shown to be watching on! Sting hasn’t said a word since shocking the world when he attacked The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and that didn’t change tonight as he watched on silently. <strong>(B- / 76)</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">SPOTLIGHT SEGMENT</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> <img alt="dMyoVG2.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/dMyoVG2.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> SmackDown’s number one draft pick Bret Hart hit the ring next, the former three time WWF World Champion, and the man who has been at the forefront of the World Wrestling Federation for over three years, coming down to talk about how he might have lost at WrestleMania to his “lesser little brother”, but that he was focused now on becoming the first ever Global Champion and showing Owen what a real champion looks like. “This is my show and there is nobody out there who can stop me because I’m the best there is, the best there…” Before Bret could finish the sentence however he was cut off!</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="2lyX0Mt.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/2lyX0Mt.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Rob Van Dam joined Bret in the ring, saying he wanted to meet the legend who he’s planning on beating next week. “Bret I get you’ve been the man around here for a long time, but I think it’s about time guys like you step aside and guys like me step up, and that’s what I’m gonna do next week when I pin you 1…2…3 because I am R…V…D!” Bret was furious at the idea that he’s past his prime, telling Van Dam that he is everything wrong with wrestling nowadays, a punk kid who doesn’t respect the people who made it possible for him to be in this ring with a man like him. Bret said that next week he’ll teach Van Dam a lesson in respect and remind everybody why he has been the man to carry this company for so many years. Despite his words Bret knows he’ll have his hands full next week against the hungry Rob Van Dam. Could an upset be on the cards in the first round of the tournament?</p><p> </p><p> <strong>RATING: A* (100)</strong></p><p> </p><p> <img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> 5. Fresh off humiliating the McMahon’s on RAW, Goldust picked up an easy victory over Reno Riggins with the Final Cut. <strong>(C+ / 70)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - A hype video played for one of SmackDown’s 'hottest' new talents, Val Venis. Venis, lying in a large bed while watching his own ‘activities’ on a TV, said that he’s dominated the world of ‘adult entertainment’ and now he’s coming to do the same to World Wrestling Federation. Val Venis debuts soon on SmackDown! <strong>(E+ / 35)</strong></p><p> </p><p> - Backstage an irate Chris Benoit was furious over being eliminated in the first round of the Global Championship tournament. He ran into Rick Steiner, who told Benoit he needed to calm down. “Take it from a former multi-time tag team champion, sometimes you gotta pick yourself up and dust yourself off.” Benoit simply pushed Steiner out of his way and walked off, clearly not interested in his advice. <strong>(B- / 73)</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong>THE MAIN EVENT!</strong></p><p> <img alt="tsuMEav.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/tsuMEav.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><strong>VS</strong> <img alt="7ERqOdP.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/7ERqOdP.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <strong>WWF GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND</strong></p><p><strong> TRIPLE H vs. ADAM CLARKE</strong></p><p> </p><p> Despite having opportunities in the past Adam Clarke has never quite managed to capture gold here in the World Wrestling Federation, and went into this tournament hoping that maybe he’d finally manage it by becoming the first ever WWF Global Champion. His opponent was someone he has a bit of history with, Clarke and Triple H have battled it out three times before with Clarke holding a 2-1 advance in their series, but in their last outing at the Royal Rumble Triple H retained the Intercontinental Championship at his expense. Both men went all out in this one but it was the strength of Clarke that looked to prove the difference maker. At least it would have if Chyna hadn’t created a distraction for Billy Gunn to nail Clarke from behind with a low blow. Triple H followed up with the Pedigree and just like that Clarke’s dreams of becoming a champion vanished once again.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> TRIPLE H</p><p> <strong>RATING:</strong> B+ (85)</p><p> </p><p> The match may be over, but things were only going to get worse for Adam Clarke as Chyna and the New Age Outlaws dragged him to his feet and threw him to Triple H, who drove him to the mat with a second Pedigree. The group looked to continue the beating when…</p><p> </p><p> Randy Savage charged towards the ring in an attempt to make the save! Savage however was instantly outnumbered as Triple H, the New Age Outlaws and Chyna all pounced, not even the Macho Man able to hold his own against such odds. Savage was driven into the canvas with a Pedigree as the group stood tall over him and Clarke. Chyna grabbed a microphone for Triple H who delivered a message to the entirety of SmackDown. “The Kliq might be dead… but D-Generation X is here to stay, and if you’re not down with that then I’ve got two words for you… suck it!” Triple H, the New Age Outlaws & Chyna have laid down their version of the law to SmackDown, and is there anybody out there who’ll be able to stop them?</p><p> </p><p> <strong>RATING:</strong> B (82)</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="wqgw26H.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/wqgw26H.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> <strong>SHOW RATING:</strong> B+ (87)</p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote>

While I knew the first week would be a little more predictable than I intend the rest of the diary to be, purely due to setting certain things up, there were no perfect scores, and there were definitely two matches (RAW’s ten man tag and Benoit vs. Jericho) that seemed to trip a lot of people up.

I’ll be continuing Uncrewed’s trend of running a prediction contest for each in game month, so this contest will run for the entirety of April including RAW’s first single brand pay-per-view, Capital Carnage. April’s contest is a pretty big one as it will directly affect the first joint-branded pay-per-view, and the first of the “big five”, King of the Ring. With the brand split in affect the 1997 King of the Ring will be a 32 man tournament, 16 from both brand, and thus the top four placed predictors in the April contest will have a direct say in that tournament.

Essentially 8 competitors from RAW and 8 from SmackDown will be pre-selected by myself for the King of the Ring tournament. The remaining 16, 8 from each brand, will be selected by yourselves, but that won’t be where your involvement ends. The four prizes up for grabs in this contest are:

- Select 8 RAW superstars to be involved in the King of the Ring tournament.

- Select 8 RAW superstars to be involved in the King of the Ring tournament.

- Decide the entire first round bracket for the RAW side of the tournament (with the following rounds following this bracket structure so the winner of match 1 will face the winner of match 2 and so on).

- Decide the entire first round bracket for the SmackDown side of the tournament.

Whoever finishes first will get to select which of these four prizes they want, with second place choosing from the remainder, third from the two left and four place getting the final prize.

It’s probably the biggest, most complicated prediction prize I could possibly come up with for the start of this game, but if there’s one thing that’ll define this diary it’s going to be it’s unpredictability, and I feel letting you guys have a direct hand in things like this keeps it unpredictable. I’ve got a lot of interesting prediction contest prizes in store for you all so hopefully you’ll stay on board and get involved, because I think it’ll add an interesting twist on things that I won’t be able to do without you.

</p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Despite what Paul always says, my issue with him becoming the head booker of SmackDown wasn’t jealousy. Did I think I should have done it? Maybe, I’d spent the past three years proving that I could steer the World Wrestling Federation in the right direction, building new stars, reinvigorating old ones. A lot of people will tell you I saved the WWF from the threat of WCW. I’d tell them to look at the bigger picture, to give some credit to the guys who stepped up and made themselves into stars during those three years. If I hadn’t had that level of talent to work with, if they hadn’t been as hungry as they were, it might have been a different story.</div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Paul… well, he’d spent that time running ECW, and look where that ended up. So if you want the honest truth, my issue with him running SmackDown was the fear of what he’d do to it, that it’d end up the same way as Extreme Championship Wrestling. This brand split was risky enough without adding someone as unpredictable and unreliable as that. Of course I trusted Vince enough to know that the moment it looked like Paul was going to fail he’d cut him loose before he could drag SmackDown down with it. Hopefully all that talent he had on the blue side of the roster wouldn’t flounder with him.</div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Course, I couldn’t focus on that yet. I had something else to focus on. Vince wanted this to be a true competition, RAW vs. SmackDown, let the best brand win. And I was up for that. I’d beaten WCW, now I was going to beat SmackDown too. And I had just the roster to do it.</div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

HBK taking on the nWo (for lack of a more proper title for them at the moment) should be a great way to spend the next few months while DX does their thing on the blue side. Also, like Uncrewed, I'm excited to see Val Venis! He was always a favorite of mine during the Attitude Era and beyond.</p>
