Monsoon welcomed the audience, hot off the heels of a history making WrestleMania event. Gorilla turned his attention to his unusually quiet broadcast partner, and asked The Brain how we was holding up. The first thing Bobby said was “worst officiating I’ve ever seen in my life. That referee had the fix in for Andre--it should’ve been the greatest night in my life…”</p><p> </p><p> Monsoon complimented the officiating, noting he thought the referee kept his composure for such a big match and lightly teased Heenan about all the unopened bottles of champagne he had purchased. The Brain miserably told Monsoon that he could have them…</p><p> </p><p> Gorilla then put over tonight’s main event from the Joe Louis Arena: two highly touted veterans as King Harley Race takes on “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino, making a rare return to the squared circle. </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 93</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45510" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Tim Horner vs. Dino Bravo w/Johnny V.</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> “Canadian Strongman” Dino Bravo was in action against the proficient youngster Tim Horner next. Heenan simply replied “we’ll see about that…"</p><p> </p><p> Taking an extra dig, Monsoon revealed that he had it on good authority that Bobby Heenan would be on the hook for the cost of the new WWF World Championship belt. The announce team really made a big deal over the fact that Sammartino very rarely steps between the ropes nowadays, and this was quite a special attraction matchup. </p><p> </p><p> The two veterans (and future hall-of-famers) clashed for almost twenty minutes. Sammartino used his superior strength to overpower Race but the self-proclaimed “King of Pro Wrestling” demonstrated his toughness, resiliency, and willingness to bend the rules to his advantage. As the bout raged on, tempers began to flare as Bruno’s frustration with Race’s underhanded tactics mounting. Ventura was quick to point out that both men took a loss at WrestleMania and he’d argue it was a bigger match for Beefcake because it was his job to prove that he was better off without Johnny V. </p><p> </p><p> With all that analysis out of the way, the two men in the ring wrestled a match that overly played to the crowd, with Honky employing some classic Memphis stuff, refusing to tie up and taking frequent breaks to the floor and riling up the crowd. <p>Just wanted to post a couple of quick things:</p><p> </p><p>

--A lot of angles ran in succession on that past Prime Time. In hindsight, I think I crammed too much on that show. That said, it might be a good thing as I try to get more traction heading into my next big event following WrestleMania. All things considered though, Poffo's turn, Adonis' attack Beefcake and Bruno confronting Heenan was too much in a row I think.</p><p> </p><p>

--Coincidentally, the biggest news coming out of this past episode of Prime Time was Ron Bass (who I consider a decent worker and seemed like a great opponent for Hogan for a television bout) gave Hogan a back injury. (This may help explain why the Hulk only put a 67 rated match out). The whole roster immediately turned on Bass (everyone knows that Hogan's the golden goose). I had no choice but to send "The Outlaw" packing... Hogan will be nursing "chronic lower back pain" for over 2 months going forward. I'll be limiting his in-ring activities for that time for sure. Good luck to Ron Bass in his future endeavors.</p><p> </p><p>

--The timing of Hogan's injury was probably pretty good however, seeing that I don't think I'll have a big PPV event until June. I think I'll take April off from running big shows, schedule a SNME for May, run KotR for June, and another SNME heading into SummerSlam.</p><p> </p><p>

--Expect some new talent soon. I've been hyping Bam Bam Bigelow, but there's been a few other signings as well. I have been filtering in the prediction prizes and I have some exciting ideas plans for some of those workers.</p><p> </p><p>

--Last note of interest is work is picking up big time so my TEW time has scaled down drastically. I refuse to let this project die however, but there may be some time between posts going forward. I'm still having a lot of fun with this save and the write up don't feel like a chore--but time is everything. </p><p> </p><p>

--I think that's all the news for now. Thanks again to everyone who supported me last month in the Diary of the Months Awards. There was a lot of great diaries that I was up against, and I feel like the boards have been a bit more active than say this time a year ago. It's good to see so many talented writers going to work on here. I'll try to have Superstars/Challenge cards up when I get a chance.</p>

British Bulldogs - I don't really feel either of these teams are in title contention right now, but there's more you can do with the Bulldogs as opposed to the aging Orton and Muraco, so sap some of their overness.

Bundy and Race - The Heenan Family are still a huge threat, whereas the Stallions are at the perfect JTTS level of picking up small wins over local talent but losing in the big matches (like this one).

Butch Reed - Future IC champion?

Bob Backlund

Ricky Steamboat

Hart Foundation

Dan Spivey

Jim Duggan

New Dream Team - They need a big win to establish themselves as Johnny's new big team - especially now that it appears he's losing Demolition. To Mr. Fuji perhaps?

WWF Superstars of Wrestling

Wednesday, Week 2

The Week's Matches From: The Baltimore Civic Center

10,000 in attendance (Sell Out)

Announcers: Vince McMahon, Bruno Sammartino, & Jesse “the Body” Ventura

<iframe width="270" height="165" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EPPdIpgdeZk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The British Bulldogs vs. “Cowboy” Bob Orton & “Magnificent” Muraco w/ Danny Davis

Hot and heavy tag team action started this edition of Superstars of Wrestling with the announce team noting that the winners of this match would certainly be looking for a future matchup with the Tag Team Champions (currently held by The Hart Foundation). With Danny Davis and Matilda occupying opposite corners on the outside of the ring, the matchup inside was pretty even, with neither team holding a clear advantage. As Davis attempted to get involved to stem the tide in Orton & Muraco’s favor, Tito Santana made his way ringside from the back. Clearly Santana had some unfinished business from WrestleMania and looked to prevent any of Davis’ shenanigans. As Santana and Davis got into it ringside, Don Muraco’s attention was divided allowing the Dynamite Kid to take advantage and The Bulldog victory.

Interview

"Mean" Gene Okerlund was backstage with Tom Zenk and Rick Martel of the Can-Am Connection next. Gene reminded the viewers at home about Zenk and Martel’s scrap with the big duo of Kamala and Sika last week. Martel told Gene that “the bigger they come, the harder they fall and the Can-Am Connection (was) ready to settle the score!”

Grade: 69

The Young Stallions vs. “King” Harley Race & King Kong Bundy w/ Bobby Heenan

Despite some flutters of offense from the Stallions, Heenan’s men had the match in hand easily. The real story of note was Heenan and Sammartino exchanging words as McMahon kept the peace, encouraging Bruno to stay at the commentary table and not get riled up over the actions of The Weasel.

The Snake Pit

Hype

Bam Bam Bigelow was teased to make his debut next week on Prime Time Wrestling. The announce team noted that a number of managers in the WWF have already expressed an interest on getting their hands on this new talent...

Grade: 77

Hillbilly Jim vs. “The Natural” Butch Reed w/ Slick

The Mudlick, Kentucky native had a tough task ahead of him locking up with Butch Reed (and the ever present Slickster ringside). The big Appalachian mountain man got the early advantage on Reed, who begged out of tying up with Jim. Eventually the two locked up in a Greco-Roman knuckle lock, each trying to best the other in a show of strength. Sensing Jim coming out ahead, “the Natural” delivered a swift kick to the midsection ending the spot. Reed proceeded to fight dirty against Hillbilly, gouging the eyes and stretching the 5-count on a chokehold.

Reed began to strut around the ring mocking Hillbilly Jim. On commentary, Bruno noted that Reed should be going for the cover. In the back, Koko B. Ware (a man with his own issues with Butch Reed) stormed out having seen enough. The Birdman attacked Reed resulting in the disqualification.

Grade: 74

Post Match

Koko peppered Reed with quick jabs before knocking him over and out of the ring with a textbook dropkick! Slick hurried over to his charge and escorted an irate Reed to the back as Koko helped Hillbilly back to his feet.

Interview

“Mean” Gene was standing by with Adrian Adonis up next. The freshly shorn New Yorker had certain words for Brutus Beefcake. Adonis claimed that Beefcake had no right to barge into his business with Roddy Piper at WrestleMania and now was set on disfiguring Beefcake for not minding his own business. To that end, Adonis wanted Beefcake in a steel cage match next week on Prime Time Wrestling and when it was all said and done, Beefcake would be 10x's uglier than Adonis was!

Grade: 86

Bob Backlund vs. Ricky Santana

Making his first appearance in the ring since his return at WrestleMania, Bob Backlund showed he hasn’t lost a step at all, easily dispatching young Ricky Santana with a Cross Face Chicken Wing. Backlund’s first step on the comeback trail was a success and the announce team figured he’d get his opportunity to face The Iron Sheik before long.

Grade: 74

Promo

“Macho Man” Randy Savage had a few comments for Ricky Steamboat prior to “the Dragon’s” first title defense up next. Savage referred to WrestleMania as “the worst officiating he’s ever seen” and called Steamboat’s win a fluke, all owing to the involvement of “that bozo, George Steele, yeah!” Savage ended the promo by saying he wanted “to do the thing again, yeah! And regain what was rightfully (his), the Intercontinental Championship!”

Grade: 85

Intercontinental Title: Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat © vs. Nikolai Volkoff w/ Slick & The Iron Sheik

Pre-Match

It was time for the main event of the program and, as you would expect from any Nikolai Volkoff match, Nikolai started by singing the Russian national anthem as the fans in attendance booed. As Nikolai finished, a cocky Slick took the microphone and went on to put over Nikolai as the next Intercontinental Champion before handing the microphone off to The Iron Sheik. In no uncertain terms, Sheik made it clear that “Iran is number 1 and USA >spit!<” Sheik would go on to say that he would once again “break Backlund’s back in the Camel Clutch” once again!

Grade: 69

Shortly after, Steamboat made his entrance to a chorus of cheers and the action got underway. Despite the occasional interference from both Slick and The Iron Sheik on the floor, “the Dragon” proved to be a fighting a champion in his first title defense as he overcame a barrage of heavy offense from the powerful Croatian. Steamboat put on a valiant display that saw him take out Sheik and and Slick by diving off the top to the floor with a crossbody block before finishing Volkoff off with with a Flying Karate Chop.

Bobby simply responded by pointing to his head and simply said “The Brain.” as if that settled the discussion.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 85</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45510" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Steel Cage Match: </strong></p><p><strong> Brutus Beefcake vs. Adrian Adonis</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> With that, it was main event time as we came back to the arena where the classic, blue bar cage had been erected around the ring. Adonis entered first, no longer seconded by Jimmy Hart and having severly toned to down the more flamboyant elements of his character. Beefcake, now sporting outrageous tights with holes and brandishing hedge trimmers, came out next. Brutus was all smiles as he looked to enter the foreboding structure. </p><p> </p><p> Adonis pounced on Beefcake immediately as he entered the cage, not even affording him a moment to remove his ring jacket. Adonis hammered Beefcake with clubbing forearm shots. Adonis grabbed Beefcake by a handful hair and attempted to bash Beefcake’s head into the unforgiving steel. Beefcake countered by putting his foot up to stop the impact before throwing an elbow to Adonis’ beefy midsection. Beefcake took control by sending Adonis for a ride with an atomic drop and continued to dish out the offense, tossing Adonis into the steel cage on all four sides of the ring to the crowd’s delight. By the end of the sequence, Adonis had a bit of blood trickling down his face as Beefcake displayed a maniacal smile.</p><p> </p><p> The tides turned a bit when Adonis went to Beefcake’s eye (a move that Ventura was quick to point out was totally legal in a steel cage match). From there, Adonis went of the offense as it was Beefcake’s turn to taste the steel. With Beefcake down and selling on the mat, Adonis taunted the fans, pointing to the beleaguered Beefcake. The delay was enough for Brutus to find his second wind however! Brutus battled back and eventually cinched in a tight sleeper hold in the middle of the ring! With nowhere for Adonis to go, Adonis collapsed to the mat, dropping his hand 3 times before Joey Marella declared Beefcake the winner! </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 81</strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Post match:</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> As a tired and worn out Beefcake began to celebrate his hard-fought victory, Greg Valentine and Dino Bravo, led by Johnny V., hit the ring. The New Dream Team quickly disposed of the referee and as Johnny V. held the cage door shut, Valentine and Bravo laid into their former partner. Beefcake convulsed on the mat as beating reigned down, blood now freely pouring from his forehead. Beefcake was battered, having been tossed into the cage multiple times and totally laid to waste by Valentine and Bravo. The program went off the air as the New Dream Team celebrated in the cage as the fans hurtled garbage towards the cage.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: 73</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Show Rating: 80</strong></p></div><p></p>
